Halston Making Yet Another Comeback

Maybe he’s just beating a dead horse, but Ben Malka, the newest chairman and CEO of Halston, is determined to revive the iconic brand. Malka has shaken up the way Halston runs by moving the studios to Los Angeles where they will focus on the Heritage line left so carelessly behind by Sarah Jessica Parker, with plans to relaunch the Halston runway line next year. And unlike the past, money will cease to be an issue. According to Malka, “We are very well-funded, so I don’t have to worry about that. The money was put in by myself and my partners in a big way…The amount is enough for us to screw up for a long time.”

Good, because they’re going to need a little trial and error. Ever since Roy Halston diluted his brand with licensing in the 70s — which led to his firing from the company in 1984 and subsequent death in 1990 — the Halston line has been under something of a curse. Everyone and their mother has tried to revive it with Harvey Weinstein and SJP being the last foolhardy souls to attempt salvation.

Whereas Weinstein’s background is in film and Parker’s main hoof is in acting, Malka comes with a mass of fashion experience under his belt. For over ten years he served as president of BCBG Max Azria and he was planning on retiring until he got offered the job at Halston. “There were maybe two or three brands that could pull me out of retirement, and this was one,” Malka said. “But it had to be all about the way I run it. No outside interference.”

So Halston is now the Ben Malka show. Hilco, which owns the Halston brand, and a silent investor serve as passive partners while Malka holds the largest share in the company. Malka hired away BCBG’s chief creative officer Marie Mazelis to design for Halston then picked up and moved the headquarters out to L.A., where he shares studio space with Mad Men. The unlikely move to the west coast is an attempt to refocus the Halston Heritage line, which they are using as a platform to relaunch the brand.

“[T]he Heritage line… is contemporary and obviously this is the place for that.” Malka explained. “It’s also a global city and a brand like this belongs here. I think it will be a boon to the Los Angeles fashion community.” Halston Heritage will range in price from $50 to $500, with certain pieces going for as much as $2500. The Halston runway line, however, will be based out of New York where an atelier is currently being constructed and is set to debut for the fall 2013 season. Prices are expected to go as high as $10,000. “I want to create a strong differentiation between the two…Halston [runway] is about innovation in technique and fabric. It’s about exclusivity and luxury. Heritage is about making the brand more accessible using timeless codes like fluidity and tailoring.”

Malka will focus on creating a brick-and-mortar presence with shop-in-shops in stores like Bloomingdale’s and Harrods, and there are plans to open as many as five freestanding stores this year alone. Taking a note from Burberry, social media will also be a key factor in Halston’s revival as well as celebrity partnerships. “Halston was one of the pioneers of marrying fashion and celebrity. I value that enormously. Celebrities are incredible ambassadors and we will be making some thoughtful choices after market.”

For now, it certainly sounds like Halston is in good hands. Malka is running a tight ship that includes a heavily-detailed four-year plan and an employee manual that even dictates the font of email signatures. Only time will tell if he and his crew can do Roy justice, but Malka believes they’re certainly on the right track. ”I think if Halston were here today, he would be very pleased.” And so would Liza. Janet Jackson Designs All Fur You

Nevermind Rihanna being the latest celeb to collab for a collection. After being the spokesmodel for Blackglama‘s What Makes a Legend Most campaign, Janet Jackson has teamed up with them to make their newest line of mink. Janet explains this sudden urge to design: “The art of fashion is one of my great passions. I’ve worked for years to bring a collection into the world. Partnering with Blackglama is very exciting.” Let’s just hope this wardrobe doesn’t malfunction. Or that PETA doesn’t pull a Justin Timberlake and rip it by force.

Eric Daman Channels Gossip Girl for DKNY Hosiery

Notorious Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman is bringing some fab set style to the world of legwear. For the first time, Daman has partnered with DKNY Hosiery on an 8-piece collection of uniquely patterned tights for fall 2011. Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen would approve.

“Hosiery is a fabulous accessory and truly makes a woman’s outfit,” Daman says. “Having used DKNY legwear so often on Gossip Girl, it seemed completely natural for me to collaborate with a brand I love to work with.”

The packaging includes unique artwork by Dallas Shaw and pays homage to Eric’s and DKNY’s New York City roots. The collection is available for purchase at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, DKNY and DKNY.com, ranging from $15 to $24.

Michael Kors Getting Into Men’s Underwear

Even though he’s a married lady now, Michael Kors is still trying to get men in his briefs. The fashion tycoon is expanding — pun, as usual, intended — into men’s underwear, loungewear and sleepwear.

The advertising campaign and/or packaging features a badly airbrushed male model with disturbingly small nipples being embraced from behind by a naked woman — probably because the brand doesn’t plan to launch a women’s underthings line anytime soon and because dudes are into naked chicks. So I’m told.

Meanwhile, the line of briefs and boxer briefs — ranging from $28 to $34 — will hit about 100 Nordstrom and Blommingdale’s department stores by the end of the month with Neiman Marcus being added for the holidays. Talk about a stocking stuffer! I’m here all night, kids. [WWD]

Sam Edelman Brings His New Purse to Studio 54

I still remember my first pair of Sam Edelmans – ivory ballet flats, gold chain links, toe cleavage – at the very start of the ballerina shoe explosion. At point of purchase, I thought Sam Edelman was a woman, was surprised to find out he used to be the Sam in Sam and Libby. Point is, Sam Edelman has blossomed into a hit shoemaker since its inception in 2004, and rather than resting on his laurels, he’ll be resting on our shoulders as the brand extends to handbags. Will I remember my first Edelman bag like I do the shoes? Seeing as the inspirations behind the different facets of the collection are Studio 54 and Parisian streets, it seems quite likely.

Discoteque means cheetahs on chains and colors in the clutch. It also means little nibblies inside not meant for the eyes of authority, just you, Liza and Jerry in a bathroom stall.

American Apparel Bidding on eBay

Dov Charney and co. are bringing their trademark blend of sex and sleeze to eBay when they launch an e-commerce American Apparel store through the popular auction site September 1.

American Apparel Shiny Shorts & Shiny Ruched Tube Bra, currently on sale for $25 on eBay…at least it was until I decided I needed it as part of my work wardrobe

In an effort to expand distribution beyond that of its quickly-failing stores, Charney is trying to capitalize on the some 30,000 monthly searches for AA on eBay by selling directly to the inquisitive customer.

Purchases will be made via eBay’s checkout system while AA will handle the shipping and delivery. In return, American will pay eBay a commission on all sales.

This venture is believed to be “part of a larger upcoming eBay platform for dedicated brand stores,” but eBay’s keeping mum on the subject…which means it probably is. American Apparel on the other hand wants you to know they’re not going anywhere.

With talks to open up to four leased spaces in Bloomingdale’s, leased spaces already opening up in three Selfridges across the pond as well as a pending deal to provide apparel to 2500 campus stores nationwide, you’ll have no problem finding your fill of high-waisted jeans, sheer bodysuits and crotchless what-have-yous. Shake It Like a Polaroid, Gaga

Lady Gaga is officially on the campaign trail for “Hardest Working Woman in Show Business.” As creative director of Polaroid, she’s helping to drag that nostalgia-tinged relic into the 21st century.

Among the new products Gaga had a paw in developing is Polaroid’s new GL10 Instant Mobile Printer, designed to work with Bluetooth-enabled smartphones. It prints out 3-in X 4-in Polaroids in 45 seconds, weighs in at 15 oz. with 4-in X 6-in design, requires no ink and can print out as much as 40 pics before needing to be recharged.

Um. Awesome.

The printer is available exclusively at Bloomingdale’s for $169.99 until mid-June, when HSN and Costco get in on the action. But if you stop by Bloomies on 59th, you can take a gander at their interactive display featuring a Gaga mannequin holding a GL10 that takes a shot of anyone standing on a pixel on the sidewalk then projects a giant printout.

Huh, I thought she looked more plastic than usual.

We can expect even more Gaga-inspired and approved breakthroughs, including sunglasses that can take videos and play them back as you wear them and a camera with a built-in printer. Says Bobbi Sager, Polaroid’s chariman: “For the 21st century, you can’t just think out of the box. You have to crush the box. That’s where Lady Gaga comes in.”

Bloomingdale’s Gets into the Mother’s Day Spirit

To commemorate Mother’s Day — the day for which greeting cards were invented (or maybe vice versa) — Bloomingdale’s is showcasing five designers and their mothers in their windows on Lexington Ave.

An adorably young, swimming-trunked Michael Kors sits in the lap of his fabulous mother Joan amongst his latest ready-to-wear and the quote:

“My Mom, Joan, has always been my biggest fan, she’s a constant source of support and inspiration, so to her and to all the great mom’s out there…Happy Mother’s Day!”

Aww, what a nice boy that Michael Kors is, so good to his mother! I bet he calls her regularly — I’m just saying, would it kill you to pick up the phone every once in a while?*

How To Get The Donald Trump Suited Look

You are probably scratching your head at the title, but believe it or not Donald Trump’s signature look is pretty dapper. (Well besides the hair.) Here are the keys ways to look like this millionaire mogul and possible future president of the United States of America.

The Suit: Everyone knows that the suit makes the man and that’s why the Don wouldn’t be caught dead not wearing one. There are many suits that a guy can wear that will carry the same presence. For the more conservative exec a plain black suit that fits well is always recommended and adding a pinstripe in your repertoire will have people appreciating you attention to detail. The Shirt: The same rules apply for the shirt as it did for the suit. You rarely see Donald on Celebrity Apprentice wearing a non solid color (or white for that matter) shirt. The Tie: When it comes to style I feel like if you walked into Trump Towers without a tie you would be fired immediately. The Trump man keeps it pretty simple with his neck wear. Shape, compress and smooth. Thinner fabric means you can’t hide not-so-tight arms as well as you can under chunky knits and jackets. Go three-quarters of the way. If it’s too hot for a full sleeve, a three-quarter sleeve is a good option to take you from office air conditioning to the chilly evening breeze. 13 Bloomingdale’s mens departments across the country will host pop-up shops that will be benefiting the Surfrider Foundation. The shops will carry apparel and accessories most of which are exclusive to Bloomingdale’s from such designers as Marc by Marc Jacobs, Saturdays Surf NYC, Altru, Ralph Lauren, Engineered Garments, Paul Smith, and much more.

For a limited time you guys can go to select Bloomingdale’s locations and bloomingdale’s.com to purchase Surfrider exclusive pieces. 10% of all sales from the Surfrider pop-up shop exclusives will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation, as well as an additional $25,000 donation by Bloomingdale’s.

Along with all of the runway shows and presentations going on at the Lincoln Center tents during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the fabulous Accessories Exhibit was a must-see. But the best part was seeing ultra-luxurious handbag brand Bodhi‘s fall/winter 2011 line. Bodhi Creative and Design Director Joseph Janus drew inspiration for this collection from “Classic and timeless shapes that take a twist on the conventional.” Janus treats each bag as a work of art and uses innovative new materials like embossed animal prints, furs and soft metallic leathers in rich, muted shades.

Bodhi‘s ventures into men’s, luggage and tech pieces come full circle in Fall 2011 with iPad case easels, briefcases and duffles in embossed croc, pinstripe flannel and camouflage cool. NEWS: Macy’s and Bloomie’s Join the Bed Bug Brigade

Gross, gross, gross. New York City, land of the disgusting. Macy’s Herald Square and Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street have announced that our favorite little critters have infested their stores. Bed bugs are spreading like wildfire, and the victim stores are getting classier and classier. Read more…

Bloomingdale’s claims they only saw one bug, killed it and are treating the store for more. Bed bugs were only found in Macy’s 34th Street corporate offices, and the store remains opened. Bloomie’s is the first store to not close it’s doors after a bedbug was discovered.

I am so upset. Why can’t stores be infested with cute puppies or badass zebras?

We all love a good sale. Helmut Lang blazers marked down from $600 to $135 couldn’t make college student happier, but believe it or not, sales complicate the fashion world to nauseam. When large department stores, like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales, have sales, it causes designers and boutiques who carry the same products to consequently lower their prices. Consumers who are given 20% off a Saks expect the same 20% off price at small shops and boutiques. Sales might have helped your pocket book in the fall, but this spring, don’t expect much of a discount. Last season, small shops backlashed against department store sales, for the sake of saving their business, causing some big retailers to fear their wrath if a sale sign goes up. While some department stores are trying to get around this (Saks’ recent friends and family sale), small businesses have recognized and voiced their discontent.

All in all, don’t get your hopes high for too many sales this spring. Now that you’ve had your economics lesson for the day, go home and count your money for this weekend’s shopping spree. Start saying goodbye now.

I’m never one to be drawn to the typical black, white, red and beige “House” plaid of Burberry, but this adorable clutch caught my eye the minute I saw it! I was bumming around the Soho Bloomingdales when the Burberry Bridle Ashcombe Clutch jumped out at me from a corner case. I’m loving the cotton canvas base with leather detailing straps and polished hardware. Heck, I don’t even mind the equestrian Burberry logo on the front of the bag! I initially thought this would be a great Christmas gift for my stylish mother…well, I thought wrong. The 3×11 clutch will set you back $795, a price I simply cannot imagine paying for a bag that can probably only hold a a cell phone, some lip gloss, a tampon and a few dollars. If you’re willing to splurge, this may be the item to do it on!

Missing The Marc

Never in a million years did I think the day where I would bash Marc Jacobs would come. Well, today much be revelation day because the time has come to speak my mind about some of Jacobs’ more recent pieces. I spent last weekend browsing the racks of uptown department stores, and let me tell you, the spring/fall collections from Marc by Marc are anything but fashionable. Above are just some of the pieces I gagged at when I saw them in stores. Honestly, what Marc Jacobs fan would wear a gawdy sweater covered in hearts, a sundress with his name plastered over it, a frock with metallic clubs or a puffy shouldered houndstooth dress? Really, I’m shocked, and not in a good way. What happened to the awesome blazers and denim pieces from the fall 2006 collection or the gorgeous fur and wool pieces from 2007?

Whatever the case may be, I won’t be wasting my time in the Marc by Marc section of Bloomies unless this garbage is out of there.

Told You So: Lauren Conrad’s Fashion Line Fails

Unless Lauren Conrad took her happy pills this morning, there is no reason for this fashion designer to be smiling. If you read The Bashed article on Conrad’s awful “reject homecoming date” dress line on Kitson, you’ll know exactly why this line is hitting rock bottom. The New York Post recently reported that the line hasn’t budged from the racks of the 59th Street Bloomingdales in New York. And if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, the Kitson Boutique in LA is literally donating items from Conrad’s line to charity! Ouch. Maybe Lauren Conrad should just stick to making a fool of herself on reality TV instead of in the brutal fashion industry!

Internet vs. Print: Bloomingdale’s Ditches The Catalog

Here’s a fun story you can tell your kids.

There was once some strange magazine type thing that stores use to send people in the mail called a catalog which featured certain looks and must have items from the store. But then, people realized they were killing a shit load of trees and spending a crap load on reaching customers that would just head online to buy the stuff they saw.

Of course some companies like Bloomingdales weren’t smart enough to make things in the catalog available online, so they lost customers and finally gave up on the catalog altogether.

And so brought upon the death of catalogs, which was quickly followed by the death of magazines and books. So you see kiddies, print is dead, long live the Internet!!!

Oh, what a joy to be in online publishing at the dawn of the death of glossies!!!
