Perhaps not so much a secret, but for those of us who are less than proficient with calculators and numbers, Designer Pak Lee reveals that a perfect fitting item can be achieved with formula. Should one be fitted by Tangent, one will become the owner of a piece that can be worn now or 10 years from now – thanks to the Golden Ratio, a discovery linked to DaVinci and his Vitruvian Man.. A variety of cuts accommodate the various shapes of the public. They are Golden Ratio, Gradient, Fjord, and Arc. Sweat shops, unemployed Americans and low quality work are just a few outsourcing issues menswear brand Taylor Supply will never have to deal with because every single item is designed and produced right here in New York. Founder and designer Christophe Hascoat, a collector of vintage objects, is inspired by the rugged individualism, industrial innovation and entrepreneurship that was prominent in the early 20^th century and as a native New Yorker, he is convinced that keeping everything close to home will only result in clothes that look good, are comfortable to wear and last a lifetime. “It allows me to see the line progress and be absolutely sure of the quality of the final product. I also appreciate the idea that I am actively contributing to an industry in New York that is highly qualified and should still be thriving.” Hascoat will be at (capsule) NY to show the ss11 line that was inspired by industrial boating from the early 1900’s and includes clothing made with fine fabrics mostly imported from Japan.Having prior experience in the industry designing for brands such as Triple 5 Soul and Zoo York, Hascoat is off to a great start with Taylor Supply so be a patriot and check out this inspiring interview ofthe man behind Taylor Supply. We’re so excited to be moving the (capsule) show to Chelsea—the heart of NYC’s vibrant art gallery scene– that we’ve decided to present an art show of our own. Other Spaces, a temporary exhibition of paintings, photography, sculpture, video and installation works, and the first curatorial venture by Jayne Drost, features seven New York-based independent artists– Palma Blank, Leah Dixon, Sam Falls, Left Coast, Daniel Turner, Timothy Uriah Steele,and Kristof Wickman– who use formal and material qualities of their work to create an internal or psychological experience for the viewer through a network of references.    Other Spaces gathers paintings, photography, sculpture, video and installation works by seven New York-based independent artists who assert the formal and material qualities of their work to propose a spatial montage—an internal or psychological experience for the viewer experienced as a network of references.

The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday thru Friday from 11AM-7pm.  Please stop by!

Palma Blank’s abstract paintings play with the optical perception of spatial relationships in the
picture plane. The bright and contrasting colors used in her compositions create illusions of
movement and complicate the viewer’s read of the two-dimensional canvas. The formal qualities
of her line-based paintings refer to the striations and pattern often seen on a digital screen.
Leah Dixon’s paintings, which incorporate a collage of paper, canvas and synthetic materials in
aggressively mismatched images and clashing colors, evoke the constant and aggressive
onslaught of media, news images and information experienced in daily contemporary culture.

In the work of Sam Falls, the artist deploys large format photography, found material, and digital
drawings to blur the perception of where the actual ends and the image begins. His latest series
of photographs entitled Re-Constructions incorporates a series of paper forms altered by light and
shadow, the resulting images of which are manipulated through a traditional and methodical
photographic process.
Left Coast, the collaborative group of artists and musicians Sarah Kuhn, Lane Lacolla and David
Shull create video and installation works that draw upon a multitude of references from art and
pop culture. This site-specific work uses the act of charity or gifting to reflect upon the new-age
narcissism inherent in a contemporary, image-conscious culture.
Daniel Turner’s minimal sculptures use highly evocative and often caustic industrial materials,
such as tar, iodine and vinyl in surprisingly delicate ways. For Turner these substances refer to
his American southern birthplace and have a powerful, nostalgic effect. Turner has also created a
site-specific wall drawing for the show made by a series of repeating bodily gestures by the artist.

Drawing upon a network of references from art history, biology, and pop culture, Timothy Uriah
Steele explores relationships of space, time and location in his paper relief paintings. Steele
mixes a wide range of legible imagery with abstract elements in his compositions to create
psychological apparitions of an (un)known space or time.
Using a cache of unambiguous objects in his sculptural practice, Kristof Wickman reframes the
familiar through the use of humor and alienation. In his minimalist sculptures of culturally specific
and yet unclassifiable forms, Wickman subtly manipulates what appears to be a “readymade.” By
isolating a specific alteration, he undermines both the thing itself and the tired Duchampian
process of straight re-presentation of everyday objects.

What’s the inspiration behind the SS11 collection?

The life and writings of Ray Cannon and the Golden Age of Baja California. 1947-1977.

What are some concepts, movements, era, people, music etc that have impacted the design of the collection and why?

In 1947 only a single, 70-mile highway paved the Mexican peninsula from Tijuana to Ensenada. A pre-tourist era, before luxury hotels, resorts, and sport fishing fleets. This is where Ray Cannon left a successful Hollywood career, for a legendary fishing romance in unspoiled Mexico.

Spring Summer 2011 draws inspiration from Ray’s sport fishing columns on the Sea of Cortez for Western Outdoor News, and the rustic palette of local ox carts, cacti, sunsets and sailing canoes.

The desert palette revisits washed out sun-drenched colors of red dust, turquoise and chalk blue, contrasted by a more refined black and white delivery.

What do you expect will be some key items in the collection?

Vintage cut Japanese selvedge denim is introduced into the collection.

After going to the last (Capsule) trade show and seeing this collection by Cleveland designers Wrath Arcane, I knew it was going to be a huge hit. It’s been about 9 months since I’ve seen it, and it’s just as perfect as it was when I first saw it. The draping and wrapping cuts mixed with some classic looking head pieces really give for a unique look. Exciting news for all you female fashion lovers out there! I received and email from the folks over at BPMW today, informing me that they will be launching the first ever (Capsule) Women’s show this February! (Capsule) has always been my favorite event of the year, and I am pretty excited to hear that all you ladies get to share in the fun that us gents have been having for the past couple seasons (who am I kidding, I’ll be at the women’s one too. Twice the fun in one season!). The dates are set for February 22nd and 23rd! So set you New Year’s resolutions to stun and prep to head over the (Capsule) Women’s.

Corey and I caught a glimpse of these great Ladyboy grey, buckle and canvas boots at NYC’s Capsule collection this summer. They’re comfortable, casual and a great addition to any downtowners closet!

Get it at Oak!

My favorite booth at Capsule every year is by far Naked & Famous. The guys are always super energetic, very enthused about their products, and could quite possibly be the best salesmen I have ever met (not that they need to be with product as amazing as theirs). The denim pieces they offer are amazing, and their mixtures of denim with other fabrics result in some of the most unique, high quality jeans in the industry. Here’s a preview of one of their new pairs of jeans that are cross woven with a warm cotton fabric to give you a super comfortable lined pair of denim. That’s all I’m going to show you for now. Check back soon, as I can say for sure right now that I’ll be featuring more from Naked & Famous in the next couple days. B store has always been one of the top producers of shoes, and from what I saw of their Spring 2010 Collection, you won’t be let down. I am so excited to see the golf looking shoe featured above with the tassels and the tongue. I’d rock them, would you? Also keep your eye out for more cut out designs. Y-3 is launching some bright and unique high tops for Spring 2010. I love the speckled ones the most. Trying to find truly fashionable sneakers these days isn’t the easiest, but Y-3 does a good job. Be sure to check out everything Y-3 has to offer at their website.

Fred Perry has a great collection ready for Spring 2010, that I was lucky enough to view at the Capsule event last Tuesday. The collection features a lot of sheers, as well as this heavy sweater material tank top. Here are some of my favorite pieces from the collection. A fairly new player in the game, Creep presented a collection at Capsule that was so flower laden it couldn’t be ignored.

Corey and I just got back from Capsule, and while we were incredibly impressed with the majority of the collections present, we both had a little soft spot for S***R Shoes. S***R has provided kicks for Thom Yorke of Radiohead to Orlando Bloom and even Matthew Williamson! Gathering inspiration from the iconic James Dean, S***R shoes have a recognizable look with the modern convenience of a rubber sole. But S***R  Shoes are anything but sneakers. Fashion Indie friends, Wrath Arcane, have been quick to rise up my list of favorite designers, and their latest Fall 2009 Collection jst moved them up a few more notches. I got a chance to check this collection out at (Capsule) a few weeks back, and I fell in love. I really do plan on buying 90% of this collection it is that good. The leather products that are new for this year are insane, and they have more shoes besides the ones shown. The collection is insanely good, incase you couldn’t tell from my excitement.

Mjolk has been a favorite brand of mine for a long while now, and when I got to see their Fall 2009 Collection at (Capsule) this year I was really excited to see what they had. Well it’s safe to say I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. Mjolk is gearing up to launch another amazing collection. They have some great thigh length shirts and cardigans and the micro print suit is amazing from any distance. The super small print gives it a completely different look from up close.

Another one of my favorite (Capsule) brands, S2VS has quite an amazing Fall collection lined up for all you fashion hungry men out there. I had a few extra minutes to spare at the massive trade show, and I was lucky enough to spend them with S2VS designer Sean Salim talking about what he has to offer us for Fall 2009. The collection is a solid mix of denim, plaids and stunning outerwear. Much like what S2VS is offering for Spring 2009, the brand is continuing forward with the double wasted jean, which  I absolutely love. One of my favorite pieces which isn’t featured in the images, was a full body, one piece, thermal suit (much like that of Alexander Wang’s or A.P.C). What is the difference between his and theirs? A couple hundred dollars! We talked styling for the piece as well, and Sean recommends using it for a warmth aspect and layering it under a pair of denim and a long cardigan or coat. This really is a brand/collection to be very excited about. Call me crazy, but I may even consider S2VS the men’s version of Alexander Wang!

I popped into New York for a quick minute over the weekend so that I could attend my second season of (Capsule), which has quickly trumped New York Fashion Week as my favorite event of the year. With some amazing designers like Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Denim & Thread, Buckler, Chronicles of Never and April 77, (Capsule) provides buyers and writers the amazing opportunity to see what the hippest designers have planned for the upcoming season. This season featured some of my favorite designers in the industry, and I will be featuring them all week as the pictures roll in from their press offices.

I was lucky enough to meet and talk to some amazing people and designers from labels like Wrath Arcane, Velour, Naked & Famous, Lova and S2VS. Another season another great success. I can’t wait to see these collections on the shelves in 2009/2010.

Our good friends at Wrath Arcane have some really exciting news for all of you indies!

We’re going to be showing our FALL 09 line at all three (capsule) shows in NY, Paris, and Las Vegas.  We’ve just finished designing the line, and now we’re going back and forth with our US factories with the samples.  The line is expanding to include boots, hats, and gloves.  WHOA.

Mjolk was one designer that I saw at this year’s Capsule event over the summer that I have been extremely interested, excited about. Each collection has both outlandish pieces to remember by, and classic, staple pieces. The combonation of the two is what makes Mjolk so great in my eyes. Here is a line up of what you can pick up from them this current season. Don’t be scared to get a little crazy, buy some Mjolk and make a statement.

You Must Create, or more commonly known as YMC, is developing their on-going ethos and commitment to creating intelligent clothing that is wearable and distinctive while remaining uninfluenced by the seasonal whims of fashion. The brand was originally created in London in response to the increasing demand for stylish, functional and modern clothing. YMCs collections gradually develop from season to season to ensure originality while maintaining longevity.

“It’s Only the End of the World Again,” is the newest collection from Wrath Arcane reflecting the current economic/political situation and human nature. The brand does not necessarily follow trends, but instead they “focus inward on what Wrath Arcane is becoming.” The brand tries to push “Wrath specific” details instead. Their Spring/ Summer ’

09 will be somewhat of a leap as far as fabrics are concerned. The line will be infused with more subtle color and continue to be organic and natural. Look out for collaborations such as the graphical/jewelry one with Philadelphia artist Hilary White and leather collaboration with HAUS.

Red Wing Shoes, a brand that dates back to 1905, is committed to the basic principles of style, craftsmanship, quality, and comfort for more than a century. Red Wing shoes started as a brand making tough comfortable shoes and shoes for hard working people at war, on the farm, and in oil fields and factories, but now they retain that unique American style and superior quality while being fashion forward.

S***R ( SWEAR) footwear, born in 2001 on the London scene, has attracted some great attention in the fashion and music industry with after its first flagship store opened on Carnaby Street in London. Founded by Jose Neves and brand manager Jorge Sampaio, S***R has minimal and classic shoes with a punk rock twist. The “ James Dean”

has become an instant classic, and with six new shapes named after famous rockers, there are more to come.

Since its birth in 1994, Maharishi has evolved into one of the UK’s most influential designer labels, offering men’s, women’s and children’

s collections available from exclusive fashion retailers worldwide. Founded by (creative director) Hardy Blechman, Maharishi carries a strong ethos of respect for nature while utilizing the latest technology. Blechman started out in the military and industrial surplus trade shaping his future aesthetic and philosophy.

Rod Keenan first introduced his line to Barney’s in 1992, and ever since then, from his millinery studio in the heart of Harlem, he’s been creating innovative and fashion forward men’

s hats. In Fall 07, Keenan started a more youthful line, RodNYC, to include a mix of perennial favorites with seasonal and whimsical twists, along with classic shapes in contemporary colors.

New York based designers via Denmark,Mjölk, will be making an appearance atCapsule next week.” I am obsessed by the practical concerns, cut, fit, fabrication and engineering,”

says Lars of Mjölk. The brand that recently did collaboration with Topman for S/S 08, was started in response to the growing lack of artisan craftsmanship used in mens clothing. The line features garments completely engineered towards a given look or shape regardless of its function.

Founded in 2003 by Mick Hoyle in London, F-Troupe uses British historical and functional influences to make footwear that is quintessentially British with an international appeal. Within a short span of time, F- Troupe has established itself internationally and is now available in 24 countries.

Starting out by just making t-shirts for friends, Chrissie Miller and designer Madeleine von Froomer, created a line of clothing staples with a New York vibe. Sophomore, the line inspired by the 70s and the L.E.S., has added some new fashion pieces to the timeless collection. The S/S 09 collection features jacket/sweatshirt options, muscle pocket t-shirts and bright colors.

Footwear and food? An interesting combination that designer Takashi Kanokogi has put together for his Rhythm Footwear collection. Kanokogi’s designs are basic with minimal decoration paralleling each shoe’s simple name –Sandwich, Bagel (both pictured here), Gyro and Panini. The inspiration is simple as well: daily life (i.e. hanging around with friends, listening to music, drinking, etc.). These designs are sure to satiate anyones appetite for Spring/Summer 09.

Tsovet, the newest line of watches making its debut at Capsule, brings back the basics. Tsovets philosophy is to remain timeless and classic in aesthetic and function. Despite the vast array of technology that keeps us moving in our day- to- day lives, the traditional wrist-watch manages to survive. Their latest model, the SVT- CS79, is rooted in the theme of exploration, similar to that of the wrist compass worn by surveyors in the Black Sea region. Made using the finest techniques and materials, Tsovet is sure to stand out in a world full of IPhones and Blackberries.

The good folks over at WeAreTheMarket.com have been revving  up for Capsule, their twice yearly trade show for young menswear designers.

They took a few minutes to review some new tees and inspirations from Yoko Devereaux.

Among the diverse sources of inspiration that will debut at the Capsule Paris show, look for “the Hamptons meets early 90’s downtown grunge” – you’ll know it’s the Spring/Summer 2009 collection of Yoko Devereaux. Imagine how a “renegade” Kennedy grandchild might style early Marc Jacobs – sleeveless, oversized cardigans, rounded collars, bow ties, rain coats, cuffed shorts and drop-pocketed jeans.
