The Dinner & A Movie Date

This date is a classic one. It seems like going out for dinner and a movie is the type of date that had stood the test of the. If you’re smart you’ll do the movie before the dinner. (So you have at least something to discuss besides awkward small talk.) This is a semi casual date. you want to be relaxed but not too informal. A solid button up shirt and a pair of dark washed jeans create the perfect uniform. Try not to be too flashy and throw on an understated watch. Just because you’re wearing jeans does not mean it’s OK to wear your most raggedy tennis shoes. A pair of  smart and nondescript sneakers will work in lieu.

The Night On The Town Date

The Night On The Town Date is strictly reserved for the guys who are extremely cool and have contacts everywhere. They know where all the hottest restaurants and parties are and they are always invited to them. Everyone knows who you are so you’ll have to look fly when painting the town red with your date. Nothing says smooth like a sweet biker jacket and tee. Ditch the boring jeans and for for an interesting pair of trousers. A sleek pair of sneakers will help you stomp around the city comfortably while looking super cool at the same time. If you are the accessories type of guy then throw in of some statement jewelry like a necklace or bracelet.

How long ago did you start designing?

I’ve been designing for over 10 years but it started in high school when i became sort of obsessed with Bjork and her wardrobe; in particular the Hussein Chalayan paper outfits she was wearing. It really motivated me to want to make clothes. After that I started
making things out of those FedEx tyvek envelopes, embroidering, paper mache, coloring, laminating; it was fashion as art.
Was fashion something you were always interested in growing up?

When I was younger I thought I wanted to be an architect but it wasn’t until I went to a private catholic school my freshman year of high
school after being brought up in public school previously did I really realize how important my freedom of dress was. It was then I became more aware of my personal style and started becoming more knowledgeable and fascinated with designers through magazines like The Face and Harpers Bazaar. Also a huge influence was Japanese street culture.
How did people like Katy Perry, Sky Ferreira, M.I.A and Lady GaGa start to wear your clothes?

It’s always really exciting each time I see a musician or artist I admire performing in something I made. Some of them are my friends too
or friends of friends. If I don’t know the artist personally then there’s always just about one degree of separation between me and the
artist.  I’ve been dressing musicians for awhile now, actually the first person I made things for was Gwen Stefani when she was with No Doubt 10 years ago. I think word catches on with stylists who are familiar with your work and then you become known for dressing stylish
musicians and artists.
What was it like putting together a fashion show for LA fashion week? In the future do you hope to show in New York?

Fashion shows are a lot of fun although they are a lot of work and stress, but showing in New York in the future is definitely not out of
the question
Your designs exclusive to The Haus Of GaGa  in the telephone video were quite brilliant. What was that process like?

They hit me up a 2 days before the video and asked if I could make crime scene tape that was going to be scantily wrapped around GaGa’s
body for a scene. I thought the best way would be to print it on strips of lycra. I love how quick the turnout process is sometimes
What types of things inspire you while designing?

Colors, textures, shapes and music.

How did the collaboration with Forever 21 occur? Can you give us insight o some of the designs?

I had a mutual friend reach out to them and they got in touch with me and we set up a meeting and the rest is history. I’m really excited to
be their first official collaboration. The designs have a beauty and dripping theme running thru most of them, 9 women’s styles and 3 men’s as well.

Did you have a lot of creative freedom while designing the line?

Basically I presented them a plethora of ideas and we narrowed it down to the 12 that will be in the stores.
What does your personal style consist of?

A tank top, jeans, ankle boots and something Hermes is usually my uniform.

How do you feel about the whole blogosphere? Do you feel it is creating a positive or negative influence in the industry?

I think it’s great, it’s definitely moving news, thoughts, ideas, images etc. around quicker than magazines and television, but the best thing
is you can control what you want to immerse yourself in on the web 100 percent.

Do you have an idea of a particular person/muse when you’re designing a collection?

Not necessarily a person but more likely an object or piece of clothing.
Define the Brian Lichtenberg women and man?

Sexy

Is there anyone in the fashion world you would like to collaborate with?

Yes, some things are in the works.

SAY IT ISN’T SO!! As I was patrolling my blog roll instead of reading last night, I came upon some terrible news.  One of my favorite designers (and a Fashion Indie favorite) is making a collaboration that I’m afraid will ruin him for me.  WWD reported that the news is true, although Brian has yet to confirm (which I’m hoping means it isn’t true)

“A Forever 21 spokesperson confirmed that the collaboration was in the works and said an announcement would be made in the coming months.”

Regardless, I know that the Rodarte For Target collection was great, I know the H & M collaborations have been great…but as a corporation that is known in the fashion world for ripping off countless designers, I’m hoping that Brian Lichtenberg holds up his name, and signature ‘Brian’ play on designers (Brianel, Brian instead of Nike, ‘Lichteys’ instead of Mickeys), and doesn’t go down the cheap Forever 21 route and come up with some poorly made shoulder padded dresses that fall apart after you wear them once, and you see everyone and their sister wearing to the next frat party.

On the other hand, I’m not sure how they did it, but props to Forever 21 for actually being able to land a great designer for their collaboration…I’m guessing everyone else they ripped off previously turned them down.

Thoughts on this? Do you think I’m crazy?

We have known about this one for awhile now, but the video for 3OH!3′s next single Starstrukk featuring Katy Perry was released, and I’m totally diggin’ it! Besides the amazing Brian Lichtenberg dress that Katy wears in the fountain scene, the recently 25 year old singer is rocking a pretty hot leopard print dress as well.

1. Thong leotards over biker shorts- Wasn’t a good look when Kelly Kapowski from Saved By The Bell did it, and isn’t even a good look for 80s parties.

2. Shutter shades- I know once Kanye was spotted in these everyone went crazy over them, but in my opinion, shutter shades were never okay, and will never, ever be okay. They serve no purpose besides making you look like a douche.

3. Visors- I have a feeling that sooner or later, hipsters are going to think that grandma visors are ‘ironic.’ I’ll just put it out there now to save everyone the $5: they aren’t ironic, they’re ugly. 

4. Mesh- so not okay. Small mesh (like the Brian Lichtenberg or American Apparel dress) = good. Big mesh = this guy.

5. Crocheted tank tops or bath suit tops as shirts- Just plain ugly.

6. Tying up dress shirts (a la ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’)- This was cool for like, a day, but trying to be ‘sexy’ while being fifteen and in catholic school is not happening.

7. One size fits all shirts- I really don’t know who thought this was a good idea. These are the ugliest shirts I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

8. Guys in flared jeans/pants- I know this actually happens. I’ve been a witness to many guys still wearing flared jeans, most of the time girls’ jeans, but occasionally True Religion will make a pair of flares.  Note to all guys: if you’re going to wear girls jeans, at least get ones that look like they could belong to a guy. And also, this is not the 70s.

9. Dark lip liner- Beyond trashy. Seriously, what the hell

10. Scrunchies- I really, really, REALLY hope this isn’t happening.

Definitely not a look for the bashful.  Celebs have been spotted a few times now wearing perfectly matched dresses and leggings.  My mom used to always tell me to compliment, not match, but I think taking advice from Leighton Meester (at the MET Gala) may be a better option?

Since I got a Twitter account I’ve been randomly followed by a few different people each day.  Luckily, last week it was Radiant Jungle.  I noticed he was a photographer and clicked his link to his website, and was not only impressed by his crazy photos, but also his blog, complete with party photos, fashion opinion columns, and photographer recommendations.  But what I think is the most impressive thing about Radiant Jungle, or Zak Krevitt (formally), is how thought-out his photographs are for a seventeen-year-old. Let me say that again, this kid is 17.  I immediately emailed him and asked a few questions about his work:

FASHION INDIE: How did you get your start in photography?

RADIANT JUNGLE: I got my start when an ex of mine got his first SLR. We fooled around with it for a bit and I made some of my first stabs at party photography. But, that was short-lived and I didn’t start Radiant Jungle until about 6 months later. I had connections to using some old movie lighting equipment and for my first few shoots I used this old, awkward light equipment. Now I own my own stuff and can explore a lot more options.

FI: Where do you come up with your crazy concepts for shoots?

RJ: I do a lot of people watching. Since I was little I would always make up stories for the lives I would imagine people living.  Long drives to the city were always my favorite because you would see a lot of really interesting people on the way there. I like to take these made up stories and try to convey it through my photography.

FI: Where do you hope to take your photography next?

RJ: I’ve had my eye on fashion from day one. I do enjoy doing party-pic stuff but in the end  I want to be working in high fashion. I’m in talks right now with a couple designers (Brian Lichtenberg, Yotam Solomon) about the concepts we want to go with for a future shoot.

FI: What is your favorite thing about art/photography?

RJ: I love how art allows me to put my mind out there. Others can interpret my work however it may apply to them, and I love that. I’ve grown up in a family of artists, I really feel that may have influenced my view on the concept. I’ve always been encouraged to see art everywhere.

FI: Who are some of the best/most creative people you’ve worked with, or enjoyed working with the most?

RJ: The first photographer I worked with was Christoph Barthe, he was french and had really great ideas. He helped me start Radiant Jungle actually, but over that we realized our creative differences were pretty large. Working with Brittany Flickenger (from Paris Hilton’s my new BFF) was … well interesting. We showed up at her North hollywood apartment and she was still asleep. So the male model for the shoot and I went thrifting for a bit. Then she called us and we came over; she was still in her underwear and pajamas and was just dancing around her apartment. It was hilarious. Once she got ready though we had a great time shooting. She’s a really fun subject to shoot.

FI: What is your least favorite thing about it?

RJ: I hate how just about anyone with an SLR and a Myspace account can call themselves a photographer.  The field is becoming a bit over-saturated which has its pros and con’s. One perk is that there is amazing talent being produced by people that would never be able to get their name out there if it wasn’t for the advent of social networking sites. One name that comes to mind is Kris Kidd. He has amazing talent and he’s only 15, he’s very smart and has been extremely successful at getting attention through the internet.

FI: Any advice for hopeful amateurs out there?

RJ: Never take the camera away from your eye. There are a million amazing photographs happening every moment, try not to miss them.

As I sit here, staring at my failed attempt of an edgy college dorm transformation, I cannot help but imagine my future SoHo apartment or the decor of Vogue when I replace Anna Wintour. I’m planning on some enormous skylights, exposed brick walls, wood floors and an eclectic array of mix-matched furniture and art. For now, the grimy bathtub and excruciating fluorescent lighting will have to do, but who says a girl can’t plan ahead? I’ve started to gather inspiration from some of my favorite designers, models and writers, photographed by Todd Selby, in their homes and workspaces. Thanks to The Selby, who photographs “interesting people in creative spaces” I can live vicariously through others until I get my big break. Exploring a wide range of material use, Brian Lichtenberg fashions have hit the scene.
