Prada Takes a Powder

Miuccia Prada has a tale to tell. Or rather a few tales. “The Women’s Tales” is a series of shorts by female filmmakers featuring clothing and accessories by Miu Miu. Its first film, The Powder Room, was directed by Zoe Cassavetes and stars French model-actress Audrey Marnay with catwalkers Caroline de Maigret, Line Gost, and Sophie Vlaming as they take some time to freshen up in their Spring/Summer 2011.

Cassavetes’ love the of the private ritual that takes place among women provided the inspiration for the film:

“I love the sense of intimacy. It’s a place away from men, where you can check out other women, and re-glamorize yourself ready to face the world again.”

I guess men don’t really have that sort of intimacy in the bathroom…at least not the kind that doesn’t end in a scandal and public resignation.

appreciating Richard Avedon

Christie’s Paris and The Richard Avedon Foundation are going to be auctioning off 60 of the photographer’s works on
November 20th. This is going to be the largest grouping of Avedon’s
works to come to market. The auction will endow philanthropy supporting
photography.

The masterpiece of the auction is the enormous “Dovima With Elephants”
(1955), which hung in Avedon’s studio for 30 years. The iconic shot is
expected to fetch a half-million of the group’s $4 million to $6
million estimate. There will also be famous images of Verushka, Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton.

There is hope for those who can’t make it to Paris…The Museum of Fine Arts Boston
is running “Avedon Fashion: 1944-2000” (through Jan. 17), the first
retrospective focused solely on his fashion work since 1978. Being that
he was a portraitist, his photos are rarely about the clothes. A 1967
portrait of Audrey Hepburn in a black headdress elongates her neck, à
la E.T. In 1998, he shot Carmen Kass and Audrey Marnay unrecognizably swathed in wool by Hussein Chalayan.

Later in his career, Avedon created his extensive New Yorker portfolios and the Versace campaigns. A 1993 image features a nude Marcus Schenkenberg in the role of an abducting Greek god, tugging the hand of reluctant mortal Stephanie Seymour.

Whenever there is an opportunity to appreciate Richard Avedon’s amazing work, it is worth it. I just wish I
had $500,000 to spend on one of his pieces…at least there are books and
exhibitions for now…

Blowing the Cover: Lula Issue #7 & Purple Mag

Lula magazine is one of the best mag’s out there right now. Yes, better than American Vogue and well worth the $15 price tag. It was started by stylist Leith Clark in 2006 and cultivates a ‘wood-nymph, lo-fi, soft focus aesthetic. They produce two issues a year. And for their 7th issue they are celebrating with two covers.

Another current magazine well worth the $15 dollar price tag is Purple Magazine. Created by Oliver Zahm, the magazine features everybody who is cool in fashion. Frequent contributers include Terry Richardson, Richard Prince, and Mario Sorrenti. There’s one thing you can always expect from Purple Magazine and that is nudity. Almost every cover features somebody naked. And for this cover it’s photographer and one-time model Mario Sorrenti, with his man bits being covered by ex-girlfriend Kate Moss.
