I’ve always been relatively impressed by the denim variety carried by Barneys New York, and further gaining my stamp of approval is the Barneys Fall 2009 denim catalogue. It’s been a little while since we’ve seen Cole Mohr or Ash Stymest work on anything of substance, let alone work on modeling gig together, but the boys are back in the Fall 2009 mailer and looking better than ever! Really folks, jeans are never going out of style, so if you’re in the market for some new denim, I’d say Barneys is the place to look!

Battling the recession with the newest addition to the Comme Des Garçons family is Black Comme des Garçons, a bridge line slated to hit New York and Paris, as well as two-week pop-up shops at Barneys New York and Colette in Paris, on June 22nd! The label, already widely accepted in Seoul, Hong Kong and Japan, was originally created to boost sales during our current economic crisis and is expected to exists as long as the recession does. Designs play it safe with popular silhouettes in checkerboard, gingham, polka-dot and floral prints and range in price from about $90 for tees to $630 for jackets. Not exactly recession ready prices in my books, but hey, Comme Des Garçons, what did you expect?

“Street-style phenom Scott Schuman, otherwise known as the Sartorialist, has a book coming out this fall, and in classic Sartorialist style he’s paying careful attention to all the details. A profile in the Times UK this weekend reported that he turned down several book deal offers before settling on Penguin, the only publisher able to “meet his just-so requirements.” Scott will also enjoy a little action at Barney’s where he’ll hold the stage with his own little Pop-Up Shop in Barneys New York. Expect to find the book and a couple of key accessories like suspenders, cufflinks, and more.

Naked & Famous is an amazing Canadian based denim designer based out of Canada who has completely peaked our interest with their silk and denim blend jeans. The jeans are made up of 30% silk which makes me think they have to be super comfy. Naked & Famous definately doesn’t mess around with their denim either, with only three fits for men and five for women, it’s all about quality. Be sure to check out their site for a complete rundown on fits and washes. To get your hands on some of these bad boys your going to have to get yourself to a Barney’s or Denim Bar quick.

A Celebrity Line Gets Celebrity Backers

It must be really nice to be a celebrity. Andre 3000 is getting some major help from celebrity friends, Charlize Theron and Stewart Townsend, when his new clothing collection launches at Barneys New York on September 4th. The two famous love birds will be hosting a party in honor of the Polaroid picture man at Barneys to celebrate his exclusive deal with the retailer to carry his goods.

Charlize and Andre will star in Townsend’s send up of “Battle in Seattle”. I guess the Oscar winner was taken back my Andre’s ability with a needle and thread. Be sure to crash this one indies, the celebrity potential is huge and I’m sure the afterparty will be one you won’t want to miss.

High Price/Low Style

Fashion is a funny thing. You can buy a pair of jeans that look like new for $30. If you want them “distressed”, with authentic fading, whiskering, maybe some fraying or paint splatters—the price can go up a few hundred bucks (and I have to wonder, are they referring to your distress after you see the price tag?). In no other industry does the price increase for an item that looks like its had the shit beaten out of it.

So, think about this—you go on trip. You open up your jewelry roll after a few hours of travel, and all of your jewelry is tangled in a hopeless knot that is going to take hours to get out.. Well, guess what! Barney’s wants you to pay a cool $800 for a big clump of knotted jewelry that you can get for free with the stuff you already own by throwing your jewelry box down a flight of stairs. Plenty of other designers accomplish this look, and do it better, for a fraction of the price (check out Dirty Librarian Chains).I guess at least you won’t have to worry about what will happen to this piece after a few hours on a plane …
