Bon vivant extraordinaire Jean Paul Gaultier will soon launch a new fragrance for men called Le Male Terrible. A revamp of Le Male, the cologne that first propelled itself to the forefront of every sailors we dream in 1995, Le MaleTerrible is the creation of perfumer Aurelien Gurichard. What we’re not seeing with this badassier (note the razor pendant) grapefruit, pink pepper and amber scented blend is the additional Le Male USB Key that came with last year’s fragrance. The key was situated atop the neck of a turquoise torso modeled after the iconic bottle and apparently emitted the cologne’s scent ever so subtly. Two things I have to say about this. First, why position it at the neck? I’d be completely on board with this slightly superfluous gizmo if the plug were jutting out from the blue man’s nether regions. Secondly, and this is a question really? How many people sit close enough to their USB’s that they’re within smell shot? Perhaps, Gaultier saw the error of his ways this time around as the USB key seems not to be making a comeback. Instead, if you purchase from the website, you can personalize your bottle by adding your name. If the example on the site is any indication, tramp stampin that shiz is where it’s at.

Just testing the waters, Helium Magazine released an issue at Stanford’s most recent, Charity Fashion Show, and a delightfully interested response has now lead to a combustuous and fashionably atomic Helium SF. None other than the industrious, beautiful and fabulous, Michele Gates of Fashionable Fun SF. This editor in chief knows the San Francisco Fashion Scene inside and out and can spout out a list of designers, usually the ones in her carefully compiled outfit. Alas, not everyone can see Michele’s daily wardrobe and thus it is both fitting and dazzling that she will be the gal in charge of content.

“I’m excited that Helium Magazine will be a platform to promote the fashion industry within San Francisco,”  Gates said in a recent interview.

To be frank: She knows what’s up, and who’s hot. With so many designers in San Francisco fighting for publicity, Michele objectively chooses talent and knows it when she sees it. Above I am wearing a dress by fashionably favored designer, Magdalena Trever whose designs Gates strutted down market street during the Sf Pride Parade.  And she’s not just partial to females or those who let her wear their hand woven bathing suits.  Gates and Helium have chosen Bacca Da Silva as the main designer of their launch party at supper club.

Who could stand to be blue with Bacca Da Silva leading the way into San Francisco’s first Chic Week? Certainly not me, but Helium Magazine SF just might change my mind.

People who do fashion type things when they go to Japan, will know who Mademoiselle Yulia is already. She has blue hair and is one of those DJ, designer, stylist, singer people, know everyone, be everywhere people. This sounds lame, but essentially her presence signifies party time. Probably more unusually, she recently launched her jewelry line, the stuff in these pictures, it’s called Giza. The music she DJs matches the blue barnet and hallucinogenic wardrobe, it’s a weird mix of Gypsy, Indian and Turkish music alongside the usual J-pop and European dance. When we met up with her in Stockholm the other week to photograph Yulia in the contents of her suitcase, she greeted us dressed as a post-modern Fred Flintstone manga from outer space. It was a totally hot look – obviously.

Vice: Is that your real hair?
Yulia: Yeah, but people always think it’s a wig. I colour it myself every two weeks, it’s like my manicure. High school in Japan is super strict, you can’t look or wear anything too crazy, so when I finished, I started coloring my hair in all kinds of different colors—red, purple and orange, but now people recognize me for my blue hair, so I’ve kept it blue.

You’re in a band too right?
Do you know the Plastics? They were big in the 70s and used to hang out with Devo. Well, they asked me to join the band for their reunion tour, so I’ve played a couple of shows with them in Japan. Tokyo, Osaka and some other cities and festivals.

Did you DJ or what did you do?
I was singing, actually.

Does this mean there’ll be a new Plastics album soon?
No, it was only a reunion tour. But I’m going to sing on my next album, instead of releasing another mix CD. I’m working on it now, it’s a long process but I hope I can release it early next year.

Haha, thank you! I made it myself and will start producing it for my jewelry label, Giza. It’s inspired by rockabilly, I’m very into rockabilly at the moment.

Rockabilly is a good look, especially with a Japanese twist. Have you seen Wild Zero?

I need to watch it again, nothing beats Guitar Wolf saving the world from an alien zombie invasion with their guitars, while screaming, “Let’s go! Lock ‘n’ Looolllllll!!”Anyhoo, tell me more about Giza.
About a year ago I was walking around shops looking for jewelry, and decided I needed to do my own. So far I’ve done two collections inspired by the mysticism of ancient Egypt, and my third will be out this fall. Some is handmade and the rest is produced in a Japanese factory. I want to start selling it outside Japan soon.

Eustace lives off the land, in a teepee, in the hills, on horseback and in the woods. He rode across the country in 103 days, setting a world record that he probably didn’t even know about.

He has immersed himself in nature since he was four years old, roaming the woods behind his suburban house near Gastonia, N.C. At age 10, he purposefully walked deep into a nearby forest, alone and empty-handed, and survived off the land for a week. After high school, Eustace canoed down the Mississippi River and kayaked across Alaska, honing his backcountry skills. Later he lived with primitive indigenous tribes in Guatemala. When he returned to the Blue Ridge in his early twenties to attend Appalachian State University, he lived in a handmade tipi, cooked squirrels over a fire, and wrote papers by candlelight.

Soon after graduating with honors (majoring in anthropology and English), Eustace found the wildest, most rugged land in Appalachia—a 1,000-acre chunk of mountain near Boone, N.C., and gradually bought parcels of it. To pay for the land that he now calls Turtle Island Preserve, he spent years traveling the country on speaking tours teaching primitive skills and revealing the natural economy hidden behind dollar bills—like where food and water comes from, where waste goes, and how clothes are made.

For the past two decades, Eustace has lived self-sufficiently at Turtle Island, growing his own vegetables and raising goats and chickens. He built a log cabin using trees from the property, and it is powered by an off-grid micro-hydroelectric system along a creek. He travels primarily by horse, occasionally riding into crowded downtown Boone on horseback to get supplies. To make ends meet, he offers educational enrichment camps for youths, adults, and organizations, as well as horse-drawn carriage rides through the deep, lush woods of Turtle Island.

She has a long and fruitful relationship with Mango, and once again Scarlett Johansson has been selected as the face for their FW 2010/11 campaign.

Ms. Johansson worked with photographer Mario Sorrenti for the spots, and said she loves collaborating with him with each collection.

An emblematic residence in Los Angeles was the setting chosen by Mango for the photo shoot.

The collection features rich textures including tweeds, corduroys and furs, meet with flowing silks and gold highlights to create a contrast between masculine and feminine and provides a fresh twist on wardrobe classics.

Jill's team took it upon themselves to embark on “upcycling”, where they take the old or damaged items and uses the good fabric from them to create entirely new garments. Dedicated thrifters have been doing this for years but this service is ideal for those who do not have the skills or tools to reinvent a garment.

The pieces I saw when I was in didn't look anything like this, so this is an exciting progression indeed. I'd love to have a poke at the blue ruffle edged satin cape which might have been a dreadful 70's dress or nightgown at one point and now looks beautifully Edwardian.

This is a great idea and if the pieces were truly unique/edgy enough, it's definitely something I'd invest in.
