Japanese artist Takaya Hanayuishi takes the art of hairstyling to a new extreme with his Hanayui Collection, in which he adorned his models’ heads with delectable flowers and vegetables.

National Hairball Awareness Day (we didn’t know about this either) is coming up on April 27 and the pet product company FURminator has decided to raise awareness with this, for lack of a better word, creative hairball sculpture contest. Blogger Laura Bennett created this Lady Gaga contender, reminding us about the beauty can be found in eating a bunch of hair and hacking it back up.

Picasso once said of Marc Chagall, ”When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is.” His impeccable color palette, along with the style of the times (1915) laid ground for today’s look. This painting is aptly titled Birthday (for today is mine) and makes me yearn for deep reds and florals.

Most of us probably wonder what it’s like to write on a typewriter, in any sort of earnest. Now imagine typing with pigments rather than letters. Artist Tyree Callahan pondered that exact thought and set out to rebuild a machine that could type with all the colors of the wind. He polished up an old 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter, scouring the lingering nicotine residue from the Hunter S. Thompson-like writer that slaved for years, cigarette in mouth, over the old QWERTY keys. He reset the letters with color swatches and the cartridges with watercolors. One month later, the world has the first watercoloring typewriter.

Artist Damien Hirst is getting much media attention in recent days for his new exhibition spread across the corners of the globe. Damien Hirst the Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011 is the current main attraction in all 11 Gagosian galleries (arguably the most powerful gallery empire in the world) from New York to Hong Kong. The show has garnered much controversy, praise, and vehement debate from critics, notable artists, and the public. Love it, or hate it, Hirst and Gagosian are spot on in terms of creating buzz. Art Basel has come and gone and so have my dreams of Hirst and Murakami inspired bacchanal revelry. I was motivated enough to start my art collection, but then I checked my bank balance and realized Cafe Americanos and taxis really do add up after a while. The plus side? Marc Jacobs is the latest designer to get the museum treatment. As art director of Louis Vuitton the brand is planning an exhibition based on the work Jacobs has done for the company.
