- You know who knows how to properly celebrate 420? Rihanna. Aside from rolling a blunt on a bald man’s head — while in Chanel no less — she also puffs with the mightiest lungs in America, if not the world, Snoop Dogg himself. - Carine Roitfeld is showing no sign of slowing down this year after a whirlwind 2011. Aside from her new magazine, the Parisienne is hooking up with MAC to deliver a limited edition line of cosmetics, focusing, naturally, on the eye and the brow. [WWD]

- Turn your TVs on and turn the sound off for Bravo‘s The Untitled Male Model Project. Kinda surprised, and a little disappointed, it took Bravo this long to launch a reality show centered around male models but I’m assuming Andy Cohen had to do some rigorous “hands-on” research. [The Cut]

- Also hopping on the reality show bandwagon is designer/professional cartwheeler Betsey Johnson whose Style Network show Betsey + Lulu chronicles her relationship with her daughter as she tries to step out of her mother’s sequined shadow. [Racked]

- The Guess v Gucci trial has come to an end, with Guess’ lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli, making a convincing closing argument calling into question Gucci’s slow response to the defendant’s alleged trademark infringement. Judge Shira Scheindlin is expected to deliver her verdict in the coming months. - Tyra’s holding three pictures in her hands…and they’re all going the fuck home. Ms. Banks has not renewed the contracts for (read: fired) her America’s Next Top Model costars — stylist Jay Manuel, noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker and runway coach J. Alexander in favor of recruiting bloggers like Bryanboy. Meanwhile, burn that show to the ground and just bring back André Leon Talley to soft shoe over its ashes. [Page Six]

However, don’t expect to see Mario Testino‘s work in the pages of CR. The duo worked together for decades on The Face and later for Vogue Paris, but since he’s contractually obligated to Vogue, Testino is a no no. But that doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of talent. For the first issue’s mock-up, Argentinian photographer Sebastian Faena captured a topless — this is Carine after all — Kati Nescher while Bruce Weber shot Patti Smith in all her Miss Havisham glory.

In addition to scouting new talent, Roitfeld is being more hands-on than ever before, taking meetings with advertisers like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Cartier for the first time in her career. And according to her they were “very receptive and eager to participate.” Though carrying over 100 ad pages, ads in CR won’t look like other fashion mags since it will reportedly only carry spreads and have no front-of-book content — that will be reserved for the online component.

The fashion book will also only have longer-format articles, published in the writer’s original language — whatever that may be — with translations in the back. In her mock-up, Roitfeld had articles written in Arabic, Japanese and Russian, although CR itself is an English publication with offices located in The Standard hotel.

Carine insists that this new magazine of hers is in no way a form of revenge to her former bosses at Condé Nast, saying, “Vogue is a very beautiful magazine, an institution, and I learned so much working there. You can’t put yourself into competition with a magazine like Vogue; you have to create something new, something different.” She added, “It’s time to find something new, something fresh — for me and for the readers…I find that some people in fashion are so blasé. Fashion has to be fun”

Roitfeld will bring her trademark irreverence to styling photoshoots, which she admits “will always be edgy.” She’s trying to find new ways to push the envelope, not by being “safer” but rather just “different,” explaining, “Maybe it will be more mental than physical.”

CR Fashion Book‘s first issue will have 288 pages at a cover price of $9.95, with a publication of 50,000 copies, mostly in Europe but also including the U.S. and Asia.  And when Carine’s not busy working on that, she’ll have a host of other projects keeping her busy, such as styling campaigns for Max Mara and Chanel, musing for Givenchy‘s Riccardo Tisci and then there’s a full-length documentary on her slated for 2013 by Fabien Constant.

So I think it’s safe to say leaving French Vogue was the best thing to happen to Carine Roitfeld. [WWD]

Illustrating this theme, the mag profiles three particular individuals at different stages of their career: “the Breakout” Joseph Altuzarra, “the Artiste” Georgina Chapman of Marchesa and “the Dreamer” Alber Elbaz.

Elbaz, known for being the most adorable of high fashion designers, is surprisingly candid in his interview and reveals there are claws behind that bowtie. To wit, my favorite quote: “I always say I cannot work with bitches; they block my creativity.” And I don’t think he’s talking about the dog variety.

Elbaz even discusses being looked over for the creative director position at Yves Saint Laurent, despite being handpicked by the late designer himself, for Tom Ford: “As I say to people, I was never just Alber from Saint Laurent, and I an not Alber from Lanvin.  I am Alber, period.  That’s why I might have been hurt, but I was not dead.  It didn’t kill me.”

The issue also features an interview with Giorgio Armani who reveals his dashed hopes of being Paul Newman, as well as a conversation with Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld on Chanel‘s upcoming Little Black Jacket book that is predictably amazing:

CR: “The first Chanel jacket that I saw – that I knew was Chanel – was on TV.  It was on Mrs. Kennedy – the pink one.”
KL:  “In 1963.  It was a fake, a line-by-line copy by Cassini.  She did have real Chanels, [but] her sister ordered them.  We have all the proof.”

- Justin Bieber gets the crap editorially beat out of him in the latest issue of Complex, quickly replacing this as my new fave Bieber spread. And it has nothing to do with seeing him getting his ass kicked…absolutely nothing at all. [Complex]

- Haider Ackermann mentioned something about wanting to work for two houses in particular, and while refusing to name them, admitted that designing couture is his dream. And then everyone broke their necks jumping to conclusions about Dior.

- Carine Roitfeld‘s new magazine is rumored to be based out of New York, home to her children and their various legal woes. [Fashionista]

- Rihanna‘s taking a break from generally not giving a fuck to throw her support behind the Kony 2012 movement. Looks like we were right about her philanthropic future. [Vogue UK]

- The sweatshop lawsuit against Alexander Wang – Wang-gate for short — has been temporarily discontinued with a battle royale erupting between the two lawyers involved in the case. [The Cut]

Based solely on a delivery of flowers to the Dior atelier addressed to Ackermann, Vogue UK has started the ball rolling on another round of conjecture. While Karl Lagerfeld has made his intentions clear that he would like Ackermann to take over for him at Chanel once he dies retires, the same clearly cannot be said for Dior.

As for Simons, the mag reports that negotiations with Dior may have stalled — sound familiar? — and that Bill Gaytten‘s appointment may have been extended.

Gaytten is busy prepping the Christian Dior fall 2012 collection, but according to the Telegraph, his success at the luxury house — as well as his 17 years of loyalty — may not go unrecognized. Dior’s sales are booming so there may be no need to fix the formula if ain’t broke to begin with.

Prince Pierre Casiraghi

At Double Seven, a club in the Meatpacking District — New York’s most elegant dumpster —  Monaco’s Prince Pierre Casiraghi, third in line to the throne and grandson of Grace Kelly, was poppin’ bottles with pals Diego Marroquin, noted Carine Roitfeld scion Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld, Paris Hilton‘s ex-boyfriend Stavros Niarchos and his current girlfriend, model Jessica Hart.

In the other corner, Adam Hock  owner of the now-defunct Hawaiian Tropic Zone — okay, “man of the people” might have been a stretch –was livin’ it up with supermodels Anja Rubik and Natasha Poly, ordinary model Valentina Zelyaeva and Poly’s husband Peter Bakker at the table of Double Seven owner, Jeffrey Jah.

Accounts vary on who instigated the confrontation and why. In one version of the story, Casiraghi and co. were upset they weren’t seated at Jah’s table, presumably the best table in the house, and rolled up on team Hock. There they started getting all kinds of aggressive and even dared to drink from Hock’s $500 bottle of Grey Goose — I mean, people have died for less.

Another version has it that Hock just hulked out for no reason and started throwing haymakers. Still another chalks it all up to everyone being too drunk and not knowing what the hell was going on.

What is clear, however, is that Prince Pierre Casiraghi got his shit seriously rocked. Hock knocked him across the room, broke his jaw, leaving him — as one witness puts it — “disfigured” — and sending him to the hospital. At one point, someone even tried to hit Hock with a bottle of vodka, but that just made Hock angry. Then he beat up the prince’s three friends before the models — god bless them — broke it up.

Of course that act of altruism didn’t stop Jessica Hart from reportedly screaming at Natasha Poly later on the street: “Your husband’s a loser! Fuck you!” But that’s neither here nor there.

After spending two days in jail and being charged with four counts of assault, Hock still claims that he’s the real victim here: “I acted 100% in self-defence. I felt I had to defend the honor of the women I was with,” he told the Daily News. A point that Jessica Hart openly — via Twitter — denies.

Hock for his part is playing the role well:

“I feel I was victimized by several drunk, entitled guys who felt they deserved the prime table with the most beautiful girls. They expected to be treated like the royalty they are. They didn’t get what they wanted, and it pissed them off.”

Perhaps a little too well:

“I am concerned these guys will make my life difficult. I imagine they are sitting with their parents strategizing how to destroy me. I am getting married in June. I want to start a family. I don’t want enemies like this.”

Well, you gotta point there, Hock. Carine Roitfeld can have Karl Lagerfeld on the phone in one second and from there it’s a slippery, Chanel-upholstered chute straight to hell.

Carine Roitfeld in Visionaire

Roitfeld is reportedly in talks with the media group behind Visionaire, V Magazine and VMAN. It would make sense considering the former editrix has a long history with Visionaire and recently guest edited issues for both V and VMAN. She’s been seen a lot around the company’s offices as of late with hearsay claiming the mag could launch later this year.

Much like Lindsay Lohan, I’ve never been one to put much faith in rumors, but this is one I certainly hope has some inkling of truth. [WWD]

“Carine Roitfed. She has such great style.  I would love to raid her closet, for her shoes. We have the same size shoe and we used to share shoes.” I ask her if there are any shoes in particular she would snatch. “All of them.” Well-played, Lara Stone. Well-played.

Stone, the official fashion ambassador for Mercedes-Benz, is whisked away in a tornado of Prager’s creation as part of the automaker’s “Icons of Style” campaign, featuring the SL Roadster. Inspired by The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Vertigo and a bit of the Brothers Grimm, Prager tells a modern day fairytale with Stone as the beautiful blonde “with dark, suspicious undertones,” to borrow the photographer’s words. To achieve the “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore” vibe, the super was strapped into a harness and flown around the air — a process she actually enjoyed.

“My favorite part of working with Alex was all of her crazy ideas!” Stone says. “Hanging in a harness was so much fun and a great change from just standing around [posing].” Of course, at this point in her career, Lara Stone is no stranger to uncomfortable situations. When I ask her what was one of her favorite shoots, she immediately mentions her latest campaign for Calvin Klein, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

“The rocks were so sharp! I love that campaign, all those bright, different color jeans, but laying on the rocks was very uncomfortable,” she says with a laugh. “They were sharp and it was hot with big waves crashing over us. Very scary! When I saw the final shots though, it was totally worth it. I always love working with them [Mert and Marcus].”

Wondering what, if any, of her plans were outside of modeling, Lara responds simply, “I just got a puppy and I want to hang out with him. His name is Bert and he’s a boarder terrier.” I’ve never been much for dogs, though lately I’ve been contemplating getting one, so I took this opportunity to do a little research. “What size is he?” I ask. “Oh, you know…dog-sized.” She then  attempts to approximate Bert with her  arms, and he seems a little big for my taste.

“We have sort of an office dog,” I venture. In truth, we have like five office dogs —  one of them’s wandering around now as I write this. But I single out the pug, who makes the most regular appearances in the FashionIndie office. “Oh, they’re so cute!” she exclaims and we discuss the general cuteness of the tiny little monsters and their giant bug eyes. Then I mention that his name is Napoleon. “Does he have the complex?” she asks, not missing a beat.

Meanwhile, I wish I  had brought along a rimshot if I had known Lara Stone would be serving shtick.

- According to GQ, Los Angeles is the best smelling city in the world. Because nothing beats the scent of smog, Botox and desperation. [GQ]

“When you work with real people, you can’t impose something,” Roitfeld told WWD. She also stressed the importance of casting for male fashion becuase “it’s men who give personality to the clothes they wore.” Where she stands on women and personality is anyone’s guess, but for the cover Carine tapped easy-on-the-eyes French actor Tahar Rahim, shot by Nick Knight. Frequent collaborator and BFF Karl Lagerfeld also stepped behind the lens for the issue, as did Richard Avedon‘s son, Michael, who shot portraits of up-and-coming young actors, including The Hunger Games‘ Alexander Ludwig. Jean Baptiste Mondino snapped hottie bullfighter José María Manzanares and Willy Vandeperre lensed Lima et al for the pin-up calendar.

- And speaking of former reality stars I didn’t know/care were still around, Paris Hilton on the cover of Vanity Fair Spain, ladies and gentlemen. [Huffington Post]

- Derek Lam has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Ivanka Trump claiming she “blatantly and intentionally copied” his Ayami wedge sandal. Well she’s a Trump, did you think she’d copy it with any degree of subtlety? [WWD]

- The Kardashians are suing Star Magazine for libel after the tabloid broke news that they were using child labor and sweatshops in China to manufacture their products. Turns out the head of the Institute for Global Labor and Human Rights was operating on hearsay and assumption. Did no one ever tell him that when you assume you make an ass out of Kim, Kourtney and Khloe — and they can do that fine all by themselves, thank you. [TMZ]

- For some over-privileged boys and girls, Christmas will come a few days late this year.  Due to technical issues of some sort, Barneys has had to cancel several online holiday orders. No, Virginia, there isn’t a Santa Claus because Santa’s IT elves are slacking this season. [Racked]

- Carine Roitfeld‘s had one hell of a year and she wants everyone at Vogue Paris to know it, especially that Emmanuelle Alt. Regarding the loss of Alt’s friendship after 10 years, Roitfeld had this to say: “Maybe this was not supposed to be a friendship. If I look at the balance, maybe I lost some people I thought were my friends, but I made so many new friends. Having never rode a motorcycle -- nor possessing the desire ever to ride one -- I've never had a motorcycle jacket. But who needs a hog when you've got these marvelous ruffled sleeves that practically yelp "Hell's Angel?"

Finally a man's heel -- 4.5" thank you -- in a man's size -- size 11 or 12, if you're wondering. I've actually worn a pair of these courtesy of one of my tranny friends and while they were literally torture, my legs looked 12 feet tall. And at the end of the day, that's all that really matters.

If there's one staple in my wardrobe, it's a harem pant. But lately I've been wanting more drop-crotch action and this crotch drops all the way to the knees. The closer it looks like I'm wearing a skirt, the better.

Givenchy has long been my favorite, aspirational mens line and these adorable tees are cropping up everywhere. During the winter months, the tropical motif will keep me from abandoning all hope and resigning myself to pajamas and hoodies everyday.

For those inevitable nights out on the town, why not a silk two-tone jumpsuit? It gives the appearance of separates but the comforting freedom that only a one-piece can provide.

I love a fashion book and there's been no fashion book I've wanted more this year than Carine Roitfeld's Irreverent, chronicling the ex editrix-in-chic's life and career.

I'm a proud bag lady and every few months I need to trade in the old for the new. Right now I'm operating with a fuchsia backpack, but this more grown-up messenger bag speaks to the bitter old queen inside of me -- whom most people tend to ignore.

25. Beyoncé at the VMAs How does an internationally-renowned pop diva announce her alleged pregnancy with as little -- and yet as much -- fanfare as possible? Why in Lanvin and Dolce and Gabbana, of course. Cupping her burgeoning baby bump on the red carpet, Bey let loose the dogs of publicity war when she thew her mic to the ground, ripped open her Dolce jacket, and announced to the world the coming of the Messiah.

24. Karl Lagerfeld's obsession with Blake Lively Blake Lively is Karl Lagerfeld's kind of girl. And he didn't hesitate to let everyone know, naming the Gossip Girl star Chanel's official purse ambassador, throwing her in print ads, parading her about the French Riviera and most terrifying of all, showing her something bearing resemblance to actual affection.

4. The reinvention of Carine Roitfeld Quele scandale! Did she get fired? Did she quit? Are she and Emmanuelle Alt no longer friends? The rumors have been buzzing around Carine Roitfeld since she officially exiting Vogue Paris in February -- and in the process creating a future supermodel in Saskia de Brauw --  after 10 landmark, nipple-bearing years. But through it all, Carine has been the picture of calm and chic, hiking up her pencil skirt and reinventing herself as a brilliant and in-demand stylist/the coolest bitch on the planet. Stay tuned for another reinvention when Carine launches a new magazine and starts life as a grandmother next year.

3. Kate Middleton's Alexander McQueen wedding dress The speculation was unbearable for what was the biggest and most well-kept secret in an age of superfluous information. Though an unsurprising but nevertheless brilliant choice, Sarah Burton's handiwork cemented the Duchess of Cambridge (née Kate Middleton) as not only a bona fide style icon but a phenomenon on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Burton proved she was the right person to carry on McQueen's brilliant legacy and take it to the next level.

Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty The most successful fashion exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's  history, Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty set records and inspired fashion lovers and neophytes alike. The exhibit proved so popular, in fact, the Met extended its run twice. Even then, there were still lines of people waiting hours to get into the museum, but for 661,509 people it was well-worth the wait.

John Galliano stars in Gallianogate John Galliano's downfall has loomed large all year, particularly since Christian Dior has yet to announce his replacement, despite a neverending back-and-forth with a stubborn Marc Jacobs. Following a stint in rehab, a guilty conviction in Paris for making anti-Semitic remarks, and the general destruction of his reputation, Galliano at least had one bright spot this year: designing good friend Kate Moss' wedding dress. Galliano's dismissal also raised questions about the stress designers are under to deliver  multiple collections a year -- just ask Balmain's Christophe Decarnin. Everyone's still waiting to see who Dior picks to take the throne and if Galliano can make a comeback after such a devastating fall. As 2011 comes to a close, 2012 has the promise of even more scandals, breakdowns and breakthroughs that we cannot wait to cover obsessively for you. Speaking of Gucci, Ford compares his time at the Italian luxury house to the work he does now: “At Gucci, it was all about creating The Look each season The Shoe, The Bag, The Hair. But now I have no desire to create The Look. I just want to make beautiful, glamorous clothes.” Pity he won’t wear them, though.”

But before sending a look down the intimate, exclusive runway, Ford always has his PR lady Whitney or Carine Roitfeld when she’s not pussyfooting with Karl Lagerfeld, try it on: ”If they don’t wear it, it doesn’t go into production.”

As for that infamous French Vogue he guest edited for Roitfeld, Ford explains his reasoning behind all the geriatric grinding: ”My mother doesn’t like me saying this but she’s in her late seventies and her boyfriend’s in his late sixties. The point is she’s active and looks amazing, and yet we’ve taught ourselves to think that ageing’s embarrassing. That’s why I left all the wrinkles in the story shot for French Vogue of an old couple having sex”.

And then there’s Ford’s burgeoning film career after 2009′s wonderful A Single Man. While his next film, allegedly a comedy, is “ready to go,” the life of a filmmaker has its difficulties: ”I would lose my mind if I just did films…I enjoy the speed of fashion. I love doing different things and I think I still have something valid to say in fashion.” I fully support that — I always find whatever Tom Ford says to be valid, no matter how batshit it is.
