Other topics Ford explores in his interview include his return to fashion and the why of it: ”Because I’m not Doing The Fashion System. I don’t do shows. I don’t have reviews. Speaking of Gucci, Ford compares his time at the Italian luxury house to the work he does now: “At Gucci, it was all about creating The Look each season The Shoe, The Bag, The Hair. But now I have no desire to create The Look. I just want to make beautiful, glamorous clothes.” Pity he won’t wear them, though.”

But before sending a look down the intimate, exclusive runway, Ford always has his PR lady Whitney or Carine Roitfeld when she’s not pussyfooting with Karl Lagerfeld, try it on: ”If they don’t wear it, it doesn’t go into production.”

As for that infamous French Vogue he guest edited for Roitfeld, Ford explains his reasoning behind all the geriatric grinding: ”My mother doesn’t like me saying this but she’s in her late seventies and her boyfriend’s in his late sixties. The point is she’s active and looks amazing, and yet we’ve taught ourselves to think that ageing’s embarrassing. That’s why I left all the wrinkles in the story shot for French Vogue of an old couple having sex”.

And then there’s Ford’s burgeoning film career after 2009′s wonderful A Single Man. While his next film, allegedly a comedy, is “ready to go,” the life of a filmmaker has its difficulties: ”I would lose my mind if I just did films…I enjoy the speed of fashion. I love doing different things and I think I still have something valid to say in fashion.” I fully support that — I always find whatever Tom Ford says to be valid, no matter how batshit it is. The doc follows Ford through his first womenswear show in six years, his guest editorship at Vogue Paris during the last halcyon days of Carine Roitfeld‘s tenure and the opening of his flagship store in Beverly Hills — in other words, you don’t want to miss this shit.

Ford admits that he’s “never let anyone film [him] like this before,” claiming that “[t]here’s a very squiggly line between Tom Ford the man and Tom Ford the brand.” That line was further squigglied with his feature film debut A Single Man, which he refers to as his “midlife crisis on screen.”

If only all mid-life crises resulted in Oscar nominations as opposed to bad hair plugs, expensive sports cars and cheap hookers.

What was your worst modeling experience?
My first fashion week in Milan, at age 18. I was like, “What am I doing here?” I was feeling so alone. It was freezing cold and I didn’t bring the right clothes. And I couldn’t communicate because my English was even worse than it is now. Instead of saying, “She is blond,” I would say, “She is yellow hair!”

What’s the last book you read?
I just finished Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. It was very special. I’m in a difficult moment in my personal life now. Heart things. I don’t mean medical heart problems—I mean relationships. Love things! So the book taught me about accepting life how it comes. Sometimes you are fighting for things you can’t fight for.

Didn’t you just work as an actor for the first time?
Yes. I can’t give details about the movie yet, but it was an unbelievable experience. I felt more secure in front of the camera than in real life. In my normal life I have so many insecurities. I am learning from them, or trying to learn.

[All right, just kill me. And the movie obvi turned out to be A Single Man.]

How much time do you spend at the gym?
Almost none. I really hate the gym. So I go running. When I lift weights I feel like I am hurting myself. I would rather do other things. Swimming sometimes. Why should I be two hours in a gym, suffering so much, with all these people that I don’t know and don’t want to know?

Have you ever fallen down on the runway?
Yes! It happened during, like, my second show! But I was lucky because it was on a stairway that was mostly hidden, so the audience couldn’t see anything.

Who hits on you most often—women or men?
I don’t get hit on a lot. Really. I do see people looking at me but normally it’s me who takes the first step. (laughs) I’m the one who walks over to see what’s going on.

[You know, people stare at me too. But usually I think it's for all the wrong reasons.]

Ford wrote and directed 2009’s “A Single Man” which starred Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult — who not so coincidentally stars in those terrifying ads we were talking about — and Colin Firth, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the central character.

Ford let the big news slip at the unveiling of Diane von Furstenberg’s suites at Claridge’s — the same party where Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow palled it up for the cameras — though he kept mum on any of the details. “I’m not telling you anything about it,” he told the Standard.

Nicholas has also been nominated for a BAFTA Rising Star Award, the award for an actor or actress set for great things.

Tom Ford gave Jon Kortajarena (the hottest man alive and the star of many Tom Ford ads) a role in A Single Man, and he doesn’t disappoint on the big screen.

Tom Ford talks about his directorial debut, A Single Man: “George, who is very much my own character grafted onto the character, obsessively puts himself together because that is the way he holds himself together. His inner world and his outer world are connected, and the only thing holding them together is the polishing of his shoes, the scrubbing of his fingernails, the perfect white shirt. If he let go of that, he would collapse. There is an enormous part of myself that is like that.”

Tom Ford attempts to direct with a new film about a man who’s coming to terms with his partners death. No one speaks through the preview, so I’m guessing it’s supossed to be artsy, or possibly for deaf fashionistas.
