Just the other night, the women of the Women’s Tennis Association gathered for a pre-competition gala at The Roof Gardens in Kensington and the British Council of Fashion Designers rallied around of the tennis stars. These ladies may look smokin’ in tiny pleated skirts and poly/elastane tanks, but they clean up nice when powered by a council of designers. At least most of them do… See which one aced it, and which ones baselined. <span

I’ve actually been sitting on an exercise ball all day in attempts to transform my stomach into abs of steel as I sit and blog all the day long. Now, most of you sit in the same position as I do, that is, in front of a computer, doing our various tasks that make the world go round. If your office space allows, bring in an exercise ball to make the world going round your tummy disappear. Here’s how:

POSTURE for an Active Sit: Feet flat on the floor. Sit tall as you can. Straighten your back. Puff out your chest. Pull in your chin slightly. Push your shoulders down. Move your shoulder blades close together. For an extra squeeze, put your feet together.

The active sit will engage your body into working the muscles. This can be done in any seat, but the effect is enhanced on the ball when your balance is tested.

ROLLING the Active Sit: While you’re still actively sitting, slowly move the ball forward and backward, or side to side, or in circles with just your hips.

This works your muscles as the abs must work double time to keep the balance.

LEG LIFTS under the table: Lift one foot off the ground slightly and hold out your arms for balance.

This takes all of those muscles you’ve been working on with your active sit and throws them into a frenzy. That is once you’ve done 5 reps of 15 seconds on each side.

TIPS:

Ball Size – your legs should be bent at a 90 degree angle, so get a ball that fits you accordingly.

Stability – if your balance isn’t quite there yet, you could get a ball stand. Or they make ball chairs specifically for this purpose.

Well eeeek. I’ve just come across some research that says you shouldn’t sit at a ball all day. I do hope my back will have survived this day. So don’t throw away your plain Jane chair just yet. Switch off throughout the day, and keep the active sit active.

Sensitive Skin Secrets from the Spa

BEAUTY

CITY

GIRLS

Mens

$50 spa treatment

avene

balls

cetaphil

Chelsea Piers

colloidal mask

dermalogica

facial

fitness

high frequency facial

spa week

the spa at chelsea piers
<guid

But I went there for, of all things, a facial. The aesthetician at The Spa at Chelsea Piers, Sasha Beloussova informed me that I actually have sensitive skin – who knew? I always thought it was tough as nails! Well, Sasha treated it accordingly in a 50-minute customized facial. It was luxurious and she was wonderfully thorough, and she gave me great advice on how to care for my delicate visage.

Bonus! You can get this $120 treatment for $50 during Spa Week, April 11-17th!!

Sasha’s recommendations for treating Sensitive Skin:

- #1 recommendation: Cetaphil. Or try Avené – a French brand sold at drugstores. No need to buy expensive products, as long as it’s labeled for sensitive skin.

- Moisturize every day, especially at night.

- Use room temperature water to cleanse – not hot or cold.

- Don’t exfoliate everyday. Twice per week is ideal.

- CLEAN YOUR CELL PHONE! It’s a touch screen. It gets gross. Wipe it clean to prevent cheek breakouts.

Ideal Sensitive Skin Facial:

With a series of gentle Dermalogica products, she started with Ultra Calming Serum Cleanse, and followed with professional Colloidal Masks, one of which was made from oatmeal. She used a High Frequency Facial machine, which emits a low level of electrical current that stimulates blood flow and thus rejuvenates. In betwixt the masks and massages and cleanses, Sasha began the painstaking process of extraction. As a picker myself, it was a relief to finally have a professional squeezing spots I didn’t even know needed to be squeezed. She. Got. Everything.

It was part ultra relaxing, part mildly painful, but totally cleansing.

**** I want to take this moment to remind you – if you’re planning on going to an important social event, get your facial at least a week ahead of time! You never know how your face will react. Mine did indeed get a little spotty and red afterward, but now it’s smoother than ever.

More about Chelsea Piers:

<a
