Jay-Z to Rock on Air for Rocawear with New TV Ad

After firing half of its employees last month, Rocawear is rebounding with a Lucite crib full of licenses and a new marketing strategy featuring none other than the man behind it all, one Mr. Shawn Jay-Z Carter Knowles.

Rocawear will debut its first ever television campaign titled “From Marcy to Madison Square” starring the Jigga Man and chronicling his oft-told rise from the Marcy Projects of Bedford Stuyvesant — otherwise known as The Livest One — in Brooklyn to selling out shows in Madison Square Garden. The spot will utilize footage from Jay and Kanye West‘s Watch the Throne concert at MSG in November.

“This is a really big deal, and fashion companies don’t usually use television. We are investing in the brand,” said chief marketing officer Jameel Spencer. “We are looking to spend more money than we did in the past in marketing this brand.”

Said brand has a total of 26 licenses around the world including children’s wear and newly signed swimwear, home goods and watch licensing deals. Whether the company plans to include a range of feminine hygiene products was not available at press time. Like the rest of the fashion world, Rocawear has also begun to focus heavily on the Asian market.

As for Jay-Z, speculation over his continued involvement with the brand should — much like Baby Blue Ivy — be put to rest. Along with the commercial, Jay has strengthened his relationship with Rocawear by renewing his contract to endorse the brand into 2014. [WWD, sub req'd]

Out Of This World: Kanye West & Jay-Z “Watch The Throne” Planetarium Listening Party

Get your catcher’s mitt out, because we are about to drop a lot of names: Jay-Z. Kanye West. Beyonce. Solange. Kelly Rowland. Lyor Cohen. Tory Burch. Vanessa Simmons. Angela Simmons. Forest Whitaker. Q Tip. Busta Rhymes. AJ Calloway. John Legend. Jada Pinkett-Smith. The list goes on. All these A-Listers gathered last night in NYC with about 80 other guests (including yours truly for FashionIndie) at the Hayden Planetarium in the Museum of Natural History for an uber-private listening and outer space star show of the duo’s hotly anticipated Watch the Throne album.

Jay-Z told us that it has taken them 9 months and 3 incarnations to get to the point the album is now, and he referenced how he and Kanye West really “pushed each other” to get it to this level. A slight reference to the rumored physical altercation they supposedly got into earlier that day? Maybe. Rumors that we are possibly insinuating? Definitely. As for the music? Lots of soulful sampling, heavy, heavy bass, and their standard references to taking over the world, shooting above the stars, and having way more money than all of us (Memorable note: “Black card, black tie, black opulence.”). They even dabble in dubstep towards the end, which was well received by the models and club kids in attendance. The album is set to drop in the early Fall, but tickets are already on pre-sale (presale code WTT) for their tour dates, so we suggest you get on that now if you want to witness one of the greatest hip hop duos of our generation.

Following in the footsteps of Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Eva Longoria, Gwen Stefani has joined the ranks of beautiful faces for L’Oreal Paris. In addition to the print ad preview, you can see her first full commercial for the brand on Sunday when it debuts during the Golden Globes.

Stefani is obviously excited about her new campaign:

“I can’t believe I get to be one of the L’Oréal Paris girls,” Stefani said. “I love playing dress up, on stage or shooting videos, it’s always been one of my favorite parts of being in a band.”

I love that L’Oreal chose an edgier personality rather than a super duper girlie glamazon. What do you think of Gwen’s new job?

Kanye strikes again, and as much as I hate him he is a bit smart.

We’ll start with what he did. Taylor Swift won an award at the VMA’s for best video. As she was giving her speech, Kanye jumped on stage, took the mic from the poor girl, and proceeded to say that it was terrible that Taylor won the award and that Beyonce had the best video of the year.

I’ll start off by saying thank you Kanye for letting us all know what you think, now if you could kindly sit down and shut your mouth that would be great. I will say however, with Kanye not being in the spotlight too much lately this really helps. He’s already a trending topic on Twitter, and you know he’ll be all over every gossip site in minutes.

The nautical-themed ads will appear in Samantha Thavasa’s 117 shops nationwide in Japan.

Indies, in case none of you received the note I sent via carrier pigeon, I personally have a crush on Mrs. Tina Knowles *singing Here’s to you Mrs Robinson/Jesus loves you more than you will know*. Hot old chicks rock! However, anytime anyone starts peddlin’ wares on HSN, my spidey sense starts tingling and I get a huge rash on my butt the shape of Texas. We all know that the whole House of Dereon thing hasn’t gone so well since most of what they’ve put out can only be worn on stage ‘Survivin’ with Destiny’s Child or pattin yo weave on the set of Single Ladies. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still drank Beyonce’s bathin’ water after a rough and sweaty world tour but Dereon wasn’t what I thought it would be………………or actually it’s exactly what I thought it would be *sad face/disappointment in life*.

Everything’s just so random and the word “cohesive” is like a child no one wanted but no one had the courage to get rid of so they just ignore it. I stang by how yummi Tina Knowles make me feel on the inside part but it’s time to put this project sleep in the sweet rest of Jesus and euthanasia. Of course, I am talking about HSN and that’s where fashion is murdered slowly along with your salary. Which brings me to my 2nd point, I’ll be starting an HSN rehabilitation group soon……..not for me, for you………really………..don’t judge Z’maji!

Here’s Beyonkey Donkey(I mean that with the utmost obsessive desire) gracing the cover of Elle in what has to be the most gangsta promotions blitz since Comb-Over Trump bulldogged his way onto every morning show to rip Rosie O’Donnell a gaping new birthin’ shoot. I wonder if Grace Jones knows that Beyonce challenging her swag? Clearly this new dark chapter in B-style is leading up to the looks that Thierry Mugler will be designing for her tour. Now THAT, Indies, makes me so happy, I’m having a happy ending right now………………..and you’ve all be a part of it…………Now Put A Ring On It!

I’m personally enjoying her departure from her signature, wholesome, southern pageant girl sparkles………………….of course I’d suck her putrid toes after she’d finished the New York marathon in air tight shoes and no socks on………..don’t judge me!

Fashion F*ck Ups: Beyonce

Oh no Beyonce, this was not a good wardrobe choice for you unfortunately. I thought black was supposed to be a slimming color, it didn’t really work out too well on this one. Beyonce looks like a stubby, ballerina in a terrible leotard and boots. This looks does not flatter her figure at all, and should be burned. I guess the married life has her a bit too comfortable.

I know it was “the thing to do” in sixth grade but having holes in your jeans is about as cool as naming your left nipple Beyonce Knowles and claiming no one is ready for your jelly. When you’re a hasbeen 30-something, attempting to hold on to a small shred of your youth by hitting the streets with a pair of jeans that look that you spent the last two weeks on your knees in front of of a casting director cause no one in Hollywood takes you seriously, you’ve got a problem. Take it from me, kneepads are the new holes girlie, so ditch the strategically placed wear-n-tear and get in with the times.

The only type of holes I can thoroughly endorse are those caused on your brain from a major dose of E on rave nights.

Solange Knowles Brings on the Armani
