Jeanne Beker was covering Paris Haute Couture Collections as she has done for the last 25 years for CTV’s Fashion Television. However, this Paris Couture Fashion Week was kind of special as Jeanne and Benjamin hooked up after several years of not seeing each other since their late teens.

Jeanne and Benjamin reconnected a few months ago and finally met up at the Bristol Hotel in Paris yesterday. Benjamin Kanarek and I spent four hours with Jeanne Beker and her production crew when Jeanne interviewed Benjamin Kanarek as part of a segment on his career that will be integrated in to the photo shoot that Benjamin will do for their new magazine shortly. In so many ways the title should read Benjamin interviews Jeanne and Jeanne interviews Benjamin.

It was quite amusing to watch Jeanne and her crew entering the hotel lobby where Benjamin did a surprised attack and screamed out loudly “JEANNE!” where she spun her head around and screamed “OH MY GOSH!”. Benjamin approached Jeanne and literally lifted her up off the floor and gave her a huge bear hug. They were cracking some pretty hilarious jokes and it was as if they had only seen each other yesterday.

I really enjoyed listening to the interaction between Jeanne and Benjamin (Bernie as she used to call him) as they talked about their careers and how in many ways their paths have been similar. Both Benjamin and Jeanne were involved in the music business as well as being heavily ensconced in the fashion industry. Jeanny Beker is the Ipso Facto Canadian Voice and Face of Fashion. She has an incredible sense of humor and has an infectious laugh that is highly contagious to say the least. Her warmth and openness is such a pleasure to experience, as it is so rare in this business called the Fashion Industry.

The backdrop of the Bristol Hotel, (where Benjamin Kanarek shot Haute Couture Collections for Harper’s Bazaar last January with model Marlena Szoka) was a perfect environment to highlight the importance of Jeanne Beker’s involvement in the Fashion Industry.

Once the photo shoot and video coverage are complete and the images published, I am sure you will be able see it on TV, as it is syndicated in over 100 countries world wide, as well as being reported on Benjamin Kanarek Blog.

Here is an instructive video where Jeanne is being interviewed on “Daytime” a Canadian lifestyle program where she talks about her career in Fashion, her life journey, some philosophical aspects of living in the fast lane and just being Jeanne Beker. I found this interview illuminating, informative and enlightening. I can say this with undisputed certainty, she is one very unique and irreplaceable soul.

Our choices came from all of the major model agencies around the world. These models are quite new on the scene and from the Model Agencies newly added to their Main Boards, or coming from New Faces or Development Department. Our decision is purely subjective and is based on our own personal bias. What is really nice for a change is that these models actually look like women, with breasts a defined waste line and womanly hips, unlike some of the more androgynous models out there. I find this to be a very refreshing change back to the future of the Super Models of the 90′s and the new generation of Laetitia Casta and Lara Stone looking models.

Amber Anderson (Below)

You might remember model and actress Amber Anderson from Benjamin Kanarek’s editorial in Harper’s BAZAAR en Español wearing a Peggy Moffit wig… Amber has just shot the new Fall-Winter 2011-2012 Burberry Advertising Campaign photographed by Mario Testino and is the fresh face for the new Kenzo Fragrance coming out in September 2011.

After being published in the April issue of Harper’s BAZAAR China, the Spring-Summer 2011 Haute Couture editorial shot in the magnificent decor of Le Bristol Palace Hotel in Paris with model Marlena Szoka lensed by Benjamin Kanarek has also been published in Harper’s BAZAAR en Español, May 2011 Issue.

Luz Resplandeciente

In an absolutely ethereal atmosphere, Marlena wears these amazing Haute Couture looks from the Spring Summer 2011 Collections of established Couture Houses the likes of,  Gaultier Paris by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal, Chanel Haute Couture by Karl Lagerfeld, Elie Saab Haute Couture, Alexandre Vauthier Couture, the last Dior Haute Couture Collection by John Galliano, Armani Privé by Giorgio Armani, Valentino Haute Couture by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci.

A New Generation of Couturiers

This new publication reveals 3 bonus images featuring 3 fashion designers of the New Generation. There is an interesting twist in what they have on offer, their use of silver and metal in their outfits, which were  all selected by the young and dynamic Japanese fashion editor, Sohei Yoshida. These designs are in stark contrast to the soft billowy mist surrounding Marlena Szoka.

Maxime Simoëns

The 26 year old French Fashion Designer, considers his Collection Semi-Couture (an intermediate category between Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear) as the prototypes are not tailored made for the client, but are available in different sizes. Nonetheless, his craftsmanship featuring the “à la Française Know-How” gave him the privilege to be invited during the official Schedule of the The Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. For his first “Haute Couture” show, he gave his own interpretation of French Queen Marie-Antoinette’s slice of life (no pun intended).

The chain dress is one the master pieces of his collection that needed more than 300 hours of work and weighs more than 35kg. It represents Maxime Simoëns vision of Marie-Antoinette as a prisoner in La Conciergerie waiting for her judgment and execution.

Jantaminiau

Since 2007, Jantaminiau, from Dutch Designer Jan Taminiau, has showed his collection twice a year in Paris during Couture fashion week. Surrounded and inspired by antique dealers, decorators and interior designers, Jan’s Collections are a combination of artisan techniques and a constant experimentation with forms, shapes and fabrics.

Marlena is waving in a silver and gold sequins embroidered jumpsuit and full pearl grey chiffon over-coat perched on extremely high pumps inspired from Japanese Ippon-ba Geta and Chopine platform shoes worn in Venice in the 15th Century.

On Aura Tout Vu

Is a duet of two Bulgarian Fashion Designers: Livia Stoianova and Yassen Samouilov, primarily Accessory Designers for Couture Houses like Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Givenchy. They founded “On Aura Tout Vu” that is a French expression meaning “You think you’ve seen it all” with André de Sà Pessoa, from Portugal, who passed away in 2005. Since 2002, On Aura Tout Vu presents its own Haute Couture Collection in Paris as Invited Member of the Fédération Française de la Couture.

Their Spring-Summer 2011 Collection takes us in a “Kingdom of dreams where the bodies of the fairy queens are covered with a thousand sets of jewels that shine with a fiery glow.” Marlena embodies the LadyBird in this spectacular outfit mixing Haute Couture and silversmith craftsmanship with its leggings and body entirely embroidered and topped by feathers carved in a metal cartwheel ruff which has already been purchased by the only other LadyBird: Lady Gaga herself !

Emmanuelle Alt is writing her own ticket for VOGUE Paris. I was not expecting a fundamental change in the Editorial Direction being that she has been the Fashion Director of the magazine for over ten years and collaborating with Carine Roitfeld. Thus the assumption that there would be little change from the status quo. However, the April 2011 issue of VOGUE Paris gives a clear new direction; bye bye porno chic, provocation, unjustified nudity, welcome softness, lifestyle, casual clothing. Emmanuelle’s approach is more consensual and obviously more commercial, which the fashion customer might find more accessible.

I want to show in French Vogue more and more a lot of clothes … It’s a different point of view, but nobody gave me a mission to change it or make it more commercial. she stressed in her WWD’s interview

Her vision of fashion is also conditioned by the choice of photographer she has decided to collaborate with and thus don’t expect any radical changes in those she has already worked with.

I want to keep the quality, the photographers we work with—David Sims, Mert and Marcus, Mario Testino, and Bruce Weber. I don’t think there should be radical changes. The magazine should still be chic and sophisticated. VOGUE.com interview

There has been one huge surprise however… The Return of Hans Feurer in VOGUE Paris is great news and a welcome change.

Hans Feurer’s style is easily recognizable:

• Outdoor shoots, long lenses, grainy film aspect, blurred background, sharp on the model (bokeh effect), sunrise or sunset light and often with the introduction of back light and flare.

This style was in “VOGUE” in the 70′s and 80′s and has come back in to fashion since certain internet bloggers started to photograph street fashion a few years ago. The styling often associated with his photography is ethnic, tribal in wildly natural spaces. However, he can express himself in a more urban environment as he did recently in French VOGUE with Supermodel Anja Rubik.

Feurer, a highly renowned fashion photographer in the 70s and 80s, is Swiss born and studied photography in London. In the ’60s, he became a photographer for British Vogue, Vogue Paris, US Vogue, Marie Claire, French Elle… He photographed most of the major supermodels from Claudia Schiffer to Laetitia Casta with Yasmeen Ghauri, Christy Turlington… He launched Amber Valletta in French Elle Magazine.

Who do you dream to photograph?

- I had the chance to work with the most beautiful women in the world from Pat Cleveland, Christy Turlington to Stephanie Seymour… Kate Moss is the only one that I haven’t photographed. Excerpt of his interview in the Contributor Section of French VOGUE April 2011.

I would add “so Far”… , but I have the feeling that with his statement in the Contributor Section of the magazine, this omission will be repaired quickly enough.

Some of his archives

In the early 60′s, he was assisted by French Photographer Patrick Demarchelier. Hans Feurer is also renowned for his collaboration with Kenzo for several of their Ad Campaigns in the 70′s and 80′s and was well known for his shooting of lingerie and swimsuits in a beach environment. In 1974, he directed the famous Pirelli Calendar.

Over the past few years Hans Feurer is back on track with magazines the likes of Numéro, I-D and VOGUE China, etc…

I really appreciate the fact that Emmanuelle Alt went for the original “Real Deal” photographer rather than one of the numerous copies amongst the younger fashion photographers emulating his and Eddy Kohli‘s style.

You know, all of you out there including myself who think that what is happening is what IS happening are wrong.

The HOT item right now are images taken on the streets with real people wearing

what ever they wear and being cataloged and highlighted in all of the major press.

The press then try emulating that look with real people wearing fashion that the magazine
stylists have chosen to give them a genuine on the street and caught by
accident look. They get photographers to take “Snap Shots” to give
them that “LOOK” and publish them.

The Politics of Fashion Photography Part 2

The networking challenge

Before jumping head first in to this subject, it is important that you do your homework. But before doing
your homework, you need to know what to study. All magazines of repute
have a very specific hierarchy. It generally goes as follows.
Publisher, Editor in Chief, Creative
and or Art Director,
Fashion Director, Beauty Director and Fashion and Beauty Editors.

To add to the mix, most of these magazines use outside sources of Fashion ad Beauty Editors who work freelance for several
of the Top Fashion
Magazines. It is your job to decide which magazines you want to scope
out and research who does what and with whom. It is also important to
know who they work with on their home turf and who they collaborate with
when they shoot in the different cities of importance to them. To know
this, you will have to know when all of the Fashion Weeks take place
and who will be there and which Stylists are wring with which magazines.
Stylists for all intent and purpose are considered Fashion or Beauty
Editors. You may call them Fashion and Beauty Stylists as well.
