Metallic bodycon dresses

Metallics are absolutely everywhere this season. From shoes to scarves and everything in between fashion has come over very futuristic. Shimmering silvers and golds, sequins and embellishment take your dress from drab to fab. Ramp it up even further with a bodycon dress; this will definitely get you noticed.

How to wear? 

Styling details to keep you on point can include one-shoulder straps, studding and embellishment as well as bust cups and contrasting metallic belts.  Keep the metallic trend going in your shoes and jewellery. Give the look a bit of an eighties vibe with wrist cuffs, black and gold envelope style clutch bags and chandelier earrings.

Lacy LBDs

The little black dress never fails to impress, but this season you need to spruce it up a little if you want to compete with all those shimmering metallic-clad ladies. The only way to do that this season is with lace, and plenty of it. Whether bodycon, shift, a-line or skater, lace adds a sultry, sexy touch to an otherwise average black dress.

How to wear? 

Lace on the arms, around the neck or layered over the dress are the most fashionable ways to work lace into your outfit, but don’t be afraid to break the mould with lace hemlines and cut-out detailing. Work the grunge trend and go for black from head to toe with colour-matching accessories.

Bright, bold, asymmetric dresses

The colour block trend from the summer is reinvented with richer, autumnal hues such as burgundy, plum, mustard and emerald green.

How to wear? 

A favourite style for these eye-catching dresses is asymmetric hemlines accompanied by one-shoulder detailing. Corsages, Grecian-style drapes and pleats all add glamour and style and give a nod to the disco fashions of the 1970s. Accessorise in contrasting colours and keep jewellery, shoes and jackets larger than life.

You know what I’m talking about. People turn EVIL for this 24-hour stretch!!

They steal your parking. They cut you off while driving. They push you into walls, step on your toes, snatch the last sweater, climb over your back, sneeze on your shoulder, yell in your ear and contribute to general chaos.

They bite. They claw. And they gnash their teeth at you. They turn into CRAZIES.

I’m not one to pass up a sale, but let’s be honest. People get that look in their eye, and their goodwill turns black towards other shoppers.

Bravo to Lanvin for adding a little more color to the runway. I think this is something we should praise and ask more of cause it’s rare and needs to become the norm. Hello Fashion Bombshells!

Reader Andrea from Cali recently wrote in asking about the Brazilian Blowout or Brazilian Keratin Treatment and if it’s good for Black hair. She said, “I’m in the process of trying to find a good salon that can help me get my hair healthy, but that’s hard to find in San Francisco. But a few of my co-workers are getting Brazilian Blowouts done and I was interested, but I don’t want to damage my hair anymore. Any information you have would be great.”

Having heard of the treatment and knowing fellow beauty bloggers who have had the treatment done but never trying it out myself (sounds too expensive for my blood…lol), I dug in to do some research.

Turns out the ‘Brazilian Blowout’ is actually a trademarked name. According to www.brazilianblowoutblog.com, it’s often misconstrued and explained wrong as there are a number of “Brazilian” hair techniques on the market at the moment. In fact they ask you to not confuse the process which uses keratin with processes that use formaldehyde. Yes, formaldehyde–the stuff used to embalm dead bodies. *shivers*

So what is it? According to the official Brazilian Blowout website:

The Brazilian Blowout is the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment in the world! Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. The end result is smooth, healthy, frizz-freehair with radiant shine!

So what makes them different?

What makes us different? The ONLY Professional Smoothing Treatment that improves the health of the hair. No Damage! and No harsh chemicals! NO FORMALDEHYDE!! Entire treatment completed in just 90 minutes! No down time! The minute you leave the salon, you can wash and air dry your hair, and it will be smooth, frizz-free and radiant! Results last up to 12 weeks. Leaves hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free! Acai aftercare products ensure longest lasting results.

What’s with all the exclamation marks? *shrugs*

So what’s the procedure?

After the hair is shampooed and conditioned with special Brazilian Blowout products (the hair must be squeaky clean in order for the products to work effectively), the hair is then towel-dried and sectioned into four parts. Then the Brazilian Blowout Professional Solution is applied and combed through the hair. After the solution is applied, the hair is blow-dried and then flat-ironed. The hair must be as smooth as possible.

After heat is applied, the hair is then rinsed and the Brazilian Blowout Mask is applied and then rinsed out. Brazilian Blowout Leave-in Conditioner is applied and then you style the hair as usual. Your hair might curl or kink up again when you wash it or it gets wet, but the pattern is much more loose and supposedly remains this way until the treatment wears off. According to videos I’ve seen, your hair will straighten easier and faster with the help of heat styling tools.

I had my hands folded tightly while I mouthed “We don’t believe you, you need more people” because most videos and pics I’ve seen feature non-Black women.

But then I came across this one of a stylist in California performing the treatment on a client who had been in a weave for two months.

The client seemed to have about 6 inches of natural hair with some relaxed ends. The procedure was performed like in the Brazilian Blowout training video but I couldn’t help but cringe over the excessive amount of heat used for this procedure—and even more seems to be needed for curlier or kinkier hair. I’m also not at ease with the amount of tugging done on the hair (our hair whether relaxed or natural is too fragile for all of that) and also with the hair needing to be squeaky clean (hello, hair stripped of its natural oils).

So should you try this?

Well, I’m no Wilfred Beauty Academy or Sheneneh’s Sno Nuf Hair Salon grad, but I’m giving this the side eye for now. If you’re natural and want to switch things up with a straight style, I feel you run the risk of damaging your kinks. We all know the story of a friend of a friend who had natural hair until she went to a salon and her hair was inadvertently heat trained. And if you’re relaxed, all the added heat and tugging with this treatment seem to be excessive. Arguably, some might say a relaxer just might contain more chemicals than the Brazilian Blowout. Might be a point there.

Remember the Rio perm was also supposed to be safe, too. I bet there’s still ladies out there recovering from the bald spots.

I revived this black linen dress from my high school wardrobe last time I visited my parent’s house and I couldn’t be happier for countless reasons. The first is that it still fits! The second is that it’s back in style. The last being that it brings to mind so many priceless memories of high school outings, graduation parties, and girls’ nights out (with strict curfews, of course). I can’t for the life of me remember where I bought it, but it has quickly become one of my favorite LBD’s all over again. It really makes me want to hold on to all outdated item in my closet in the hopes that they will one day be back in style. (You’ll probably see me in a few years on Hoarders). Even I have been found guilty of being stuck in a style box.  I used to have a signature look that consisted of fitted crewneck t-shirts in solid colors from Target.  I wore them with jeans, skirts, or black pants (capri’s, gaucho’s, palazzo pants…whatever was in style at the time).  Until one day I looked in my closet and thought to myself “this is not the closet of a girl with a distinct sense of style”.

I decided it was time to incorporate more prints and dresses into my wardrobe…and I haven’t looked back since.  From my vintage dashiki to my embroidered floral JWLA dress, I not only stepped out of my style box, there is no longer a box in sight!

I brought about this change through my approach to shopping.  When I enter a store now I ask myself the following questions when I gravitate toward a piece of apparel or an accessory:

• Do have something like this already?
• Would this piece stand out or blend into my closet?
• Is this a color or print that I already have plenty of in my closet?

That last question is actually one that I reference often.  I own so much black, white, and gray that I literally slap myself on the wrist when I try to grab something in one of those colors.  I now skim across racks and if there is a particular block of pieces in a color or style (ahem…empire dresses) that I don’t need, I just move on.  There’s a reason why I don’t even step into a White House, Black Market…I’m not buyin’ what they’re sellin’!

Guys, the same goes for you.  Are you stuck in a polo and jeans/shorts look?  Maybe consider trying a cool screen-printed tee or some bermuda/board shorts.  I have several girlfriends that complain that their husbands are in a style rut.  This is a fact.  Consider changing up your look and I bet the lady in your life will notice…

So go ahead.  Take the plunge into a whole new world by breaking out of your style box.  Whether it’s going from solids to prints (or vice versa) or from a hipster to a preppy style (Kristine…holla!), try something new.  Maybe you’ll end up like me…without a box!

The trailer for Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky’s latest mind f—k, was released online yesterday. Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte designed some 40 costumes for the avian thriller and judging from the still shots, Natalie Portman’s ballerina character sports some lovely plumage.

Coming off the wild success of The Wrestler, Aronofsky seems once again to focus on and magnify the tormented human condition. In this particular instance, Portman’s protagonist must compete against Mila Kunis in an attempt to remain the principal of her ballet company. Out of this, the girls develop a strangely close relationship that appears detrimental to Portman’s well-being, or maybe she’s just going bat, uh,er, bird sh-t crazy. The last two seconds of the trailer suggest that Portman eventually morphs into an actual swan.
Certainly, this movie is one that will leave viewers open jawed and slightly befuddled come December 1^st. Fingers crossed that the erotic scenes between Portman and Kunis leave out the double-sided dildo from yet another of Aronofsky’s films, Requiem for a Dream.

This week, Marc Ecko's Cut & Sew line unveiled an ad campaign starring a 3-D Lindsay Lohan hologram, and in July, Time Out New York joined Dazed and Confused on the growing list of mags embracing multidimensional editorial and advertising. Now Armani Exchange is getting in on the action, launching a 3-D ad campaign for the September issues of GQ, Interview, and V. “A survey we did showed that half our customers had an iPhone or a BlackBerry two years ago,” said Tom Jarrold, who seems to believe that somehow means they'd also appreciate a 3-D ad. But wait — there's more! The 3-D glasses that accompany the Matthew Scrivens–shot print ads will also enhance a futuristic, corresponding web video about a motorcycle rider. Okay, whatever, 3-D or not, it stars Arthur Sales as a biker and Tamiris Souza Freitas as his lusty interest, and it ends with them making out while they undress. How could it not be awesome? WWD

This summer I decided to jump back in head first because I have a couple of friends that started playing again and it inspired to get out there and play.  So when I went into the darkest corner of my closet to grab my fab golf clothes that I accumulated last year I realized that I had a problem.  None of my practically new golf skirts and tops fit me anymore!  After losing 30 lbs last year thanks to the support of Out of Control Fatroll, I have had to donate, sell, or give away probably 70% of my closet…and now this includes my golf attire.  I even had a black and white houndstooth skirt that still had the tags on it!!!  I’m seriously frowning as I write this.

Anyway, yay for losing weight!  Boo for having to buy new stuff when you really can’t afford it.  So I sucked it up and ventured out to Dick’s Sporting Goods (love that place!) out in Bee Caves.  I am very proud to say that I walked out of the store with 3 new golf skirts and a Nike golf shirt for a grand total of $75!  Now some of you may be thinking “that’s still a nice chunk of change for something you’re going to go out and sweat in”, but for anyone that has ever purchased golf attire this was an amazing deal.  Look at it this way, selling a product associated with the sport of golf has the same conotation as attaching the words “bridal” or “wedding” to anything…it automatically makes it more expensive.  It’s frustrating but true.

Excitement over these newest additions to my closet has led me to a) share pics with you and b) search the net and find other pieces to lust after and show you.  Oh, and I wanted to share with all of you my favorite pair of shoes in my entire closet…my Nike golf shoes.  I swear I ran all over my office showing them to anyone who would give me the time of day when they arrived in the mail.  I. HEART. THEM. SO.

Going to parties after my day job makes me realize that I’m getting old…lol. But I dusted my dentures off, oiled my joints, and saddled on down to Manhattan last night to attend the Vibe Luster’s Smooth Touch Party in celebration of singer Letoya Luckett’s debut as their hot new spokesmodel. How cool is that?

Luster Products Inc, a black-owned and operated hair company that has been in business for over 50 years, launched the Smooth Touch line of products geared to meet the needs of younger, style conscious women who want healthy, head-turning styles (sounds like us!) and tapped Ms. Luckett as the brand’s face.

The line includes products formulated for relaxed and natural hair and include:

So after checking-in I electric slided into the main room and caught a glimpse of both Letoya Luckett and actress Keshia Knight Pulliam looking head to toe GORGEOUS!

Let’s just say photography isn’t in the cards for me…lol.

Both ladies were super sweet. Letoya is very humbled and excited to be the face of Luster’s. Her pic is on the relaxer box

And I also decided to channel my inner-Claire and snap some Real Style pics. Now, I’m not as smooth as Claire is with this so I missed a few names. If you’re pictured and you’re reading please let me know who you are…lol.

I loved this girl’s pretty-in-pink one-shoulder dress and how she contrasted it with the black belt and shoes. Her name is Jewel Danielle and she has an accessories line coming out so I’ll have more info on that soon.

This fly guy is Aldin Morgan and he’s on Jewel Danielle’s accessories line team. I love his fitted jacket paired with jeans and accessorized with those fly shoes, newsboy cap, and Louis Vuitton messenger bag.

Next up, this foxy lady’s jumpsuit and straw hat were too cute to pass up. I love her arm candy, too.

This cutie’s classic navy blue wrap dress caught my eye. Love how she paired it with the tan belt and shoes. Cute smile to match.

I fell in love with this statuesque beauty’s chic white shorts, jacket, and lovely pearl bracelet.

And last but not least these two gentleman came through in some sharp jackets paired with jeans looking too smooth.

Well that wraps up the event!
