Great for naturally curly hair

1.    Start with clean, dry hair in its naturally curly state. Divide it into 3 areas; the back and each side.

2. Take the back; hold it lightly as though making a ponytail without any tension so the curls remain intact. From the ends roll it up into an upward roll, pin into place through the middle of the roll.

3. Now take one side, drape it backwards and roll it up in the same way to meet the roll in the back and pin to secure.

4. Do the same on the opposite side.

5.  Finish with hairspray to hold.

A very ‘in the moment look’ inspired by ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’

If the hair is fine it can be crimped to add texture and volume.

1. Start with clean damp hair, apply Redken Guts 10 to the roots, then with your head upside down blast dry to create as much volume as possible at the top of the head.

2. When completely dry and still upside down make a ponytail and secure with an elastic band.

3. Now lift the head, tease the hair with a wide tooth comb to create an ‘airy’ texture and add a little Redken Powder Grip 03 if your hair is very fine.

4.Form a round loose bun, pin into place and finish with hairspray to hold

A looped-under ponytail

An elegant look with an equestrian feel. A little teased volume and a few loose strands around the face add softness.

1. Start with clean hair. If your hair is damaged or frizzy in texture, use a smoothing styling cream balm like Redken Outshine 01. Apply to dampened hair, then blow-dry it straight.

2. Part the hair in the middle and pull it into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. If your hair is fine, you can tease it a little or puff in some Redken Powder Grip 03 for more volume at the crown then spray it with hairspray to hold it.

3. Loop the length of the ponytail under and secure with an elastic band keeping one small section free. Using the fingers, mold the shape of the looped ponytail into a neat triangular shape.

4. Wrap the loose section of hair around the base of the ponytail, covering the elastic. Pin it in place.

5.Smooth the entire surface with Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil or to give a natural looking shine and finish with hairspray to hold.

11. Rohto eye drops (get them in either cool or ice, the minty feel will make you look like you didn’t just wake up from a five hour nap.

12. Always remember an extra pair of clothing, just because you never know. (cardigan, shirt, jeans/leggings)

Lifeless strands got you down? in a bowl, mix one egg yolk, a half cup of honey, two tablespoons of olive oil, and two small, ripe avocados. 3. Boost Shine
“Dull, overstyled hair benefits from regular olive- or jojoba-oil masks,” explains Goddard-Clark. Starting at the roots, brush a quarter cup of natural oil (synthetic oils don’t work as well) through dry hair and leave it on for an hour. Blast the ends with a dryer for five minutes to help oil penetrate deeper. Skip the roots — the scalp emits enough warmth on its own, and applying extra heat could lead to greasy textures later.

4. Preserve Color
Minerals in the water system can cause brassiness for blondes and redheads. A quick fix? Mix a quarter cup of distilled white vinegar with a half cup of filtered water and pour it over hair before rinsing with cool water. Graying brunette beauties need to be careful, too. “Peroxide-based dyes give darker shades a reddish hue,” warns Goddard-Clark. Use a toothbrush to paint boxed dye over individual strands.

We silently (and fashionably) squealed in our seats when a signature shiny black and gold Dolce & Gabbana bag floated its way into the FashionIndie loft. We knew we were expecting the brand’s new Secret Eyes mascara, but we were not should have been expecting its over the top, ultra exquisite packaging: a black cylinder glass vase of eight indigo calla lilies (full of water at that) wrapped in black tulle and a grosgrain ribbon was packed next to a gold Dolce & Gabbana engraved black lacquered box.  The box was sealed by magnets and opened to reveal a velvet cushion lined package, on par with those made for fine jewelry or expensive pens.  Nested inside, a gleaming gold tube of Secret Eyes mascara.

The words Sex, Sensuality and Seduction are bandied around more often in Fashion and Beauty Editorial spreads than the words “Fashion” or “Beauty” in  “Fashion” and “Beauty” magazines.  Why is that?

Well that is not new news as we have been so heavily inundated that we have reached the point of a mind numbing indifference. Perhaps indifference is not really appropriate. Let’s call it, normal. Seductive, sexy, sensual are all very appropriate words indeed, as that is what most of us strive for. We all want to be appealing to those viewing us and as sentient beings, sexuality is a very powerful part of our id.

But not only are the words being used in the content of mainstream media, but they are being carried over to illustrate the most common magazines read by the general public. In fact if you were to look at a magazine like Numéro ten or fifteen years ago, you would be forgiven for thinking that you were looking at a spread (no pun intended) of Playboy magazine, with more slender and lanky models.

Now I am not here to pass judgment, nor to pontificate, as that is not my role here. I see it as a mirroring of the body politic of the masses, what we wear and how we express our selves through art, photography, music etc… is a very important expression of our society as a whole or better yet a huge snap shot of a point in time that we can study in retrospect to determine the sociological and psychological profile of a society at any given time.

Well, at this juncture in time, it is the norm and not the exception that we adorn fashion magazines with nude or scantily dressed semi nude models wearing very little if any fashion at all. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but most of the more relevant fashion magazines, find it very much a part of the norm to express themselves using nudity as part of their policy to garner a larger reading audience.

Being that we are being exposed daily with gratuitous nudity on the internet, I can understand why they would feel the need to use this very powerful tool of sexuality to sell their products. Without this vehicle, many of them would probably be out of business today. Of course for the more conservative magazines, there are the obligatory nipple pads that often give the models a less than human barbie doll look or even worse the removal of the breast nipples from opaque or transparent bra’s, making the whole thing look absurd at best. In those cases, it is best to not show the breasts all.

But like all things in fashion and fashion is a mirroring of society as a whole, we live in a cyclic world, with what was out of fashion today becoming in fashion tomorrow. What may be considered sexy today will become boring and predictable tomorrow. So who knows, perhaps in the next decade or so, the sexy women in fashion magazines will be depicted in a scenario unintentionally flashing her knee during a dinner date at a posh restaurant or touching her shoulder during a conversation or showing a tiny bit of breast cleavage while bending over to pick up a hair pin.

All I am saying is that what goes around comes around and what we consider shocking today might be the norm tomorrow and that norm just might end up being very boring indeed. So enjoy the ride, “what ever will be will be, the future’s not ours to see, Que Sera Sera…”

Summer is coming and that only means one thing, my hair is going to go crazy! Actually my hair pretty much always has a mind of its own. In the colder months, my hair is flat and crinkly looking, (not a good combo), and in the more humid months, it’s super poof, but not always defined. I’m always alternating between straightening my not so-straight hair and curling my frizzy, undefined, curls. Going chronologically here, when I arrived at the backstage area, the models were all in run-through mode so there was zero motion by the ready mirrors. This gave me a moment to check out the Anna Sui Beauty Bar - she was showing press like me her signature perfumes, her new shoe collaboration with Hush Puppies, and her collection of spectacles.

I told you I went a little nuts with the glasses, but they’re so fly I had to give you a little show of them.

That was fun, but seriously, back to the real models. Zuzanna Bijoch and Daphne Groeneveld give serious backstage face.

The über talented Pat McGrath was responsible for the cosmetic creation. The aesthetic is perfect natural skin with futuristic lashes and lids. She achieved this look with tons of mascara infused with beeswax for extra thickness and playing with liner above the crease of the lid. Just a very small amount of blush on the apple of the cheek keeps the face nude without looking dead. The light white shimmer on the eye is Snow Blossom by Covergirl.

The famed Garren styled the smooth mod sixties hair that carried the show. He calls the look the “Mod Bardot” with fullness at the crown and full fringe with a center part, “Kind of the way Anna [Sui] wears her hair.” To get that voluminous lift at the root, he used Furterer Volumea. Girls with shorter hair were styled in that curly Twiggy kind of way. He envisions this hairstyle on girls having fun, not taking itself too seriously. And we’ve been forewarned, Garren states more as a fact than a vague prediction, “Fringe will be for Fall.”

I serendipitously crossed paths with Anna Sui on my way to enter the front of house to watch the show (we heard the announcement, FIVE MINUTES!) and I managed to squeeze two questions in:

What are you most excited about for your show?

“I hope people like it, that’s what I’m feeling.”

From what I’ve seen backstage, I’ve noticed a mod theme. Is the whole collection going that way?

“You’ll see. There’s a transition that happens, that’s what I’m trying to express.”

I must admit that this might be the funnest (and yes I wrote that on purpose) Rihanna video to date. The video is pretty silly the the songstress from Barbados still manages to keep her sex appeal. (See: Her playboy bunny look in the video) Who doesn’t like a song about Sadomasochism?

As someone, who uses a lot of makeup in her day, I was thrilled to discover ‘Show Stopper’.

Being the ever-willing editor that I am, today I tested out Monica Olsen’s Restore peppermint cleaner and Refine clay masque. While I’m usually very particular about the products I put on my skin (I’m prone to breakouts) I’m a sucker for anything peppermint (and anything that promises deep penetrating clean). A dime-sized dollop of the cleanser left my face tingling, and the masque—which takes two minutes and is not meant to dry—made my cheeks feel baby soft. While some masques leave my skin feeling dry, this one feels like it removed the city grit without removing the moisture from my face. Oh yeah, and in the spirit of today’s beauty theme, I made an inspirational indie playlist for your daily bitchismz!

1. Sparkle all over with a liquid foundation containing gold shimmer particles. Apply with a light hand for a natural look and be sure to blend with a makeup sponge. To avoid overkill, keep the rest of your makeup matte or semi-matte in colors that are trendy during the fall. A few favorable options are shades belonging to the plum and berry families.

2. Wear gold eyeshadow in a metallic finish from lash line to crease. Metallic textures are a fall trend that create a dazzling effect beloved by makeup mavens. If you prefer softer makeup but still want to jump on the bandwagon, try a sheer layer of metallic gold in a cream-to-powder formulation.

3.Highlight your bone structure with gold. The key to not overdoing it is to choose only one region of your face that you’d like to call more attention to. Popular options would be either the cheekbones or the brow. Use very finely milled gold shimmer applied sparingly for a wearable look, even in the daytime. To go even softer, an alternative product would be a shimmer powder with the most minute flecks of gold. You can use this as well on your decolletage.
