- Clearly mistaking the German premiere of Men in Black III for the Las Vegas premiere of Men in the Back IV, alleged model Micaela Schaefer trashed it up in a dress seemingly made of recycled VHS tape.
- In what has to be regarded as one of the greatest — and most inexplicable — comebacks in recent memory, Jennifer Lopez tops the Forbes annual Celebrity 100 list for the first time, unseating Lady Gaga who falls to a respectable fifth place behind perennial power player Oprah, and fellow poptarts Justin Bieber and Rihanna.
The Meatpacking District’s hottest new bottle service-heavy nightclub Stash is designed to look like a jewelry box.
Odile Burger loves NYC fashion so much, she opened Wooster Shop to give her fellow Swiss fashionistas a taste.

FashionIndie isn’t the only place for free, booty-dropping mixtapes.
We at FashionIndie love a good tranny. (Not PC, we know and don’t care.) Nothing would make us happier than to see tran everywhere we went. That being said we’ve picked 10 werqing girls that could definitely spice up the very mundane runways of Milan this season. And hell most of them can teach these 12 year old girls a walking lesson. (Looking at you Lindsey Wixson)

And now here are the girls:

1. Raja

The most recent winner of our Rupaul’s Drag Race would kill in Milan. We tuned in every week to the “reality competition” to watch her creative costumes and fierce runway walk. Her legs were made for the signature thigh high slits of Versace.

The Limelight Marketplace is basically a high-end mall operating out of a decommissioned Episcopal church on Sixth Ave and 20th Street in New York — that popper-lined Xanadu known as Chelsea. With sales and popularity ever dwindling, its owner Jack Menashe is planning a $4 million overhaul to turn it into a department store — “not unlike Barneys” — that will be known simply as Limelight.

Originally a nightclub in the 80s and 90s, the original Limelight closed about 10 years ago and went through a series of other nightlife reincarnations before the marketplace was born in May of last year.

I personally remember when Limelight was known as Avalon during my gay-underaged-college-partying days, though I’ve never been to the marketplace. Mostly because a.) I hate malls — especially in Manhattan; this isn’t Jersey, give me a storefront — and b.) it just sounded all kinds of bougie. And not in the fun, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills way.

But now that the bloom is off that rose, Menashe is changing direction and has already gutted some of that fancy dead weight: “We just actually terminated a bunch of tenants, so the whole main floor is being opened up now.” Heartwarming.

Along with the department store makeover, Limelight will also get an aesthetic makeover with a stronger fashion angle. The stainglass windows will be more visible thanks to all of those wiped out tenants, the walls will be darker, the lights will be dimmer but the DJ wil continue to play on.

Oh, yeah, there’s a DJ — leftover in a pile of glitter and cocaine from one of Amanda Lepore‘s orgiastic wild nights some ten years ago, no doubt.

By giving Limelight a darker, moodier atmosphere, Menashe hopes to “add a level of sophisticatedness to it, if that’s a word.” It’s not, but good luck anyway, Jack.

Sounds like you’ll need it. [WSJ]

Though Heatherette is all but ancient history, Richie Rich is still a glam club kid at heart. Amidst a sea of models – bones and high ponytails from wall to ceiling – I met up with the designer and his design director Angelo Lambrou during a casting call for Richie’s runway show. This will be his second collection for his eponymous label and will be held at the Hammerstein Ballroom on February 10th at 9 pm. Proceeds will go to benefit two causes very close to Richie’s sequined heart: DoSomething.org and Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. We discussed Richie’s fabulous inspirations, his fabulous friends and the first time he met Madonna. Which was, you guessed it, fabulous.

On this season’s aesthetic:

It’s sort of 20s/30s glamour meets East Village punkiness/funkiness. Imagine if Marie Antoinette fell out of the sky and landed in the middle of the East Village. We’re just going to let her have fun. But it’s going to be more refined and upscale.

On his partnership with Angelo:

Angelo’s kind of my design director, we’re a team, doing this line together. I hate titles, that’s the thing, but we’re having fun. We met on 7th St when I had my line, Heatherette, that was my studio. But he’s right across the street still on 7th St. Keeping it real with the East Village. I was looking for someone to partner up with me and have fun and direct my crazy mind. It’s like when you decorate the Christmas tree, if you have too many ideas you need to edit it…I think Angelo brings refinement to my glittery fun.

On his upcoming runway show:

The show this season is on February 10th at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Fashion Week is usually very exclusive, invite only, but I’m opening my show up like a rock concert this year, letting people in who never really get a chance to go to a fashion show.

I never realized, like a lot of my friends that aren’t in the fashion industry, I’ll invite them to my show and they’re like, “Oh my god, it was so much fun! I’ve never been to a fashion show before.” I always take it for granted because that’s what I do. It’s fun when people who haven’t experienced it get a chance to and see what it’s about. And it’s as much fun to watch the crowd as it is to watch the show.

This year I’m selling tickets to the show and proceeds go to DOsomething.org as well as Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, which is a charity for little kids who unfortunately have cancer. We have a good friend who passed away in the last couple days…It felt weird at first, selling tickets, but you know if you can help people it makes sense.

Then again this spring, I think I’m going to do another show to launch a partnership with a Fast Fashion House. I guess I’ll be the first designer that’s ever been the face of something they’ve done.

On casting models:

I look for personality. There are so many beautiful people out there that model. I don’t like one kind of look, I like everything. That’s why I love New York. It’s like an 80’s Bennetton ad. You have the amazing black girl with the Asian kid and the gay kid…I just think we all wear clothes, you don’t have to be a size 0 because beauty comes in all sizes.

On pre-Fashion Week jitters:

I don’t get nervous, really, it’s more like happy nerves, excited, energetic. I’m always like what if nobody shows up? I probably asked my mom that before my fifth birthday party. I don’t really get nervous or scared or intimidated, I’m more excited like it’s Christmas Eve. I just want everybody to come and have a good time.

The worst part is when something goes wrong, like when kids can’t get in or something’s wrong with the door. I’m backstage trying to get everything together and I have all these friends on the alert. You don’t know what’s going on and you end up getting in trouble the next three days or five months. That’s where the nerves come from. That’s the nerve-wracking part.

On other fashion shows he’s looking forward to:

I always look forward to all of it. I go to Marc Jacobs every year. He’s an old friend. I love him, he’s supported me a long time as well. But I just go with the flow. Fashion Week is such a rollercoaster, that’s why I like doing opening night because then it’s over with and I can just have fun.

On his celebrity friends walking the runway:

I didn’t really intend, when I started doing fashion shows, to have celebrities at the end. They just happened to be my friends and were out and about. A lot of people in the media are like, “Who are you having this season?” Your guess is as good as mine. I usually just call up some of my friends, ask if they want to do this. If it’s part of a charity, even better. It just kind of unfolds.

I’ll definitely have surprises this season. I don’t know the surprises until they happen. They’re really always last minute. Last year Ellen [Degeneres] finally called two days before [the show]…

I remember one season, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton were in a fight. So Paris is in one car and Britney is in another car. I went out to get them but they both knew each other was there. I didn’t know they were feuding and they decided not to come out of their cars.

And Kimora Lee was also walking so she’s like, “Well, where are Paris and Britney?” I said they’re not coming out and Kimora goes “Well I guess I’m the finale!”

Kimora was great, I like having other designers walk. I think it should all be a big family. I don’t believe in the whole competitive thing, we’re all having fun for the same reason.

On meeting his icons:

My friends enticed me to move to New York and I sort of moved here on a whim. The night I came they threw a party for me at this club in Union Square. I had long finger waves and was wearing this discoball-ish headpiece when Madonna walks up to me with a beer and a cigarette in hand. She just kind of looked at me like, “Who is this?” and said, “Hey, what’s up?”

I’ve always been a huge fan, obviously, of hers – and I was just like, “WOW. I’m staying in New York!”

And the next night, I was living at the Hotel 17 in Gramercy Park with my friend Amanda Lepore, who was my neighbor and David Bowie was in the elevator with me. I grew up with my brother loving David Bowie. We ended up doing a photoshoot literally outside of my hotel room with Interviewmagazine. Then two nights later I met Debbie Harry!

New York came alive in a week. It just felt like it was meant to be. I think that’s why I appreciate fashion and pop culture so much: the sheer will of having a dream, letting it unfold and hopefully inspiring other people to realize their dreams. Which is what all those artists have done for me.

On his own style:

I pretty much wear everything from Dots and H&M mixed with Chanel, everything from Marc Jacobs to Prada, Dior, The Gap, vintage. I’m just all over the map. I think if you think too much it doesn’t make sense.

But on the flip side, if you do a fashion shoot and somebody else styles you, it’s fun to see how they envision you. Like popstars for example. It’s not really their vision, but somebody else giving it to them. Even Gaga, she’s bringing back to the surface what club kids did for years, but she’s smart about it. She has good people around her.

Kate Moss’s best friend, he’s gay, told me there’s always a good f****t around any fabulous girl. [laughs]

Last night’s Chandelier holiday party was not the sort.

GROWN men dressed as stuffed animals, a naked intern peep show, shirtless and sequined-pantsed men, and a transsexual Santa – you might’ve choked on your eggnog.

A man dressed as a shark greeted guests and stretched out a sign: “Make Out with Somebody Tonight.” Bikini clad girls passed out cotton candy and hot dogs. And Amanda Lepore sat atop her velvety red throne as an undeniably naughty Santa.

Next year skip Grandma’s Holiday Festivus and stick with Chandelier. Those guys can party.

It seems like photographers, editors and stylists have slipped on their galoshes and waded through the archives of my wet dreams what with all the naked (and semi-naked) male models running rampant in editorials these days.
Hercules Magazine gives us the goods, courtesy of Nicola Formichetti and Mariano Vivanco. You may have seen the video (if not, what are you waiting for?), but the photos are equally as hot. And feature just as much naked Amanda Lepore.

Glad to see he’s not afraid to show a little tail. Rimshot!

Next up we have Indonesian escort personal trainer Zaidan photographed by Arno Roca, who apparently doesn’t believe in good lighting.

Seriously, can we shed a little light on this business, I can barely see what’s going on here.

And last, but certainly not least, Andrew Stetson and Chad White in their underwear.

Thank god Chad is so hot or his sneakers would totally kill the vibe.

I like to end it on a classy note. Happy ogling!

David LaChapelle has his own way of doing an art opening. Last night at Paul Kasmin Gallery, for the vernissage of his American Jesus show, he had cameos from Julian Schnabel and Lenny Kravitz (pictured above, with LaChapelle and Amanda Lepore) and a crowd of people photographing him as he danced—in a white caftan, no less. As it happened, there was a Jersey Shore party going on at the same time next door at Marquee—”probably a metaphor for my life,” LaChapelle shrugged.

That life is a busy one at the moment, with Chelsea the latest stop on the attention-getting show’s world tour. The abridged American Jesus exhibition at Paul Kasmin puts extra focus on three photos depicting the late Michael Jackson (well, a lookalike) as Christ and features a striking image of Naomi Campbell as Cleopatra. A broadly expanded version of the show opens at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art later this month. “It’s going to go on until people don’t want to see it any more, I guess,” LaChapelle said at the Standard’s High Line Room, where he was joined by the likes of Cynthia Rowley and Rory Tahari for the post-opening dinner. Speaking of going on, so did the party—the LaChapelle crew adjourned upstairs to the Boom Boom Room for some postprandial dancing, where they mixed with the likes of Yigal Azrouël and J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons. It was the last Boom, so to speak—the final late night of BBR revelry before the space is reborn as a private club after the summer. LaChapelle’s own take on resurrection? “I believe that there’s more to me than what’s contained between my hat and my shoes,” he said.

Last night Daniel Saynt & Becks headed to the David Barton Gym Toy Drive hosted by David Barton, Susanne Bartsch, Marc Jacobs, and Narciso Rodriquez. We drank, we partied, we found every eligible gay in New York.

The highlights of our night were all on our Twitter feed so if you’re a subscriber you’re in luck.

Here’s the rundown:

- We arrive fashionably late, realize we totally missed Marc and Lorenzo, consider leaving for two seconds

- Patrick McDonald (New York Dandy and Launch My Line star) doesn’t bring a gift and almost gets refused at the door. He makes up for it by breaking out his wallet.

- We make our way upstairs through a gym that can only be described as the place where clubbers go to bench press. Becks spots someone who looks like Eric Bana from behind. Turns out to be Larry King from the front.

- We whiz by some performers on the way to the bar (where the fuck is the bar), an oldie dressed like a Lady Gaga reject, a women/snow bird, a nutcracker on stilts and a Christmas tree man. Trannies, fake tits and manicured eyebrows galore. Guess it’s officially Gaymas.

- Pass the giant discoball/DJ booth on the way to the bar. Michael Musto wears a hideous Holiday sweater. Way better than the last time I saw him.

- Finally make it to the bar. Double up on VodkaCrans. Spot a man who’s vaguely familiar eying me by the bar. Give my “I’m not gay, but I’m comfortable enough to acknowledge your interest” smile. Can’t figure out who this little man is or why he’s so familar? He takes off.

- iPhone Google Search. It was Narciso Rodriquez.

- Now on the search for Narciso after a Wikipedia fact update; He’s Cuban, from Jersey, and I’m currently wearing his cologne. Plan to ask him if he’s seen Jersey Shore, what his fondest memory of summer on the beach was, and whose his favorite dictator. jk.

- Spot Narciso talking to a troublesome troupe of twinks who obviously know who he is. Realize my hands smell like Chipotle (pre-Barton Dinner) and decide a bathroom pitstop might be smarter.

- Standing in line with Becks for the bathroom, up ahead of us is a black gay Ken Doll with fake grey hair and a permanent smile. I take photo.

- Still in line. See Narciso exit. Maybe next time little man.

- A gay reminiscent of Don Johnson begins conversation. Asks if I’m with anyone. I point to the wife.

- The three of us begin long winded conversation on being young and married in New York City. He stresses its impossibility to last. We respectfully disagree. Late vow to never talk to people who look like Don Johnson.

- Finally make it into bathroom. Don’t see the point to clean my hands anymore, but do so anyway. jk.

- Go to check out some performances. A woman strips. The crowd goes wild.

- I spot Amanda Lepore. She’s pretty much naked. Nothing says Christmas better than full frontal.

- Becks spots an old gay friend from Cleveland. You have no idea how many times this happens. It’s like they make them their and ship them over.

-David Barton hits the stage. The look and feel of the gym instantly makes perfect sense.

- Richie Rich is here. No one seems to care. So sad to be a flickering light. Stay forever young little buddy.

- The party begins to clear even though the booze is still flowing. Is it the gym atmosphere that prevents the boys from filling up on empty alcohol calories?

- We make our way out, Becks teases about posting a Missed Encounters on Craigslist for Narciso.

- The night ends, but not before seeing a pair of Nina Ricci claw shoes in action. Amazingly cool.

Late last week news came out that tranny-mess Amanda Lepore was releasing a make-up line. I guess for other tranny-messes or for those who want to look like a tranny?!

But it may be awhile before the cosmetic line is released, SO here’s a list of tips of how you too can look like Amanda Lepore…

1. No eyebrows

If you have eyebrows-shave them! Then take a pencil and draw an eyebrow of your choice. Most trannies go with the thin arched eyebrow that makes you look like you’ve had an eyebrow lift.

2. Blowfish Lips

If budget permits get as many collagen injections as you legally are allowed to get. Yes, these injections will set you back a ways, but you can’t get the same look with out them. If budget doesn’t permit, take some red Play Doh and craft your own blowfish lips.

3.Fake Eyelashes

God may have given you two sets of eyelashes, but those were just a starter set. Go down to your local drugstore and pick up two or three sets of fake eyelashes. Get some glue and layer each set over each other. Be sure not to get the glue in your eye.

Nobody wants to lose an eye in the process of looking like Amanda Lepore.

If you are having trouble knowing weather you look ‘tranny’ enough just ask yourself this: ‘Do I look like a blow-up doll’? If the answer is yes, then you have succusfuly made yourself up like Amanda Lepore!

We met a bunch of cool designers as well as other bloggers and fashionistas. There were good drinks, good food and good friends all there to talk fashion and relax. We will be hosting another one soon so keep an eye out for more information.

We headed over to POP Burger for a quick bite and a drink. On the way I decided to wear Rebecca’s super cool derby hat, and once we got there we couldn’t help but notice this little Agyness Deyn wannabe…Look what you have done Agyness!

We ended the night supporting the has been Amanda Lepore. Yes I said it, Has been. You can argue and she isn’t but with the way you voted on our last Amanda Lepore article you more or less sealed the deal. To top it off poor Amanda had no one at her party. We stopped by quickly to be shocked at the lack of trannys, homosexuals, and regular party goers alike. There were a few stragglers and a monk. It was a sad sight. Poor Amanda.

Before you read too much into this post and begin labeling me a “homophobe”, let me pre-fence this post by stating my view. I believe that every man and woman has the right to choose the way they want to live, as long as the way they live does not impose on the rights of others. Sexuality is more than a choice, it is a right that each of us deserve.

Now on to the juicy bits…

This fashion season was strung full of the type of shows you’d only normally see at a very special night at The Cock (NYC nightclub for those not in the know). Men paraded around in womans underwear as the line between androgyny and sexuality were crossed to produce a metaphoric smorgasbord of shock and awe over the sillohettes of masculintity taking over the long delicate curves of the female staple, the dress. It was seen at Marcos Hall (his invitation feature Andre J wearing one of his signature looks) and at New York Couture (a show we sponsored and fully supported). Whether is be drag queen or cross dresser, tranny or something altogether different, it seemed like amongst the indie designers, it was finally okay to be “a boy in a dress”.

But was it really “okay”? Did the looks that came clogging down the runway in size 14 heels really appeal to the end user, the woman who would eventually wear the dress? I’m still looking for answers on this one, but it seems that the few women I spoke to displayed a general disinterest or disconnect when a man is rocking a look that was made for her body.

Andre J walking Marcos Hall

Andre J, the bearded, “not a tranny, not a drag queen” model, has been getting a ton of attention for his over the top persona. Running with a crew that includes Amanda Lepore, the Heatherette and David LaChapelle darling, who lost her “twig and berries” years ago, Andre J seems to be a rising star in the game, making the cover of French Vogue and recently landing on Confessions of a Casting Directors Top 25 of 2007 list.

But in an industry where the attitude is “the less you see of a model the better”, will a 6 foot tall man with a beard really help sell a dress or will he just distract from the real purpose of a fashion show?

I guess the real question comes down to where or not the looks are “spectacle” or “spectacular”. If a designer creates a collection that is truly amazing, does it really mater how it’s presented on the runway? Or should a designer play it safe and stick with the classic mantra, “let boys be boys, and girls be girls” to keep the runway free from confusion? Weigh in and discuss indies cause personally I feel that with Heatherette down and out, it may be a very long time before a boy makes it back onto the runways of Bryant Park. Are you for or against men in dresses on the fashion runways?

What a f*cking whirlwind it’s been!!! So I started this NY Fashion Week a bit unexcited. Heatherette was out. Marc seemed to be missing. And the only thing remotely interesting seemed to be Chloe Sevgny at Webster Hall, which believe me isn’t that exciting since my only memory of the Hall comes from when I was 18 and throwing up chunks in some upstairs bathroom. I guess that would explain earlier posts signifying my pre-exaustion.

Day one came and I slept in. I missed opening ceremony with the Lipstick Jungle girls and ran to the tents just in time to grab my pass before Duckie Brown. That collection disappointed (sorry boys, I know I suck) and the next thing to look forward to was a meeting with my lawyers (we’ve been discussing the legal blah blah of a merger with Trendible.com. Go there, join and tell your friends). Heading back to the office in the pouring rain, I thought it was only right to curse the heavens as a speediant cab drove me past the tents at just the right time to see a bevy of paparazzis snapping at somenobody from One Tree Hill or America’s Next Top Porn Star.

At the office we quickly regrouped. Busie to Yeolee at the New Museum and the rest of us to meet with Cassie of New York Couture and the MTV True Life crew (yeah Indies we are being filmed by True Life!!!). If you don’t know New York Couture, get to know it. This girl is the next Heatherette and her show next week will feature the very best in new artists, drag queens and live performances. We walked through sound and lighting for the show and made sure that timing was okay. Jessica interviewed Cassie (seriously this girl can be an anchor, someone hire her) and we made our way out of Rebel to head to Edwing D’Anglo’s “Awakening” show.

Amanda and the late designer

After about an hour and a half, Amanda Lepore randomly strolled in. We stopped caring and headed out early since the place was packed with non-industry types and we completely couldn’t miss our “Project Runway” secret show. Bumped into Christian (the kid), Jack (the Flashdancer), and Jay (season one). Fell in love with Elisa (she is too cute).

Victorya Hong showed a collection which was even “too safe” for Banana Republic. After, we ran to the tents to see Venexiana. Rebecca’s addiction to fur was in high force as the collection played through. Early on we saw some strong pieces but later on the beauty queen/My Super Sweet 16 dresses failed to impress. After we congratulated Kati Stern, said hi to Malan Breton (our Project Runway favorite who’s showing at the tents this year) and Nole (Top Model Dude) and chilled with our favorite photographer Rick Louis.

Chick at Seven Party

Later we headed to Tenjune for the Duckie Brown party and then skipped it to head to Arena for Seven New York‘s party. Insane till I got a bit tipsy and headed home which I regretted since B.F.F’s stayed and chilled with designer Bernard Willhelm.

Day Two.

Headed out to Academy of Arts. Loved Juhee Chung for women and Shady N. R. Elias for men (change your name to Shady Elias and you’ll be fine). Eel skin might be my knew favorite skin thanks to Elias. Brunch at Penelope’s and then back to the tents for Anorexic Herchcovich. Every other model looked like they had cancer and we’re on life support. For some reason I was expecting more from this Brazilian designer, especially since most Brazilian girls are a bit more sumptuously hot (i.e. Gisele). Feed your models dude, cause the girls bulging veins really distracted me from your halfway decent collection.

Fashion Indie supports anti-life support models. This dude doesn’t.

Backstage I congratulated Cobra Snake on his Paper Magazine Nightlife Award win (I’m guessing that’s like the Oscar’s of his field) and was quickly entranced by Cory Kennedy, who seems so much more down to earth in person (I officially retract about half the things I may have said or thought about her). Rebecca thought she looked a bit “nappy” and I was a bit in shock that I was the only one in my crew of four that knew who she really was (I really need to stop reading Nylon).

Two of the Misshapes showed up. Leigh needs to eat something, pronto. The girl used to be hot, but now she’s just scary looking (also see black is out, wear some color).

Was tired after the show so headed home. Skipped Ruffian, Sass & Bide, Rock & Republic, Alexander Wang and all the afterparties. Guess I’m getting too old for this sh*t.

Final Thoughts.

- Thanks to Bob Bland of Brooklyn Royalty (amazing dull name for a pretty cool girl) for pointing out Anorexic Herchcovich’s view on eating disorders. You we’re right, we can’t support this.

- Cory Kennedy is still cool. I can’t really hate on anyone successful who is younger than me.

- Cobra Snake, also cool but he really should dress better and get a hair cut. (if you need a stylist please feel free to contact us.)

- Cassie K. of NY Couture is the next Heatherette. Spread it like hotcakes.

- Edwing D’angelo is no Marc Jacobs. Start your show on time next season, buddy.
