Just ask Bernard Arnault and the folks at Chrisitan Dior. While Converse is the most liked brand on Facebook with over 22 million fans, Dior’s 6.5 million fans ain’t nothing to sneeze at; particularly since more than 153,000 of them liked the posts Dior added in January. Compare that to the 100,000-plus post likes at Converse and it looks like quality trumps quantity — a first in Facebook’s short but trashy history.<span

Nowhere is this more true than in haute couture. Sure, this gown costs $35,000, was constructed by a team of half-blind old ladies whose skills are so specialized they can be classified as endangered species and contains actual diamonds, but Joan Rivers still thinks you look like a refugee from some drag queen concentration camp. No, events like the Oscars require a little discretion and the simpler you keep it, the better. Of course, there are exceptions, but not every actress is a <a

For the rest of ‘em, here are 10 safe gowns sure to please along with 10 only the brave of soul and intrepid of style should even consider.

<span

The collection embodies her masculine crispness with feminine textures, and the good news is, aside from two jackets, the entire collection is under $100! We caught up with Doo.Ri and asked about the Unkle Karl and her upcoming collections.

<span

When you started, did you know that Karl Lagerfeld had signed on, and the great roster of talent they were gathering?

I knew that Karl was involved. I have to be honest, he was a big motivator for me. I’ve always been a fan of Giambattista Valli, and Karl Lagerfeld is like God.

Which of your strongest aesthetics did you apply to designing this collection?

Definitely the element of jersey. I’m known for this elegant ease and I think that’s what I wanted to convey. It’s not the same jersey we use for the collection, but it’s a beautiful modal and I think it’s so modern. It’s great that they’re able to make it accessible for so many people.

What are you most excited about for your show this Fashion Week?

I love the process. During fashion week, there’s a rhythm to it. Everything feels great, and then you feel the emotion that comes with it; the momentum picks up. You work with all these creative minds and it’s so great to see it all come together. We have a rack for the clothes with about five pieces on there. And it’s amazing how fast things happen as you get closer to the day. Before you know it, it’s 3 days before styling and that rack just fills up, 10 more pieces, 20 more pieces, 30 more pieces! I don’t know how it happens! But it just does. And then things get faster. We’re working there 24/7 and it feels like 2 hours have gone by. It’s Fashion Law. Something happens where time gets sped up, but everything speeds up, the amount of clothes that are produced, the energy level, the creativity and I love that rhythm.

IndieNewsroom: Disco Divas Boogie Down at Etam…Chanel and Givenchy Couture Shows…SATC Star Gone Bald

NEWS

chaka khan

Chanel

chanel fall 2012 haute couture

chanel haute couture

chanel numero prives

Cynthia Nixon

disco

etam

givenchy

givenchy fall 2012 haute couture

givenchy haute couture

gloria gaynor

grace jones

indie newsroom

Karl Lagerfeld

kreayshawn

live with kelly

riccardo tisci

sister sledge

terry richardson

tim gunn

v magazine
<guid

Karl pop-up shops are being planned in several major cities, with at least one in Paris, and a select 20 “high-visibility” retailers will also carry the line. The company will expand into menswear for the fall 2012 season.

While the Karl line is meant to appeal to the younger generation, Karl Lagerfeld Paris, a more upscale collection, will be targeted at retailers in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia and “key fashion cities” of North America — sorry L.A. — with prices starting where Karl left off, $411 to $3,425.

These initiatives are meant to turn the Lagerfeld celebrity into a global brand that exists independently of the Chanel and Fendi houses. That, thankfully, does not mean an end to the king of collaborations crown. So you can still get your Macy’s T-shirts, your overpriced glassware and god knows what else the Kaiser plasters his name to, but fair warning, those co-branding opportunities will be fewer and farther between. Class is in session and as usual Burberry is the only one who did their homework. <span

They also scored well in e-commerce and mobile commerce thanks to its global site relaunch, landing the over 150-year-old British label the top spot on the L2 index and the official label of “Genius.”

Kate Spade was a newcomer to the index but their blend of smart e-commerce and a strong mobile and social presence skyrocketed the brand to the #2 spot. Storied houses Chanel and Christian Dior, on the other hand, seem to be resting on their luxury laurels earning only “Average” L2 IQs.

Prada and Hermès started running with the bad girls in school, smoking in the bathroom and dating college boys instead of working on their social media and as a result their IQs plummeted from “Gifted” in 2009 to “Challenged” in 2011. And to make matters worse, Prada was cited as the “biggest digital disappointment in luxury.” Yikes, wait til your father hears about this….

But in their defense, Europe might just have a harder learning curve. Ten of the top fifteen brands in the L2 index were American and on average American brands have a higher digital IQ than their Euro counterparts. Finally, somewhere the U.S. excels in something besides obesity and sluttiness.

The top 10 list is as follows:

1. Burberry: Digital births an icon: Proof that digital investments translate to shareholder value.

2. Kate Spade: Top social media score; Index newcomer did not get memo that heritage is necessary to be iconic digitally.

3. Coach: New York native continues to woo the blogosphere and registers top scores for site experience.

3. Gucci: Gucci Connects dots and delivers with shoppable video and recent Tumblr launch

5. Dolce & Gabbana: Global site relaunch threads needle of edgy and effective.

5. Tory Burch: Facebook store leads fashion F-commerce (r)evolution.

7. Ralph Lauren: New York Times iPad app takeover transforms brand into rich media publisher.

8. Hugo Boss: Top mobile scores and interactive YouTube channel venture differentiate the brand online.

9. Louis Vuitton: Embracing the spirit of travel with Amble app; Leads on Foursquare.

10. Michael Kors: Destination: Kors. A mix of scents creates something we can smell but not describe. I can tell you that the base is patchouli fraction orpur, benzoin Laos orpur, tonka bean and musk, and the heart (a perfume must have a heart that should break, in a way, our heart) is heliotrope (one of my favorite scents), violet and freesia. But I don’t want to be too technical about the fragrance. I prefer a sentimental approach.” Sounds a bit over the top for our tastes, but being major Lagerfeld fans we have to show our support. Would you buy it?

Give Me a Sequined Bodysuit & Three Gents in Tuxes

FASHION

Chanel

david roemer

fashion gone rogue

Jean Paul Gaultier

Julia Stegner

julian schratter

Prabal Gurung

ryan kennedy

sequined bodysuit

vladimir ivanov

vogue latin america

vogue latin america october 2011
<guid

Presents Fashion Fascists: Coco for Nazi Puffs" />

In historian Hal Vaughan‘s new book, Sleeping with the Enemy, the author claims that Chanel was nothing but a “consummate opportunist” who “didn’t believe in anything except fashion.” Well, those are qualities we can all admire.

But Vaughan goes on to say that while “Chanel didn’t care about Hitler or politics or Nazism,” her natural desire for power led her into Adolf’s waiting arms. Or rather, into the arms of Baron Hans Guenther von Dincklage, a German military intelligence officer.

According to Vaughan, ”He manipulated Chanel, and Chanel manipulated him.” The Baron arranged for Coco to stay at the Hotel Ritz during the German occupation of France, a privilege granted to few non-Germans; and from there he helped manage her business relations with the occupying forces. In turn, von Dincklage enlisted Chanel as a spy, code-named “Westminster” — as in “The 2nd Duke of”, one of her (many) former lovers.

As a Nazi agent, Coco orchestrated the release of her nephew from a German POW camp and visited Madrid in 1941 under the orders to use her connections to “gain political intelligence.” That mission proved for naught as she apparently only shot the shit about how cray-cray the Germans were.

Really, as Vaughan elucidates, Chanel wasn’t so much a spy as a “facilitator”: “She knew everybody in Spain, she knew everybody in England, and she helped out the Nazis.” After the war’s end, Gabby fled to Switzerland and was never tried for her Nazi affiliations, due to the intervention on her behalf by either Winston Churchill or the Royal Family.

That bouclé tweed really went a long way, didn’t it? But what was the appeal? I mean, the Nazis weren’t the funnest people to be around and those black and brown uniforms were far from flattering. And you know who you can thank for that? Hugo Boss.

<a

Boss was Hitler’s favored tailor and also provided uniforms for the Nazi army.

To outfit the Third Reich, Boss used 140 slave laborers from Poland who had been kidnapped by the Gestapo and 40 French prisoners of war at the company’s factory in Boss’ hometown of Metzingen, Germany.

This makes Yves Saint Laurent hurling a glass at an incompetent assistant look like kid’s stuff.

Although from April 1940 on he used forced workers — primarily women — Boss did make attempts, albeit belated attempts, to improve the often harsh conditions in which his <del>slaves</del> <del>employees</del> slaves had to live. For instance, in 1944, he tried to alleviate them of the camp built on the grounds of the factory by asking to house them himself.

As Koester explains: ”We can only repeat that the behaviour towards the forced labourers was at times harsh and involved coercion, but that concern for their welfare was also displayed, rendering simplistic characterisations impossible.”

After the war, Boss claimed that he had only taken the uniform contract to save his company, but he had actually joined the Nazi party in 1931, some two years before Hitler came to power. Boss was eventually tried and fined for his Nazi sympathizing only to die of a tooth abscess in 1948.

With the publication of Hugo Boss 1924-1945, all of these unsavory tidbits about the Hugo Boss brand have come to the harsh light of day, prompting the company to issue a statement in which it expresses ” its profound regret to those who suffered harm or hardship at the factory run by Hugo Ferdinand Boss under National Socialist rule”.

An apology is nice and all, but IKEA‘s Nazi founder doubled his company’s charitable spending to almost £100 million/year after his past as a Nazi recruiter was revealed. Maybe it’s time for Hugo Boss to put its euros where its swastika is/was. #justsayin [<a

Lying through his rottening teeth, Uncle Karl said he was flattered and surprised by “how much of the very young public” turned out to see him. What can I say, the kids love Karl.<span

I have a certain weakness for department stores.” As do I. Give me a one-stop shop so I can avoid being around people as much as possible, thank you and goodbye.

As for his collection, it’s apparently flying off the shelf– much like the Kaiser’s diffusion line for H&M. According to Terry Lundgren, big boss man of Macy’s, they were “blown away by the sell-throughs with Karl. Even before his p.a. [public appearance], we did more than $1 million in sales.”

What can I say, the kids love a high collar and a printed tee. [<a
