As Sam and I flipped through the pages of yesterday’s WWD, we noticed some pretty kooky looks stepping off the Milan runways. When we think of Italian style, we think modern, streamlined and sexy. For Spring 2012, it seems the creative minds behind Italy’s top fashion houses decided to drop acid and design together. Not that we mind, but it is an interesting change. Here are some of the most eccentric looks for the Milan runways – would you wear them?

Three Models Hit Their Personal Best for Vogue Italia

Extreme hair, statement lips and exaggerated silhouettes may seem like too much when melded into one look, but they actually complement one another quite harmoniously in the April 2011 issue of Vogue Italia. Models Daphne Groeneveld, Lindsey Wixson and Kristina Salinovic demonstrate their “Personal Best” for photographer Steven Meisel in designs from the likes of Roberto Cavalli, Blumarine and Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere. Stylist Edward Enninful conjured 70s memories with punk rock hair, disco platforms and flowery prints, creating an electric and spirited mood for the commander of Italian fashion. But what makes this spread so spectacular is the intimate personality of the photographs; it’s almost like looking at pictures of very gorgeous, very fabulous old-time friends.

Jacquelyn Jablonski Ain’t No City Slicker for Vogue Russia

What do a gun fanny pack, fringed suede pants and a cow skull necklace embellished with crystals have in common? I am obsessed with them in this spread for the March 2011 issue of Vogue Russia. American model Jacquelyn Jablonski shows us what cowgirls are made of, wearing knee-length braids, denim shirts and heavily embellished accessories. Styled by Olga Dunina, pieces from Pamela Love, Blumarine, Ralph Lauren and Stetson were used to create this western fantasy shot by Jason Kibbler. There’s something about western style that always makes me long for summer. Sigh.

How to Mix Spring Prints Without Looking Like a Clown

Unless you’re oblivious to the current fashion forecast, the weatherman is calling for prints, prints and more prints. Mixing two prints in the same outfit is an art form that can look absolutely stunning or terribly frightful. Check out our tips for mixing prints so you can look like an icon, not an idiot.

1. Mix patterns that have similar prints or forms. It’s important to keep a theme going. In the below D&G look from the Spring 2011 collection, both the prints of the shirt and skirt are florals. With an added splash of the peachy color in the top, the look is coherent to the eye. Another example is the leopard tunic and pants from the Blumarine Spring 2011 show.

2. Keep an outfit consistent with patterns that share similar shapes. As you can see in the look from the Etro Spring 2011 collection, the blue and white squares from the top repeat in the skirt. Although the skirt is busy and the top is tamer, the eye seamlessly moves from top to bottom without getting lost in the patterns.

3. Repeat the same pattern in different colors and sizes when pairing. This elegant look from the Jil Sander Spring 2011 show combines vertical stripes with horizontal and a bold color with a muted one. It works because the patterns are the same size. The look from the Prada Spring 2011 line can also be referenced for the use of the same exact pattern in different sizes.

4. Patterns containing the same color tones go well together. In the Charlotte Ronson look, navy keeps the patterns consistent even though they’re completely different. Hard stripes and soft florals mesh well because they have color in common. Event the craziest mix of patterns can look coherent when color stays consistent. Red and blue throughout the entire outfit make this Wunderkind look a breeze to wear.

5. Similar fabrics make two different prints look like they were meant to be. Both the top and the skirt of this Bensoni Spring 2011 look are made of light, airy fabrics. It’s good to keep cotton with cotton, silk with silk, you get the picture.

Snejana Onopka Dreams of Neutrals and Floral Headdresses

Like a princess who has nothing to do but daydream for hours, Snejana Onopka stares into space wearing gorgeous neutrals and crowns of dried flowers. I’m getting sleepy thinking about long naps in Blumarine, Burberry Prorsum and Louis Vuitton with the scent of potpourri wafting around me. A rose light lends color to this long afternoon haze in the land of getting dressed-up with nowhere to go.

The Blumarine spring 2011 collection was super fun to look through. I’m digging the billowy, rainbow leopard fabrics and fabulous 70s silhouettes. Some of the pieces got a little too Miami for me with the scrunching action, but it’s a nice collection over all. Every party girl needs one of these dresses/jumpsuits in her wardrobe for that beach vacation. If anything, I need a pair of these shoes.

Since Ale has been staying just for a few days, we had to see as much as we could, so even if we woke up with the worst weather ever (and with the worst cold and cough), we decided to go up on the Eureka building, which is the highest in Melbourne. It’s all made of glass, therefore it allows you to see the city from any perspective…it’s amazing!
While we were up there it started raining (nice), but after a while the sun shined again!
Once we got down we had a quick muffin (great thing to start a new day) and we walked to Fitzroy, which is a very hip, cool, alternative area of Melbourne. (There I found in a vintage shop an amazing old Levi’s denim jacket that I can’t wait to show you!) Before getting in Fitzroy we stopped in this beautiful park you can see in the last pics: how nice is that?

It has been a lovely day and even if now I’m in bed sick, it was worth it…

Coke On The Runway

Coke on the Runway? Yeah, you never see it but you know what’s happening backstage. Oh, wait, Coca Cola?!? Yeah, I guess that makes more sense.

It’s Fashion Week in Milan, Italy and yesterday instead of models with hour-glass figures, the models were shaped like Coke bottles. That’s because they WERE Coke bottles…

Coca-Cola Italy, in collaboration with The Abruzzo Charity Project enlisted 8 female designers to design sleeves for a limited amount of “Coca-Cola Light” bottles (Italy’s version of Diet Coke) to be available starting September 25th. Donatella Versace, Alberta Ferretti, Anna Molinari from Blumarine, Veronica Etro, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Marni’s Consuelo Castiglioni, Angela Missoni and Rossella Jardini at Moschino were the designers asked to participate, they said yes and the result is fabulous.

The proceeds will be used by The Abruzzo Charity Project to help people/families affect by the devastating earthquake last year.

They kicked off the project at Fashion Week on Friday by showing the designs on the runway in the form of Coke bottles walking the runway…great idea.

Last year at the exact same time, Coca-Cola asked Roberto Cavalli to design bottles featuring his staple animal spots and stripes and it was very successful. This was the amazing result:

Oh how I wish these bottles were available here in the US. I may have to plan a trip back to my family’s homeland, see some relatives and enjoy a designer bottle of soda…

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Blumarine Fall 2009

Not only was the Blumarine fall 2009 collection out-of-this-world sick, but the runway show made me the happiest person alive at 6:00 a.m. on a Wednesday. Anna Molinari blew pop art out of the water, sending dresses dazzled with Andy Warhol’s flower prints down a runway reflecting a Warhol-esque portrait of herself. A little cheesy? Yes, but completely entertaining and well-done at the same time. Technicolor leopard prints and leather motorcycle jackets were two favorites out of the line. Whimsical mini dresses in classic Warhol blue, yellow and pink added an art installation quality to Molinari’s already artistic fall collection. My absolute favorite was the ensemble with Warhol flower print leggings and a metallic orange jacket; it definitely woke me up more than my coffee did.

Natasha Poly For Blumarine

Natasha Poly for Blumarine’s fall winter 2008/09 advertising campaign.

Photographed by Craig McDean, it’s not the gorgeous clothes that has me loving the new edge in the Italian fashion houses ads. It’s the fact that Poly is sporting the much talked about hair cut for the year, The Aggy, named after Agyness Deyn’s shaggy crop.

I am soooo sick of this hairstyle! Honestly, not all models have to inspire to look like Aggy, and the cut is making girls look like boys, not very attractive considering that models are supposed to be the pinnacle of beauty and grace.
