Though Callahan does admit, "I cannot imagine how one would create art with this in a practical way. If the paint could be automatically applied some way, it could be feasible. As it stands, the keys have to be manually reloaded with paint." This only makes me think of the practical application of this concept, but applied to the computer. Typing in color.. hmm.. computer programmers, are you seeing what I'm seeing?

The exhibit will launch Milan Fashion Week next month and will run from Sept. 22 to Oct. 9. A retrospective like this flames the rumours that he will more from Vuitton to Dior.

This is definitely a innovative and beautiful way to both serve as a memoriam for a tragic event that occured and advertising tool.

The exhibition was itself  fantastic.  Some of the films included in the exhibtion were Taxi Driver, The Aviator, & Vertigo. Our personal favorite attraction happened to be costumes from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. (Featured below)

The exhibition, which will be open to the public (FOR FREE!) starting today until June 19th 2011 at  Center 548 in New York City, celebrates the stories of obsessive craftsmanship behind some of cinema’s most iconic on-screen moments.  It takes 30 manual steps to create the perfect pair of Persol frames and  similarly this exhibit showcases how each instance of what appears on the silver screen  can take hours, weeks or even months of painstaking research and craftsmanship to develop and comes for a place of passion.

Erez works with one of fashion’s most visionary and relevant agencies, Kate Ryan. His style blends striking high fashion concepts with subtle artistic undertones. One has only to catch sight of Erez’s photography to realize his deep passion for his profession.

Recently Fashion Indie was awarded the chance to ask Erez about his incredible images and views on the industry. Here’s what the multimedia artist had to say.

Who or what influenced and shaped your photography style?

I began shooting at 16. As a teen growing up in Israel, I was always interested in magazines like The Face. Nick Knight and Javier Vallhonrat were photographers I admired.

The turning-point came when I moved to Paris to shoot for magazines like l’Uomo Vogue, Detour and 20 ans (of which Emmanuelle Alt, today editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, was fashion director).

You can still see traces of that influence in my work as a director and multi-media artist. For example I did a show at the International Fashion Festival in Japan, “Master Minds of Mode,” which was all about painting my subjects with lighting.

So many of your portrait shots not only convey a message, but have an artistic nature infused within. What’s involved in the creative process to capture your photos?

To each portrait shoot I bring 100% of my energy. I aim to capture the best of each subject, looking from the perspective of a warm heart with a cinematic sensibility. I’m only satisfied when magic happens on set, and have been fortunate to work with an amazingly talented team.

I spent almost three years shooting images for my first book “My Favorite T-Shirt,” which explores the lives of artists in New York. It was a fulfilling journey for me as an artist, very pure and honest – no digital, no retouching and no cropping. It felt like I was seeing everything for the first time.

I’m amazed with how you use location and setting to create a real depth in so many of your images. What are some secrets to making your surroundings work for you and not against you?

Some places really inspire me, such as Azerbaijan where I shot a story for Baku. You can see how we enjoyed shooting this in a behind-the-scenes video we made. I enjoy integrating subject and setting, creating a synthesis. An inspiring location helps create dynamism, movement and high energy, as well as the interaction of textures, colors and light. Trying to do justice to the setting, you have to make sure you’re not distracted from your subject.

What advice might you have for other young photographers who would like to achieve the same level you’re at?

Keep going. There are so many others in the field now, but you have to focus on ensuring that the amount of love you have for the craft shows up in the images. Trust yourself!

What’s your favorite camera to use on a fashion photography shoot?

I use Hasselblad with p+30, P45, Canon 5D Mark2 and MAMYA RZ. It all depends on the project.

We chatted with Cynthia about her involvement in the project, her passion for contemporary art, and what new things she has planned for the Cynthia Rowley brand.

How long have you been collecting art and what was your first collection piece?

My first art purchase was the definition of an impulse buy, at a charity event a friend brought me to. There were three pieces that I loved up for auction, and one—by an artist I had long admired—that I couldn’t resist. I bid what I could afford and then, because I wanted it so much, I bid a just a hair more…and won! It was a very small but oh so beautiful Louise Bourgeois sculpture. That was seven years ago, and the piece is now worth more than 15 times what I paid for it. But I’ll never part with it

What was your involvement in the development of Exhibition A?

I’m a huge fan of contemporary art. My husband and I are friends with a lot of artists, many of whom are featured on Exhibition A. Also, logistically speaking, we’ve given our support to the startup.

What is your favorite piece of art you’ve collected so far and why?

I could never choose!

Does your style and taste in art align with the style and design of your brand?

My interest in art has caused me to look at design from a more conceptual standpoint. I try to consider the craft of fashion design–the handwork, the tailoring, and special, one-of-a-kind elements. It’s impossible not to think about some artist or work when I’m designing the collection. There are many distinct inspirations that go into designing each season, and art is always one of them.

I’m such a fan of your sophisticated, yet edgy style.  What are some of your inspirations to keep this style fresh and modern?

I think we’ve come to be known for a collection that is sexy and sophisticated but also a little edgy and artistic, and a bit sporty. Every season I try to reinvent the wheel and experiment with new methods of fabrication, to create something that’s never been seen before.

You have also mastered the co-branding collaboration process so well. What do you look out for in a project when you decide to co-brand?

I want to add design to places that it has formerly been overlooked — like wetsuits, which we’ve done with Roxy. An object may be primarily functional, but why does that mean we have to ignore the aesthetic? In considering new projects, it’s important that it be innovative and also authentic to me and our brand. Collaborating on commodities is interesting to me in this way…It’s a very Warholian approach to design.

What does Cynthia Rowley have in store for 2011?

We’re excited about the new collection of Rowley/Roxy wetsuits that we have coming out in late spring, but at the moment we’re very focused on our Fall 2011 presentation for fashion week at Lincoln Center in February.

African-focused Cocody Productions served as Entertainment and Promotional Partner to The Project’s two private kickoff events. On the exhibition, Cocody Director Bright told us, “This partnership has been a perfect fit and defines what Cocody is all about: building bridges between Africa, The Diaspora, and mainstream New York. One does not have to go all the way to Africa to experience African people and culture. Africa is right here.”

It showcases works from over 100 artists from all over the world including all manner of designs (pottery, accessories and an African-version of the Michael Jackson glove).

Friday November 12 at 12pm EST Mr. Brainwash debuts his new print – the “MBW Shoe.”

Hand-finished silkscreen print on archival art paper with 10 color variant acrylic and spray paint, signed, numbered and thumb-printed by the artist himself. Sound cool? Um, is the sun hot right now? (Yes.)

Just when you think we’ve gotten as artistic as we could possibly be, a guy like Ben Wilson stumbles out onto the streets of London. Wilson brings a much more literal sense to the term street artist and paints used pieces of chewing gum found in various places throughout the city. Up to date Wilson says he’s made over 8,000 images, undergone an arrest and seems to have gained some notoriety in South Korea. Check out the rest of Wilson’s gum pieces here!

Controversial graffiti artist Banksy seems to have BP in his sights. He’s refashioned a childrens coin-ride to show off a dolphin jumping over a barrel of oil while trying to escape from a net. YAY to poignant art commentary for kids!!! Video of the dolphin in action after the jump.

It encompasses the world’s smallest workshops, accessible to only the privileged few, and boasts techniques and workmanship operating at a level most of us can’t even dream about. That said, I love that it exists alongside the H&Ms of the world, and really want to see it continue.”

It would be terrible to see haute couture go. It’s such an important part of fashion – it shows the real creativity of the designers.

Even though these dresses can’t be worn to most occasions, they’re not meant to be – that’s what makes them so special.

This poster is from a painting I did of Nico from the Velvet Underground. The painting was based on a photo by Billy Name who worked with Warhol in the Factory. For anyone who does not know, Warhol managed the Velvet Underground, got them their record deal, and designed their first record cover with the banana (which could originally be peeled). Warhol also suggested that Nico, a german fashion model and singer, be in the group. I love her vocals on songs like “Femme Fatale” and “I’ll be Your Mirror”, but apparently Lou Reed did not like her much and kicked her out of the group.  She kept recording and made solo records until the early 80’s.  Iggy Pop had some vague sexual encounters with Nico in the late 60’s, and John Cale from the Velvet Underground produced the first (Iggy and the)Stooges album. Considering I got into Warhol, VU, and The Stooges separately, it is fascinating how connected they are.  Billy Name gets some of the money on this Nico poster.

If you don’t know who Mr.Brainwash is, you really must go watch the documentary Exit Through the Giftshop and recognize. The man is the definition of the artist entrepreneur and the idea that he might be teaming up with Lolo is super exciting.

Can’t wait to see what progresses, but expect a merger between fashion & art of Gaga level.

Chris Acheson is a hyperrealistic artist that has taken a bit of time to focus on two of my favorite subjects; chicks in knickers and window displays. The Manchesterarian has a mutant like ability to make his paintings look like photos, a talent which has garnered him worldwide praise. Check out some of his phenominal work after and look closely, these are all oil on canvas works of art. 

LINKAGE: Chris Acheson Painting

Chanel has just paid a steep price of $400,000 to The Central Park Conservatory, in exchange to take over our lives. Beginning October 20th, Chanel will have their own building in Central Park, to showcase contemporary art inspired by… Chanel. As much as we all love Lagerfeld, a huge building in the park, to glorify the classic line, is not necessary.

Art exhibits in the park are interesting but risky. Remember Christo’s orange gates throughout the park? It was wack, and a waste of money. Coincidently, this is also a waste of money, and predictably disappointing. While it may be inspiring and provocative, it will only cater to a very small appreciative audience. The dog walkers and cyclers will be infuriated. As for buildings, in the park, Tavern on the Green is all we need.

Candy is an artist, graphic designer, urban planner, and musician (she might also be a bit of a know it all) who has dedicated herself to changing New York City through “questionable” pieces. With a background in architecture and design, she likes to make city issues more accessible and engaging through her work, which encompasses the creative use of public space. She is a big fan of cross-disciplinary ideas and her art is concept-based in various mediums.

Since pedestrians in the city often find themselves walking in deep thought, a routine trip can prompt reflections on everything from future goals to last night’s dinner conversation. As people sacrifice personal time for hectic schedules, these casual occasions for reflection become all the more important. Sidewalk Psychiatry encourages self-evaluation in transit by posing critical questions on the pavement. Now your daily ponderings and emotional problems can be prodded and treated on the go – and, best of all, it’s free of charge! 

Project Moustache was developed for the average American who is exposed to over 3,000 ads everyday and is sick of these images infringing on public spaces. It is a statement about the right to walk outside without being informed about the latest alcoholic beverage, fruity shampoo, or Hollywood movie. And many citizens have responded to advertising posters with the gusto of grade-school disobedience. Their weapon: the pen. Their mark: the scribbled moustache.  While this project seems aimed affecting the integrity of the advertisement, some feel that they actually enhance them, drawing more eyes to the ads, sort of like the way a Yosemite Sam stache draws attention to certain Billieburg hipsters. 

Chinatown is a land of good food, colorful shops, and fresh produce. It is also a land of about three trees in a ten-block radius. The Great Chinatown Tree-Planting Movement was developed to state to the city that more trees need to be planted. And thanks to the progressive ideas of PlaNYC, the City makes it easy for residents to get involved in tree-planting good times through the new MillionTreesNYC program. Shooting for one million new trees in the next decade, the program gives hope to the leafless sidewalks of Chinatown that yearn to be charmingly lined with more than garbage bags, or black bushes, as we so kindly call them.
