Opening Ceremony to Debut a Magazine in August

Everyone always says print is a dying medium, but it seems to be evolving just fine as magazines become more of a collector’s item rather than a monthly offering. Opening Ceremony is naturally hip to the trend and is launching a collectible fashion and culture magazine this August called OC Annual.

Each issue of OC Annual will carry a theme with August’s debut issue focusing on sports in honor of The Olympics and featuring the work of photographers Bruce Weber, Walter Pfeiffer, Todd Cole and Tim Barber.

Opening Ceremony’s co-founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon plan on publishing only 30,000 copies of the mag with the aim of creating “a collectible publication for a new generation, something beautiful and special…that will appeal to kids in Nebraska as much as industry people.”

Also debuting this year is a commemorative book from Rizzoli celebrating the store’s 10 year anniversary with contributions from Terry Richardson, Chloë Sevigny, Alexander Wang, M.I.A. and Sally Singer among others. [WWD]

This Male Model Humpday, whip out the leash ’cause we’re taking it to the dog park with some shirtless boys and their furry, four-legged friends.

Introducing “CR”: Carine Roitfeld’s New Magazine

Editirix extraordinaire Carine Rotifeld has started spilling the beans on her new biannual magazine, officially called CR Fashion Book. Describing it as a “celebration of fashion and creativity,” each issue will be centered around a theme and feature established and emerging talents both in front of and behind the camera.

However, don’t expect to see Mario Testino‘s work in the pages of CR. The duo worked together for decades on The Face and later for Vogue Paris, but since he’s contractually obligated to Vogue, Testino is a no no. But that doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of talent. For the first issue’s mock-up, Argentinian photographer Sebastian Faena captured a topless — this is Carine after all — Kati Nescher while Bruce Weber shot Patti Smith in all her Miss Havisham glory.

In addition to scouting new talent, Roitfeld is being more hands-on than ever before, taking meetings with advertisers like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Cartier for the first time in her career. And according to her they were “very receptive and eager to participate.” Though carrying over 100 ad pages, ads in CR won’t look like other fashion mags since it will reportedly only carry spreads and have no front-of-book content — that will be reserved for the online component.

The fashion book will also only have longer-format articles, published in the writer’s original language — whatever that may be — with translations in the back. In her mock-up, Roitfeld had articles written in Arabic, Japanese and Russian, although CR itself is an English publication with offices located in The Standard hotel.

Carine insists that this new magazine of hers is in no way a form of revenge to her former bosses at Condé Nast, saying, “Vogue is a very beautiful magazine, an institution, and I learned so much working there. You can’t put yourself into competition with a magazine like Vogue; you have to create something new, something different.” She added, “It’s time to find something new, something fresh — for me and for the readers…I find that some people in fashion are so blasé. Fashion has to be fun”

Roitfeld will bring her trademark irreverence to styling photoshoots, which she admits “will always be edgy.” She’s trying to find new ways to push the envelope, not by being “safer” but rather just “different,” explaining, “Maybe it will be more mental than physical.”

CR Fashion Book‘s first issue will have 288 pages at a cover price of $9.95, with a publication of 50,000 copies, mostly in Europe but also including the U.S. and Asia. And when Carine’s not busy working on that, she’ll have a host of other projects keeping her busy, such as styling campaigns for Max Mara and Chanel, musing for Givenchy‘s Riccardo Tisci and then there’s a full-length documentary on her slated for 2013 by Fabien Constant.

So I think it’s safe to say leaving French Vogue was the best thing to happen to Carine Roitfeld. [WWD]

Well, this was bound to happen eventually. Despite repeated warnings, someone has finally taken a massive gulp from the Kristen Stewart punch bowl and has decided to hire the sometime actress as the star of a campaign. But why did it have to be you, Nicolas Ghesquière? Why did it have to be you?

Balenciaga has tapped Bella Swan as the face of an as-yet-unnamed fragrance launching this fall. Well, Nic, what do you have to say for yourself?

“Kristen embodies the modernity of the new Balenciaga fragrance with her unique sensibility and intelligence,” the designer told WWD. “From her early appearance in Panic Room to her independent choice of Welcome to the Rileys, I’ve always sensed her progressive character. In 2006, I invited her to appear in a project shot by Bruce Weber. Since then, I’ve always wished to collaborate with her further, knowing that she shares the radical spirit of Balenciaga.”

Peak into the 2012 Pirelli Calendar by Mario Sorrenti

Over in the no-man’s land known as The Armory on the far east side of Manhattan, media from around the world gathered for the official launch of the 2012 Pirelli Calendar. Photographer Mario Sorrenti and models Natasha Poly, Joan Smalls, Isabeli Fontana and actress Rinko Kikuchi were also on hand to fête the 39th edition of the portfolio.

Sorrenti is actually the first Italian to photograph the Pirelli Calendar, whose past lensmen have included Herb Ritts (1994, 1999), Richard Avedon (1995, 1997), Bruce Weber (1998, 2003), Annie Leibovitz (2000), Mario Testino (2001), Peter Lindbergh (1996, 2002), Patrick Demarchelier (2005, 2008), Mert and Marcus (2006), Inez and Vinoodh (2007), Terry Richardson (2010) and last year, Karl Lagerfeld.

For the shoot in Corsica, Sorrenti chose mostly women with whom he had previously worked, including supermodel among supermodels Kate Moss, whom the photographer has known for some 20 years — the two worked together on the iconic Calvin Klein “Obsession” campaign when Sorrenti was just 21 and Moss was practically still in diapers. In the “Making of ” short film that preceded a Q&A with Sorrenti, he remarked that he “couldn’t do this without her.”

The Tracks of Hailee Steinfeld’s Tears: Teen Starlet’s “Irresponsible” Miu Miu Ad Banned

It’s not easy being Hailee Steinfeld. Sure, being prematurely gorgeous and precociously talented, earning an Oscar nomination while barely in high school, having designers clamor to dress you for the red carpet and place you in their ad campaigns seems like a dream. And for all intents and purposes it is. But leave it to the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority to rain all over the young actress’ somnambulant parade.

The 14-year-old Steinfeld is seen sitting on a railroad track, wiping away what appears to be tears, in this image from Miu Miu‘s fall 2011 campaign, shot by Bruce Weber. Following their ban on fellow underaged starlet Dakota Fanning‘s “sexually provocative” ad for Marc Jacobs‘ “Oh Lola!” fragrance, the ASA has deemed the Miu Miu ad “irresponsible” for depicting a child in an unsafe location.

Parent company Prada argues that the allegedly offensive photos is ”part of a serious, high-fashion campaign” and “based on the set of an imaginary film,” adding that Steinfeld ”could have easily moved from where she was sitting because she was not restrained in any way.” But considering her age, the ASA is standing their moral-high ground. Lady Gaga Covers Visionaire 61, Officially the World’s Largest Magazine

Flopping onto Visionaire #61′s 5 ft x 7ft cover — front and back — is an oil-slicked, mermaid-tailed Lady Gaga, photographed by Inez and Vinoodh. The issue is certified by Guinness — and we’re not talking Daphne — as the world’s largest magazine.

The deluxe 5×7 edition runs a cool $1500 but if you don’t feel like breaking the bank, the standard edition — at 3 ft x 5 ft — is only a measly $375. The historic issue features work from Bruce Weber, the Stevens (Klein and Meisel), Mario Sorrenti, Karl Lagerfeld and a cadre of other artists and photographers given, as Visionaire puts it, “the forum to take their visions to a massive scale.”

So who wants to go halfsies on the deluxe edition? The standard edition is nice and all, but since the theme of the issue is “Larger than Life,” you might as well go big or go home. [Visionaire]

Emmanuelle Alt is writing her own ticket for VOGUE Paris. I was not expecting a fundamental change in the Editorial Direction being that she has been the Fashion Director of the magazine for over ten years and collaborating with Carine Roitfeld. Thus the assumption that there would be little change from the status quo. However, the April 2011 issue of VOGUE Paris gives a clear new direction; bye bye porno chic, provocation, unjustified nudity, welcome softness, lifestyle, casual clothing. Emmanuelle’s approach is more consensual and obviously more commercial, which the fashion customer might find more accessible.

I want to show in French Vogue more and more a lot of clothes … It’s a different point of view, but nobody gave me a mission to change it or make it more commercial. she stressed in her WWD’s interview

Her vision of fashion is also conditioned by the choice of photographer she has decided to collaborate with and thus don’t expect any radical changes in those she has already worked with.

I want to keep the quality, the photographers we work with—David Sims, Mert and Marcus, Mario Testino, and Bruce Weber. I don’t think there should be radical changes. The magazine should still be chic and sophisticated. VOGUE.com interview

There has been one huge surprise however… The Return of Hans Feurer in VOGUE Paris is great news and a welcome change.

Hans Feurer’s style is easily recognizable:

Outdoor shoots, long lenses, grainy film aspect, blurred background, sharp on the model (bokeh effect), sunrise or sunset light and often with the introduction of back light and flare.

This style was in “VOGUE” in the 70′s and 80′s and has come back in to fashion since certain internet bloggers started to photograph street fashion a few years ago. The styling often associated with his photography is ethnic, tribal in wildly natural spaces. However, he can express himself in a more urban environment as he did recently in French VOGUE with Supermodel Anja Rubik.

Feurer, a highly renowned fashion photographer in the 70s and 80s, is Swiss born and studied photography in London. In the ’60s, he became a photographer for British Vogue, Vogue Paris, US Vogue, Marie Claire, French Elle… He photographed most of the major supermodels from Claudia Schiffer to Laetitia Casta with Yasmeen Ghauri, Christy Turlington… He launched Amber Valletta in French Elle Magazine.

Who do you dream to photograph?

- I had the chance to work with the most beautiful women in the world from Pat Cleveland, Christy Turlington to Stephanie Seymour… Kate Moss is the only one that I haven’t photographed. Excerpt of his interview in the Contributor Section of French VOGUE April 2011.

I would add “so Far”… , but I have the feeling that with his statement in the Contributor Section of the magazine, this omission will be repaired quickly enough.

In the early 60′s, he was assisted by French Photographer Patrick Demarchelier. Hans Feurer is also renowned for his collaboration with Kenzo for several of their Ad Campaigns in the 70′s and 80′s and was well known for his shooting of lingerie and swimsuits in a beach environment. In 1974, he directed the famous Pirelli Calendar.

Over the past few years Hans Feurer is back on track with magazines the likes of Numéro, I-D and VOGUE China, etc…

I really appreciate the fact that Emmanuelle Alt went for the original “Real Deal” photographer rather than one of the numerous copies amongst the younger fashion photographers emulating his and Eddy Kohli‘s style.

Abercrombie Fires Male Model for Eating a Croissant

Work as a sales person at Abercrombie and you might get bed bugs, work as a model and you might get an eating disorder. These rock hard abs don’t come cheap…

The New York Post reports that the financially troubled brand recently fired a model off their shoot when he was caught eating a croissant. 30 male and female were recently hired for a Montauk based shot with famed photog Bruce Weber. The girls were apparently paid $2500 and dudes $1500 for a weeklong shoot that included 13-hour work days. In addition they were given $13-a-day meal stipends which doesn’t buy much eating in the Hamptons.

The Post reports that the job was so strict that Belgian model Florian Van Bael got kicked off for eating a croissant. Considering that Abercrombie is already in the shitter for racist hiring practices and bed bugs, I can’t imagine encouraging eating disorders is a smart move for the brand that just seems to continue to alienate shoppers. What’s next, sweatshop labor?

In the 90′s Bruce Weber introduced us to the Lane & Kyle Carlson, twin brothers who weren’t afraid to reveal it all to sell some denim and rugby shirts in A&F Quarterly. Ten years later, one of the brothers is back with a new look and interest in another sport. NSFW photos after the jump.

It’s hard to believe but this is Lane Carlson. It’s been over 10 years an he’s back to modeling, this time for a soccer apparel. His hair is longer and he’s got a mustache, but it’s the same old Lane. Wonder what his brothers been up to?

I lerved Merle Ginsberg before she did Ru Paul's Drag Race. She originated who was fierce in the W days.

My friend Merle Ginsberg, whom I have known since her W magazine days…when W meant something…is currently in Israel covering the fashion scene, doing a few speaking engagements and ogling the hot Israeli men, no doubt. I have been to Israel several times, and my sister and I could not stop plotzing when we would see clumps of hot, young Israeli guys dressed in army fatigues. It was like a Bruce Weber wet dream. Anyway…back to Merle who has great style, humor and extensive reference. It’s kind of what I like about me too…but whatever. Here are snippets of our conversation leading up to our decision to SKYPE tomorrow and compare notes on our Best and Worst Dressed of the MTV Awards.

ABE: Hey, Merle. How is the mood in Israel in light of all the bad press that it’s getting.

MERLE: It’s kind of amazing how light they are taking it – they really feel they are in the right. They say the Turkish boat was full of weapons and terrorists.

ABE: Duh. (Beat) Why are you in Israel?

MERLE: I am here for work – and fun. And cute guys! (See…I was right.)

ABE: Where are you staying?

MERLE: The Dan Tel Aviv.

ABE: I used to run from The Dan to the Old City of Jaffa when I would be there…amazing. It’s like being Jesus. There were no signs of modern civilization if you just looked north.

MERLE: Jaffa is AMAZING. I love the little cafes.

ABE: Best food on Earth. Tell me about what you are doing there.

MERLE: I am here with an Israeli TV producer – I spoke at the fashion school Shenkar, I gave a speach at a huge Beauty City event for Super Pharm, and I am writing an article about fashion in Tel Aviv for fashionrules.com.

ABE: I cherish my favorite shirt that I got from that great flea market. Killing myself that I didn’t buy ten of them.

MERLE: There is some great fashion here.

ABE: I think it’s amazing that you are there through this major controversy.

MERLE: Funny, no one here thinks there is a controversy! To them it is life as normal.

ABE: In the US, the media is up in arms and the reports are that Israelis are as well.

MERLE: Well, not Tel Aviv. They just basically think the Turks – and the Palestinians – are liars and terrorists. I can’t believe the rest of the world doesn’t know there were weapons on that boat – and known terrorists.

ABE: That just shows how biased the American media is now against Israel. But look at you Merle, reporting from the front lines. You’re like a Jewish Angelina Jolie.

MERLE: Yes, from fashion – to passion. Fashion is a religious experience. I WISH I looked like Angelina!

ABE: Me, too.

MERLE: Let’s do a cross continental coverage of the best and Worst Dressed of tonight’s MTV Awards. OK?

ABE: Love it. I will SKYPE you tomorrow and we can compare notes. Genius. What’s your schedule tomorrow?

MERLE: I will go to the beach in the morning, 9 am here to about noon.

ABE: Jealous.

MERLE: Let’s call it Apples and Oranges, Best and Worst of the MTV Awards. Gotta dash.

ABE: Shalom. Next year in Jerusalem.

MERLE: THIS year in Jerusalem. I am going there tomorrow night.

10 ‘fashion gods’ were each captured by the photographer of their choice for the tenth anniversary of 10 Magazine. Helmut Lang sent in a passport photo, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana by Terry Richardson, Vivienne Westwood by Juergen Teller, Ralph Lauren by Bruce Weber, and Karl Lagerfeld submitted a self-portrait. Alber Elbaz, Azzedine Alaia, Donatella Versace, John Galliano, and Tom Ford are the others.

V Mag’s January 2010 issue will be devoted to plus-size models. “Big, little, pint-size, plus-size — every body is beautiful. And this issue is out to prove it,” V editor Stephen Gan said.

Models include Crystal Renn, who is quite famous in the world of modeling, and scheduled photogs include Terry Richardson, Bruce Weber, and Karl Lagerfeld (who is a total fatist), among others.
