Thomas Jefferson -- Founding Father Jungle Fever Scandal broke out in 1802 when James T. Callendar, a political journalist, wrote in a Richmond newspaper that then-President Thomas Jefferson had not only had an affair with his slave, Sally Hemings, but also fathered "several" of her children. While the rumors had been circulating for years prior, Callendar's article made it general knowledge. Jefferson's policy, setting the benchmark for all future sex scandals, "was to offer no public response to personal attacks." John F. Kennedy -- Some Like It Camelot By now everyone knows that John Fitzgerald Kennedy bedded anything with two legs and a pulse, but undoubtedly his most (in)famous liaison was with noted trainwreck, Marilyn Monroe. JFK and Marilyn spent a weekend in Palm Springs at Bing Crosby's in 1962, much to the chagrin of First Lady Jackie Kennedy. While it was just another conquest for the  lascivious world leader, Marilyn became obsessed with the pres -- of course by then she was already face-down in her pill addiction so that certainly didn't help matters. Monroe would memorably sing a breathless rendition of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" shortly after the tryst -- adding fuel to the fire of a rumored affair -- only to die of an overdose a month later. Abraham Lincoln -- Gaybraham Lincoln While he may be no vampire hunter, Honest Abe honestly didn't mind sticking his wood into his share of dudes -- allegedly. Rather, it's hard to pin the label of "homosexual" on Lincoln since the concept didn't really exist then, but rumors over the Great Emancipator's sexuality have persisted for some 150 years. From his romantic friendship with Joshua Speed to a bawdy poem about gay marriage and not to mention his bodyguard David Derickson sharing his bed when Mary Todd was away, there's enough evidence to build a case that Abraham Lincoln was at least a bit of a queer one. Bill Clinton -- Lewinskygate "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." The mantra of a generation. Sex became a very public topic of conversation across the nation -- particularly what constituted sex -- during the dark, Ken Starr-haunted days of the Clinton administration when William Jefferson Clinton became only the second president in the office's totally impeach-worthy history to actually be impeached. Andrew Johnson was the first in 1868. Clinton's affair with White House intern and noted homewrecker Monica Lewinsky became a legal matter once Bill was accused of perjury and obstruction of justice when he denied said sexual relations. He was inevitably acquitted and through it all Hillary Clinton had his back. Eleanor Roosevelt -- Ladies First for the First Lady Though she was not President, Eleanor Roosevelt had a large role in shaping the course of this country as First Lady. And just because her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was arguably the greatest President of the 20th century, he was known to have his fun on the side as well. Enter Lorena Hickock, a journalist with whom Eleanor formed a lifelong friendship in 1933. Their relationship is documented in a number of letters, several of a very intimate nature. Wintour and Vogue have reportedly been “instrumental” in coercing assembling the 22 designers, including Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Alexander Wang, Tracy Reese, Joseph Altuzarra, Rachel Roy, Narciso Rodriguez, Rag & Bone and Jason Wu. Wary of alienating Republican voters from their brands, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton initially nixed their labels from participating in Runway to Win, but Marc Jacobs — of which LVMH owns a majority stake — designed his T-shirt anyway, “following pressure from the magazine,” according to WWD.

On the other hand, Donna Karan, also owned by LVMH, did not bow to Wintour and is therefore not participating in the fundraising effort. And therefore won’t be seen in Vogue anytime soon…Kidding!…Not really.

Runway to Win’s e-commerce site, runwaytowin.com, officially launches on Thursday, but Wintour’s re-election campaign is not stopping there. She will also co-host an Obama fundraiser with actress Scarlett Johansson in February — which I’m taking as a sign that ScarJo will be on the cover around that time. See, kids, and you thought fashion and politics had nothing in common. They both require a steely nerve, a willingness to compromise and the ability to turn a blind eye to corruption. What exactly are the “proper measures”? That’s pretty vague wording and considering the measures the Vatican has taken in the past, clarity might be appreciated. But they didn’t mince words in their condemnation. “This shows a grave lack of respect for the Pope, an offence to the feelings of believers, a clear demonstration of how publicity can violate the basic rules of respect for people,” said the Vatican’s spokesman, a Father Federico Lombardi.

The White House has also responded to Benetton’s ads, but a bit more equivocally, as their spokesman said yesterday, “The White House has a long-standing policy disapproving of the use of the president’s name and likeness for commercial purposes.” So if President Obama was sucking face with Hu Jintao for artistic purposes, the White House couldn’t give less of a shit.

Benetton, for its part, retains that the ads were meant ” to combat the culture of hatred in all its forms.”  Nevertheless, the house pulled the image of the Pope going to Frenchy town with Imam al-Tayeb yesterday, apologizing for offending “the sentiments of the faithful.” However, no apologies have followed for offending the sentiments of Michelle Obama. Barack Obama shares a tender moment with China’s Hu Jintao and German chancellor Angela Merkel slips French president Nicholas Sarkozy a little tongue. Meanwhile, I wonder how Carla Bruni feels about this. Then of course, there’s the passionate embrace between Pope Benedict XVI and Egyptian Imam Mohamed Ahmed el-Tayeb that could easily ignite a holy war the likes of which haven’t been seen since the 2000 presidential elections. The event was originally scheduled for mid-July until President Obama was distracted by the debt ceiling crisis. This dinner sounds way more important, but to each his own I guess.

Michelle looks angelic in this flow-y and elegant Tom Ford dress. I absolutely love her accessories – the sparkling earrings and clutch are perfection against the First Lady’s ivory frock. I love that she wore gloves; I might have done them just a bit shorter. But she looks fantastic and can do no wrong in this gown.

The Suit: Everyone knows that the suit makes the man and that’s why the Don wouldn’t be caught dead not wearing one. There are many suits that a guy can wear that will carry the same presence. For the more conservative exec a plain black suit that fits well is always recommended and adding a pinstripe in your repertoire will have people appreciating you attention to detail. The Shirt: The same rules apply for the shirt as it did for the suit. You rarely see Donald on Celebrity Apprentice wearing a non solid color (or white for that matter) shirt. To make this look your own bust out this this mindset and go for your patterns. It’s always cool when you take your jacket off and there is a completely new look there. The Tie: When it comes to style I feel like if you walked into Trump Towers without a tie you would be fired immediately. The Trump man keeps it pretty simple with his neck wear. Horyn already expressed her approval of the gown, stating that it “recalled some of the opulent state dinners of the Reagan era” and trumpeted the gown’s approapriate level of “pomp”.  She also understands the subsequent fallout that has occurred, led by Oscar “The Grouch” de la Renta, over choosing a foreign designer for such an important occasion:

“His [de la Renta's] business is based in the garment district, and by using local factories for most of his production, he contributes to its prosperity. This is an important issue to him.”

She is less sympathetic, however, to the CFDA, whom she sees as being more than just a bit hypocritical in their condemnation and are simply trying to “goad” Mrs. O into wearing American designers:

“The truth is many of its members, including its president, Diane Von Furstenberg, manufacture a significant portion of their clothes outside the United States, mainly in Asia.”

But given the heated rhetoric over one gown chosen for one event over one week ago, Horyn thinks — and rightfully so —  that attention is being taken away from Mobama’s substantial accomplishments.

“I want her to be known for something other than her fashion. I want her to be a great first lady who truly cares about the lives of Americans at the time when many need help. I want her to be far more than “prime placement” for a dress label — whatever the country of origin. She supports a number of causes, notably healthful eating habits, but these deeds are being overshadowed by what she wears.”

Horyn goes on to cite an article in The Economist that expressed the hope “to hear more about what Mrs Obama thinks and a lot less about what she wears.”

That article, published during the first months of Barack Obama‘s administration, cited Michelle Obama’s impressive background  — she graduated cum laude from Princeton and earned her law degree from Harvard before embarking on a successful career in the public and private sector — and credited her hands-on approach during the 2008 election, traveling around the country giving “intelligent, substantive and well-delivered” speeches in support of her husband.

Ever since that election the White House, according to the article, has tamed down this image, trying “its best to turn the first lady into a celebrity mother-cum-clothes-horse,” in reaction to Hillary Clinton‘s  forthrightness during the first years of the Clinton administration.

“Hillary Clinton’s determination to act as a virtual co-president back in 1993 helped to create a backlash against her husband’s administration. It also raised uncomfortable questions about power and accountability. Given America’s continued neuroses about race, an outspoken black first lady might prove to be even more divisive than an outspoken white one.”

Not only would an “outspoken black first lady be divisive,” it would be downright alienating.  It’s true that Mrs. O has taken a back seat to her husband — his position practically calls for it — but that has not reduced her own merits. It’s really America’s perception of the Obamas and who Americans want them to be and want them to represent that has dictated this fanatic fascination with her sense of style.

At the onset of the Obama administration, there was an excitement that everything would be different, better. A sort of optimism that was frequently compared to John F. Kennedy‘s election some 50 years prior. And  with this new, black Camelot came — as The Economist put it — the “Jackiefication” of Michelle Obama.

Couple that with the fact that the Obamas were younger, more attractive and more accessible than any first family since the Kennedys and the American public couldn’t help but slip Michelle into Jackie Kennedy‘s iconic pillbox hat. It was all part of the optimism, but with this comparison we lost or forgot or chose to forget the Michelle Obama of the campaign trail; the passionate, articulate Ivy-league educated attorney who stood beside her husband rather than behind him.

It’s easy to forget that despite her flirtations with couture and high society, Jackie Kennedy was also a well-educated woman with her own opinions who later in life had a successful career as a book editor.  Hillary Clinton simply reinvented what a First Lady could do and hers is a large pantsuit to fill.

Horyn believes that the only person who can change the perception of Michelle Obama is Michelle Obama. But it’s all part of a great balancing act. After all, Michelle Obama represents so many things to so many people.  As an African American, she is an inspiration for all minorities; as a successful woman, she is an inspiration for other women; as first Lady of the United States, she is the face of America and a champion for civil causes; but at the end of the day she is a woman and like most women her clothes are an extension of her.

It’s impossible to please everyone, particularly when everyone has an opinion about what you say, where you go and what you wear. No doubt it would behoove the press to focus on the causes Mo champions, but let’s be real, that shit doesn’t sell. And if there’s one thing Americans respond to it’s celebrity culture. There are no bigger celebrities in the world than the Obamas and like all celebrities, we as a culture love to build them up and tear them down, only to build them up back again.

This dress controversy will blow over, but how will history remember Michelle Obama? Will she be proactive like Hilary? A style icon like Jackie? A lush like Betty? Sure Mo has a hand in her legacy, but America will remember what it chooses to remember. Thats the way history works. It’s written selectively by the winners, so for all her degrees and her speeches and her social work, will she only be remembered for a few great dresses?

We’ll have to wait to see how the rest of her husband’s presidency goes before we can even begin to answer that.

Barack Obama and his first lady, M’Obama, made a diplomatic trip to India where they danced with some students. Mrs. Obama’s moves garnered her widespread acclaim and compliments. “Dancing Queen Rocks India” read the Times of India.

That doesn’t surprise me. When M’Obama and I used to go clubbing in 19-none-of-your-goddamn-business, we would step onto the dancefloor in our matching J. Crew sweater sets, belted naturally, and the crowd would part like the red sea. When the beat dropped, Michelle would immediately find the nearest pole and break out into a spread eagle.

Those kitten heels were made for dancing.

Artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey, famous for his Barack Obama “HOPE” propaganda poster, celebrated his career retrospective last night at Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. The artist plans to team up with Levi’s to create customized propaganda jeans this May!

The Obaminator has been gracing the cover of mags for some time, but now Annie Leibovitz (active supporter of King Kong blacks and putting non-whites on the inside flap of Vanity Fair) gets her chance to shoot some iconic “That’s My President” imagery. The cover isn’t anything special but the shot of him and Michelle walking down Washington is pretty CNN worthy if you ask me.

Gizmodo is reporting that Barack Obama may have worn a bullet-proof suit during his little parade on Tuesday. Not just a vest, but the whole suit!

I can’t find any official confirmation, but it makes sense.

The rumor mills are saying that Obama may have sported a design by Miguel Caballero, a Colombian bulletproof apparel line. Called “the Armani of bulletproof apparel,” Caballero’s “high security fashion” finds loyal customers in ”Presidents, State Leaders, Dignitaries, Top Executives, Businessmen, Diplomats, and those who demand maximum discretion, comfort, and flexibility.”  And the suits are lightweight!

That’ll keep your inaugural balls safe!

I live 5 miles outside of D.C. I am not interested in seeing how quickly the Porta Potties freeze over or touching strangers with my nice coat.

But I can spot Michelle Obama leaving St. John’s Church on the TV and run to the Internet and find an image of it!

Washington is actually clear of wintery weather, and the Obamas are mostly hanging out inside what I’m sure is a heated limo. So luckily Michelle’s not all bundled up. (I wonder if Barack is wearing long underwear?)

She’s wearing a yellow-gold brocade Isabel Toledo skirtsuit with an interesting choice of green Jimmy Choo pumps and green J. Crew gloves.

Toledo is a Cuban-born, New York-based designer that has been a favorite of both Mrs. Obama and her style fans.

No doubt this is only the first of a couple outfits she will wear today!

I live about 5 miles outside of D.C. They started closing and detouring streets weeks ago. Everyone I know in the city is excited for the Inauguration, but wants out for the four-day weekend. And everyone else is trying to make a buck off Obama’s likeness. I don’t know if this is just a D.C.-area thing, but even our chain grocery stores each have an aisle of Obama merchandise snuggled next to the Valentine’s Day stuff.

A more organized effort to sell Obama stuff and support the campaign has been released, though. A collaboration with the Presidential Inaugural Committee, the Runway for Change Inaugural Collection features T-shirts and accessories from mainstream design houses like Tory Burch, Vera Wang, and Isaac Mizrahi; indie designers like Alexander Wang, Lutz & Patmos; and even celebrity designers like Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Several of the products are made from organic cotton and/or dyes, and proceeds from collection will go toward the $45 million projected cost of the inauguration ceremony.

If you’re in the District, you can nab some piece at the temporary Presidential Inaugural Store, at 625 E Street NW, or from the online store.

Mr. Blackwell died in October, but political consultant Roger Stone has taken it upon himself to continue the Best Dressed and Worst Dressed tradition.

Who?  I know, I don’t know.  

I guess he’s something of an icon for the Republican party, but apparently quite the fashion plate as well.

The New York Times has taken notice of Stone for his “flamboyant personal style” and “sartorial elegance.”

I’m not sure if Stone would have Blackwell’s blessing on this.  But I have just read a little biographical info on this guy, and I am now fascinated with his Nixon tattoo and perennial suspenders. 

So on his website, The STONEzone, Stone has published his “official list of the best and worst dressed men and women of 2008.”

He also apologizes to American women for popular men’s fashions and notes that “lobbyists are the only elegant men left in America.”

His best-dressed men include Barack Obama, Jay-Z, Al Sharpton, Calvin Klein, and Eliot Spitzer. Best-dressed women include Carla Bruni, Rihanna, Fran Leibowitz, Victoria Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Sophia Loren, Penelope Cruz, and Sarah Palin.

Worst-dressed people include Simon Cowell, Justin Timberlake, Ashton Kutcher, Johnny Knoxville, Peter Wentz (yes, he calls him Peter), Madonna, Gloria Steinem and Christiane Amanpour.

NOTE to celebrities: You can’t treat the inauguration like a Hollywood party.

While Halle Berry and Sharon Stone each shelled out $50,000 for President-elect Barack Obama’s swearing-in celebration, there are some cheaper celebrities who want to get in on name alone. “It’s hilarious,” said one insider. “Sean Combs is trying to get four tickets to the inauguration. He’s acting like it’s a party at Bungalow 8, like they should just let him in. He’s too cheap to pay and thinks he can just show up.”

Cathy Horyn, fashion journalist and critic for The New York Times, hit the nail on the head when it comes to pinpointing reasons for Vogue’s failure: Editors don’t understand the digital age our world is now living in, the magazine itself hasn’t seen any sort of change in far too long, Vogue features the same old celebrities and the same old models and they fail to give mention to the socialites. 

I know times are hard, but Vogue has simply got to roll with them. Readers want to see fresh ideas and new faces. We want to live vicariously through socialites whose immaculate lives entertain us. We want to stay awake past page 5 for once. It might take a few attempts, but if Vogue is willing to change, I bet 99% of readers are willing to support them.

I bet these sell out before 2009.

The soon to be President took a page out of Lindsay Lohan’s book and left the house without his man bra the other day, and it looks to me like he’s got similar sag to that of Betty White from the Golden Girls. President Elect Obama is geting ready to take office, and the hype about who’s designs he is going to wear on inaguarion day are already swirling. Anna Wintour is out, Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue is in!!!

It’s as if The Devil Wears Prada was some self-fulfilling prophecy, we just got the second greatest news of the year, aside from Barack Obama’s nomination.

Carine is a complete sweetheart (got to meet with her at the Gucci/Madonna party), a fashion icon, and a better dictator than Anna Wintour. Expect scales and all black Yohji Yamamoto to hit the offices of American Vogue pronto.

This is a bit of speculation, but it’s also some of the best news we’ve heard all year. Joysies.

Four years ago, I watched as my Midwestern, swing-state Ohio fucked up once again and bled Republican red. ” All of the good states are blue,” I said. The time couldn’t come soon enough for me to get the hell out of here. But today, I am proud, for one of the few times in my life, to be an Ohioan. In a downtown bar Tuesday night that was more packed than a Saturday evening, a hundred Obama supporters wrapped in American flags, covered in buttons and stickers or simply wearing red, white and blue clothing let out roaring cheers as our fair state turned blue on the map. I haven’t been this happy, proud or enthusiastic about living in this country for a really long time. I will be wearing blue for the rest of the week in honor of American people seeking change, but most importantly, Ohioan!

Here is my attitude: I think people passing a law against people wearing sagging pants is a waste of time. We should be focused on creating jobs, improving our schools, health care, dealing with the war in Iraq, and anybody, any public official, that is worrying about sagging pants probably needs to spend some time focusing on real problems out there. Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What’s wrong with that? Come on. There are some issues that we face, that you don’t have to pass a law, but that doesn’t mean folks can’t have some sense and some respect for other people and, you know, some people might not want to see your underwear — I’m one of them.

The anti-McCain ads are heating up, this time with the help of Gossip Girl’s stars Penn Badgley and Blake Lively. Basically, they want you to talk to your parents about McCain, warning them about the dangers of voting for Senior Old Balls.

Seriously though, if Blake is willing to pick me up next time I think about voting for McCain, I might have to consider doing it more often.
