Mary Alice Stephenson wears a lot of hats!  Her Facebook followers are in the five figures, she is a media go-to for her red carpet commentating and heart-filled fashion segments, a world renown stylist who has styled for icons such as Avedon, Hiro, Demarchelier, Lindbergh and Richardson as well as serving as a brand ambassador and spokesperson for many Fortune 500 brands.   Oh, and we can’t forget to mention how cool it is that she and Barbie are talking fashion in her “dream” closet for BarbieWow.com next week, while still making time to be the national fashion ambassador for the Make a Wish Foundation.  She gives her time and love for fashion to many charitable organizations all while being a single mom.  She’s our new hero and we think soon to be yours, too!

As a fashion consultant, you get to do something different every day- which days are you favorite?

Every day is different and I love it that way!  It’s such a mix — from red carpet commentating to consulting behind the scenes for Fortune 500 companies, to creative directing, to styling editorial shoots with top photographers. Each week it’s high fashion to mass fashion, it keeps me happy to be in both worlds!  I can reach so many real women all over the world via social media, my followers love that they can get a look into the real world of fashion and learn how they can apply that glamour to their lives in a realistic way.  One day I’m shooting for a European Vogue, doing a fashion segment for the Nate Berkus show or styling a supermodel for Estee Lauder and the next day I could be helping real women get their glam on in a mall in middle America!

Who are young designers that we should be looking to for the future of fashion?

I just had lunch with the talented designers of Cushnie et Ochs, I try to support as many up and coming designers as possible.  I know how tough this business can be and how much support they need to make it.   I love Flora and Alexa from Ohne Titel, Juan Carlos Obando, Joseph Altruzara, Christian Cota, Suno, Frank Tell….  There is so much talent out there right now.  I try to shoot their clothes, or get them on the red carpet as well as talk about their clothes in the media to help get their point of view out to mass America.  The American public needs to know there are more options than just the big brands that can afford to advertise.  It’s still a struggle, for example, there were a wide range of luxury brands seen on the Golden Globe red carpet but where were Erdem, Prabal Gurung, Thakoon, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler?  I was happy to see Givenchy, Nina Ricci and Jason Wu, though —  so that is some progress!

- PETA strikes again. The most annoying people in the world have now taken issue with Oscar de la Renta’s Beats by Dre headphones, imploring beatsmith Dr. Dre to use his “tremendous amount of influence on young people…to advocate kindness toward animals by pledging never to design with real fur and exotic skins.” The good doctor, unsurprisingly, has not responded. - In the age of viral this and social media that, why let something as petty as death interfere with your internet life? Now you don’t have to, thanks to a new app that ensures your last words will be disseminated to all your Facebook friends, in the event of your untimely passing. Nina Garcia, Tinsley Mortimer, Derek Warburton, Charlotte Ronson, Chris Benz and CNN“s Alina Cho were among the well-appointed attendees, while liquor sponsor Domaine de Canton kept the ballers well lubricated with a host of refreshing cocktails. Bill Cunningham donned his best — and in all likeliness, only — tuxedo to capture the scene, including the 20th Annual Holiday Train Show. Calling it a”Train Show” is a bit of an understatement since the Garden’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory was turned into a miniature train town, featuring the most stunning scaled-to-size architecture I’ve seen since Barbie‘s Dream Italian Villa.

Besides an excuse to dress up and be fabulous, the Wonderland Ball also supports the Garden’s world-renowned Children’s Education programs, allowing children of all ages, particularly underserved children in the Bronx, an opportunity to learn about nature in engaging ways through workshops and hands-on activities. While it may sound like a very serious and somber affair, the night was a blast, particularly after the DJ took to the turntables. There’s nothing quite like seeing a stately woman in a feathered gown shaking her tail-feather to LMFAO.

-  Models Agyness Deyn and David Gandy and designer Henry Holland ran the London Marathon on Sunday. Holland shut it down with a time of 3h 28m — maybe his running gear had something to do with it. - Even Steven Shia LeBouf was handcuffed after getting into a bar fight in L.A. The fight erupted after some guy called the Transformers star a “f*gg*t,” but when Shia lunged at him he got ka-powed in the face and suffered a split lip. That’s not nice at all! The collection will be suitably supersized, featuring comically large  lipglosses ($19.95), blushes  ($24) and purse mirrors ($20).  James Gager, senior vice president and creative director of MAC Worldwide explains:

“Since Wonder Woman has this amazing strength, we decided that the products in the collection should be larger than anything we do; from the size of the compacts to the jumbo blush.”

Gager, however, does not seem to be fully aware of Wonder Woman’s abilities, claiming she ”uses the power of makeup to eliminate dullness and make women beautiful.”

I assume she uses those bullet-deflecting bracelets to check if she has any lipstick on her teeth.

That lipstick, by the bye, will be in Russian Red, a matte cherry color that was Madonna’s blonde ambition in the early 90s.

Wonder Woman apparently likes her eye shadow in white, pink, silver, forest green, olive-bronze and a frosty lime. Mascaras will come in black as well as shades of purple, green and blue to dazzle any evildoers. Even better, the glamazon can match her nail polish to her costume with a choice of bright red or navy blue.

Gager expects the Wonder Woman line to be more popular than MAC’s Hello Kitty and Barbie collaborations, predicting it will sell out in the first 2 weeks of its 6 week availability.

You can golden lasso one of those super compacts at MAC’s special pop-up at 109 Prince St in Manhattan on February 3rd. The store will be open thru mid-April when it become a new MAC store.

What made you want to start designing?
I never thought I would pursue a career in fashion. I originally did not have formal and technical training, I didn’t go to FIT. I went to school for fine arts, so I always assumed I’d do something in that realm but didn’t know what that would be. But then I started making my own clothing and got some really great feedback. My pieces developed quick notoriety because of their eccentricity and experimental appeal. It led me to start branding the label and making custom dresses. I realized my passion and that creating clothing was my art. It is what I wanted to do, but I did not want to work traditionally and looked at clothing as wearable art. Although I taught myself about the fashion industry as a business, as far as being a designer, I am first and foremost an artist before anything else – an artist with a fashion business.

You started out reworking vintage clothing? Do you still take a lot of inspiration from vintage fashion for your line? Is the line still costumesque?

From what was once an ‘inspiration collection’ of crazy altered vintage clothing, a handful of these pieces were later reworked to create a RTW collection which is consistent with my conceptual ideas yet is more universally wearable. It creates an attainable outlet for girls to dress up in their everyday lives that I thought the fashion world was lacking. I am inspired by vintage but now use new fabrics that are re-orderable.

In your bio, it says you pay a lot of attention to the “magic of childhood dress up.” Were you a super girly girl as a child or did you have some tomboy in you? Did you play with Barbies?

I did have Barbies, I loved them, but I wasn’t super girly. I always went against the grain. All of my girlfriends loved pink but I loved purple. But I like pink now and feel it can be extra cute and feminine, but in my collection, there are dark details too. I think it’s more about dress-up and reconnecting to the characters which inspire the dresses and the idea of adding fun to the wardrobe in everyday life. I love your housewife dresses! When you design your collections, do you keep specific people, like the housewife, in mind or are they imaginary, inspirational characters?

The housewife dress is just a satirical piece created for runway.  These dresses are kind of poking at society’s idealistic housewife since they are really short & sexy.

What are some of your other styles?

The Lolli Cupcake dresses are the brand’s trademark. They’re girlie, fun and cute, which all describe the line. We call the feathered dresses “Fairy Dresses.” The psychedelic pieces are 60s mod styles and the “Doll” pieces often have a lot of lace and embellishments.

Lolli Popitt is for “daring who like to stand out in a crowd.” Could you walk me through the ideal day-in-the-life of a Lolli girl? What does she do? Who does she meet?

If wearing one of our couture pieces, a Lolli girl should probably by prepared to meet and talk to anyone because she is bound to get attention. These dresses are conversation pieces, so she must be daring to wear them. But when wearing our RTW pieces, a perfect Lolli candidate is confident and just wants to have fun with her wardrobe.

When I wear the crazier stuff, I think I kind of become a performance artist. I think the clothes can bring out a personality that you may not have known you had.

So, you don’t always have to be a fashion risk-taker to wear Lolli Popitt? Does the Lolli Girl ever dress down?

Although the line is risky and avant-garde, that is not our entire collection. The line IS wearable. The really crazy stuff is just an over-the-top and accentuated take on our conceptual ideas. But the garments are wearable. They can also be worn every day without the commitment to that non-stop attention that our couture yields.

I noticed a lot of your designs feature inner-wear as outer-wear – corsets, bras, bustiers. What inspired you to focus on this trend for Lolli Popitt?

The feathered bras are technically lingerie, but you can wear them out. You can wear them alone with jeans or a skirt, but I think they look best accompanying something. They are fancy and functional. They can be worn underneath a button down (revealing the feathers) as well as over a slip with a skirt to make them fancier. Musicians have worn them to red carpet events and in their music videos.

The lace lingerie shorts were originally created to go under the dresses that we put down the runway, but we then realized that they compliment the clothing really well.

Where do you find inspiration? Who are your style icons? What other designers and artists do you look up to?

I was inspired by performance artists like Leigh Bowery, who literally was his art. He dressed-up eccentrically every day for all to see. Joanna Frueh, an artist/writer who studied the correlation between femininity, sexuality and  beauty in everyday life. Twiggy’s signature dresses have inspired my psychedelic pieces.

Recently, I have been dressing musician, Neon Hitch, an incredibly unique performer whose daring and organic style embodies the ideals of both of my lines, especially the Crystal Knuckles jewelry.

My aunt, Carole Feuerman, a well-known photo-realist sculptor, is one of my biggest idols. Learning from her has helped me see how I could create a foundation to turn art into a business.

Your Crystal Knuckles jewelry line looks amazing. How did you get started designing jewelry and what is the inspiration behind the pieces?

I’ve always collected crystals. My aunt would give me a crystal whenever I saw her while growing up. My initial collection was started using those stones, the ones that I had from my aunt. I owned several over-sized rings which I loved and thought that using natural crystals to create jewelry would be a really unique idea. In fact, in gemology you’re supposed to have a crystal on you at all times because they are said to bring healing and protective powers. The rings will be featured on Ideeli.com and we are currently in contact with Henri Bendel, Barney’s & Scoop NYC. I will keep you posted on what’s to come!

Speaking of Cher, I’m pretty sure EW used one of her old faces for her doll. It’s uncanny!

Here we have BaBa being interviewed by renowned 800-year-old curmudgeon, Larry Ken. I’m assuming they left a Ken doll out melting in the sun for a few days to get that wrinkled King face down.

Shunned by classmates for being an outsider and just a plain old weirdo, BaBa visits her old school for sister Skipper’s graduation and takes the opportunity to let her freak flag fly.

BaBa scalped a couple Bratz dolls to make this dress before performing live at the Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel.

To film her magnum opus, “Telephone”, BaBa recruited fellow superstar, BarBeyoncé.

Raised in a Catholic household, Barbie was more than willing to shed her inhibitions – and her clothes – to make a profound artistic statement. The statement being that she’s kind of a slut. Luckily, she’s anatomically as well as politically incorrect.

To make her snazzy glasses, BaBa sold her prison bitch, seen coyly in the background, for packs of cigs. And cigarettes don’t come cheap in the big house.

First they try and pawn off some Hot Wheels on me, and I’m like, “Bitch, please, you better give me that Barbie with my McNuggets.” Then when I get the Barbie it’s like 2 inches high and has the same tired princess costume like all the other ones I have. I can’t even put her cheap, stringy hair in a chignon!

Barbie, much like a lot of 50 year olds with money in the bank, has been going through a major make-over. She’s obviously had work done and is now attempting to hit the runway. Demi Moore called, Barbie, she wants her gimmick back.

Apparently, Barbie is all dolled up to celebrate the launch of her Little Black Dress collection and raise a little money for the CFDA scholarship program. She’ll be sporting a couple of exclusive accessories and fashion designs from Isaac Mizrahi, Kate Spade’s Deborah Lloyd, Tory Burch, Rachel Roy and Monica Botkier. The dolls hit eBay on January 28th.

Barbie is fine … art that is. She’s been posing for a number of artists and is now taking over works by Picasso, Da Vinci and more.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never quite gotten over Barbie, but Gaga Barbie is at a whole new level of coolness. Veik DIY-ed his Barbies and dressed them in some of Gaga’s most iconic ensembles – he even made a mini version of Mcqueen’s armadillos! In honor of the doll’s 50th birthday, Karl Lagerfeld is creating a Barbie & Ken exhibit exclusively for Colette.  From March 9-15, his photographs will be on display — and dolls available for viewing only on March 12.

February 15th, 2009 brought the first ever Barbie runway show to New York Fashion week as a tribute to the classic toy’s 50th anniversary.

The show brought fashion regulars, media reps, photogs, and reporters but it also brought Barbie lover’s from across the country. Former and current Barbie collectors milled together ranging in ages from the very young to the very young at heart.

Apparently the invitations mailed out by Barbie reps encouraged the invited to bring along their daughters and nieces to the event. While this concept is a nice sentiment perhaps they forgot the limitations of space that is so frequently and issue at Bryant Park. While it may be one thing to turn away hoards of twenty-somethings clamoring for standing room at the William Rast show, it is quite another to deny an optimistic 6 year old access to that hot pink runway. If I were one of the parents encouraged to bring along my little girl only to have the doors slammed in her face once she got their I would have been rip-roaring mad. Way to be a dream-crusher Barbie.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past fashion season, I’m sure you’re aware of Barbie sudden dominance of the world of cut & sew. The bitch is 50 and instead of fading away into menopausal bliss, she has decided to stage a comeback (my guess is she took a page from Madonna’s handbook, expect a young latin play thing any day now). 

As part of her attempt to remain relevant she’s staging a fashion show at Bryant Park this week and even has gotten hip to this Facebook all the kids are talking about. Of course, her Facebook features some weird as videos of celebrities who don’t really do much, except endorse Barbie. Something about Kevin Sorbo (the 90s Hercules) talking about torturing Barbie’s as a boy makes me concerned for what kind of message the plastic cougar is trying to get across. Maybe a S&M Barbie is right around the corner (hey, it worked for Madonna, right?).

New York won’t be the only city that sees the leggy blond on the runway. London Fashion Week designers Roksanda Ilincic and Danielle Scutt will get a visit from the model/nurse/astronaut/business woman/cowgirl.

Now, Jeremy Scott has announced that he plans to send a Barbie-inspired collection down the Paris Fashion Week runways this spring. (Scott’s line is set to debut March 12th at Colette, and will be available to Americans in the middle of February. The iconic plastic doll is also having an entire fashion show dedicated to her in New York, which Jeremy Scott is contributing to.) NYLON
