Q. What stores do you love outside of the U.S.?

A. I love Dover Street in London, Colette in Paris and 10 Corso Como in Milan.

Q. Who is the best designer for a travel wardrobe?

A. I have to say Lanvin – Alber’s clothes are comfortable, elegant and the fabrics travel extremely well.

Q. What is your favorite travel destination?

A. I don’t have a favorite destination, but I am always looking forward to the next trip.

Oh Claridge’s Christmas Tree, How Lanvin are Your Branches

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s officially time to start readying for the grand daddy of all annoying holidays, Christmas. Jingle bells will be jingling, silver bells will be silvering and sleigh bells will be sleighing — meanwhile, who knew there were so many bells associated with this show? — as you scour the racks for the best gift deals, pretend you care about people other than yourself and of course, ready the good ole Christmas tree. But whether you chop it down with your own two hands or take it to the trailer park with tinsel, chances are your tree won’t hold a candle to Claridge’s, this year designed by Lanvin‘s own little elf, Alber Elbaz.

Elbaz himself sits atop the tree, or rather an adorable facsimile. “The tree is to emanate and bring heartwarming joy to all who work and stay as guests at Claridge’s hotel,” the designer said. “It’s my way to wish them a very Merry Christmas.” This is Alber’s first time tackling tree trimming duty for the famous hotel — John Galliano handled it for the past two years, but perhaps an alleged anti-Semite designing their Christmas tree wasn’t the right message Claridge’s wanted to send.

Whereas your tree will most likely be up well into March, the Lanvin tree will only be on display in the Claridge’s lobby until January 2. [Vogue UK]

To celebrate the in-store launch of their new children’s wear line, Lanvin Petite, Alber Elbaz and co. are conducting an online cake recipe contest for fashionable moms and their equally-chic daughters.

The winner will be chosen by the executive chef of the Ritz Escoffier cooking school, which will then bake the cakes for a luxury tea party at the Place Vendôme hotel on December 4. To avoid too much riff-raff, all dolls and teddybears are required to RSVP in advance.

Lanvin Petite is already available online but will hit Lanvin stores next week, followed by a roll-out to select boutiques in mid-December. [WWD]

Dior-Marc Jacobs Talks Falling Through

At the glacial pace Bernard Arnault and co. are moving to replace John Galliano at Christian Dior, the ousted designer will have time to finish rehab, mount a comeback, and muck it all up again in another drunken, anti-Semitic tirade. The luxury brand has been in talks with Marc Jacobs for months, which have been less than smooth, but now it seems that Jacobs and Dior might be calling it quits.

The caveat that broke the camel’s back was Jacobs’ insistence on taking his Louis Vuitton team with him to Dior, leaving Vuitton — LVMH’s cash cow — without a heel to stand on. To make matters worse, Arnault had wanted Céline‘s Phoebe Philo to replace Marc at Vuitton should he move to Dior, but Philo is happy where she is — outfitting Kanye West in billowy blouses.

So with Jacobs more or less off the table, LVMH has reportedly approached Alexander Wang, Jason Wu and Jil Sander‘s Raf Simons; though out of the three Simons would seem the most likely choice, that is unless Dior plans on eschewing breathtaking gowns and impeccably-crafted ladysuits for sweatpants and cocktail dresses.

Then there is Givenchy‘s Riccardo Tisci, whose name has been bandied about since Gallianogate got into full swing. But he — along with Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz, Alexander McQueen‘s Sarah Burton and Balenciaga‘s Nicolas Ghesquière – has turned down the Dior deal, citing brand loyalty.

So the question still remains — and frankly, the question is getting really tiresome — who will take the reins at Christian Dior? However, by the time someone is announced, the question might be, who the hell cares? [WWD]

Deer Dana was founded in 2008 by by designers Dana Veraldi and Kevin Tekinel. Their signature collection of tees and totes feature the images of icons both mainstream and underground. the label has collaborated with prestigious name susch as: Adidas, Tory Burch, Gap, and most recently Olivier Theyskens for Theory‘s Fashion’s Night Out.

- The New York Dermatology Group is offering half-off on Botox injections during Fashion’s Night Out. Well I know where I’ll be with a half-smile frozen on my otherwise immobile face. [Fashionista]

- Over 50 shows are live-streaming during this Fashion Week. A lot to keep track of, but luckily someone already did that while you were hating your life during the course of the workday. [The Cut]

- Last Fashion Week’s economic impact on Lincoln Center was roughly about $20,902,193, with an estimated $233 million impact per season citywide. And that’s not even counting drug money. [NYT]

- Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz continues to be the most adorable thing this side of…well, these Lanvin dolls. In a talk he gave over this weekend, Alber explained why he just says no: “I don’t take drugs because if I did I’d love them – I’d be a junkie. The Lanvin Fall Campaign Video Is More Fun Than You Thought

By now the whole fashion world has seen the amazing Lanvin A/W 2011 ads featuring what it looked like models dancing in sync. The full video has come out and is definitely one of the more innovative and fun campaigns we’ve seen in a while.

Models Raquel Zimmermann, Karen Elson, Lowell Tautchin, & Milo Spijkers dance in pairs to the Pitbull number, I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho.) The models have pretty smooth moves and the video even boasts a cameo by Alber Elbaz, creative director of Lanvin.

Marc Jacobs in Talks to Take Over Dior

The saga at Christian Dior continues as WWD reports that Marc Jacobs is in talks with Bernard Arnault and co. to take over the recently tumultuous couture house.

Dior has been without a creative director since that little incident with John Galliano — you know, the anti-Semitism and the firing and the rehab and the court case — since March.

Arnault, chairman of LVMH — which also owns Marc Jacobs International — had initially planned on hiring Jacobs for Dior back in the 90s, but that idea was vetoed by Dior’s then president Francois Baufume. Instead, Galliano was hired from Givenchy to Dior and Jacobs signed on as Vuitton’s artistic director in 1997.

“Had I hired Marc Jacobs for Dior and John Galliano for Louis Vuitton, it would not have worked as well for both brands, even though both designers are geniuses of their own,” Arnault told WWD in 2003.

Meetings are scheduled for this week in Paris between Dior and Marc Jacobs’ legal representatives while the designer prepares for New York Fashion Week. Robert Duffy, Jacobs’ longtime business partner, is also reported to be integral to the deal, despite currently having legal troubles of his own.

Should Jacobs move to Dior, Phoebe Philo is said to be on tap to replace him at Louis Vuitton, while maintaining her current role at Céline.

Since March, Dior has approached a number of designers to replace Galliano including Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz, Balenciaga‘s Nicolas Ghesquière, Alexander McQueen‘s Sarah Burton, Haider Ackermann and Hedi Slimane. Elbaz, Ghesquière and Burton have allegedly withdrawn themselves from the running due to their strong personal commitments to their respective brands, while talks with Ackermann and Slimane proved fruitless.

Then, of course, there is Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci whose name has been bandied about as frontrunner for months now and who is a favorite of Delphine Arnault, deputy managing director at Dior. Where Tisci stands in all this is uncertain, but do you think Marc Jacobs is what Christian Dior needs right now? [WWD]

The Only French Toast Anna Wintour Condones

French president Nicholas Sarkozy presented Vogue‘s editrix in chief Anna Wintour with the Legion of Honor award of merit last night at Paris’ Élysée Palace. After receiving the prize, she mindlessly threw it amongst her other awards, the Order of the British Empire and the head of Carine Roitfeld.

On hand to toast Wintour — who never met a Chanel bouclé tweed she didn’t drape over her frail back — were Karl Lagerfeld, Donatella Versace with bff Riccardo Tisci — fresh off his glorious fall 2011 haute couture collection for Givenchy – Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz, Anna’s Italian counterpart Franca Sozzani, Mario Testino, LVMH head honcho Bernard Arnault, YSL‘s Stefano Pilati, Burberry‘s Christopher Bailey, Tommy Hilfiger, professional dandy and Vogue‘s editor-at-large Hamish Bowles and the Rhoda to Anna’s Mary, Grace Coddington.

According to the Kaiser, “We had this very nice cocktail, where Anna made a very funny speech.” I have a hard time believing at least one of those facts. [WWD]

Versace for H&M Is Happening: Now with Video!

Following in the high-low footsteps of Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson, Sonia Rykiel and most recently Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz, Donatella will design a collection of both mens and womens clothing, in addition to home items — which I never even knew H&M had to begin with.

Described as a celebration of the Italian brand’s “vibrant heritage,” the collection will debut in 300 H&M stores on November 17th — and will be sold out later that day.

Bonus! Donatella — pulled, tucked and shellacked within inches of her life — discusses the collection with H&M’s Creative Advisor, Margareta van den Bosch.

Uniqlo Tees Off with Gaga, Uncle Karl and Nikki Kids

10 celebrities from the worlds of music, fashion and film showcased their design talents to create 10 T-shirts for Uniqlo and Condé Nast Japan. The special T’s go on sale June 25th for $19.90 with proceeds going to benefit the Japanese Red Cross.

Lady Gaga, Karl Lagerfeld, Nicole Kidman, Alber Elbaz, Charlize Theron, Orlando Bloom, Blake Lively, Cyndi Lauper, Victoria Beckham and Gwyneth Paltrow lend their considerable star power to the project which is expected to donate about $1.2 million to relief efforts. [WWD]

Been Wondering How to Rock the Mandal?

Teva-like structures befuddlingly tromped the men’s Spring 2011 runways. Which left us scratching our heads. If you’ve been wondering how and when is the appropriate time to wear a Teva, we have your answer.

NEVER!

We mean it.

Unless you’re going to a beach and you have to hike through terrain to get there. Or you’re eleven and going to a water park. Or you’re my father at the swim club. Really, there’s little excuse.

This conclusion was reached when I delved into what designers Alber Elbaz for Lanvin and Richard Chai supposed looked decent with this atrocity. Socks and a suit? Just try getting past a bouncer in those. They also show a cargo short…. have to disagree.

One day, we’ll find a shoe that does all of the things we want a Teva to do – ie: hold the foot sturdy with as few straps as possible with arch support and a grippy sole. But these are not the way. This isn’t it.

No need to revisit this part of the nineties.

Alber Gets in Touch with Lanvin’s Inner Child

Alber Elbaz is launching his first kids collection under Lanvin, for girls age 4-10, alongside the brand’s resort collection in June.

The 25 piece luxury line will include T-shirts, coats, sweaters and accessories made from fabrics that cost as much as 10 times as those normally used for kiddy kouture. Though I don’t much care for children (years of riding the subway with them has seen to that), I’ve always thought the best, and really the only reason to have them is the opportunity to play dress up. Hopefully the next kid collection will include tranny training heels. [WWD]

- “Raunchy spam” has been plaguing the Facebook pages of Nike, Levi’s, Victoria’s Secret and Aeropostale. The spam included links to sex sites such as xxxblackbook, ihookup and Adult FriendFinder and quotes such as “I am a girl who has an innocent face but has a big appetite for s-e-x.” Dammit, that was supposed to say “has a big appetite for c-o…” — anyway, the point is, whoever is doing this is sick. Sick and fun…just like the sexy singles on Adult FriendFinder. That’s Adult FriendFinder: putting the “end” back in Friend. [NY Post]

- Australian retailers are now charging shoppers as much as $50 to try on clothes in an effort to cut back on people buying discounted fashions online after perfecting the fit in-store. The fee is refundable, however, should patrons decide to buy the article of clothing. Personally, I never try on clothes, mostly because I’m lazy. If I get home and something is too big I’ll call it “oversized” and if it’s too small, I call it an “aspirational piece.” I also love finding reasons to not eat, which I call “going on a diet.” [Daily Mail]

- Riccardo Tisci is still the front-runner to replace John Galliano at Dior, but his name is being bandied about with the likes of Olivier Theyskens, Tom Ford, Hedi Slimane, Nicolas Ghesquière, Alber Elbaz, Sarah Burton, Haider Ackermann and Prabal Gurung. Tisci has reportedly already sketched out his vision for the brand and has a supporter in Delphine Arnault, Bernard’s daughter and Dior’s deputy managing director. However, Bernard Arnault‘s eyeing the Royal Wedding, hoping to align Dior with the young couple; so if Burton catches Kate Middleton‘s sartorial bouquet she could be next on the list. The atelier is nevertheless hard at work on their upcoming cruise collection and a couture collection for July. [WWD]

The Mandals Scandal: Return of the Teva

When it comes to sandals, I think they’re best worn at the beach or far away from public consumption. When it comes to flip-flops, I think they should just be thrown atop a burning trash heap since that’s the only good they’ll do anyone. But for some reason, fashion is embracing the Teva, the ugliest men’s footwear this side of a fluorescent Croc.

Sally Singer‘s T Magazine declares that this “multistrapped mid-’80s fashion disaster beloved by Deadheads in dreads, is having a moment.” There are at least 5 things wrong with that sentence so would it be possible to end this moment before it even starts?

Apparently Lanvin (left Alber, what were you thinking?), Bottega Veneta (center) and Richard Chai (right) all showed them on their spring runways. So with the coming warm weather also comes the threat of seeing people’s gross feet on the subway…

Why not just walk barefoot through a pile of hypodermic needles? It’s the same experience. So, gentlemen, before subjecting your feet and the world to Teva torture, perhaps consider a slip-on? An espadrille? A casual man-heel?

Lanvin Takes a Walk on the Wild Side for Pre-Fall 2011

There is no shortage of luxurious furs, embroidered tweeds and ladylike ruffles in the Lanvin Pre-Fall 2011 collection. Visionary designer and all-around genius Alber Elbaz turned to rich textures and Parisian silhouettes for the collection, focusing on opulent velvet and silk dresses, leather details and wild animal prints.

Kanye West: “Take Me to Alber”

After being crowned Stylemaker of the Year at the Accessories Council ACE awards on Monday (my nomination must have gotten lost in the mail), Kanye West bum-rushed Lanvin‘s bowtied artistic director, Alber Elbaz with whom he had a “deep conversation” about fashion. Below is a transcript* of said conversation.

Kanye: Yo, Albert.

Alber: Hey…Kanye.

Kanye: I want you to know that I’m a REAL big fan of Lanvin. I fucked like four girls backstage at your show last season.

Alber: I really must…

Kanye: And when I say backstage, I mean I was literally backstage. I got some of my love juice on a whole rack of dresses. You’re welcome.

Alber: I recall, I had to burn that entire collection.

Kanye: Yo, I’m saying though, I want to design for Lanvin. Maybe some kicks made entirely out of diamonds.

Alber: That might be a bit expen–

Kanye: Or a suit made, get this, entirely out of diamonds.

Alber: I’m not sure…

Kanye: Okay, okay, I’m a let you finish, but I just gotta say that I’m the greatest designer of ALL TIME. First it’s me, then it’s Coco Chanel, then it’s Martha Stewart Living, then it’s Marc Jacobs, then it’s Baby Phat.

Lanvin’s Heels Turn Models Into Drunks

Apparently for Lanvin’s Spring 2011 presentation, only a handful of wobbly girls could manage to keep the agony from showing in their faces, forcing Alber Elbaz to make a last-minute switch to flats on the runway.

That won’t stop Lanvin from selling the overpriced torture devices, of course, and the heels will be available for purchase this spring. Yay! Another pair of unworn shoes to sit at the back of our closet.

Taking place in a wacky hotel straight out of The Shining (but with a lot less crazy Jack Nicholson), this video has us dreaming of trench coats, puffy cocktail dresses, frilly skirts, and bright, floral accessories.

Bravo to Lanvin for adding a little more color to the runway. I think this is something we should praise and ask more of cause it’s rare and needs to become the norm. The Daily is reporting that Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz spent his birthday alone in New York City cleaning birthday cake off his floor at The Mercer Hotel cause he was too embarrassed to call the staff to help clean it up. Le sad…

“Once Elbaz arrived in New York, the Mercer Hotel staff surprised him with an en suite card and cake. ‘Except I was all alone and I didn’t want to be that person eating an entire cake by myself in a hotel room,’ the maestro confessed. ‘So I tried to hide it, and it fell on the floor. I was too ashamed to call downstairs and ask for help with the clean-up, so I got on my knees and did it by myself.’”

Alber Elbaz is, in my opinion, the “king” of “elegant chic.” His stunning designs are at once, feminine, sexy and classic. The Lanvin design aesthetic is not one based on trends, but a never wavering collection of swoon-worthy offerings which appeals to varied tastes. When I look at the pieces, I envision those days of a bygone era when one went on “holiday” to French Riviera or some other equally chic destination. I don’t expect that we will ever see edgy, studded pieces from Lanvin, which is fine…..make mine chic.

Lanvin Reveals Mini Porcelain Dolls

Alber Elbaz delighted and surprised us when he adorned the Lanvin Faubourg Saint-Honoré store window with miniature mannequins last year and then took it a step further to create six Miss Lanvin porcelain hand painted dolls with Taiwanese ceramics company Franz. It was a hark back to Jeanne Lanvin’s partaking in the post-war Theâtre de la Mode show which saw French couturiers showcasing their designs through miniature dolls, due to the lack of fabric. The second series of dolls from Lanvin have just been released and feature seven silhouettes from the S/S 08 Lanvin collection as well as the bridal capsule collection. Packaged in Lanvin’s signature pale blue boxe, again they will only be produced in a limited edition of 800.

Hitting the newsstands is September is Glamour magazine. Normally Glamour is always hitting the right notes; a fun read to divulge into the world of beauty, fashion, news, and tips (not before Fashionindie of course), but we can’t say we agree with one of their articles in the making. Glamour is set to release an article, in their September issue, featuring “Seven People Who Could Change Your Style”. The list is less than impressive. The seven “fashionistas” include Pat McGrath, Victoria Beckham, Christian Louboutin, Alber Elbaz, Takashi Murakami, Serge Normant, and Agyness Deyn. Though many of these men and women have made significant names for themselves, I think it’s a little overboard to say that these seven people would change anyones style. Don’t get me wrong, their individual and unique and they let their clothes speak for themselves, but to say they start the trend? It’s ridiculous!

Esquire Attempts To Squeeze Some Art Out Of Its Covers

Esquire Magazine, in a brazen attempt to still seem relevant in todays world of dotcom fashion, decided to celebrate their 75th Anniversary by recreating some of their “iconic” covers created by long time art director George Lois. Most of the photos are pretty poor attempts at recreation and most of the newer images are just too different from the originals. I can appreciate the Vivienne Westwood shot, which corresponds to an anti-war cover for the magazine that featured the 100th murdered Vietnam solider. Aside from that the connections seem strained.

The photos were on display in Milan. Some people came for the free drinks.
