Fashion is a trip. But some fashion is trippier than others. It’s those distinct looks in a collection that make your eyes pop a little wider as they expand your consciousness to accept grander philosophies of the universe. This season was rife with designers experimenting with wild menswear, and we’re glad to see the rougher sex getting freaky with the Avant Garde.

If you’ve ever been inside of Walter Van Bierendonck‘s Paris studio, you may be more equipped to make sense of his Fall 2012 collection titled “Lust Never Sleeps”. If you haven’t stood witness to his collection of banners with anime versions of himself riding on rainbows, mushrooms and male nether-regions, nor his future final resting grounds of a cartoon sarcophagus and his ode to all the boys, drugs and fashion a.k.a. things he loves, this trompe-l’oeil culture clashing runway journey may blow your mind.

Milan Fashion Week has come to a close, and the indie designers have yet again caught our eye with their avant-garde looks that are building momentum in the fashion world. We can’t wait for these names to make it to the U.S., but then again, maybe it’s best we keep them as our little secrets.

Speaking of Blake Lively, what in holy Chanel is she wearing on the cover of Elle? Granted it’s Elle Belgique, but that’s no excuse – Belgium is practically the motherland of avant garde! Hello Margiela, Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, et all. And they’ve got her in Georgia May Jagger for Hudson jeans and a wife beater?? I’m disgusted.

Avant-garde fashion house Hamansutra is definitely an inspiration towards a bizarre and outrageous outfit that no body will be able to top and possibly a better version of Lady Gaga’s collection of scandalous outfits! Hamansutra is the definition of documenting the world into a garment. Haman the designer, a man on a different level of energy and passion for both his new creations and the streets of New York City really surprises you with the materials and effects. Although most of his collections aren’t categorized by season, to look through these collections you have a key to enter a great mind! Let’s just say you have to have a lot of confidence to rock these seductive pieces just right.

In March 2010, Jean Paul Gaultier will follow in the footsteps of Alexander McQueen and Anna Sui to design an affordable collection for Target. Gaultier’s inspiration behind the line, which will be available March 7th until April 11th, is “The American Woman.” Knowing the avant-garde nature of Gaultier’s designs, the collection will be more eccentric and conceptual than traditional American sportswear.
Unlike the other Target/ designer collaborations of times past, Gaultier’s collection with be much more limited in supply, only being sold in 250 stores across the country instead of the 600 that featured Sui’s line. Mark your calendars now!
