Bishme Cromartie Fall 2010 Collection

I first introduced you to Bishme Cromartie, then an 18-year-old design genius hailing out of Baltimore, MD. At just 19, he's received critical acclaim from the Washington Times and local magazine that have been exposed to his work. Razors Edge magazine called him the Alexander McQueen of Baltimore for his chic collection of unconventional designs that many in Washington have coveted since his discovery. Bishme released his Fall 2010 collection and it's a very cohesive collection. Small as it may be, the teen is developing his craft and perfecting draping and sculpted looks that are so relevant right now. The muted colors of chocolates and greens are perfect to add all of fall's colorful accessories.

I am sneaking this little post while SSBF and our guests are preoccupied with the Guitar Hero version of Rock Band. Last night we did some typical Baltimore things.

We hit Federal Hill in downtown Baltimore for some beer and bar shuffleboard at Don’t Know? Tavern.

Followed by a Maryland Crab feast at Seaside Seafood in Glen Burnie.

On the agenda tonight.. A Phillies game, at the Nationals Stadium in DC.

O's game

Ahh baseball. SSBF and I are huge baseball fans. We are those people that want to visit all the baseball stadiums before we die. He is a Detroit Tiger's fan and I of course am an obnoxious Phillies fan. Living in Baltimore we've adopted the Orioles as our own. Well, SSBF actually started as an Orioles fan. We have plenty of paraphernalia to prove it (including a video from 1989 titled “Worst to Almost First”). I mainly feel sorry for the Orioles and like to cheer for them because hardly anyone else does. When the Yankee's and Red Sox are in town their fans generally out number the hometown crowd. It drives me crazy. I also love this stadium. I think just ascetically it's one of the best. It has such unique features like the warehouse that runs the length of it (background) and center field opening to the skyline. SSBF reminds me all the time how most modern parks in the last 15 years have been designed based off of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

So I told you guys yesterday I picked this hat up at Target. What I left out is that SSBF didn't want me to get it. He said he didn't like it and he didn't like ”hats on girls”. Silly boys (almost) never understand fashion. I ignored him of course. I love this hat. It was the perfect accessory and paired with this linen scarf, jewelry was basically unnecessary. It attracted a lot of attention though. Like an obscene amount. I guess I'm not surprised. Baltimore is hardly a fashion capital. I'm going to have to get used it, I can feel myself living in this hat for the remainder of the summer. Truth be told, I've wore it eveytime I left the house Saturday and Sunday, including a trip to the grocery store. Hehe.

A baseball game coupled with no homework to do (and a speedy sale of my textbook on half.com)….
I’d say it was a pretty good weekend.

Indie D.C.

I’m home in the D.C. area this week (code for “suburban Maryland”). Perusing the local websites and papers, I realize that nothing makes you more independent than being the only one doing something! D.C. has never been known for much of anything fashionable (except for Tim Gunn). The Washington Post’s fashion editor, Robin Givhan, works from NY, and the paper has hardly covered Fashion Week. Some of the better D.C.-based fashion blogs, Fashion is Spinach, and The President Wears Prada, have mentioned Fashion Week, albeit minimally; and hip culture sites Panda Head and Brightest Young Things haven’t touched on it at all. No one I know here is talking about Fashion Week; the morning news doesn’t touch on it; and this morning an old man in CVS stared at my knee-high gladiators like they needed an exorcism. The whole culture is obviously different.

I’m trying to figure out if D.C. doesn’t care or doesn’t need to care. You’re kind of trained to think that all the trends spring from the runway shows. Either Washington is totally clueless or has some secret other means to fashion. Georgetown has some decent boutiques (above), college kids love thrifting, and the outfits of Baltimore art students are usually on point. But I wonder what impact the isolation from the fashion world has on the locals. Are fledgling designers here more creative without direct influences? Do they still have the same influences (via blogs and magazines)? Are the local stylists all L.A. transplants?

The independently-run DC Fashion Week kicks off Sunday, and the Fashion Fights Poverty show is later this month. I’m curious to see the media coverage of the fairly new events. They’ve been gradually growing, but does D.C. care?
