The Inter-Views of Fashion: Andre Leon Talley

While giving a speech in Philadelphia on Thur, Talley gave the audience a few tips for success:

Tip One: “Remember where you came from and how important that is, and that will sustain you,” he said. He was raised in North Carolina by his grandmother, who worked as a maid at nearby Duke University, but always dressed to the nines for church. “She didn’t have a lot, but she had remarkable style,” he added. “When I was 13, an uncle asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said, ‘A fashion editor.’ I had been reading Vogue for some time by then. My uncle said, ‘What is a fashion editor?’ My grandmother defended my decision. She always encouraged me.”

Tip Two:
“Always be curious and do your research.” While he was working for Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1975, she handed him a dress Claudette Colbert wore in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1934 screen version of “Cleopatra” and asked him to style the mannequin appropriately. He went to the library and decided that Cleopatra should be sunkissed and got special permission to have his model painted gold. “It matched the dress,” he added. “Mrs. Vreeland loved it.”

Tip Three: Travel and find beauty and style where you go.

Tip Four: Practice good manners. “I once had to follow a woman from Philadelphia named Mrs. T. Charlton Henry to Paris for her couture appointments at ,” Talley said. “It was an assignment for WWD. She wrote me a note after and said, ‘The best thing about you is your wonderful manners.’ I saved the note.”

Tip Five: Fetch coffee if you have to. “When you are lucky enough to land an internship or get your first job, do not be offended when someone asks you to make a Starbucks run,” he noted. “At my first job working for Andy Warhol, I answered phones, ran the stamp machine to the post office, made $50 a week and had to live at the YMCA. But I was literally introduced to the world through that job. Mr. Warhol encouraged me with enthusiasm. He thought everything you did was great.”

Tip Six: Find a mentor. Vreeland, he said, was his most important. “She taught me everything. is now my mentor. She is not that person in ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ She is like Catherine the Great of Russia. She has kept that magazine on top, raised money for the Met and for the Democratic party.”

Reason Number One Million Why We Hate Andre Leon Talley

Page Six reported that had another little hissy fit this Friday, after a man accidentally sprayed some champagne on him before the show. According to the reporter the Great Wall of Talley immediately stood up screaming, “Look what you’ve done! I have to wear these clothes all day!” When the man attempted to show some remorse by toweling off the XXXL sized joke, he lashed out again saying, “Get your hands off me!” Oh please ALT lets not for one second pretend that you haven’t had a man spray all over your DD cup chest, then attempt to towel it off. There could have been way worse things that could have happened. All you had to do was sit next to at the show, it would have been no surprise if that gnome smelled like an entire bottle of bubbly.

’s fame hit us from the blindspot, but we’re not complaining. We like a girl who isn’t afraid of expression; Katy’s always been a girl who speaks, or sings, her mind; her fashion choices reflect this as well.

Though Mary-Kate Olsen is often judged for her “out-there” fashion choices, we like that she knows how to make an entrance. She’s not afraid of her style and she certainly knows how to put together an outfit.

Top 15 Worst Dressed:

“Do, Do You Got A First Aid Kit,” for her face! This Danity Kane singer is always wearing to much makeup and not enough clothes. Aubrey O’Day used to look good, but she has really been a tranny mess of late.

used to be such a cute innocent girl from England. She used to dress well, and fairly conservative too. Now she is a cracked out drug and alcohol abuser who spends more time “powdering her nose” than getting dressed (if she event puts clothes on).

She started out as a “Heroine Chic” hipster forerunner. Now Cory Kennedy is just a heroine user who just blends in with all the Williamsburg hipsters. She has become surprisingly unoriginal, and could seriously use a shower.

I can’t stand the fact that is tricking the impressionable minds of the American youth that leather leggings are fashionable. We give her props for trying to support smaller indie designers, but when you look like that you’re almost giving them a bad rep. Let us not forget that week span where she was photographed wearing the same outfit everyday.

What did we really expect from the offspring of a professional wrestler and 2008’s cougar of the year. I think it is safe to say doesn’t know best.

has really lived up to her sex tape making reputation by continuing her slutty appearance off camera. You know your dad always says how you may give the wrong impression to guys with the way you dress? Well this is what he was talking about.

There is someting ironic about dressing like a tough rocker and then proceeding to threaten transexuals like does. If you were ever confused on what an “emo” kid looks like, well here is your answer. I personally have never had problems with tattoos, but facial piercings are a totally different story.

I thought we were over the guy liner and flat ironing our hair phase, but just won’t let it go. Not that I don’t occasionally enjoy wearing a comfortable hooded sweatshirt. But when thats all you wear and you always have the hood up, it gets old fast. Lucky for him his wife isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, or she might force him to change his look for once.

Is it bad that “Little Miss Sunshine” makes me want to puke every time I see her? Yes, she may be twelve but regardless dresses like crap. We live in a decade where twelve year old girls are supposed to look eighteen, and well it’s no fun when you actually look twelve. Can someone say stylist?

When you are following in the footsteps of Cory Kennedy (who is already on this list), what did you expect? You are a wannbe hipster who spends your C-list celebrity paycheck on coke and alcohol. Oh and the OC wasn’t even that good! Guess this is what happens when you have to go back to shopping at Urban Outfitters because your career is over.

This Canadian punk wannabe, , should be deported immediately. The pink, black and white color scheme was done years ago, right along with pink streaks in your hair. You tour is doing terrible and so is your stylist.

Sam looks decent for a guy, but still not even that good. We are over the whole fedora and high top sneakers everyday. I would pay to see her in a dress, but I guess one of them had to be the man of the relationship, and it seems like Lindsay wouldn’t give in.

Since her boy toy Spencer came out and said how he gets paid to go places and gets all this free stuff, we can’t help but think that the disgusting clothes Heidi wears were free. Heidi is exactly what fashion shouldn’t be. Her style is terrible and as fake as her chest…and nose…and hair color…and reality show!

Well does dress right for the job of being the biggest MySpace whore of all time. She is the only one with bad enough style that both guys and girls don’t want to date her.

This self proclaimed “trendsetter” couldn’t be any further from that in my eyes. When you show up to red carpet events in graduation gowns and turbans claiming to be fashionable you know you have a problem. You know you aren’t looking so good when every other poorly dressed person on this list is complimenting you, and every one on the best dressed list is laughing at you from a distance. I will say his best accessory is his little “mushroom cut” rocking friend Anna Wintour, but only because it dumbs down his awfulness. Fashion should be different and outlandish at the time, but practical at the same time. Andre doesn’t have that.

Fashion Quoteable: Andre Leon Talley

We’re back with another edition of  Fashion Quoteable-This one is for my boss Daniel, who took a beating last week for comments against and fat people. Hopefully this will help.

“Most of the Vogue girls are so thin, tremendously thin, because Miss Anna don’t like fat people.”

Backstage at Giuliano Fujiwara’s Mens S/S 09

Officially proves that men are pansies. Hopefully, the beefcakes from Westwood come over and beat the girly crap out of these men. Feathers in the hair is the ultimate no no for a guy’s guy, and the long crotch are just a form of trickery (if you know what I mean). Also, I know is trying oh so hard to bring back the , but the upside down garbage can is not the way to go about that trend.

Fashion and Politics Don’t Mix

So last night Barack Obama had a fund-raiser in Manhattan an event hosted by -who brought his fashion friends like Calvin Klein and . According to Page Six, politico’s are worried that Talley is going to ruin with his styling whims:

“Andre wants to take over the way he commandeered ,” said our source. Talley told the Times earlier this month: “A black Camelot moment is the right moment for the Obamas, and so the faux pearls, the A-line dresses, the Jackie flip are obviously all part of how her image strategy has evolved. Some Dems fear that in the months ahead, Talley, a huge fan of Oscar de la Renta, will steer Michelle into a jacket or an outfit even more ill-advised.”

Yes because fashionistas all over America will turn their back on change if dares to wear a metallic .

Just say no to the
