Fashion Wars: Lincoln Center v. Milk Studios

Ever since Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week moved from the tents at Bryant Park to the metaphorical tents at Lincoln Center, more and more designers have opted instead of external sites to hold their fashion shows. One of the most popular venues, Milk Studios, is now in direct competition with Lincoln Center for both sponsors and designers.

SLIDESHOW: CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Announces Top 10 Finalists

Anna Wintour and her flock of the fabulous have meticulously the selected 10 designers (and design duos) in the running for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award. Last year, Billy Reid took the top prize of $300,000, a year of mentorship and a bronze trophy. The two runners-up Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo each took home $100,000 and a year of mentoring. This year, the judges are Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler (who join the committee for the first time this year), Mark Holgate of Vogue, Jeffrey Kalinsky of Jeffrey and Nordstrom, Steven Kolb of the CFDA, Reed Krakoff of Coach, Jenna Lyons of J.Crew, Andrew Rosen of Theory, Diane von Furstenberg of the CFDA, and of course the Queen herself, Anna Wintour of Vogue.

FASHION SCRAMBLE: Decarnin’s Balmain Replacement + Marchesa Does Playboy + Anna Puffs on a J. Crew

-  Olivier Rousteing is expected to step into Christophe Decarnin‘s allegedly crazy shoes at Balmain, according to WWD, making good on its promise of hiring an “unknown.” Rousteing, a key deputy under Decarnin, has worked for Balmain since 2009 and was at Roberto Cavalli for six years prior. The label will reportedly announce Rousteing’s appointment as early as next week. Sounds like Balmain’s bold shoulders are in good hands. [WWD]

The Heavy Pets get Fashionably Rocked

FashionIndie’s styling adventure with The Heavy Pets, an explosive rock-funk-jam band, began Wednesday. They’ve got to look fly for their concert TONIGHT (3/18) at the Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg. Thus, lead singer and guitarist Jeff Lloyd came along on this sartorial journey as the band ambassador, and tried on clothes with equal parts wariness and enthusiasm. The goal was to capture the sound of The Heavy Pets through this evolving look. We ran the gamut on the levels of fashion starting on high in the Maguire Steele PR showroom, rode the fast wave biggies like Zara, and rummaged through thrift treasures at Beacon’s Closet. The Pets scored some serious swag, and also hopefully learned a thing or two about the art of shopping and dressing.
