Santigold

Santigold is performing tonight on your computer screen. Samsung Mobile presents a livestream concert to celebrate their 5 millionth Facebook fan. If you’ve ever seen Santigold perform, you know to expect super bass, crowd interaction and amazing dancing. The actual concert will be held at Irving Plaza but is a closed event. Gentleman Brawlers

Brooklyn’s Barclays a Boon for Borough Business

The new Barclays Center for the New Jersey Nets is set to open in September in downtown Brooklyn and it’s already drawing the eye of several prospective retailers.

Brands such as Lululemon, Y-3 and Intermix are said to be interested in developing in the neighborhood in anticipation of the spike in consumers from the Center’s sporting events, concerts and conventions. Leading the way is Adidas, which announced last month that it will be opening a 3,300-sq.-ft store in the Barclays Center that will sell official Nets merchandise.

The billion-dollar arena is expected to double rent prices for prime commercial real estate, and it’s only a matter of time before private real estate is affected as well. As Thomas Conoscenti, director of real estate and planning for the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, puts it, “The arena is really going to solidify downtown Brooklyn as a destination, not just for Brooklyn residents but the entire region.”

Once any neighborhood gets popular, rents skyrocket and gentrification sweeps through like an unrelenting tide. And this time the tide’s coming straight from the Jersey shore. Hunker down and pray for daylight, Brooklynites. [WWD, sub req'd]

City Cycling Chic: Terra Raincoats for Riders

Yuck, looks like the kind of day that’s going to rain all over a parading day of city cycling. The sky has turned to murk, and that means a mucked up outfit or a plastic poncho if you’re still planning on two-wheeling it to work. Bicycling has become so chic, what with its environmentally sound nature and efficiency for navigating the city, especially Brooklyn, but fresh rain gear for said cyclists has been a sad search. Which is why Yurika Nakazono and Marie Saeki did just what proper, frustrated New Yorkers should do. They created their own, well made and fit for a feminine body with a helmet: Terra New York.

What did you do for a raincoat before you created Terra? (and what flaws did you find?) Yurika Nakazono, whom is the creative director of the brand, and I [Marie Saeki, CEO] went through many non waterproof raincoats, and few [that were] waterproof but not that fashionable! I used to wear one from Muji, well done, very simple but we really wanted something more fun and stylish. It was hard to find something not casual; we did research, but really couldn't find anything. At the end, both Yurika and I, just gave up cycling when raining…until we made our own.

What do you wear on the rest of your body on your bike in the rain? When raining, underneath the Terra Lower East Side parka I'm wearing , Levi's jeans, Alice Ritter blouses (obsessed with them) or Marni tops. I'm never going out of my home without a scarf (love Hermès!). As for shoes, I just got the low rubber boots from Aigle. But soon I will switch for Terra New York, as we have a high heel boots in rubber for F/W 2012.

What about a helmet?? Bern! They do very cool helmets, I use the Brighton, customized with neon tapes.

What kind of bike can we see you riding?

I live in New York and have to park my bike in the street so, I have an old one that is very noisy, but no one will ever steal it!

INTERVIEW: William Okpo Sisters on Inspiration, Family & Guilty Pleasures

William Okpo is the brainchild of sisters Lizzy and Darlene Okpo for the contemporary, confident woman. Named as an ode to their father whose killer style has always been an inspiration to them, the Okpo sisters have garnered a lot of attention in the past year. The brand is sold at Opening Ceremony in NY and LA; they have become street style stars for their amazing wardrobe, accessories and long locks; and they recently teamed with Brook&Lyn to create a cape and pouch. We caught up with the Brooklyn-based design duo to find out what it’s like working with a family member, their current muse and guilty pleasures.

What inspired you to become designers?

Like most young people who couldn’t afford the latest and the greatest, we found a way to make our own out of whatever was available to us. From there, we felt a constant need to create what we didn’t see readily available.

What is it like working with your sister?

It’s a blessing. Everyone should work with their sister. It’s definitely a new relationship you have to adapt to, of course. We get to know a different side of each other, the business side. The best thing about it is we act as a strong force because we clearly understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, there are never any hard feelings.

Who is your muse at the moment?

All the young people putting their right foot forward and following their hearts. We need more leaders and innovators in this world. We’ve been noticing more and more young people taking advantage of this creative movement happening.

Hungover & Starving? It’s Brunchables to the Rescue!

It’s getting to be that time of day once again. Hungry? Neither are we (so chic), but we are really loving this faux commercial for Brunchables. Developed at Oscar Mayer‘s Brooklyn headquarters, this packaged meal is perfect for that special time between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays when you’re hungover and starving for some booze and locally purveyed calories. When breakfast is blah! and lunch is lame!, you need Brunchables to swoop in and rescue your tastebuds.

And with favorites like eggs benedict, pickled onion slaw and pouch of mimosa, the fun never ends!

Mother-Daughter Lingerie Ads: Chic or Creepy?

The Lake & Stars lingerie designers Nikki Dekker and Maayan Zilberman are seemingly stirring the pot with their Fall/Winter 2011 campaign. A mother and daughter duo move in close for the photos, but people are saying it’s a little too close for comfort. Zilberman chose the women for the ads, her neighbors in Brooklyn, after seeing them constantly interact with a loving and tender manner. Right wing teetotalers like Fox News of course have their panties in a bunch over the whole thing, but we don’t understand why. It took a minute to get used to, but we’re kind of actually loving it. And DUH, they are both stunning.

5 Mens Plaid Shirts That Don’t Scream “Hipster”

A couple years ago plaid shirts came back with a vengeance. Many thought it was another trend but it seems these patterned tops are here to stay and we’ve picked a few that you won’t be embarrassed to wear all the time.

I would describe my current look today as pretentious hipster. (I write this article as I sit in the office wearing a overly bleached tee, over-sized plaid shirt, cutoffs, combat boots and calf high dress socks.) That being said many people don’t like the term “hipster” so we decided to scrounge up 5 mens shirts that could be considered as such if worn one way but in actually can be styled quite versatile.

SWEET TREAT OF THE WEEK: Good Batch Stroopwafel Ice Cream Sandwich

I would rather call this delectable-looking treat a sandWISH instead of ‘wich because I am dreaming of it right now. From the Good Batch at Williamsburg’s weekly Smorgasburg market, these mouth-watering, heat-relief treats are a steal at $5 a piece.

Dutch stroopwafels are skinny (hooray!) waffle cookies with a caramel filling. The Good Batch adds divine flavors of ice cream, like salted caramel and Frangelico ganache, from Adirondack Creamery. Cheap Eats & Outfit Splurges: Brooklyn Weekend

One of our favorite reads at FashionIndie, New York Magazine, just came out with its “Cheap Eats” issue, including 20 mouthwatering pages with the best food under $25 in New York City. Being in fashion and all, we frivolously spend most of our hard-earned cash on clothing and accessories. But that doesn’t mean we resort to street dogs and bad pizza (ewww). Over the course of three days, we will show you where you can get a cheap tasty bite while wearing the outfit you splurged on. Today, a weekend in Brooklyn.

A Moment in The Limelight

Those who now attend the gothic church on the corner of 6th Avenue and 20th Street probably pray to the gods of fashion. For the past year it has been the home of The Limelight Marketplace, a maze of over 60 local shops selling everything from artisan crafted jewelry to artisan craft cheese. And jeans, flip flops and fast trends as well. And art. And haircuts. And various tchotchkes. Perhaps they were praying for something a little less scatterbrained. To that end, Limelight owner Jack Manashe has terminated most of his selling tenants as he redefines the place as a department store.

Manashe has put $4 million into the transformation that is already well underway. He’s hired the former buyer of Boogies in Aspen to restock his store, and has gutted the main lobby.

Here is what it looked like just a few short months ago. It was essentially a valley of kiosks. BEFORE:

Here, let me take you on a brief tour of its three levels. There are nooks and crannies at every turn to get lost in, places I haven’t discovered yet. And as of this moment, rooms that are vacant from all of the retailers that were forced to evacuate.

Okay, catch your breath.

Out of the whole place, one that will certainly stay is Old Hollywood. With another location in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, this shop is one of the main draws for The Limelight Marketplace, and thus is one of the lucky few shops to remain through the turnover. Storeowner Tiffany Porter began her store by selling mostly vintage pieces, but now she features a whole host of new designers. Her most popular jewelry designer is Kaoru, a meticulous Japanese designer. Among dozens of the other designers she carries, Pendleton has been flying off her shelves. The old world quality of her display and the pieces within bring a sense of timeless rusticity to the space. She is very relieved that there is longer a giant winged statue from the former candy store below, blocking her 2nd story shop from eyeshot. (see below)

A history lesson on the Church of Fashion:

It opened as a Catholic Church in 1853 to much architectural acclaim, but then was decommissioned when the neighborhood died by the start of the 1970s. It then became a much-needed mid-seventies drug rehab center. Turns out, those people didn’t need or want the rehab, because it was bought by club owner Peter Gatien and christened The Limelight in 1983. Then 1996, a party promoter allegedly brutally murdered a drug dealer, which spawned the 2003 Macaulay Culkin/Seth Green movie The Party Monster. After opening and closing at the police mandate, the club officially closed and reopened in 2003 under the name Avalon. That party ended in 2007 and the space became home to random sample sales, and probably homeless people. Then in May of 2010, it was converted into The Limelight Marketplace. And it changes shapes again.

Best of luck to Jack Manashe. He’s got a 20 year lease on the place, and quite a house to clean.

We love everything about classic design – the uber-high quality, the meticulous craftmanship, the luxurious materials – not to mention the amazing stories that come with a Lanvin ball gown that is four decades old! Every outfit tells a different story, and like we always say, the best stories are the ones told in designer.

This Boutique Critique is about the amazing designer vintage store, 1 Of A Find. Curator and self-professed shopaholic Honey Moon goes on buying trips all over the world seeking out beautiful, unique, impossible-to-get-your-hands-on Hermes, Chanel, Gucci, Lacroix, and Lanvin to satisfy her international clientele. She used me as a Barbie doll and transported me into worlds I only dream of. Best part? Her prices are as unique as her collection, so we definitely recommend scooting over to her Brooklyn location asap. Check out all our amazing finds after the jump.

This gown was to DIE for. It caught my eye immediately as a dress made for the 1950′s movies I play out in my head. When Anna Wintour extends me a VIP invitation to the Met Gala, I will surely be sporting something like this on the red carpet.

You can’t do Brooklyn vintage without channeling a little inner hipster. These Dior shoes (with the angelic sweet bows), vintage Levi’s and amazing seuqin blouse kept the look casual but party ready. A python bag and flat brimmed hat made me look MUCH cooler than I am.

The Mod Squad would have adopted me in a heartbeat in this Montaldo Op Art dress. I fell in love with the digital print, it was so eye catching and well, trippy. Bubbled sleeves and a high neck are hard to pull off without looking like Julie Andrews, but this psychedelic wonderland of a dress with slim cuts made it utterly chic. I fell in love with the leather wedges and actually scooped them up for myself (sorry shoppers!).

I never thought I could pull off a Blair Waldorf headband until I found this gem of a velvet headband. So sweet and a little schoolgirl, it matched perfectly with this lace dress from the 60′s. The chunky heeled shoes kept the look 100% vintage, and the hand painted wooden purse kept a touch of fantasy in the mix.

LOOK THREE: Abstract Python Warrior

The Shoulder Piece: Fannie Schiavoni, $825

This look began with my love of the chain mail shoulder piece. The metal mesh moves like water in my hand and makes me feel invincible when strapped around my body. Its creator Fannie Schiavoni hand makes each piece in her studion in London, and keeps the color of her materials muted so that she can focus purely on the shape and clean lines. She has named this collection “Lucy in the Sky”, evoking a psychedelic yet other worldly feeling.

The (non) Body Suit: Calla Paris, Leggings, $174, Tank, $98

My first instinct to match the brilliance of the shoulder scene-stealer was an abstract printed dress by Calla Paris. Calla Haynes is a Canadian-born, Paris based designer with a five-year training history with Olivier Theyskens and a serious knack for tight prints. Début had the pattern in a fierce little itty bitty dress (which I spotted first). That mini thing, which being one of the only pieces left over from Fall 2010, did not come in my size, and thus did not even contain half of one of my boob. But I needed an outfit to form the foundation of that glorious shoulder piece. So it occurred to me to try the olive printed stirrup tights with the matching tank. Alone and together I was in love. The leggings have a nearly 3-inch sturdy black elastic waistband that hugs and sucks in as the tank tucks in to form a bodysuit.

The Skirt: Whit, $225

A bodysuit is so right for so many reasons. However, it didn’t feel 100% right at the moment; there had to be another layer, if not to cover more stunning items in Début, then to cover some of my winter weight… With that came this military green scoop pocket skirt by Whit, a line launched by Phoenix native Whitney Pozgay. With a studio Brooklyn and experience with Kate Spade, Three Asfour and Steven Alan, she has created a line founded in imagery as diverse as Keith Haring and ice pops.

The Top 10 Vintage Haunts In NYC That Won’t Rob You Blind

I have to sympathize with New Yorkers who don’t know how to thrift. If you’re paying $100 for a no-name sundress or $80 for Doc Martens riddled with holes, you’re doing a poor job. As a child born and bred in the Midwest, I learned that 80s beaded silk evening gowns should cost $15 and vintage Fendi bags should only set you back $30. So in a city of extremely overpriced vintage stores, what’s a girl (or guy) to do? Take it from the master and check out my top 10 vintage spots in New York City where you can get the best merchandise for the lowest prices.

1. Loveday 31, Astoria
Owner and curator Ivona Bilicic knows her stuff – she used to be a buyer at famous rip-off Manhattan vintage store Screaming Mimi’s. But the merchandise at Loveday 31 is far from overpriced and much more carefully selected. Eccentric metallic shirts from the 80s share a rack with silk Givenchy shirts and Prada dresses. Uniquely shaped vintage bags are shown among locally designed jewelry and antique brooches. I recently bought a black, intricately knit shirt with metallic silver threads and 7-inch long fringe for $40.

2. Beacon’s Closet, Williamsburg & Park Slope
Perhaps the most well-known local Brooklyn thrift store chain, Beacon’s Closet has something for everyone. Both locations have their fine points: the more-crowded Williamsburg store has about four times the merchandise ranging from beat-up tees to Pucci pumps while the slightly more refined selection at Park Slope requires less digging and waiting. Some of my best buys include an $18 Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater and $18 brand new Betseyville shoes.

3. Buffalo Exchange, Williamsburg
You won’t find a ton of vintage merchandise at Buffalo Exchange, but you might come across some cool new digs along the way. Designer denim for men and women usually costs less than $20 and a brand new chunky necklace will set you back about $8. There are great vintage finds too, like a pair of Marc Jacobs sandals I bought for $24 a couple years ago.

4. Housing Works, Upper East Side
Where do all of the wealthy UES women take their Ferragamos and Pradas when they don’t want them any more? Housing Works, of course. In my opinion, this location is the best of the 10 retail stores around the city. There aren’t a million downtown vintage hunters in your face, and the merchandise comes straight from Park and Madison Avenues. It also has the best vintage jewelry selection - I have at least a dozen pieces from my summer living in the same neighborhood.

5. Monk Vintage, Williamsburg
Where can you buy a rainbow striped bow tie, cummerbund and pocket square matching set? Monk Vintage in Brooklyn has about 10 for you to choose from. From the tutus suspended from the ceiling to mounds of vintage jewelry, you will find super fun and unique vintage pieces here. Dresses run from around $25 – $40 while a full suit will cost you about $100. Everything is in pretty good condition and the store is small, so you won’t spend hours looking for an outfit. The peach Polo Ralph Lauren Western shirt I got for $35 is still one of my favorites.

6. Goodwill, Chelsea
Of all the Goodwills in the city, why this one? Are the workers nicer? Absolutely not, but the selection is all that. This fairly new outlet isn’t too crowded, but it is fairly organized. If you’re familiar with Goodwill, expect all of the same prices and merchandise categories. Last week, I found a leather Coach computer bag in good condition for $20.

7. Vintage Thrift, Gramercy
From Manolos to mink throw pillows, this store literally has everything. You can get a stack of records with your dining room table and Italian designer ties with a retro KitchenAid mixer. Not only has Vintage Thrift been named Zagat’s #1 NYC thrift store four years in a row, profits go to The United Jewish Council of the East Side.

8. Viceversa, Williamsburg
Maybe the most overlooked Williamsburg thrift store, Viceversa is definitely worth your time. Stocked with equal parts men’s and women’s apparel, you can find everything from red cowboy boots to sequined muumuus. Prices here are dynamite – you can snag a fur coat for as little as $40. I bought an 80s rainbow sequin dress for $20 last year; I recently saw the same exact dress on Nasty Gal retailing for more than $200.

9. The Antiques Garage, Chelsea
Lauren from Corvus Noir introduced me to The Antiques Garage last summer when I interviewed her for FashionIndie. This place is insane. From 9 am – 5 pm every Saturday and Sunday, you can walk through this concrete jungle of every antique imaginable. It can be a little overwhelming, so take it slow – one table at a time. I bought a gorgeous leather, color-block bag with a chain strap for $10 the last time I was there.

10. No Relation Vintage, East Village
Nestled among the dozens of nail salons and pizzerias on First Avenue, No Relation Vintage is a rare gem. Little nooks throughout the store hold specifics like shoes or sundresses while scarves sit in a basket by the register, waiting to be impulsed purchased. In true East Village fashion, you won’t find a shortage of leather jackets or distressed band tees. Many a silk scarf from this old school thrift store hangs in my apartment.

INTERVIEW: Keiko Lynn, Brooklyn Blogger & New Face of R&Em Accessories

Just to prove further that bloggers are taking over the world, Brooklyn-based blogger Keiko Lynn is the face of hot new brand R&Em Accessories. All of the bags are vegan and priced at $110 or less, a treat for girls who want to give their wallet a break. The collection launched yesterday at Macy‘s Herald Square where I got a chance to chat with Keiko about the R&Em girl.

Who is the R&Em girl?
R&Em stands for Remy and Emmy who are two personalities representing two different sides of the everyday girl. Remy is a world traveler – she is chic with an uptown vibe. Emmy is the all-American girl next door who is laid-back and just loves to have a good time. The line is budget-friendly, so it resonates with people like me who live in the city and have very tight budgets but still like to be chic and keep up with the trends.

How does it feel to be the face of this great new accessories line?
It’s crazy! It is so flattering to be the face of R&Em, but there is a part of me that says ‘It’s weird – I’m not a model, I’m not a celebrity.’ But that’s what this line is about, regular girls who love great style. So that’s what I am, the girl next door from Brooklyn.

I love your outfit, what are you wearing today?
I am wearing a vintage skirt, Jessica Simpson platforms, Hue tights, Postlapsaria lace jacket (Keiko’s own label), Coach leather jacket and an R&Em Woodstock bag, my favorite of the collection.

What makes the Woodstock bag your favorite of the collection?
All of the bags are named after musical influences. This is a classic satchel but with the updated zipper and studs. The colorway is really unexpected, a blush tone with chocolate edges. I love that you can sling it across you body or use the little handles and throw it on your arm. It’s very versatile and definitely my favorite.

Mac and I got our photo taken with the tall and graceful Keiko. Wish we would have worn our big girl shoes!

Hamansutra is the definition of documenting the world into a garment. Haman the designer, a man on a different level of energy and passion for both his new creations and the streets of New York City really surprises you with the materials and effects. Although most of his collections aren’t categorized by season, to look through these collections you have a key to enter a great mind! Let’s just say you have to have a lot of confidence to rock these seductive pieces just right.

And all of us 718 residents are just so proud. Brownstoner spotted Anna Wintour browsing the Gifted Holiday Market at One Hanson Place yesterday. Maybe fried chicken and waffles at Buttermilk Channel is next for the Vogue queen. Glad I wasn’t the only one doing last-minute Christmas shopping.

Rebecca Minkoff To Open Her Own Store

Last night, Fashionista.com hosted a panel of New York based designers and retailers who spoke about their entry into the fashion industry, and how they’re surviving. Rebecca Minkoff was like the class president — she’s come along way since interning and she announced last night that she’s actively looking for a space for her own store.

“We have the clothes and shoes and the bags so we’re ready. But it won’t just be my stuff…there’ll be things I love that I find on my travels,” she explained. “It’s very exciting for me because I get to be a buyer now!”

Based on the widespread popularity of her bags we’d peg her for the Soho or West Village type, but like pointed out last night, she likes to do things differently. (She used to go on the Purse Forum years ago, before blogs were a blip on anyone’s radar, and interact with her customers.) So we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled in the East Village, or even Brooklyn.

Like This Is the Worst Thing That’s Happened in a Brooklyn Library

“Brooklyn Law School officials rented Diesel its library expecting a tasteful photo shoot for a jeans ad…” You know, for a law school, you would have thought they would have done their research. Let’s take a look at some of Diesel’s more tasteful ad campaigns, shall we?

Interim Dean, Michael Gerber soiled his diaper when he shot off an email claiming to be “shocked and mortified as you must be by these photographs.” He was apparently misled by those tricky, fast-talking Diesel people who assured him that “the photos would be in good taste.”

Refresh my drink, but aren’t lawyers the ones who are supposed to do the misleading? Sounds like some Interim Dean got schooled.

But Gerber’s story doesn’t quite hold up. BLS’s events director, Chris Gibbons was present at the shoot mind you. And a quick Google search for Diesel ads would have turned up these paragons of virtue:

Closing argument: Brooklyn Law School got a bunch of money to allow Diesel to shoot there, but then changed their tune once the ad campaign debuted. BLS basically just gave a lesson on how to execute a bait and switch. And I hope everyone was paying attention because there will be a pop quiz.

MTV TJ Finalist Gabi fashions a plus size fashion show on the Brooklyn Bridge

Please welcome guest contributor, stylist Steffany Allen! After attending the MTV TJ Challenge, she recaps her experiences of the evening’s event!

With three days to plan and 30 minutes to execute, the final challenge for the MTV Twitter Jockey involved one of the plus size community’s own Gabi, of Young, Fat, and Fabulous.

I met @gabifresh, creator of the blog Young Fat and Fabulous and the MTV crew on the Brooklyn Bridge for the MTV TJ (Twitter Jockey) Meet Up challenge! There are now 5 finalists in the competition and their challenge was to get as many people as possible to meet in one location for an event they were hosting. Gabi’s Meet UP location was the iconic Brooklyn Bridge for a Plus Size fashion show! Can you imagine!? Well it was fabulous!!

Meeting Gabi was a true delight. She was all smiles as she greeted fans that came out in support of her becoming the first MTV-TJ. All the fans (including myself) had hearts drawn on their hands in solidarity for Gabi. With the beautiful Brooklyn skyline in the background, the evening sun and the warm summer breeze (which got strong at times), the vibe was set for a hot Plus Size Fashion Show.

We cheered on as the models strutted their stuff down the runway in clothing from Torrid. There were casual dresses, fun party tops, bustiers, and jeans. The looks were easy, casual, fun, and perfect for a nice summer evening! Some of the featured models were Mia Amber, my fave Plus model sisters, Stacey and Shannon Hiett, Jeannie Ferguson, Allison McGevna, Danielle Jackson and Christina Mendez. One of my cool moments was when I loaned my personal shoes to Christina so she could walk the runway!! That was kind of FAB!

After the show, the attention was turned on to the fans for a best dressed contest! Several ladies from the crowd hit the runway in their best looks for a prize of $100 cash! All the looks were on point, but there could only be one winner, and that was (my friend) Michelle Wells!! She kept it chic and simple with a basic white tank t-shirt, denim vest, black skirt, and animal print flats. Classic never fails!

As the sun was going down and the networking buzzed on, Gabi took pictures and thanked her fans for showing up in support. I hope @gabifresh wins the position of MTV-TJ and represents strong for the curvy girls. We will find out Sunday night at 9pm on MTV when they announce the winner.

All You Sex And The City Fans, Sarah Jessica Parker Is Taking On Brooklyn!

If anyone was ever wondering what would happen if all four Sex and the City women pulled a Miranda and moved to Brooklyn, you’ll soon find out! No, it’s not a Sex and the City spinoff, and the only Sex and the City actress in it is Sarah Jessica, but you never know, it could work.

Based on the book Prospect Park West written by Amy Sohn, a new HBO series is being developed called Sex and the Stroller Set. The show follows around four different women who live in Brooklyn as they manage kids, husbands, work, and I’m sure a ton more. BOUTIQUE CRITIQUE Cozbi of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn

Since I started this blog, I’ve been lucky enough to visit a lot of small boutiques, meet their owners and talk clothes and fashion. My recent trip to New York was no different. My goal was to find a really unique, small, and out of the way cool boutique and only spend money on clothing that I felt I couldn’t find anywhere except at this store and only in New York.

On my first day out, thanks to one of my oldest friends Michelle, I found the snowflake of boutiques in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn called Cozbi. As we walked in, we were greeted by the owner, Cozbi A. Cabrera.

Cabrera is a tall, statuesque, dark-skinned beauty. She was wearing one of her own creations, the “must have” dress for the summer season; made of white eyelet, under which she wore a soft cotton white slip. I was taken.

Her clothes are the ultimate in classical femininity. The designs are sexy because they are cut and tailored to fit a woman’s body perfectly. All handmade in Brooklyn. Most of her dresses are in either Jackie Onassis style or shift dresses in prints as bold as Pucci, but with a distinctly African twist.

I tried things on, and asked her to hold my favorites. I needed to think. We went back to Michelle’s apartment to check the Cozbi website. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. She began her career making handmade collectible cloth dolls called Muñecas; dolls in Spanish. The dolls are collectors favorites and have been featured on Oprah. Her heritage is Honduran. She is the illustrator of the picture book Beauty, Her Basket which Publishers Weekly called “a quiet treasure” in a starred review.

After much debate, calls to my fashion guru Jamie, many hours of shopping/shmying around Brooklyn, the lower East side, NoLita and Soho, I ended up back where I started. I bought a dress at Cozbi. It fits like a glove. It’s one-of-a-kind. It makes me feel good to support women like Cozbi Cabrera. I wish I lived closer. My husband is probably glad that we don’t.

Designer Discovery: Tilly Bloom

Born and raised in Scotland, Tilly Bloom is one designer we can’t seem to get enough of. Grabbing her inspiration from Scottish slang and Victorian culture, Tilly at one with the whimsy created by her conversational jewelry. Now a Brooklyn native, Tilly is spreading her gifts with a collection of earrings, necklaces and broaches that turn any outfit into a work of art.

If you thought we were over the weird baby name thing, you’re in for a sweet surprise. A New Zealand family court has ordered a 9-year-old girl to undergo a name change. Painful process..I know. The little girl named Talula Does The Hula felt close to her roots from native Hawaii until the court had to interferre. “It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap,” says the concerned court. Thankfully someone got the idea!

Along with the order of the name change several names were band from the faces of innocence including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit. Sadly, the number 16, Bus Shelter and Violence are still permitted. Well, at least it’s a start.

Let’s get real, this is becoming ridiculous! With names like Pilot Inspektor and Camera, kids in the next generation are sure to be jumping off cliffs for the ultimate plunge. Someone needs to start thinking about these kids. Or at least keep them under watch. I certainly don’t know what it’s like to walk around as a fruit and I would never wish that upon anyone. When a kid grows up and asks why he’s named Brooklyn and the answer is because that’s where he was conceived, it’s a suicide waiting to happen. Come on everyone, let’s try and keep the parents away from the cocktails.

Real World: Brooklyn. Hell to the YEAH!!!

Has casting started for this yet? Real World will be filmed in Brooklyn next season. That’s right folks. New York is out, Brooklyn is in. I hope they film this in Williamsburg or better yet DUMBO (that’s were we live) and hopefully they cast me, cause I own this bitch.

I know everyone will be hating on this cause hipsters suck, blah, blah, blah. But I’m just glad my borough is getting some love. I’m sure the show will focus around bloggers, cause there really is no better career in Brooklyn. Well, there is always selling rocks, but that’s way to Jay Z for my tastes.
