Macy’s Hitting Below the Belt in Martha Stewart Lawsuit

Proceedings are under way in the case of Macy’s v. Martha Stewart Living and it’s already getting ugly with the former bringing up the latter’s prison record and referring to rival J.C. Penney as a “less upscale retailer.” Meanwhile, sounds like someone got a few high profile diffusion lines and thinks they’re ballin’ like Barneys all of a sudden.

Macy’s is fighting to stave off a deal Martha signed with JC Penney — allegedly behind their back — while trying to keep the brand all to themselves. Stewart had sold a 16.6% stake in its company to J.C. Penney back in December to begin selling there in February 2013, directly after the deal with Macy’s was set to expire. However, Macy’s decided to extend its contract with the brand for another five years on January 23, the same day it also decided to sue Martha and co. Macy’s is now seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia from going any further in its deal with Penney’s, though that deal is still a year away.

“MSLO’s announcement of its deal with J.C. Penney…devalued the Martha Stewart products that Macy’s is currently selling, in ways that are not calculable,” Macy’s claims in its breach of contract suit. “MSLO has severely damaged the ‘crucial connection’ between Macy’s and Martha Stewart that Macy’s has devoted years and tens of millions of dollars to developing; it has destroyed the public perception that Macy’s is the only place a consumer can turn to to purchase Martha Stewart home products in key categories.”

The suit also makes reference to that dark, poncho-filled time in Martha’s life when she was sent to prison and her company’s image and reputation were subsequently tarnished: “At the time Macy’s negotiated and entered into the agreement in 2005 and early 2006, the ‘Martha Stewart’ brand was under pressure by very public proceedings and their aftermath involving Ms. Stewart.”

Well, if Macy’s wins this case, things are going to be super awkward at the dinner table and no amount of parsley can garnish away the things said in the heat of battle. [WWD, sub req'd]

Virtual Statues of Daphne Guinness to Go on Display in Paris Department Store

Daphne Guinness is going on display once again. But this time it’s not a window performance piece at Barneys nor an exhibit dedicated to her enviable collection of couture. Paris department store Printemps has teamed with the heiress and photographer Nick Knight‘s SHOWstudio to create virtual mannequins of Guinness for their store windows, using photographic images rendered using cutting-edge three-dimensional scanning technology.

Entitled “Visions Couture,” the display will feature these Daphne avatars in looks from Paco Rabane, Gareth Pugh, Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens and Junya Watanabe — in other words, a fierce fashionable feast for the eyes. ”Visions” will also include short films by Knight about each outfit and an interactive display by multimedia artist Danny Brown, utilizing images submitted by the public and passersby. The Daphne-quins will be unveiled come February 6. [WWD]

Yes, but he’s not quite sure that’s accurate. ”I read a column once where they called me a style icon and thought they were out of their minds thinking no one wants to look like me. Simon Doonan: Gay Men Don’t Get Fat

If you’re fashion savvy on any level, you know who Simon Doonan is. The visual charisma he brings to the windows at Barney’s resonates for every style maven from the posh women uptown to the wild experimentalists downtown. Like many icons and influencers tend to do, he started sharing his views with the world through books. His sixth literary installment Gay Men Don’t Get Fat launched this past weekend, and Simon held several speaking engagements (including a very chic breakfast with moi) where he divulged the secret world of the stereotypically stylish gays to audiences young and old. The book’s 60,000 perfect words diffuse and dive into achetypes of all sorts – from the gays to the straight men to the French women – and leave you laughing out loud…in my case embarrassingly so whilst alone in the Grey Dog Café. Here are some insights he shared, preparing us for what was to come in the book.

On stereotypes: I love stereotypes, sweeping generalizations and everything that is un-PC. Stereotypes are fun to goof around with and, in a way, you sort of diffuse them if you throw them around.

On gay food versus straight food: People have the silly notion that there are four food groups. There is really only gay food and straight food. I’m advocating a balance of the two. An oversized beef burrito is basically a phallic symbol, it’s obviously so straight. The gayest food has got to be macaroons, in all pastels and shades. If you lived on them you would explode into a nuclear cloud of gayness. Sushi is also a gay food. You’re taking a big sloppy fish and making it into little bon bons. That seems really gay to me.

On bringing the word “naff” to America: The word naff is a very useful term, you use it to describe something that is just really tragic and dreary and doesn’t have any style, a lack of panache. There is no American word for that.

On female inspiration: Suzanne Bartsch was a woman I found to be really inspirational and funny.

On his message to the masses: I want everyone to be less self-critical and feel less self-conscious, that’s my mission in life.

On his favorite designers: Alexander Wang – he’s incredible, has such energy, he’s really groovy. Azzedine Alaia – it’s fun to go into his boutique and turn the dresses inside out, the construction and level of design is amazing. Paul Poiret – who did all the exotic stuff at the early turn of the 20th century. Also Christian Lacroix, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto.

On International Gays: The gays in London tend to be very mod, they wear their Fred Perry’s. In Japan its crazy, the level of flamboyance, style, and experimentation is incredible. In Paris people are so dressed up its great. There are lots of cocktail hats, lots of transgendered things but not in a drag way, more like a tweed cape and Birkin bag, but in a man way.

On Straight Man Fashion: If you’re in America and you put a lot of attention on how you look and dress, in US context you’re going to be perceived as gay. If you do that elsewhere it may not. I have a chapter on men’s style and what I’m advocating is that gay men and straight men should dress the same but they have to pick from three looks: the perverse prep (Thom Browne, Band of Outsiders, comes from workwear) or the heritage henry (Carhartt, Levis, heritage brands) or the douchebag look (Jersey Shore, Ed Hardy, Abercrombie) it works. It’s all about juxtapositions in the world of fashion, it’s a jigsaw puzzle. It doesn’t work individually, it works as a whole.

On Fads: There’s absolutely nothing in the fashion scene I would like to see go. I love all of it. I don’t have the ability to say “oh yes she looks terrible” because it’s all subjective — as long as she’s happy and having a good time I don’t have that need to kick her to the curb. Probably because I’ve been so involved in fashion history I see it as a landscape. It is not about you, it is about fitting into the social landscape.

On Having Your Own Look:
You’ve got to have your own look, it’s all about self expression. Even if that is objectively kind of demented. Marc Jacobs once said fashion isn’t about trends any more, but it is about having your own look. Self expression is the key to everything. Even if you have a mullet at least you look like yourself. Good. Go buy two mullets.

Word from the front line: “We are seeing a shift toward a 1990s-inspired, single-sole pump silhouette à la Manolo Blahnik. Celine introduced a new take on the platform shoe, Alexander Wang showed great novelty in his lug-sole monk-strap oxfords, and Prada embraced a 1970s-inspired mule with a chunkier heel. Going Gaga For The Holidays! What We Bought At GAGA’s WORKSHOP

Ugly sweaters, generic smelling candles and bath salts BE GONE! Lady Gaga (and her team of Nicola Formichetti, avaf, & Dennis Freedman) has solved all our holiday shopping needs with her Barney’s collab: GAGA’S WORKSHOP. Read through to see what we found inside!

The workshop takes over the entire 5500 sq. ft. men’s floor and turns it into 8 stations: Candy Shop, Toy Shop, Closet (for apparel and accessories), Library (for books, CDs, media, and paper goods), Gallery (for collectibles and specialty items), Jewelry, Boudoir (for candles and cosmetics), and Holiday. Our favorite pieces included a tiny mp3 player that had Gaga songs pre loaded, a baby sized motorcycle leather jacket, and crazy unique sets of elaborately accessorized press on nails.

Lady Gaga threw on some Chanel Haute Couture she had laying around for the unveiling of the hotly-anticipated Gaga’s Workshop on the fifth floor of Barneys flagship store last night. She even had the requisite pair of cartoonishly-large scissors to cut the ribbon — and that’s how you know it’s a classy affair.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a line of shoppers on East 60th St, though some were more determined than others. “We left at 4:45 a.m. thinking the line would be huge,” one Bostonian monster told WWD. Considering the workshop didn’t officially open for business until 11:59 pm, mayhaps they jumped the love-glue-gunnin’ a bit.

Mother Monster was in the Christmas spirit, however, and shined the light of her benevolence on her little monsters, without whom none of this would be relevant: “Yes I have fun fashion ideas and have a knack for trinkets, but the truth is if the love of the fans didn’t mean something powerful from a cultural standpoint, coming to Barneys to buy Gaga presents wouldn’t mean anything.…They wanted to come here for an experience that they could enjoy together.”

Gaga Claus is Coming to Town…and to Barneys

With the holiday season comes the proliferation of all things merry. And to that I say, “Bah! Humbug!” But leave it to Barneys and their fantastical Gaga’s Workshop to ring in all things mary, as the “Born This Way” chanteuse and her right hand gal, Nicola Formichetti have orchestrated a space on the department store’s fifth floor that will turn even the biggest Grinch into a Christmas-loving Monster.

Gaga’s Workshop will host some 170 items for sale, such as a $95 snow globe, a $68 handmade chocolate skull or a $65 claw Christmas stocking in which to stuff them. A new item will be revealed everyday from now until the Workshop’s launch during the “12 Days of Gaga” on the Gaga’s Workshop microsite; today’s featured gift, for instance, is a Gaga face cookie circa her “Telephone” heyday.

Hidden around the city and barneys.com are stickers bearing special codes one can scan or type into the microsite to unlock more info about the Workshop, while Willy Wonka-esque Golden Tickets will be given away to 30 lucky Monsters — allowing them a trip to New York and invitations to the opening of this modern day Chocolate Factory. Working with Barneys creative director Dennis Freedman, Formichetti and installation artists Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide Pierson of Assume Vivid Astro Focus are turning Barneys into a winter wonderland with eight imaginative stations. “We have a candy shop, which is a sculptural piece that holds the candy; the boudoir, this giant wig that will host all the makeup, fake nails and lipsticks; the spider with Gaga’s face with all the fake jewelry and stuff, and this giant pop-up book for all the books Gaga chose,” Formichetti explained to WWD.

Other features include a three-dimensional train for stuffed animals and a giant topiary spelling out Gag’s name, in lieu of a Christmas tree. And flanking the 60th Street entrance will be a giant Gaga monster, dramatic cat-eye and all, created by Sudbrack. Even the famous Barneys windows will undergo a truly Gaga transformation, with four different themes inspired by the Lady’s songs, such as one display completely rendered in “Hair.”

Formichetti also had an invaluable source in the grandmother of all Monsters, Mrs. Cynthia Germanotta. “She knew Gaga’s favorite chocolates or her favorite books when she was little.” Formichetti said. “We really wanted this experience to be like going through her memories, in a very surreal way. For that, I needed the help of Mrs. Germanotta.”

Just last week, mom and Stef Germanotta launched the Born This Way Foundation – to which 25% of all sales from the Workshop will go — to further empower youth and promote equality through antibullying, self-confidence, mentoring and career development programs.

Gaga’s Workshop opens November 21 at 11:59 p.m. and will stay open throughout the night and into the next day, finally closing on January 2. However, if you can’t make it into New York, or if you’d rather avoid the life-sapping holiday shopping crowd, a significant chunk of items will also be available for purchase online so you can still buy yourself some subversive Christmas cheer. The Chronicles of Condé Nast: The André Leon, the Wintour and the Vogue Closet

Kelly Florio Kasouf, the daughter of the late Steve Florio — former president and CEO of Condé Nast — has written the chicest children’s book of the year about growing up in and around the publishing house. The Adventures of Sophie and the City: All in a Day’s Work follows a little girl as she’s whisked away into a magical world of fictionalized Vogues and Vanity Fairs and oh, the people she’ll meet!

There’s an André Leon Talley-esque character, clad in a Louis Vuitton cloak and a fairy godmother bearing a striking resemblance to Isaac Mizrahi in Swarovski crystal wings. I would assume Anna Wintour would be cast in the role of some sort of wicked witch, but Florio Kasouf’s memories of her are actually rather fond. The author recalls having her first lunch with the editrix at age 10:

“She asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said, ‘I’m going to take your job.’ Apparently she had said the same thing early on in her life, so she thought it was cute.”

Yeah, Wintour thought it was real cute. Next thing Kelly knew she was being sent off to live with seven queens who looked for diamonds all day and ended up fighting for her young life after Anna, disguised in Yohji Yamamoto, fed her a poisoned stick of gum.

Anyhoo, The Adventures of Sophie will be sold exclusively at Barneys — naturally — but it being the future and all, there will also be an app for it. And they all lived fiercely ever after. [WWD]

Vice Magazine Kicks Off New Web Series, Fashion Week Internationale

Last night, Sam, Mac and I went to Vice Magazine‘s admittedly badass office in Williamsburg for the premiere of their new series on Vice.com, Fashion Week Internationale. Devoted to the world of fashion not constricted to the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris, each episode of FWI explores fashion weeks from a unique perspective; from countries in political and economic unrest to shows centered around unconventional themes. To wit, the first two installments of the series covers Islamabad’s second ever fashion week and New York’s Full Figured Fashion Week.

Pakistan, a country known more for extremist violence than for extreme couture, possesses a thriving fashion community of dedicated individuals working for something in which they truly believe. Pakistani designers won’t see their clothes in Bergdorf’s or Barney’s anytime soon, let alone on their country’s own women, many of whom still don traditional burqas from head to toe. Despite this passion, it’s hard for Islamabad Fashion Week to shake the stigma of fear and religious conservatism — after all, the fashion shows were staged in a former bomb shelter.

Even for Charlet Duboc, the lovely and statuesque hostess of Fashion Week Internationale, going to the Middle East was a challenge for which she wasn’t sure she was prepared. “I consider myself a fairly worldly person but it made me start thinking: fashion week in Islamabad. What do I know about Pakistan? Militant…a fucking load of shit going down. Nothing good! Fashion? No way, everyone covers up. But there was a story that really needed to be told.” Charlet then went about educating herself but along the way she had to deal with her family, who actually staged an intervention to keep her from going. But as soon as she arrived in Islamabad, she didn’t want to leave.

Greeted by “wonderful, warm” people, Charlet was struck by the youth of the country and their dedication to fashion, particularly the women, who were volunteering backstage and sitting front row. “I couldn’t quite believe it. How does that work? How can you look at that and admire it and yet know you can’t wear it? But they were there, they were appreciating it and it didn’t feel like there was a divide. Like, ‘You do your thing, I do my thing’ and everyone got along.”

Islamabad Fashion Week ultimately proved to be a learning experience for Charlet: “Pakistan is strictly not what we see on the news. There’s shit going on [but] they’re wonderful people, it’s a beautiful country…They have a budding textile industry, even though the economy is up the creek without a paddle. It’s still massively divided, but the people are some of the warmest, most open people and I’ve remained friends with them. I have friends that come visit me in London and I’m going to go back there.”

Throughout the documentary, the thing that intrigued me most was the gay culture in Pakistan, if one even existed. After all, and speaking from experience, fashion is a queen’s industry. “The few guys I spoke to, and that I recognized as gay, when I asked them ‘How is it being gay here?’, they were like, ‘You know, there’s opposition but we get by. We have our own network, we just cope with it. Not a big deal.’ Some of the models weren’t so forthcoming about it. I got the impression that a lot of the men working behind the scenes, like the stylists…they were gay and that their wives quite clearly were like beards.” These men that Charlet came into contact with were very rich, however, and she noted that being gay and poor was probably “not as forgiving.” But then again, where is it?

New York’s first Full Figured Fashion Week was more of a celebration of women than of the clothes themselves. Whereas in the mainstream shows, the clothes often end up wearing the models, at FFFW, the models most definitely wear the clothes. And the celebratory air of the show was contagious, causing Charlet to enthuse that it was one of the best fashion weeks she’s ever been to. And the after party, making no qualms about it, was the best fashion party she’s ever been to. “They were fucking wilding out! You go to fashion week and everyone’s going to faint, no one’s had anything to eat. They were just the most warm-hearted and open [people].”

But like Islamabad, Charlet, being tall and thin (hard life, I know) was a bit wary about infiltrating the world of plus-sized fashion. But turns out she had nothing to worry about. “They were so accepting of me. They were happy to make jokes about it. And when I spoke to them off camera they were like, ‘We were bullied at school. It’s not like I was born being confident about my body.’ That’s what’s inspiring. At the time, I felt like if I woke up tomorrow and I was a size 22, these women are here. There’s a support network. It’s not the end of the world.”

After Islamabad and Full Figured Fashion Week, we saw a preview of the third episode, taking place in Medellin, Columbia, renowned for being Pablo Escobar’s old stomping grounds and thus high on its reputation as a cocaine capital. To shake that stigma, the government stages its own fashion week, Colombiamoda. But downtown is the “real” fashion week, Colombia Para el Mondo, put on by the people and purportedly funded by drug money. Aside from a different clothing aesthetic, the models in Colombiamodo represent a European ideal whereas girls in Para el Modo are curvy and cosmetically-enhanced. Plastic surgery is so prevalent, in fact, that 70 percent of Colombian women have had plastic surgery, starting as young as 16 or 17. To better understand the phenomena, Charlet actually sat through a butt implant procedure — an experience that left her feeling much better about her own assets.

Further installments of Fashion Week Internationale are planned, with Las Vegas International Lingerie Week, followed by Russian Disabled Fashion Week and then Charlet and co. are off to Lagos, Nigeria. Acid drenched the Fall runways and it’s seeping into our clothes. This washed out lemon yellow is the brightest hue to squeeze it’s way into stores – it’s sunflower sweet but slightly sour. Shop the shocking color here.
