Ho hum as this may seem, it’s good news for you as the waist is naturally the skinniest part of the body. So you get to cinch it in tight and show off that sexy hourglass figure. Unlike the drop waist that dominated runways a year ago.

The New York Times chronicles the rise of Nicki Minaj as a style icon; from “making dresses in her basement” to donning Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci to the 2011 Grammy Awards to being a guest of Vogue editrix Anna Wintour at Carolina Herrera‘s spring 2012 fashion show. Minaj, however, has yet to attain the true testament to style-iconery — the coveted cover of Wintour’s precious publication. But according to the raptress’ manager, she’s “in talks with the magazine.”

If the talks prove succesful, Nicki Minaj would — correct me if I’m wrong — be the first rapper on the cover of Vogue. Although god knows Gwyneth Paltrow‘s been known to drop a hot verse in her day.

Pre-Fall Preview Prepares us Pretty

While young indies are busy designing away on Fall 2012, the big guys are already starting to show Pre-Fall 2012. Sneak a peek at what Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, Rachel Roy, Jason Wu and others are up to for the second-coming pre-season.

It's a chilly southwestern movement brought on by the Aspen aristocracy.

This cape-jacket should say it all, but Wu spoke as well, "They are four equal seasons now. There's nothing watered down." Inspired by Indian Maharajas and Charley Harper's illustrations, the look is absolutely lux, clean and powerful.

In a feminine turn, DKNY breaks out the cherry blossoms, lace and swing.

In a "continuation of Spring" Herrera sticks to whimsical prints in slim proportions.

Gucci Gucci Coos a Jazz Tune

Drop the waist low, fringe it forward, jazz it art deco and you’ve got Gucci Spring 2012. Frida Giannini turned out 20s in Milan, and she was not the only designer to do so this fashion week – think Marchesa, Temperley London, Carolina Herrera and others. However, in a remarkable coincidence (?) in which Giannini insists she was merely musing over NY skyscrapers of that time period, it also happens to be Gucci’s 90th birthday (bust out those calculators, ladies). Stars and Stripes: Building the CFDA American Flag

Betsy Ross may have fashioned the first ever American flag, but the Council of Fashion Designers of America is more likely to tap Betsey Johnson to design theirs.

The CFDA celebrates its half centennial next year and is launching its “Stars of American Fashion” endowment drive. In an effort to raise $2.5 million, the CFDA is selling 50 stars at $50,000 a pop to designers, who will then personalize their star before it ends up on a special American flag.

28 designers have bought stars so far, including Tom Ford, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang. [WWD]

The Tents, A History of New York Fashion Week

I just sneak previewed the film that has crept its way into the belly of New York’s fashionable whale. It found three glasses of Chandon and a dime-size ~~hors~~ d’oeuvre dinner. It also found the history of New York Fashion Week, which evolved from a goose chase of Manhattan’s shabbier locales to an editor-friendly runway machine inside Tents that house the most fabulous of circus on the planet. The Tents: The NY Fashion Week Documentary gives a proper remembrance to the 18 years in Bryant Park where fashion changed. Through interviews with Donna, Calvin, Betsey, Isaac, Carolina, Zac, Tommy, editors and NYFW creators, we get an über dramatic (“Editors had to take taxis all over town, HORRIBLE!”), yet pretty darn accurate collective fashion saga. Target Announces Two New Collaborations For The Holidays

Target has sent out the official word today that they are partnering up with designers Albertus Swanepoel and Dana Kellin to introduce two affordable limited-edition accessories collections just in time for the holidays.

For those of you who don’t know: milliner Albertus Swanepoel has been a constant in the fashion world since 2004 and has collaborated with Alexander Wang, Carolina Herrera, Diane Von Furstenberg, among many prominent others.

Dana Kellin is an LA based jewelry designer recognized for pioneering the trend of wire-wrapped jewelry which are very popular now.

Albertus Swanepoel’s for Target features 14 colorful women’s hats, each priced at $19.99 and Dana Kellin for Target ranges in price from $9.99 to $49.99 and includes an assortment of delicate necklaces and earrings.

Both collections will be available for a limited-time beginning Oct. 30, 2011 at most Target stores and Target.com.

The Autobiography of Hamish Bowles

Everyone’s favorite effete dandy, Hamish Bowles, is finally gifting the world with his autobiography, detailing his many shenanigans under the scornful gaze of Anna Wintour.

Vogue‘s Editor-at-Large revealed the big news during a lecture on Cristóbal Balenciaga last week at the Phoenix Art Museum:

“I’m about to start working on a more autobiographical book about my adventures in fashion and at Vogue.”

A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Bowles served as Fashion Editor and eventually Style Director for London’s Harper’s & Queen — which by the way is the gayest ( i.e. most amazing) sounding magazine ever — until 1992 when he became Style Editor at Vogue.

In addition to writing books on the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Yves Saint Laurent and Carolina Herrera, Bowles is an avid collector of historically significant fashions and haute couture.

When I went to the Balenciaga: Spanish Master exhibit at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute, I was surprised — and painfully jealous — at how many of the clothes were lent by Hamish Bowles, who also served as the curator.

This autobiography is obviously topping my Can’t Effing Wait for It list, if only to learn how I, too, can start collecting historically significant fashions and haute couture. I’ve wanted to have the world’s largest archive of drop-crotch pants, bodysuits and tranny heels since I was a little girlish boy.

LOOK ONE: Crop It Tall

The Painted Shorts: A. Turen, $168

The look began with the jean shorts, hand painted by Ashley Turen. Tattered to exposed-pocket summertime delight, these completely original mid-waisted metallic daisy dukes spoke to me.

The Nude Leather Tank: Maggie Ward, $282

I chose this top for its stability and flounce; the cropped A-line is perfect with a short and tight high waist. Plus, the leather is like cream. Maggie Ward was founded by Three Dots co-founder John Ward with the vision to make comfortable clothing that doesn’t appear comfortable. Tricky, tricky, and totally working.

The Softest Cropped Cardi: KristenseN du Nord, $239

This piece immediately warranted a home in the Boutique Critique. The combination of fabrics so delicate on a shape that embraces the moment makes for a must-have. Since the brand’s inception in 1996, they have worked exclusively with carefully selected Italian craftsmen and the finest materials. They use a method they call “wash-wash” to ensure zero shrinkage.

The Turban-Tied Scarf: Juma, $176

Amidst the wall of brilliantly patterned scarves, this one jumped out in its regality. With the image of a peacock surrounded by its painterly feathers, it just begged to be wrapped around my head until it became a fabric beehive. Brother and sister duo Alia and Jamil Juma forged these scarves and the rest of their collections from the influence of travel and art.

The Memories Necklace: Venessa Arizaga, $325

Off this chain hangs little bits of reminders of the trinkets you’ve encountered throughout your life and childhood. Each piece of jewelry is different; these pieces are gathered by Vanessa Arizaga through her copious travels. Before she took the dive into her own jewelry business, she was deep in the design world working under Tuleh, Carolina Herrera and Zac Posen. This is jewelry with a sense of humor and a background of elegance.

The Sneaks: Ash, $130

Properly faded and bleached, this pair makes one chill summer sneaker. The design pair Leonello Calvani and Patrick Ithier share a history in French luxury and create fine shoes that hit abreast of the trend – they strive to cater to those who seek out fashion in the most thrilling cities in the world.

The Chain Mail Pouch: Laura B Collection Particulière, $760

Made of metal mesh that moves like water, this pouch slouches so elegantly at the side. It has an alternative handle to carry on the wrist as well. Versatile and a little bit see through, I’m rather in love. This bag came to Laura Bortolami in a dream, whilst sleeping in Morocco; a glimmer on mesh. And so she did. Before she did any of this, she worked in her native city of Rome for Armani, Gianni Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and more until she dedicated herself fully to her jewelry venture in 1999.

Gaultier Happy as a Puig in Mud

Puig has acquired the majority stake in Jean Paul Gaultier from Hermès, though the designer still retains a 40 percent share in the company.

Gaultier is the most recent addition to the Puig fashion family, which includes Nina Ricci, Carolina Herrera and Paco Rabanne. JPG will step down as president, making room for Manuel Puig (right), so that he can focus his attentions — thankfully — on designing his couture and ready-to-wear collections.

The past few seasons have seen Gaultier in a creative rut, but the designer is happy about the new partnership, saying of the Puigs: “They know what they want to achieve and they are buying Gaultier for Gaultier, not to turn it into something else.” Well, they could at least turn it into a good label again…I’m just sayin’. [WWD]

RED CARPET REPORT CARD: The Best, Worst & Most Boring at the Met Gala

Last night was the holy grail of red carpet fashion. The 2011 Met Ball honoring late and legendary designer Alexander McQueen brought out the best in, well, almost everyone. In this edition of Red Carpet Report Card, we’ll take a peek at the star-studded event and decide who was working, who was sleeping and who should have been turned away upon arrival.

*Andre Leon Talley wins the award for best purple tent. As always, his volumes are amazing.

Let’s take a look at the Best Dressed of the night. This category has quite a bit of people, as it should, for fashion’s biggest event. These were the As and high Bs, the working girls.

Shalom Harlow is my pick for BEST DRESSED in Marchesa. This is what the Met Ball is all about – she looks breathtaking in that gown.

I almost fell over when I saw Christina Ricci in Zac Posen. She never ages a day and looks super sexy in this sheer number.

I found Mary-Kate’s dress underwhelming, but Ashley Olsen looks ravishing in vintage Dior Haute Couture. The whole look is perfect.

Elle Fanning looks like a little couture doll in Valentino. She is so outshining her sister, it’s not even fair.

Rihanna has been looking haggard lately, so I was pleasantly surprised at how elegant she was in this striking Stella McCartney gown.

Iman, also in Stella McCartney, turned it out in a metallic gold jumpsuit. A little draggy, a lot amazing.

Karolina Kurkova in a spring 2011 Jean Paul Gaultier lace legging-dress creation. If the models can’t do it, who can?

I love this Prabal Gurung gown and funky jewelry on Ciara. White could be difficult to pull off at the ball, but she did it right.

Even though Crystal Renn is too skinny for my taste, she is an absolute vision in Alexander McQueen. I need my hair to look like this.

After getting ready in a Barneys window yesterday, Daphne Guiness showed up in McQueen. Perfect, amazing, stuns.

I loved Ginnifer Goodwin‘s look from the moment I saw it. Then I realized it was custom Topshop. Damn she makes it look good.

Naomi Campbell looks like the queen she is in custom McQueen. She wears the sedatives well too.

Hamish Bowles looks like a true gentleman in custom McQueen. Love it from head to toe.

I always wait with baited breath to see what Blake Lively is wearing. She obviously did not disappoint in a Chanel toga.

New York’s best couple showed up looking better than ever. Beyonce is working that Emilio Pucci gown like whoa.

Queen Bitch Anna Wintour gave her best smile to the camera and looks like a shiny grandiose statue in Chanel.

On to the Most Boring of the night. On any other occasion, these folks would have looked great (probably). Unfortunately, this also means they’re the Cs of the Met Ball.

I’m sleeping. Zoe Saldana is usually among the best dressed. Why did she choose this boring Calvin Klein for the biggest fashion night of the year?

Leighton Meester is amazing, but she has trouble getting it right. Different shoes and hair would have done this Louis Vuitton dress more justice.

I love this Michael Kors dress on Emma Roberts, but she has the body to wear something more over the top on a night like this.

Madonna, the Material Girl herself, definitely could have done better than this Stella McCartney dress. Pretty, but boring.

I’m actually quite obsessed with this Miu Miu dress Michelle Williams is wearing. But I would wear this to a nice dinner, not a gala.

And now ladies and gentleman, the Worst Dressed of the night. These are the Ds and Fs of the Met Ball, the creme de la creme of mistakes.

ARGH! Christina Hendricks used to dress so well! This Carolina Herrera gown is an unflattering fit and color on her.

Oh dear. Hate to say it Alicia Keys, but it looks like you’re wearing a giant turd instead of Givenchy. Brown jacket AND dress is NOT fly.

Jennifer Lopez looks like a halfway plucked bloody chicken. Matchy-matchy lipstick, bag and Gucci is a no go.

I thought Chloe Sevigny would make McQueen look good, but I was wrong. The hair is awful and the dress fits like she grabbed it off some rack.

Sorry to say it Kate Hudson, but this Stella McCartney is not a cute pregnant lady dress. And whatever is on your head isn’t working either.

Nooooo! In the rush of preparing for the gala, Lucy Liu forgot to get a wax! Oh wait, that’s just her looking blech in Vionnet.

For Whom the Belle Tolls: A High Fashion Royal Wedding

With the Royal Wedding creeping achingly closer each day, British Vogue would be remiss if they didn’t feature at least one editorial homage to the Prince William-Kate Middleton hysteria gripping both sides of the Atlantic. In “Wedding Belles,” Mario Testino does the honors, capturing Arizona Muse, Fei Fei Sun, Kirsi Pyrhonen, Madelene De La Motte, Irina Berezina and Karmen Pedaru as they’re besieged by men and women in uniform while maintaining their matrimonial cool .

I’m a traditionalist and have always wanted to get married in Dior Haute Couture…my bridesmaids, all drag queens in Chanel Couture, deathdropping down the aisle while Liz Taylor officiates in a Givenchy Couture catsuit. Sadly, that dream is now missing a Dame.

Angie Harmon wore this Carolina Herrera dress to the Screen Actor’s Guild Award nominations Thursday night. She looks beautiful, but I think a simpler dress that didn’t cut her body into so many sections would have been better. Or it could have worked without the flower on the skirt.

I’m starting to think more and more that I’m really the drunken left over of an unintentional Cathy Horyn and Tim Gunn smush. Seriously, these two embody my inner critic. I hope they get a show someday and invite me on with them. We’d be a family again. Check out Momma’s latest rant after the jump…

On Alexander Wang:

Mr. Wang is not a great designer, though he probably would be happy to accept any laurels that people want to toss him, but he is clearly a shrewd guy . . . The designs were cool, but they didn’t have to stand up to much scrutiny – hey, didn’t Marni do those pants last season? – so long as the stuff was widely and easily available. Mr. Wang doesn’t really have courage in the traditional sense of trying something new and difficult, but he does have China. Nearly all of his clothing is now produced there.

With Alexander, he’s a smart kid, I admire the business that he’s built, but you have to be critical of what he’s done. You can’t just say ‘Oh well, he’s young and he’s working hard, he’s putting a product on the runway.’ I found that show boring. I may not have found other shows boring, but I found that one boring.

On Fashion Night Out:

I hope it doesn’t go on. I don’t want it to continue . . . You know, we’re a nation of shoppers. That’s how people spend their time, shopping online, shopping in stores, acquiring. And I feel like we perpetuate that with Fashion’s Night Out. What are you really celebrating? Not art or great books. You’re celebrating shopping.

On Her Critical Approach:

[I] want people to be better. [I] have standards. [I] want people to be not just good but very good. And I can be tough on people, sometimes too tough, especially with the most creative. I once called one of Tom Ford’s collections freakish and ugly.

These comments were part of a larger article written by The Daily Beast. In the story, the Beast writer tries to find people willing to talk about Horyn. No one wanted to open up.

She did get a comment from Karl Lagerfeld:

I prefer to look at beautiful pictures in magazines like American Vogue and French Vogue by editors like Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld. (My guess is he’s too old to read…)

And Carolina Herrera:

I don’t think reviews really matter anymore.

And Donna Karen who said that getting swiped by Horyn “still hurts. You can agree or disagree with her, but it’s definitely passionate. She’s not neutered, let’s put it that way.”

A Jimmy Fallon-helmed Emmys actually ended up not being the worst thing to happen to mankind. Who knew? In fact, it was an entertaining, well-paced affair that ended on time — take note Academy Awards. It was also the gayest Emmys in recorded history. At times I thought I had stumbled upon the Tony’s or the GLAAD Media Awards. The homos came out roaring and took away a lot of the top prizes and I for one couldn’t have been prouder.

The show started off with a Glee-themed fagtastic bang with Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Jon Hamm and last living Golden Girl Betty White (some say she’s overexposed, but she’s 800 years old and could go any minute so I’ll take as much as I can, thank you) joining the Glee kids and Fallon for a cover of “Born to Run.” It was pretty much downhill from there, but it was a gentle and slow descent, made more comfortable by getting all the fun awards out early.

Proving that there is a god somewhere, Jane Lynch (woefully sans a pantsuit yet again) picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Eric Stonestreet won a well-deserved Outstanding Supporting Actor for Modern Family, which also went home with the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy at the end of the night.

Edie Falco won her fourth Emmy, this time for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. A controversial choice, perhaps, but Carmine Soprano literally shits Emmys . I’m holding out hope for Amy Poehler next year, though, that is if Parks and Rec makes it that long. And some guy from some show on CBS I will continue to ignore, I mean, Jim Parsons won Lead Actor.

My frequent nemesis January Jones might have lost to Kyra Sedgwick for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, but she won best dressed in my book, wearing a gorgeous Atelier Versace gown. Though I wish she had done her hair in a chignon and left the messy bed head hair to Cammy Diaz.

Aaron Paul -- Wrap him up, I'll take him to go.

Bryan Cranston picked up his third consecutive Emmy for Lead Actor for Breaking Bad and his hottie of a co-star Aaron Paul won for Supporting. Newcomer Archie Panjabi took home Outstanding Supporting Actress for The Good Wife. Then Mad Men sauntered off with the Outstanding Drama Series for the third year in a row.

Though Betty White and Neil Patrick Harris won for their guest starring roles on SNL and Glee, respectively, their trophies were handed out at the Shmemmys earlier, thus robbing us of what would surely have been a hot and heavy make-out session everyone…?…the gays…?…okay, that I have been anticipating since the nominees were announced.

That was one of a few disappointments in an otherwise — dare I say it? — great show. The awards, for the most part, went to the right people and I got to scream at Brittany Murphy and Rue McClanahan one more time during the In Memoriam slideshow. The fashion at the Emmys, however, left a lot to be desired.

The big theme of the night was Greek/Egyptian, with a lot of one shoulders, goddess gowns and geometric necklines, heavy on the jewelry and metallics.

The red carpet was a big snore, except for a few bright spots, such as Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen and the aforementioned Betty Draper.

From what I’ve been reading, most people hate both of these looks, but that’s the price you pay for bringing high fashion to American TV sets. There were, admittedly, some horrible missteps and yes I am looking at you Heidi Klum.

Hot tranny mess, working that tired drag for all its worth

The usually flawless supermodel and Emmy nominee (?) opted for a Marchesa mini. Meanwhile, if I never see another Marchesa gown on the red carpet I could die happy. The amazing Lauren Graham also faltered a bit in Yigal Azrouël, riding that damned Grecian theme straight into hell.

Is that bracelet bulletproof?

Lea Michele went overboard with the ruffles in Oscar de la Renta and her boobs always looked as if they were about to jump ship as well.

She should have taken a cue from co-star Dianna Argon who looked beautiful in Carolina Herrera.

I would have liked the dress to be a little shorter, however, about mid-calf, to play off a 50s silhouette. But, as the New Directions kids put it, you can’t always get what you want. Then again, at least Lea didn’t follow in the tranny footsteps of her other castmate, Naya Rivera, who apparently thought she was going to a quinceañera.

God bless her for trying.

I can’t wait to hear what Joan Rivers has to say about all this, but until then, what’s your opinion? Who looked stunning and who just looked stunned?

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week has found a new home at the Lincoln Center this September after a triumphant run at Bryant Park. A few designers are coming back after a brief hiatus from the tents because of the recession. The schedule for the Spring/Summer 2011 shows was released today and I can't wait to start getting invites and emailing press departments to beg for invites to the big shows. This year Fashion's Night Out returns and I plan to spend it with friends boutique hopping in New York City. Check out the full schedule below.

After weathering scrutiny as a pregnant teenager during her mother’s vice-presidential campaign, Bristol Palin is forging her own path as an independent single mother. Harper’s Bazaar captures an intimate family scene with Bristol and her son, Tripp, in a charming tea party-themed fashion spread, which showcases gowns by Carolina Herrera, Lanvin, Isaac Mizrahi, and Michael Kors.

In the interview, she opens up about her new life as a working single mom and more.

On being pregnant during the 2008 presidential campaign: “It’s not like we all sat down and were like, ‘Alright, here’s the birds and the bees.’ Truly, my parents just assumed that I wasn’t doing anything. And it was a shock for us all.”

“It was kind of humiliating. . .Great, I’m 17 years old, I’m 40 pounds overweight with a big belly on me, all my friends are at school watching this on the news. This kind of sucks.”

On taking responsibility as a working single mother (Bristol works as a medical assistant, serves as an ambassador for Candie’s foundation, and fully supports herself and her baby): “I’m on my own. I’m really proud of it. I’m a hard worker.” “I don’t have time for friends or anything like that. It’s just like, Right, crap, there is a hockey game tonight that I want to go to but I can’t. Or, I do have to go to work today, because I’ve got bills to pay.”

On dating: Bristol is not seeing anyone at the moment: “I’m in no rush. One day I’ll find a nice guy.”

On her son, Tripp: “I thought I would be somewhere warm at college with my friends, but that was definitely not possible with having Tripp. I love my baby more than anything. He’s like a Gerber baby. He’s the cutest baby in the whole world…I just want Tripp to be happy and healthy.”

Sarah Palin on her daughter, Bristol: “We’re very proud of her for taking responsibility. It’s not an easy road, but it’s the right road. Decisions were made, and we can’t unwind those decisions. Consequences are being dealt with. I’m sincerely proud of her.”

Denim leggings, skinny jeans and shorts were all over the runways this season. In other words: I saw legs, legs and more legs. Get working on those thighs now.

This February, NYC Fashion week runways were crammed with cool shorts. Tracy Reese, Carolina Herrera and Cynthia Steffe rocked super short leather shorts, tweed shorts over tights and knee-length shorts with thigh highs. You can pull these looks off too – Just follow these workout tips and your legs will be shorts-ready all year long.

The most important tip to keep in mind is that cardio alone will not shed body fat. Weight training is necessary to add lean muscle mass to the body and must be worked into any fitness regiment. Some women don’t weight train for fear of “bulking.” However, that “bulk” is mostly fat beneath which lies curvy, sexy muscle, which even when trained for years, is not as voluminous as you think.

For the roundest, hardest built possible, my secret formula is deep lunges and stiff legged dead lifts – both with intense butt squeezing.

Most importantly, know that with the right legs and butt, you can look hot in WalMart shorts.

Harper’s Bazaar is launching a Spanish edition, the debut issue of which hits newsstands in the Iberian country today. Estonian model Carmen Kass is on the cover of the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar Spain, which clocks in at 300 pages (including 101 ads from the likes of Burberry, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, Gucci and Ralph Lauren) and has an initial print run of 100,000.

Bold, abstract prints can be seen in many various runway shows and how they’re worn is almost always together. Here we see that designers like Carolina Herrera, Dries Van Noten, and Versace are making an audacious styling choice and statement by pairing their graphic prints with other abstract patterns.

I don’t mind the in-your-face prints as long as they’re done in a way that they don’t overwhelm the outfit. I feel that in everyday wear, it’d be best to choose one piece that contained a bold pattern—making that the focal point—and leaving everything else simple.
