<p>A <strong>hair-tie</strong> is such a finite, plain Jane way to cap off a hairstyle. There are plenty of ways to put your hair up without such a boring bit of elastic <strong>tying you down</strong>. They’ve been stifling wrist circulation since its invention and it’s high time to put a stop to this humdrum hair-<em>don’t</em>. Time to create a cooler coiffure, sans <strong>scünci</strong>. Here are some alternatives. <span id="more-199085"></span></p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199089" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-114/"></a><a rel="attachment wp-att-199089" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-114/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199089" title="Double Hair-bow!" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Thin-Scarf-as-double-bow-560x480.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="560" height="480" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Whoaaaa a Double Hair-Bow!</strong></p>
<p><strong>What</strong>: Silk scarf, 5’ long, 6” wide</p>
<p><strong>How</strong>: Place scarf under hair and pull up. Smooth out hair and wrap scarf 2-3 times at base for support. Tie into a bow, pulling the loops as far as they will go (without the loose ends slipping through, becoming a knot). Take a side from each bow arch and tie them into another bow. Expand the loops as wide as they go, and there you go.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199106" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-120/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199106" title="Sized Up Fedora" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Size-Up-Fedora-copy1-560x773.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="448" height="618" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Sized Up Fedora</strong></p>
<p><strong>What</strong>: Wide brim straw fedora, one size bigger than you’d normally wear.</p>
<p><strong>How</strong>: Stuff all of your hair into the hat, letting some of it emerge from the beneath the brim. You don’t want to look hairless.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199087" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-112/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199087" title="Raise the Barrette" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Raise-the-Barrette-560x462.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="448" height="370" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Raising the Barrette</strong></p>
<p><strong>What</strong>: Metal squeeze-release clips</p>
<p><strong>How</strong>: Twist hair into a bun atop your head. Bring the end of your hair forward on the last twist. Clip that bit to the roots of your hair. Let the ends fray forward.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199094" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-115/"></a><a rel="attachment wp-att-199105" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-119/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199105" title="Smooth Silk Scarf Caplet" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/flat-turban-copy1-560x372.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="560" height="372" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Smooth Tied Caplet</strong></p>
<p><strong>What</strong>: Silk square headscarf, 3’ by 3’</p>
<p><strong>How</strong>: Fold in half along the diagonal. Scrunch all hair to the back of your head. Place fold along the backside of your hairline, pressing mass of hair into the scarf. Bring the two corners forward and wrap them around so they tie in the back. Here’s the key: bring the middle point of the triangle over to one side and tie it in the same knot as the other two ends. Make a bow, or knot and tuck the ends.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199095" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-116/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199095" title="Hair Hammock Headband" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/headband-hammock-560x841.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="392" height="589" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Hair Hammock Headband</strong></p>
<p><strong>What</strong>: A favorite of hippies everywhere it’s 1/3 encased elastic, 2/3 spreadable fabric.</p>
<p><strong>How</strong>: Place all hair into the “hammock” part as you pull the elastic around your head. I like doing it at a slight angle with the elastic in front, but place it to taste.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199096" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-117/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199096" title="Self-Contained Braid" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/poca-headscarf-560x841.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="448" height="673" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Self-Contained Braid</strong></p>
<p><strong>What</strong>: Thin silk scarf, 5’ long, 6” wide</p>
<p><strong>How</strong>: Tie the scarf around a low ponytail. Split hair into three sections for a braid and place the two ends of the scarf with a section. Braid normally, making sure the scarf shows through. At the base of the braid, wrap each end of the scarf twice then tie the ends in a knot.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199104" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-118/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199104" title="Bow to the Fifties Housewife" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Bow-to-the-Fifties-Housewife-560x841.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="448" height="673" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Bow to the Fifties Housewife</strong></p>
<p><strong>What</strong>: Headscarf, 3&#8242; by 3&#8242;</p>
<p><strong>How</strong>: Fold at the diagonal, and again so the point is at the folded edge. Smush your hair into a wad at the back of your head, and cup it with the middle of the scarf, point side touching the hair (the outer layer should be smooth). Pull tight and tie in a bow just above your temple. Pull out the edges of the arches so that the bow reaches its fullest capacity. If you have bangs, let them hang out.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-199108" href="http://fashionindie.com/8-hair-tie-alternatives-to-up-your-do/sony-dsc-122/"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-199108" title="Over Comb" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Over-Comb1-560x841.jpg" alt="8 Hair Tie Alternatives to Up Your Do" width="448" height="673" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Over Comb</strong></p>
<p><strong>What: </strong>Decorative comb from the days of yore.</p>
<p><strong>How: </strong>Bring hair to a low ponytail, wrapping the base with a small chunk of hair. Secure it together by sinking the teeth of the comb in.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>When it comes to designer vintage, <strong>FashionIndie</strong> does not eff around.  We love everything about classic design &#8211; the uber-high quality, the meticulous craftmanship, the luxurious materials &#8211; not to mention the amazing stories that come with a Lanvin ball gown that is four decades old!  Every outfit tells a different story, and like we always say, the best stories are the ones told in designer.</p>
<p>This Boutique Critique is about the amazing designer vintage store,<a href="http://www.1ofafindvintage.com/index.php"> <strong>1 Of A Find</strong></a>.  Curator and self-professed shopaholic <strong>Honey Moon </strong>goes on buying trips all over the world seeking out beautiful, unique, impossible-to-get-your-hands-on <strong>Hermes, Chanel, Gucci, Lacroix, </strong>and <strong>Lanvin</strong> to satisfy her international clientele.  She used me as a Barbie doll and transported me into worlds I only dream of.  Best part? Her prices are as unique as her collection, so we definitely recommend scooting over to her Brooklyn location asap.  Check out all our amazing finds after the jump.</p>
<p><span id="more-196810"></span><a href="http://fashionindie.com/boutique-critique-1-of-a-find-does-seven-vintage-looks/samvin-210/" rel="attachment wp-att-196818"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-196818" title="SamVin-210" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SamVin-210-560x840.jpg" alt="BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE: 1 Of A Find Does Seven Vintage Looks" width="560" height="840" /></a></p>
<p><strong>This gown was to DIE for.  It caught my eye immediately as a dress made for the 1950&#8242;s movies I play out in my head. When Anna Wintour extends me a VIP invitation to the Met Gala, I will surely be sporting something like this on the red carpet. </strong></p>
<p>Vintage red bow evening dress- $250<br />
Neiman Marcus rhinestone snake shoes- $135<br />
Gold Heart Christian LaCroix earrings- $125<br />
Little Black velvet purse with rhinestone clasp- $65</p>
<p><a href="http://fashionindie.com/boutique-critique-1-of-a-find-does-seven-vintage-looks/samvin-407/" rel="attachment wp-att-196827"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-196827" title="SamVin-407" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SamVin-407-560x840.jpg" alt="BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE: 1 Of A Find Does Seven Vintage Looks" width="560" height="840" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Oh-la-Lanvin!  This split front evening skirt with matching metallic sandals took my breath away.  I channeled Carrie Bradshaw and paired it with a Levi&#8217;s jean jacket and a fun net hat (something so Kate Middleton right now) to mix it up. </strong></p>
<p>Lanvin gold brocade skirt- $850<br />
Black velvet and net hat- $55<br />
1950&#8242;s pink silk slip- $65<br />
1960&#8242;s gold platform sandals- $68</p>
<p><a href="http://fashionindie.com/boutique-critique-1-of-a-find-does-seven-vintage-looks/samvin-522/" rel="attachment wp-att-196826"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-196826" title="SamVin-522" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SamVin-522-560x840.jpg" alt="BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE: 1 Of A Find Does Seven Vintage Looks" width="560" height="840" /></a></p>
<p><strong>The perfect summer maxi &#8212; the sheer chiffon made it cool in the heat while making a major fashion statement with its bold prints.  Paired with Dior booties, a Gucci bag, and a summer straw hat, I was loving this luxe warm weather look. </strong></p>
<p>Sheer floral chiffon dress- $138<br />
1950&#8242;s pink silk slip- $65<br />
vintage coral necklace- $48<br />
wooden beaded necklace- $25<br />
1970s Pottery leaf &amp; corded necklace $55<br />
1970s Gucci &#8220;hobo&#8221; bag- $345<br />
Chunky Amber Bracelet- $75<br />
Wide brimmed straw hat- $55</p>
<p><a href="http://fashionindie.com/boutique-critique-1-of-a-find-does-seven-vintage-looks/samvin-312/" rel="attachment wp-att-196824"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-196824" title="SamVin-312" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SamVin-312-560x840.jpg" alt="BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE: 1 Of A Find Does Seven Vintage Looks" width="560" height="840" /></a></p>
<p><strong>You can&#8217;t do Brooklyn vintage without channeling a little inner hipster.  These Dior shoes (with the angelic sweet bows), vintage Levi&#8217;s and amazing seuqin blouse kept the look casual but party ready.  A python bag and flat brimmed hat made me look MUCH cooler than I am. </strong></p>
<p>Silk and Sequin blouse- $85<br />
Stetson hat fedora- $125<br />
Vintage Levi&#8217;s 501s- $85<br />
Dior Python and leather shoes- $65<br />
Beige python and leather bag- $135</p>
<p><a href="http://fashionindie.com/boutique-critique-1-of-a-find-does-seven-vintage-looks/samvin-703/" rel="attachment wp-att-196823"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-196823" title="SamVin-703" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SamVin-703-560x840.jpg" alt="BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE: 1 Of A Find Does Seven Vintage Looks" width="560" height="840" /></a></p>
<p><strong>What screams glamour like a metallic jumpsuit?  Nothing.  What screams glamour-queen? Pairing it with these futuristic shades, a geometric statement necklace, and lace up leather booties. Retro chic and ultra fierce</strong>.</p>
<p>1980&#8242;s silver colored jumpsuit- $115<br />
Etienne black and gold belt- $35<br />
Maud Frizon brown leather booties- $138<br />
Liz Claiborne 2 tone glasses- $45<br />
Monet black and gold necklace- $65</p>
<p><a href="http://fashionindie.com/boutique-critique-1-of-a-find-does-seven-vintage-looks/samvin-605/" rel="attachment wp-att-196822"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-196822" title="SamVin-605" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SamVin-605-560x840.jpg" alt="BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE: 1 Of A Find Does Seven Vintage Looks" width="560" height="840" /></a></p>
<p><strong>The Mod Squad would have adopted me in a heartbeat in this Montaldo Op Art dress.  I fell in love with the digital print, it was so eye catching and well, trippy.  Bubbled sleeves and a high neck are hard to pull off without looking like Julie Andrews, but this psychedelic wonderland of a dress with slim cuts made it utterly chic.  I fell in love with the leather wedges and actually scooped them up for myself (sorry shoppers!). </strong></p>
<p>Montaldo&#8217;s Op Art Dress- $115<br />
Andrew Gellar white leather clutch with gold trim- $85<br />
Chunky multi-colored beaded necklace- $65<br />
Clegerie leather platform sandals- $88</p>
<p><a href="http://fashionindie.com/boutique-critique-1-of-a-find-does-seven-vintage-looks/samvin-103/" rel="attachment wp-att-196821"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-196821" title="SamVin-103" src="http://ficdn.fashionindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/SamVin-103-560x840.jpg" alt="BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE: 1 Of A Find Does Seven Vintage Looks" width="560" height="840" /></a></p>
<p><strong>I never thought I could pull off a Blair Waldorf headband until I found this gem of a velvet headband.  So sweet and a little schoolgirl, it matched perfectly with this lace dress from the 60&#8242;s. The chunky heeled shoes kept the look 100% vintage, and the hand painted wooden purse kept a touch of fantasy in the mix. </strong></p>
<p>1960&#8242;s burgundy lace dress- $98<br />
burgundy satin headband- $35<br />
1960s hand painted wooden lock purse- $135<br />
Chaos of London stacked black velvet shoes- $85</p>

<p>Here are a few pieces that can help you make a bow statement. The trick is to let the bow be the main attraction in the outfit and keep everything else minimal and simple.</p>

<p>There is the bow, and then there is the BOW. For all you bow lovers like me, I have the perfect dress brought to you by your favorite designer. This is a Marc by Marc Jacobs, dramatic textured twill dress, with a giant bow in front and zipper back. The price is not so bad either, it&#8217;s $568 and is available at <a href="http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2982745?cm_cat=datafeed&amp;cm_pla=dresses:women:dress&amp;cm_ite=marc_by_marc_jacobs_cotton_twill_bow_dress:228118&amp;cm_ven=pronto&amp;mr:referralID=6d47f0ae-750f-11dd-990b-000423bb4e79" target="_blank">Nordstrom</a>. So if anyone wants to get me an early wedding present, it would be kindly appreciated&#8230;</p>
