New York Fashion Week: Accessory Rundown

Abaete

Williamson /

Sarafpour /

I have been keeping tabs on all the runway shows this week. I must say that some are phenomenal, and others, not so special. But the used on the Spring 2009 runways have exceeded all expectations. Now I have something to look forward to during the horrendous winter.

Marc by Marc Jabobs showed an amazing belt. Or was it a fanny pack? Well, this fanny-belt is as functional as it is fashionable. It’s a different approach on the overdone, neon, kindergarten fanny. Halston showed a great, double wrap belt in a gorgeous tanned leather. It looks ordinary, but the way it matches the bag really works. Could cutting matching from the same hide be a new trend for spring?

Halston had great bags. From leather to bright, crazy prints, they have something for everyone to tote through the city streets. Derek Lam showed notable bags as well…I’m a sucker for the white ones with really good hardware. Monique Lhuillier showed a vibrant coral necklace with a subdued evening gown. The contrast gave her collection a classic, but edgy look.

The - Oh the !! These were the best I’ve seen in awhile. MaxAzria showed his collection of flowing dresses with sandals that tightly wrapped around the ankle. Hanii Y’s pointed, lace-up flats in white, black and metallic silver were my favorites. They tied the collection together extremely well, along with pastel scarves. The models wore on Abaeté’s runway that brought out the bad girl in her collection. Matthew Williamson showed amazing multi-colored platforms. They complemented his collection well, along with smokey eyes and stick-straight .

and was anywhere from whimsical to old Hollywood to completely crazy. I love a good wig, so made my day with candy-colored bobs topped with fantastic bowlers. Isaac Mizrahi glammed-up his collection by taking a classic hairdo and making it modern. Behnaz Sarafpour summoned my inner fairy with ethereal metallic and heads covered with garden flowers.

This spring will be about making a statement on top of a statement. Or are these fab enough to stand on their own? Basically, I think anything will go for spring ‘09; my feet couldn’t be more ecstatic!

Extras Extras: When Can We Read All About It?

Until they gain stable enough footing to expand their lines into collections, or they start out focusing on extras, smaller apparel designers aren’t known for the side dishes, like and handbags. The major fashion houses seem to maintain that monopoly: routinely become iconic, Fendi and churn out “it” bags like soft serve; and earlier this year Kaiser Karl brought us an entire carousel of giant Chanel .

So far this season we’ve seen unremarkable in the Elie Tahari show, and ’s models sported some hot peeptoe pumps (above). And… thats it. And while we’re only a day in and still awaiting snaps of many of the shows, the front seems pretty barren.

While a lot of designer pieces and overall looks can be easily replicated without paying thousands of dollars, tend to spark fashion revolutions and hysterics. Those little extras are what create the buzz, the wait lists, new fans and backlash. They’re the protein of the runways! Over the next week I expect a buffet of life-altering trends. If the only extras for spring are the goody bags at the tents, we’ll have to settle for last season’s leftovers.

Oh, How Much is That 11 Dollar Bill?

martin margiela line 11 billfold wallet - highsnobiety

Line 11 billfold wallet is just about the coolest thing I’ve spotted this week. Layered to look like a wad of cash, the 11 Billfold is made from leather and paper to keep it looking authentic. Of course at $375 bucks, it’s a bit more expensive than printing your own money. Find it at AR.

Lining Up at Henri Bendel’s

purpleSo twice a year NYC’s famous Henri Bendel’s holds a search for new indie designers looking for an in to the industry. Designers will start to line up outside starting at 2am in the morning. I was not going to get up that early, however I did get there at 7:30am and at that time was still 2 city blocks away from the entrance. While about a thousand people continued to add on with every hour or so.My time paid off thanks to the hands of the fashion gods and my brilliant reps at Bui-Lavry PR who helped me display and sell my treasured head pieces. Bendel’s is giving me a time slot to host my own Angel Lust trunk show near the end of April, which will coincide with the debut of my items on “Gossip Girl” !!!I’m going to write more about the event on my personal blog along with some very helpful tips for all future designers who want to stand in line.
