Occupy Bowery Hotel with the Glamorous 99%

The 99% showed up to the Bowery Hotel on Jan. 31st and camped themselves on the second floor. But if this crowd wanted to occupy, they might’ve easily bought room nights for the masses. This part of the 99% encompassed models, editors, artists, well dressed experts-in-their-fields, The Balkan Beat Box, as well as a small handful of top occupiers. This was part of The Awareness Experiment. While Alexa Chung and Penn Badgley helped host the event by introducing key speakers; those speakers then transformed into discussion facilitators, where they asked these creative working minds to help solve issues like how to make Occupy.com a democratic yet refined space, or learn about consciousness and the environment. And so the night was spent in conversation with beautiful strangers about politics, teachers unions, environmental issues, media, consciousness, evolution, war and drugs. Lindsey Wixon and I ruminated the state of televised news. Sean Lennon spontaneously launched into a terrifying tirade on the realities of Wall Street. Each attendee was encouraged to wear a name tag with a skill/trade and a question, my question naturally was fashionably inclined. Fascinating answers ensued.

My question was: “What piece of clothing makes you feel best about the world?”

Penn Badgley: “The ethics of manufacturing – it’s a grey area that I know nothing about. So I’m gonna have to say my Calvin Klein underwear.” Nothing comes between them.

Alexa Chung: “My mum gave me some trainers. Sneakers.” #Mummysgirl

Paul Manza, Yogi: “Under-onesies. Why should you be restricted around the waist? It’s bad for digestion and internal organs. There are many ways to keep your pants up that don’t constrict the waist.” He is currently developing these under-onesies for production, I’ll keep you posted. For now, check out his yoga studio The Clearings.

Shanee Pink, Musician: “I always love the story about jeans, how Levi created them for workers but it became a fashion basic that everybody has. I like when fashion is not that distant. I like people on the street with all their layering. So jeans was a grass roots movement that happened. But I barely wear jeans. I like TOMS because they make you have a purpose with you fashion choice. It’s the future. Why this party is such a cool thing is because it has purpose.” Now, listen to her croon with her electric guitar and rad band.

Some other responses from the crowd included little bracelets from Costa Rica that cost nothing here and yet provide a livelihood for someone across the world. Another likes to buy things from people in the streets, because it’s a better gig than begging. Sweaters help one guy feel better about the world, while his friend makes the argument for shoes. He also alleges that scarves are the least useful things. I asked one of the night’s coordinators, Sarabeth, her item? “Scarves. Especially this chiffon one right here. They are versatile and can travel anywhere.” It was a night of confronting differences, and embracing them.

Lindsey Wixon and I did not address my question. She did, however, tell me her favorite news source: BBC. She likes that they actually send reporters on location to report back with real footage. It’s not local, petty, cats-and-celebrity news at BBC; it covers real world issues.

Sean Ono Lennon meanwhile, has been doing his due diligence to learn about the issues on Wall Street. He expounded the inner-workings of artificial inflation, and that the state of corporations in this country is equivalent to a plutarchy, among other unjust notions. In that time he recommended two books: Temple of the Center of Time by David Flynn and Currency Wars by Song Hongbing. More than just a little night reading.

One of the deepest messages of The Awareness Experiment seemed to be to talk, engage and share with one another. Ask questions. Get into deep conversations with new acquaintances, let ideas bounce around, and leave your mind open to change. When we’re all open to listening to one another, we will evolve and make change happen.

Lifetime’s New ’24 Hour Catwalk’ is Exactly What it Seems

Designers. Start your collections. Now. I’ll be back in exactly 24 hours, and it had better be good and done. That, my dear, is the premise of Lifetime‘s newest competitive fashion show, 24 Hour Catwalk, hosted by our dear Alexa Chung. In each episode, four designers will create a garment, and two will be eliminated. The two remaining designers will then each create a three-piece collection with the aid of professional and mouthy sewers. At the end of those 24 hours, they present to the judges: design star and collab-addict Cynthia Rowley, PR guru James LaForce (sans Stevens) and the Very Classy fashion editor Derek Blasberg. It premieres Januray 10, 2012. See the sneak preview here.

In a rare, and unstaged, show of emotion — public or otherwise — Victoria Beckham wiped away a tear as she collected her award for Designer Brand at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. Thanking her husband and 13 children, Beckham beat out industry vets Tom Ford, Burberry and Stella McCartney – who still managed to win the Red Carpet award – to snatch her first BFA trophy. Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton was awarded the Designer of the Year award while Christopher Kane beat out Erdem and Jonathan Saunders to take home the inaugural New Establishment prize, which recognizes “a particular movement in British fashion that is taking the industry by storm.” Gallery and list of the winners follows after the jump.

The modern power suit gets a lift at AvaMaria. Here stands a summer office outfit, turban and all. Store owner Katherine Virketiene is an expert on taking a look from evening out dancing to professional, and vice versa, because she was a professional ballroom dancer for so many years, and made costumes for Dancing with the Stars. Here is Boutique Critique’s most professional look yet.

The Skirt: Myth & Ritual, $178

My mind scarcely runs to any sort of “business wear”, but this skirt seemed more versatile than that. Though it would feel at home in the office, try it at a picnic.Peer at the careful detailing on the pockets and waistband. Blue velvet panels do more for a garment than you might think.

The Lace Shouldered Tank: Vanessa Bruno, $178

A little lace lining at the sleeve cap gives this slightly slouchy tank an edge. The sides have a different textured gusset and add dimension. Alone it would have been just enough for a late spring after work drink. Danish born, Paris based Vanessa Bruno creates unexpected shapes with cutouts and wrapping straps while mixing patterns and textures with a deft hand.

The Cropped Lady Sport Jacket: Lover, $450

This jacket kicked the power up a notch. The bold shoulders add a touch of welcomed severity, while the above-the-elbow sleeve and short cut keep it fresh. Started in 2001 by two Australian Lovers Susien Chong and Nic Briand, they have taken their creations of romantic, ethereal, loud and irreverent designs from a market stall all the way to Vogue and into the hearts of celebs and It girls like Keira Knightly and Alexa Chung.

The Blue Suede Shoe: Repetto, $250

This heeled and ever so slightly platformed lace up jazz shoe seemed the ideal fit for this work and play ready look. Rose Repetto began making ballet shoes in 1947 for her son – real ballerina’s point shoes. That has been the backbone of the company, revered by professional and amateur dancers alike, but she expanded to all kinds of shoes to make Repetto a part of every day life. “Like dance, our designs take skill and knowhow.” Expect a seriously well-worked shoe from Repetto. Perhaps AvaMaria owner Virketiene knows of Repetto from her ballroom dancing history.

The Ombré Turban: Cashmere, $80

No brand in particular, gradient blue cashmere scarf has been reworked into a turban for this particular look. It gives the office aesthetic both a more playful and more intimidating edge simultaneously. Learn how to tie a turban like this in a minute.

The Delicate Cuff: Nagicia, $248

Part of the butterfly collection by Tricia Kim, this skeletal cuff is barely there but vibrant at once. She chooses her materials. When she uses gemstones, they are hand-made with love in Bali. Kim feels that she is the loving intermediary of beauty.

The Home Sweet Home Ring: J. Davis Studio, $138

Brooklyn based silversmith Jill Davis takes her jewelry home with miniscule house imagery. On this ring, the homes are sitting within a circle, perhaps of trust. Outfit complete.

I’m not always a fan of her new hair, but I’m so glad Emma Watson was number one on Nylon magazine’s 2010 best dressed list. And the other nine aren’t so bad either.

Forget About Audrey Hepburn, Who’s Your Beauty Icon?

Ask any female celebrity, “Who’s your beauty icon?” and she’ll likely answer Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, or Marilyn Monroe. But while those three classic beauties might be the most obvious contenders, they aren’t the only ones. I have a friend with red hair and fair skin who considers Julianne Moore her beauty icon, and takes cues from photos of Moore as to whether she can pull off a blue-ish red lipstick or a peachy blush herself. I also prefer having a current beauty icon because then her looks change with the trends.

Right now, I’m completely inspired by Alexa Chung (above), a British model/writer/TV host. (I’m not the only one; she just won a British Fashion Award.) Her clothes are quirky but put-together, and her makeup is the same way. Chung somehow makes neutral brown eye shadows pop yet can follow that up for her next outing with just mascara and bold fuchsia lipstick; she seems like the type of woman who would never fall into a beauty rut. In fact, my brown-to-blonde ombré hair color was inspired by her—and since she just chopped her hair into a cute shaggy bob this week, I’m thinking of trying it myself. (Allure)

Teen Vogue’s 50 Best Dressed of 2010

Teen Vogue named Alexa Chung the best dressed celebrity of 2010, followed by a series of questionable choices. Choices that raised questions like “Who let Katy Perry (#35) anywhere near a best-dressed list?” And “Who are half of these alleged celebrities?”

Lea Michele (#5), Kristin Stewart (#7) Taylor Swift (#8) and Olivia Palermo (#9) somehow all made the top 10. I know this is Teen Vogue, but let’s raise the bar a little and maybe swap ‘em out for Emma Watson (#16), Keira Knightley (#20), Chloë Sevigny (#18) and Freida Pinto (#21).

Though I will say that I am glad that Kelly Osborune (#25) made the list. She’s really come into her own style, plus I love her with Joan Rivers on E!’s Fashion Police. If only they would get rid of that damned orange skeleton, Giuliana Rancic.

Meanwhile, three out of four Gossip Girls made the top 50: Leighton Meester (#19) and Jessica Szohr (#32), however (non-teen) Vogue‘s Best Dressed cover girl Blake Lively has to settle for #23. Anna‘s other Angels, Anne Hathaway (#49) and Sienna Miler (who is apparently still considered a celebrity) bring up the rear.

The multi-room party is featuring blue tones with holograms, fortune tellers and performers; like a trippy Parisian circus. The event is also featuring I-Pads and a theater where guests can truly delve into the world of Opium; and to experience the world of Opium means a 3D scene with rotating disco booths, spectacular panoramic film, & intense effects.

Notorious photographer Mark “The Cobrasnake” Hunter will be present to snap shots of the celebrity guests, which include Rachel Zoe, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Maggie Gyllenhaal as well as the who’s who of the fashion and beauty worlds. Dj’s of the evening are fashionista Alexa Chung and Alexandra Richards, who are giving attendees I-Pod giftcards with a playlist from their set, which includes some classic Jimi Hendrix. This will be an affair long remembered!

On January 11th, Mulberry’s new SS10 style, the Alexa, will be hitting stores. The Alexa is named after ‘girl of the moment’ and fellow Brit, Alexa Chung. When Emma Hill saw that Alexa was carrying an old Mulberry men’s briefcase style, the Elkington, she loved and was inspired by the look it created. She took the masculine briefcase shape, updated it a little bit with some feminine touches and named it after the inspiration – Alexa.

Emma presented the bag to Chung and she immediately fell in love with it – she could not stop carrying it during SS10 NYFW and still carries it to this day.

The Alexa comes in regular and oversized shapes. It is available in all leather (oak, navy, yellow, black), a lambskin with snake trim (pink, black), shiny leopard print (oak, pink) and a great summer tweed (beige). Prices range from $950 (summer tweed) to $1595 (oversized lambskin with snake trim). The bag works well in the utilitarian trend that was prevalent on the SS10 runways.
