When Prada asked Roman Polanski to direct a short film for them, he was unsure the freedom would be there. “The chance to dwell on what the fashion world represents nowadays and the fact that it is accompanied by so many stereotypes is fascinating and at the same time a bit upsetting, but you definitely can not ignore it. It’s very refreshing to know that there are still places open to irony and wit and, for sure, Prada is one of them.”

Roman Polanski thought it best to screen A Therapy unannounced before the restored movie, “Tess.” Prada is just full of surprises.

Daphne Guinness in Abed Mahfouz – Another member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Tranny Heel, the always impeccable Daphne Guinness chose relatively unknown Beirut designer,  Abed Mahfouz to wonderful effect .

Kirsten Dunst in Patrik Ervell — I feel like I’m experiencing a Kirsten Dunst renaissance. First she wins the top acting prize at Cannes, now I actually like her choice in red carpet attire? What goes on here? Though honestly, I’m always a sucker for a woman in a tux and a high bun.

Karolina Kurkova in Diane von Furstenberg — An emerald, hooded jumpsuit, sashed at the waist? Karolina literally looks like the ghost of Grace Jones…and she very well might be since god knows where the hell that brick house full of crazy is these days.

Chloë Sevigny in Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony — Leather and lace and giving face. Nothing’s wrong with a little free self-promotion, though her lady humps seem to be angling for some attention all their own.

Betsey Johnson in Betsey Johnson — Why the hell not? Betsey looks great — and in all black! — but the tulle ballerina skirt remains in tact, if only a few inches south. But for girls our age, Bets, everything ends up heading south eventually.

Chanel Iman in BCBG Max Azria — Lady and the vamp! Looks like Chanel and Karolina both hopped on the same 70s soul train, but with a bit of leg, a flash of cleav and a shoulder or two, Chanel is ready to steam up some mirrored disco balls.

Call me crazy just as long as you call Michelle Harper perfect. I’m not sure what she’s wearing, but I want one in every color.

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen in The Row — I’m convulsing over MK’s gold lamé jacket, I just wish Ash had chosen to accessorize a little more. Hair up, statement necklace and a cat eye never hurt anyone. The Row bags, while cute, also look like mini-briefcases, which for an evening dress, is a little jarring.

Vera Wang in Vera Wang – Vera, Vera, Vera. While I love a cowl neck, this look makes Morticia Addams look like Patricia Goddamn Field. Where’s the color? Where’s the fun? I would’ve taken a beading wedding gown over this funereal frump any day of the week.

Erin Fetherston in Erin Fetherston — The CFDAs might have to instill a ban on designers dressing themselves. Though the dress is lovely — and that bang is flawless — the color washes Erin out completely. Also, another lack of accessories! Does no one wear jewelry anymore?

Joy Bryant (and Rachel Roy) in Rachel Roy — For the permanent record, Rachel looks good, not her best look, but she gets a passing grade. Barely. Because after all, she also dressed Joy, who’s going to have to stay after school and bang the erasers. And from the looks of that dress, she might also be banging the janitor.

Tory Burch in Tory Burch — You can try to dress up a burlap sack as much as possible, but then it’s just a burlap sack with some awful polka dots and some even more awful ill-placed beads. Or bottlecaps. What are those actually?

Sessilee Lopez in Zac Posen — One question: why? An old lady dress on a stunning, young supermodel still looks like an old lady dress. And frankly, I doubt any dames of a certain age would be caught dead wearing this. It’s unflattering, there’s too much going on about the bodice and worst of all it looks cheap. Zac, I would like to see you in my office. Bring the butt paddle.

5. Oprah. I know this is short notice with the world ending tomorrow and all, but I really think Oprah and I should be together since I’ve recently adopted her as my mother. She’s not really aware of it.

6. Violent Lips. Sometimes a girl needs to look fierce and really this isn’t the time to slack off with boring old jungle red or whatever signature color you use. Give me a hot pink leopard lip and call it a day/year/life.

8. Angelina Jolie’s Atelier Versace gown from Cannes. I love a good statement-making gown when the skies open up; and this gown will say, “Excuse me, stop what you’re doing. I get it…but I’m in the room.”

9. A pair of Louboutins I lifted from FI‘s Editor-in-Chief Sam Lim. Barring the fact that I’m about six shoe sizes bigger than she is, Sam’s long hours in the line at the Christian Louboutin sample sale should be celebrated. Celebrated with a unbearably painful walk-off.

Poor Lindsey Wixson. The teenaged super in training fell about four times on her catwalk down the runway, eventually crawling her way backstage where Naomi was no doubt there waiting with motherly open arms rather than brandishing her usual cat-o-nine-tails to punish Wixson’s lack of coordination. After all it was charity! The audience didn’t mind and even cheered as the young model was engulfed in a sea of fabric on her numerous tumbles.

Then along came Whoopi.

After Tyra spoke — with obvious bemusement — about a girl’s foot getting mangled after tripping on a rose petal (first hint that you should hang up the stilettos) during the Top Model finale, Whoops Goldberg subtly brought up the models falling at Fashion for Relief to the shock and amusement of the live studio audience.  Joy, always the voice of instigation asks if something was wrong with the show itself…

But Tyra’s too smart for that.  She plays it off, explaining that, “Sometimes it’s the runway. Sometimes it’s the floor. Sometimes it’s the shoes. And sometimes it’s the damn model.” Behar, like a dog with a bone, won’t let it go, saying “It can’t be the damn model cause too many of them had fallen…” before the ladies erupted into a cacophony of squawks and squeaks at each other. But amidst the chatter we hear Tyra say, “I wasn’t there…I don’t know.”

Ay, that’s the rub. Tyra might not have been in Cannes for the Fashion for Relief show, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t drop by earlier to grease the runway and saw off some heels to re-pay Naomi the snub of not getting invited. Is this all conjecture and hearsay? Of course. Is it all true? Eh, maybe. But the ball is in Naomi’s court. And that bitch does not play fair. [NY Mag]

Although never seen completely alone together, everyone is wondering what these two hot Hollywood stars are doing spending so much time with one another.

I guess only time will tell what’s really going on, but we can have fun speculating for now. I vote that this is a complete recreation of Titanic, but that’s me. What do you think about the possibility of love blossoming between these two?

I’d always thought that Resort collections were sort of the bastard stepchildren of design houses, taking backseat to Spring and Fall’s Ready-To-Wear shows, but Cruise is actually Chanel’s biggest and most important delivery of the year.

Last year’s Saint-Tropez line was practically sold out by January while the resort season is growing strongly by double digits. So jetting off to the South of France is really just a smart and very necessary business move and not at all an excuse to sun on the French Riviera.

I’ve always loved Michelle Williams, and I’m usually not a fan of short cut on women, but she looks gorgeous in Cannes for the photo call for her new movie “Blue Valentine.” Her look is pretty simple but she’s my favorite from the festival!

Naomi Watts wore the DVF Vanner dress from the FW10 collection at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday May 15^th, 2010 in Cannes, France.  Loving the colors, the pattern, and the yellow shoes are a perfect compliment.

Palme d’Or

Cannes is so random, it kills me. At least with MTV it’s the same sucky group of individuals you expect to show up and look fugly, but here we have Elizabeth Banks, Asia Argento and Natasha Poly, all in some serious sparkles and all looking fan-fucking-tastic. Elizabeth Banks–I don’t know how or when you did it, but you somehow went from the “There’s something wrong with her underpants” horny bookseller chick from 40 Year-Old Virgin to a serious red carpet contender with relative ease and incredible flair. That dress is a.maz.ing. Fits like a glove and yet somehow does not look trashy or overwrought; the long, loose hair is a great throwback to old school Hollywood (eat it, Europe!); and the bold accessories add the just the right eccentric touch that’s expected at Cannes. And I never really know what to make of Asia Argento, but she looks surprisingly comfortable in what was possibly my favorite piece from this season’s Armani Prive in way that tells you she was born to wear incredible clothing and look awesome while doing so. And Natasha Poly? She’s a fucking model, of course she looks perfect. A little on the uncomfortably thin side for me, but maybe that’s just her body type. The classic red lip and bare face paired with that dazzling dress are what really did me in. Quirky, glamorous, gorgeous: that’s what Cannes is made of.
