Trench Connection UK: Burberry Scores 10 Million Facebook Fans

Burberry is the most popular girl in school. That is, if school was the world of luxury labels and popularity was measured in your number of Facebook friends…well, at least one of those holds true. The Brit brand has convinced 10 million people around the world to “Like” them — I’m still on the fence.

Chief creative officer Christopher Bailey and co. fired off a series of “Thank-yous” after hitting the milestone, which served as yet another technical triumph for the iconic label. In October, Burberry was ranked as the most digitally-competent brand with the highest digital IQ in an index created by NYU’s think tank, L2 Luxury Lab. And while there are other fashion brands with more Facebook friends — Victoria’s Secret has over 16 million and Converse over 21 million — they’re not trying to sell you a $1400 bag anytime soon. FILM FRIDAY: Akira (1988)

So technically Katsuhiro Ôtomo‘s 1988 anime isn’t a “film”. Worse still, it’s an anime movie. But this cartoon’s got it all: double-breasted suits, 1970s Tom Verlaine/Richard Hell get-ups, and lots of stuff for the leather daddies out there. This Film Friday, let’s take a look at Akira.

The reason that Akira is such a killer nominee for this Friday feature is that it’s probably the most detailed animated film ever made. It literally puts anything Disney has ever done to shame. Factor in that the movie takes place on such a massive scale (a re-imagining of post-World War III Tokyo) that there’s a helluva lot of detail.

Based on Ôtomo’s as of then yet-unfinished manga (it just gets nerdier and nerdier, doesn’t it?) the film starts off extremely strong focusing on a group of teenage reprobates and secret military experiments but soon loses its way. Fortunately for those of us who like looking at beautiful things, however, it never loses its style. So, with that, on to the outfits!

As stated above: super-macro. The outfit that pops out most is the man in the yellow chinos. It’s getting towards the end of pastel season (i.e. Spring is being burned to death) but it’s always a good/super-preppy look when someone gets all Nantucket on their own ass with a basic blue oxford and some colored slacks. Then there’s Mr. Punk I and Mr. Punk II to the left with looks reminiscent of the most recent Balmain men’s collection. Leather jackets with a little bit of prep mixed in (a button down and olive green slouch neck sweater). Who knew cartoons could dress so damn well?

But Ôtomo can go super-micro too. If you want to look like a teenage derelict/leader of a futuristic bike gang, here’s how you do it, from head to toe. Check the fit on all the items: slightly oversized polo to let the cool breeze in, cropped just-slim-enough chinos, killer mid-top white sneaks.

Second from the left, and the guy all the way towards the right. Neither of these characters plays a major role in the film. In fact, the rightmost character might not even have a line. Nevertheless, both of these guys have got it going on. Hello Joe Strummer, and hello sweet shearling collar overcoat. We’ll refrain from commenting on the cutoff graphic tee on the left.

The girls get in on the action too, of course. From left to right, some real-world finds. Honestly, this movie’s like a schizophrenic sketchbook come to life mixed with a lot of Mad Max, Max’s Kansas City, and, uh…Max Fischer. It’s totally max, basically.

Check the gallery and see if you can match the following with their pictures. It’s like one of those quizzes on children’s placemats at roadside diners. Or, you know, don’t. Whatever you do, pick up Akira (or watch it on YouTube). Enjoy all the pretty pictures, pretend to soak up the philosophy and the Kubrick-ian 2001-style ending. When else can you say you’re-a-learnin’ while watchin’ car-toons?

Christopher Bailey’s Fall 2010 Burberry Prorsum collection focused on and dropped jaws with one staple: Outerwear. Not to say that the rest of the collection was forgettable, but with leather, fur and shearling coats of literally all shapes, colors and sizes, who really has their eye on anything else (except those gorgeous thigh-high leather stilettos)? With most coats and jackets exuding a militaristic, aviation vibe, the collection is just as much for the dress-ups as the dress-downs. Move over it-bag, it’s all about the it-coat now!

Honestly, can Christopher Bailey do anything wrong? Bailey focused on outerwear for his Burberry Fall 2010 menswear collection, enhancing the classic trench with trendy lapels and testing out some truly beautiful double-breasted shearling coats. Slouchy riding boots, nubby sweaters and slim, classic trousers made some brief appearances, but despite their excellence, this season’s outerwear outshone all.

Glee star Dianna Agron and model Agyness Deyn have been caught wearing the same Burberry dress. Agnyess was seen it first, back in September at the Burberry Prorsum Spring 2010 show, while Dianna just recently wore it at a party that InStyle hosted.

Dianna’s look was more simple and elegant, which works on her, but I just wish the dress was a smidge shorter. The top-half of Agnyess’ outfit I like, but I’m not loving the bottom so much—especially those sheers socks.

Burberry Prorsum closed London’s 25th anniversary Fashion Week, and for good reason. I’m usually not the biggest Burberry fan, but Christopher Bailey’s Spring 2010 collection was a show-stopping, draped heaven. Classic trenches were updated with draping and ruching while dresses got shorter, more youthful and scrunchier. Yes, the Burberry classic gingham did make an appearance via several handbags, but don’t worry, it was kept a subtle minimum!

I know it’s Burberry and people will use the label to justify their purchase, but I will be the first to say it, what in the hell happened? I know this is just a diffusion line, but seriously! The label has more or less fallen off the face of the Earth, and for good reason. Their plaid is played out, and it really seems like the brand is struggling to prove that they weren’t just a trend.
