Metallics are absolutely everywhere this season. From shoes to scarves and everything in between fashion has come over very futuristic. Shimmering silvers and golds, sequins and embellishment take your dress from drab to fab. Ramp it up even further with a bodycon dress; this will definitely get you noticed.

How to wear? 

Styling details to keep you on point can include one-shoulder straps, studding and embellishment as well as bust cups and contrasting metallic belts.  Keep the metallic trend going in your shoes and jewellery. Give the look a bit of an eighties vibe with wrist cuffs, black and gold envelope style clutch bags and chandelier earrings.

Lacy LBDs

The little black dress never fails to impress, but this season you need to spruce it up a little if you want to compete with all those shimmering metallic-clad ladies. The only way to do that this season is with lace, and plenty of it. Whether bodycon, shift, a-line or skater, lace adds a sultry, sexy touch to an otherwise average black dress.

How to wear? 

Lace on the arms, around the neck or layered over the dress are the most fashionable ways to work lace into your outfit, but don’t be afraid to break the mould with lace hemlines and cut-out detailing. Work the grunge trend and go for black from head to toe with colour-matching accessories.

Bright, bold, asymmetric dresses

The colour block trend from the summer is reinvented with richer, autumnal hues such as burgundy, plum, mustard and emerald green.

How to wear? 

A favourite style for these eye-catching dresses is asymmetric hemlines accompanied by one-shoulder detailing. Corsages, Grecian-style drapes and pleats all add glamour and style and give a nod to the disco fashions of the 1970s. Accessorise in contrasting colours and keep jewellery, shoes and jackets larger than life.

Elle Fanning in D&G Spring 2011 – I want to adopt Elle as my own first born child -  she is so adorable. I love this floral romper with the floral wedges. Where else and on who can an overload of prints work this well?

Leighton Meester in Balmain Fall 2011 – Although she makes a lot of mistakes and does poorly in style school sometimes, I still stand by Leighton. She looks perfect in this bling-encrusted Balmain dress. I’m glad to see her at the top of the list for once.

Emma Stone in Bottega Veneta Fall 2011 – Congratulations Emma for finally making my best dressed list! She looks phenomenal with her red-again hair in this golden, lacy frock. The orange accessories are PERFECT.

Hailee Steinfeld in Louis Vuitton – Many think Hailee looks too old in this sequin-adorned Louis Vuitton suit, but I think she looks youthful and chic. Unfortunately, I hate the shirt she is wearing underneath and wish she would have chosen something brighter and not so stiff.

Lil Mama in Sherri Hill Fall 2011 – This little lady sometimes tries too hard and ends up looking completely ridiculous on the red carpet. But Lil Mama got it right this time in a perfectly-fitting strapless mini dress. She is put-together and sexy without looking ridiculous.

Emma Watson in Marchesa - I thought this look was a little safe for Emma, but it grew on me as I looked through all the red carpet photos from last night. It’s difficult to pull-off a stark white dress and even more so if it’s this short. This is a great feminine look with the added edge of the Brian Atwood pumps.

On to the MOST BORING looks of the night. The Cs of the red carpet, these ladies could have tried a lot harder.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 -  I usually LOVE animal print, so I’m surprised I’m not phased by this. But a short animal print dress with the half-up, half-down hair? Ehhh I need something more from a gorgeous gal like Rosie. It would have made a huge difference if the dress was left longer like it was shown on the runway.

Blake Lively in Michael Kors - If Blake was going to a sophisticated fashion event, this would be an A++. But for an MTV awards show? Where is the insane Chanel Couture that could be blowing all these tartlets out of the water? If you have the access, use it!

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen Pre-Fall 2011 – Snore. Snoring at the hair, the dress, the shoes. Snoring at you Reese Witherspoon, who has been doing so well and just had to go and disappoint when you were receiving the post “prestigious” MTV Movie Award possible.

Selena Gomez in Giambattista Valli Spring 2011 – Talk about looking too old. Fit for a grandmother, this ensemble is just too tedious for MTV. Selena wowed us at the Billboards and must be tired because she is not at work.

Here we are ladies and gentlemen, the WORST DRESSED of the MTV Movie Awards. These ladies receive Ds and Fs for their detestable fashion sense.

Jessica Szohr in Alice + Olivia Fall 2011 – AHHHH!! This is a paisley nightmare! Hide your kids, hide your wife because this is the scariest clown I’ve ever seen. Perfect example of how an awesome runway piece looks like shit in real life. Look at Jessica’s face, she’s as horrified as we are.

Kristen Stewart in Balmain - Someone finally managed to look like a hooker in Balmain. Kristen Stewart continues to neglect her fashion studies in this too short, terribly styled studded and safety pinned number. The hair is bad, the shoes are wrong and she is not working this dress the way it needs to be worked.

Mila Kunis in Balmain Fall 2011 – Poor Balmain, so much drama as of late. I am obsessed with this skirt, but what in god’s name was Mila wearing on top? It looks like she was half changed into her pajamas, someone rang the doorbell and she had to walk outside like this. Justin’s hands would be a more fashionable choice.

Amanda Bynes in Hervé Léger – Congratulations Amanda for winning the WORST DRESSED award by a landslide. Not only does this dress make her look saggy all around, but she chose the ugliest shoes Christian Louboutin has ever designed. Tan, turquoise, black, white – it’s a rainbow of disaster on the red carpet.

Ladies:

A bold shoulder - Women used to dress in power suits to emphasize their equality to men. Though the scales are still a bit uneven, bring out those shoulder pads to show the boys you’re not only as good, but better.

Ball-buster heels- There’s nothing better than a 5-inch stiletto to kick through that glass ceiling.

A pantsuit - Take a page out of Hilary Clinton‘s playbook and leave the skirts for the sluts in the intern pool.

An executive realness bag – Because you’re not fooling anyone with that Dior knock-off and you don’t need all that bag square-footage for a résumé and some business cards.

Jewelry, but to a minimum – A little zazz here, a little sass there never hurt anyone, but don’t OD on the beads and bobbles. This is an interview not a night out at da club.

Gentlemen:

A tailored suit – Any schlub can put on a suit.  But if you’re trying to run shit, you’ll need to make sure the suit fits the aspirations so take it to a tailor.

A briefcase – You ever seen those guys with suits and backpacks and think, oh, I want him running my company? Didn’t think so.

A pocket square - Aside from being a dashing accessory, that nifty bit of fabric in the breast pocket comes in handy when you don’t want them to see you sweat.

Wingtips – Your career will take off on the wings of your tips. But since it’s summer, pair them with a nude ankle — it’s less stuffy and you’re not a woman of  the 19th century so no one will be scandalized.

A watch - Not only do you need to be on time — or preferably 15 minutes early — for your interview, a nice timepiece instills confidence in everyone around you. “Oh, that guy knows what time it is!” Yes, yes you do.

Good luck, out there kids! And remember, if you’re going to go on an interview, make sure you go to werq.

To the office – There is nothing like a crisp, white shirt to show the world you’re in control. Pair it with a pencil skirt, power blazer and sexy heels to maximize its workplace potential.

The inspiration comes from both the royal men at the men and the Fall 2011 collection of the Alexander McQueen label.

This look is not that hard to achieve since military is a trend that is always somehow weaved into menswear. (Everyone love a man in uniform right?) As far as the outfit it is most a few key piece and perhaps a few props just to add a little pomp and circumstance.

Military styled jackets are usually in every designer’s mens coats but this Balmain double-breasted blazer is a great one and even come with its own emblem attached.A simple shoe is best when dealing with high-class affairs and Gucci does it right with this classic lace up.

Feel free to be a little costume-y when it comes down to accessories. Royalty has no problem wearing their traditional garments out and about even though to many they look a bit ridiculous. This is why you can buy a chauffeur’s hat and act like it was handed down to you for generation. And for the watch bling it’s all about Glam Rock.

- Karl Lagerfeld, contrary to popular belief, will not be involved in the creation of Paper Passion, a fragrance inspired by the smell of books as reflected in a badly-worded statement allegedly from his European PR  person. [Mimi Frou Frou]

- Red carpet favorite Marchesa is hopping into less formal territory with its one-off Playboy Bunny costume design for the new Playboy Club opening in London June 4th. Using the original iconic costume design, Georgina Chapman and co. added “Marchesa’s signature details, such as hand draping and embroidery.” I better not see a forty-foot train of tulle cascading from that bunny tail. - Anna Wintour parachuted into the J. Crew store on Fifth Ave to celebrate CFDA winner Billy Reid and the two designers who subsequently ate his dust, Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo.  All three designed capsule collections for the Crew; Reid’s seven piece collection is available online now through May with Gurung’s premiering in June and Borgo’s in July. - Someone somewhere told Elle UK that Balmain will be naming a new designer in the next few days, but that name will most likely be followed by a question mark. This source says: ‘They’re going to choose someone unknown. Christophe [Decarnin] was an unknown when he came to Balmain, and the owners want to support lesser-known design talent.’ Support and then drive them insane…allegedly. [Elle UK]

- Supermodel Doutzen Kroes is trading in her stilettoes for some Moon boots. The Dutch beauty has signed on to be part of Space Expedition Curacao, a sort of galactic travel agency where ordinary citizens — or at least supermodels  – can observe the Earth from space. - Noted news  publication Supermarket also-ran, Star Magazine is “reporting” that Kate Middleton’s wedding dress might have to be built for two. Following pressure to “produce an heir,”  Prince William and Kate may have started knocking the royal boots  before their stroll down the aisle. And if the mag is to be believed — which it clearly isn’t — the Queen Mum could care less since she all she wants is to hear the pitter-patter of little feet again…just as long as those little feet pitter and patter far away in some other part of Buckingham Palace.  [Jezebel]

- Vivienne Westwood is opening up her first flagship store in the states and she’s doing it in Los Angeles. - As if there weren’t enough fashion reality shows hosted by supermodels, now NBC has thrown their chapeau into the ring with Fashion Star, hosted by Elle Macpherson. But don’t expect high concept challenges requiring yards of tulle and a metric ton of beading; this show will focus on everyday items, “like bathing suits or lingerie, or surf wear and jeans.” And the winner gets a multi-million dollar contract and the chance to have their line sold at a “massive retail store.” I don’t know about you, but I’ve all but given up on PJ Runway (Lifetime? Original word had it that the designer has been in a mental hospital since January and was not coming back to Balmain. Well, turns out that is at least half true.

Turns out Decarnin was recently released from the loony bin after being treated for depression and stayed away from the show under doctor’s orders, a Balmain spokesperson tells WWD.

It almost feels like it’s a fashion Apocalypse! I have half a mind to start ransacking Barneys. There is, however,  a bright spot on the horizon…depending on how you define “bright spot.”

John Galliano’s namesake collection, previously thought to be cancelled, will instead be held as an informal presentation on Sunday, “consisting of 30 looks that were already completed.”

That’s bright, right…?

The film takes its name from the Antony and the Johnsons song that serves as the soundtrack and features animation by Bouwine Pool and illustrations by Jo Ratcliffe.

Inez explains that she and Vinoodh were “fascinated with the different realities going on in one shoot and so the music, the animation, Kate’s movements and the camera angle represent these layers of perception.”

Though this sadly won’t be a tribute episode to the Gloved One and we’ll have to sit through covers of the Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry and Lady Antebellum. I nearly fell asleep at the keyboard after writing that.

This episode will be Glee’s most expensive ever and probably one of the most expensive in television history. The storyline will focus on the local football championship and the Cheerios cheerleading regionals. I hope this means Sue Sylvester‘s doing Vincent Price’s rap then:

The foulest stench is in the air/ The funk of forty thousand years/ Or could I be mistaken/ Will Schuester’s hair?

And if that isn’t enough news to bejewel your cape,  there’s a tribute episode to Dame  Elton John in the works. Give me a little “Benny and the Jets” mixed with a little “Circle of Life” and I’ll be happy.

Not that Anne Hathaway isn’t totally working this now infamous gold Balmain number on Elle UK’s December cover. But, I mean…she’s got a wee bit of competition already…

Execs at Balmain are definitely rubbing their hands with glee–they’re pretty keen on this overexposure. As a label spokeswoman told the Daily Mail, “None of the magazines asked for cover exclusivity. The first cover came out in June so other magazines had seen it. No one has complained so there is no drama at all.”

Okay, no one complained. But if I worked at Elle UK and shelled out exorbitant prices (Balmain don’t come cheap) for a dress after six girls got their hands on it, I’d sure feel like an idiot right now.

This gold dress, originally worn by Anja Rubik in Balmain’s fall 2010 show, has landed six major covers–and it’s graced some more fabulous supermodel bodies. Claudia Schiffer dons it for Zeit‘s 40th anniversary issue, Natalia Vodianova gets her turn on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK for December, Cindy Crawford takes it to Vogue India October 2010…then Abbey Lee for German Vogue in August, Toni Garrn on Spanish Vogue‘s November cover, and it finally lands on Anna Dello Russo for the new fall issue of 10. (Not a model, but hey, she’s got the bod.)

Either we’ve got déjà vu, or this Balmain sparkler is theeee dress of choice for those blessed with supermodel height and a tiny waist. So which of these hot, skinny broads rocked it best?

The reason that Akira is such a killer nominee for this Friday feature is that it’s probably the most detailed animated film ever made.  It literally puts anything Disney has ever done to shame.  Factor in that the movie takes place on such a massive scale (a re-imagining of post-World War III Tokyo) that there’s a helluva lot of detail.

Based on Ôtomo’s as of then yet-unfinished manga (it just gets nerdier and nerdier, doesn’t it?) the film starts off extremely strong focusing on a group of teenage reprobates and secret military experiments but soon loses its way.  Fortunately for those of us who like looking at beautiful things, however, it never loses its style.  So, with that, on to the outfits!

As stated above: super-macro.  The outfit that pops out most is the man in the yellow chinos.  It’s getting towards the end of pastel season (i.e. Spring is being burned to death) but it’s always a good/super-preppy look when someone gets all Nantucket on their own ass with a basic blue oxford and some colored slacks.  Then there’s Mr. Punk I and Mr. Punk II to the left with looks reminiscent of the most recent Balmain men’s collection.  Leather jackets with a little bit of prep mixed in (a button down and olive green slouch neck sweater).  Who knew cartoons could dress so damn well?

But Ôtomo can go super-micro too.  If you want to look like a teenage derelict/leader of a futuristic bike gang, here’s how you do it, from head to toe.  Check the fit on all the items: slightly oversized polo to let the cool breeze in, cropped just-slim-enough chinos, killer mid-top white sneaks.

Second from the left, and the guy all the way towards the right.  Neither of these characters plays a major role in the film.  In fact, the rightmost character might not even have a line.  Nevertheless, both of these guys have got it going on.  Hello Joe Strummer, and hello sweet shearling collar overcoat.  We’ll refrain from commenting on the cutoff graphic tee on the left.

The girls get in on the action too, of course.  From left to right, some real-world finds.  Honestly, this movie’s like a schizophrenic sketchbook come to life mixed with a lot of Mad Max, Max’s Kansas City, and, uh…Max Fischer.  It’s totally max, basically.

Check the gallery and see if you can match the following with their pictures.  It’s like one of those quizzes on children’s placemats at roadside diners.  Or, you know, don’t.  Whatever you do, pick up Akira (or watch it on YouTube).  Enjoy all the pretty pictures, pretend to soak up the philosophy and the Kubrick-ian 2001-style ending.  When else can you say you’re-a-learnin’ while watchin’ car-toons?

The film follows Delon as Jef Costello, a loner and assassin who leaves you wondering why he’s alone.  For God’s sakes, he’s a snappy dresser with killer looks (pardon the pun).  Check him out in this ensemble:

Slim, perfectly-tailored suit with a skinny black tie with high-waisted trousers a la those recently revived by Thom Browne and featured in the most recent Vivienne Westwood show.  Hell, if Scott Sternberg wanted to, he could’ve just as easily named his line after this classic of French cinema.

Now, the film being a noir and also set in Paris, the environs are almost perpetually gloomy, leaving way for many shots of Delon and the other film’s denizens in trenchcoats.

Again, check the fit, the sharp lines, the silhouette.  This shot may be from over four decades ago, but it’s more Burberry Prorsum or Margiela than London Fog.  It’s an outfit and shot that would look comfortable in an editorial out of AnOther: Man.  That’s not something the original Casino Royale (also 1967) could say.

And let’s not forget about the leading lady, little known actress Cathy Rosier.  Check out girl’s get-ups while playing a little game of free association.

Mme. Rosier’s dress is evocative of the nudes, creams, and camels which were so heavily featured on the runways this past winter.  Similar items abound from designers as diverse as Opening Ceremony, Halston, and Lanvin.

And hello sequins.  Although it’s not the right season, it’s not difficult to imagine women watching Le Samouraï today dreaming of similar pieces that dominated retailers such as Topshop, French Connection, Balmain, and Alice + Olivia.

Lastly, let’s take a look at this totally boss leopard print coat which brings to mind one label and one label only: Dolce & Gabbana who have established a reputation for creating beautiful garments in a variety of animal prints, most notably leopard.

In summation, Melville’s film is as stylish cinematically as it is, well, stylistically, and that’s what makes this a perfect first entry for Film Friday.  If you haven’t seen it yet, NetFlix it ASAP.  Pretty people in pretty clothes doing underhanded things.

Balmain is attempting to get women to pay almost $2000 for a shirt you could make by taking a pair of scissors to a basic t-shirt. Here’s our letter to the genius’ at the fashion house.

Dear Balmain,

WHAT THE FUCK!!! Charging $1625 for a tee shirt that looks more like a dish rag than a piece of high fashion is SOOO NOT COOL!!! Come on now. I get it, you’re high fashion. I get it, your customers would pay for garbage like this. But get this, if I saw anyone walking down the street, wearing this version of a torn up tee shirt, rather than heading to American Apparel and tearing one up themselves, I’d be forced to rob the bitch.

Seriously.

Not lying.

I would rob the bitch.

I’d tear the shirt off, grab her purse and push her into a puddle and make a run for it. No one in the world needs a ripped up tee that costs more than the gross annual salary of a migrant worker, but bravo, cause I’m sure some idiots out there already bought this.
