Sure, this gown costs $35,000, was constructed by a team of half-blind old ladies whose skills are so specialized they can be classified as endangered species and contains actual diamonds, but Joan Rivers still thinks you look like a refugee from some drag queen concentration camp. No, events like the Oscars require a little discretion and the simpler you keep it, the better. Of course, there are exceptions, but not every actress is a Charlize Theron, a Cate Blanchett, a Nicole Kidman or a Tilda Swinton — risk-takers who can pull off haute couture with the greatest of ease. For the rest of ‘em, here are 10 safe gowns sure to please along with 10 only the brave of soul and intrepid of style should even consider.

It’s been one hell of a year for a certain occasionally-bearded, dog-loving thespian cum hunk cum meme. While some — read: everyone — feel he was unjustly robbed of another award earlier this year, Ryan Gosling is getting a double dose of appreciation from the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards. He’s pulled quite the hat-trick, getting nominated twice this year for Best Actor in a Comedy and Drama. Bradley Cooper was, to the surprise of everyone — read: no one — was not nominated for Limitless.

As big as the Globes’ crush is on Gosling, it can’t hold a candle to the raging boner the Hollywood Foreign Press has for George Clooney, who’s nominated for three awards — Best Director and Best Screenplay for The Ides of March and Best Actor for The Descendants. Why don’t you put it back in your pants, HFA?

Meryl Streep Lands Her First Vogue Cover

Over forty years, over 40 roles, and over 400 Oscar nominations later, the world’s greatest living actress finally covers American Vogue. Meryl Streep sits on a rock recently left vacant by Charlize Theron in a belted shirtdress for the January issue of Vogue, meaning that Anna Wintour‘s finally dropped that half-decade-old Devil Wears Prada grudge.

Streep is pretty much a shoe-in for her 17th Academy Award nomination — and that’s no hyperbole — for The Iron Lady, a biopic on English prime minister, Margaret Thatcher.

In the film, Meryl plays Margaret from age 49 to 85, an experience that certainly took its toll both physically — ”We were on a tiny budget, we had very long days and there was no rest. Standing for 12 hours at a time was very painful and all I wanted was a great masseur” — and emotionally – ”With something like It’s Complicated, I really left it at the set. But this I carried with me more, because it was more personal,” Streep said referring to her 2009 romantic comedy starring noted frequent flier, Alec Baldwin.

Meanwhile, in her Vogue story, Streep puts aside her Lady pains to loll in a few jokes about age. Now 62, Meryl claims that she’s the “oldest person” to land the mag’s cover and reminisces about being offered three roles as witches after turning 40. Taking it to mean that women her age were “grotesque on some level,” she then turned to her husband and said, “It’s over.” That Streep’s done some of her best work in those resulting 22 years proved that not only was it not over, but really just beginning. Oscar winner, Dior J’adore‘r and all-around brick house, Charlize Theron garners her fifth Vogue cover, this time shot by Annie Leibovitz for the mag’s December issue.

Fashion editor Camilla Nickerson outfits Theron in Alexander McQueen, Marchesa, Christoper Kane and Salvatore Ferragamo for the aquatic-themed shoot. I’m assuming the water represents rebirth and all that jazz — considering Theron’s split from Stuart Townsend and her new film with director Jason Reitman, Young Adult – but Leibovitz comes up dry once again.*

And what’s happening with the underwater shot? Looks like Leibovitz employed the same Photoshopper from those Kardashian Kollection Sears catalogs.

From Rita Hayworth in Gilda to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, Princess Diana to the Duchess of Cambridge, Grace Kelly to Grace Jones, Bob Mackie to Karl Lagerfeld, Rubenstein delves into fashion history and comes up with an informative and entertaining read. But what makes a dress unforgettable? J’Adoring the New J’Adore Dior Commercial

Charlize Theron is joined by three iconic Hollywood blondes in the opulent new J’Adore Dior fragrance ad, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud in the Palace at Versailles‘ famed Hall of Mirrors.

“It was incredibly glamorous and fantastic. I don’t think I’ll experience something like that again in my lifetime,” said the Oscar-winner of filming the commercial, which debuted Sunday night at www.dior.com.

Adding to the surreal glamour are digital recreations of the late Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe. The three movie legends just happen to be hanging out backstage of the Dior show when Theron storms in, every inch the movie star — giant sunglasses and all — throwing her purse at the first person, place or thing she sees. Then she’s stripped, be-gowned and thrown down the runway to Gossip‘s “Heavy Cross.”

Turning Classic Movies Presents: When Model Turns Actress

Liya Kebede is the latest in a long line of catwalkers to add the foreboding hyphenate “actress” to her title. But unlike so many models before her, she has taken a quieter route towards the big screen. Desert Flower, opening this Friday exclusively at New York’s Angelika and in Los Angeles, is based on the story of Waris Dirie, a victim of female circumcision who was sold into marriage before becoming a model in the late-80s. Heady stuff. Kebede could become a legitimate actress (and thus earn the title, “former model” like Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman), but what about the other model-actresses who have left their own memorable impressions on cinema?

Cool As Ice [1991] Starring Naomi Campbell as “Singer at First Club

Tagline: “When a girl has a heart of stone, there’s only one way to melt it. Just add Ice.” [Seriously.]

Before 8 Mile, there was another biopic about a white rapper trying to make his way out of…the ghetto (?). And lucky us, not only were we treated to Naomi’s acting, but her vocal chops as well on the film’s classic composition…wait for it…“Cool as Ice”. Robert Van Winkle’s music and film career fizzled shortly after this cinematic exercise in ego-stroking though Naomi has continued to make the occasional cameo when not dodging a subpoena.

Fair Game [1995] Starring Cindy Crawford as Kate McQuean

Tagline: “He’s a cop on the edge. She’s a woman with a dangerous secret. And now they’re both…

Cindy stars as a civil law attorney who seeks the aid of the forgotten Baldwin — poor Billy – a cop who vows to protect her from some renegade KGB team out to exterminate her. The film proved a huge hit…at the 1996 Razzie Awards where it was nominated for Worst Actress, Worst New Star (both honors for Cindy) and Worst Screen Couple. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) that year Showgirls swept nearly every category. Liz Berkley has never been the same.

Conan the Destroyer [1984] Starring Grace Jones as Zula

Tagline: “The most powerful legend of all is back in a new adventure.”

A childhood favorite of mine…before I knew that my fondness for Arnold Schwarzenegger in a fur loincloth was anything out of the ordinary, the sequel to Conan the Barbarian features the always terrifying Grace Jones as a scantily clad warrior princess. Apparently Grace’s enthusiasm was a little too much for poor ole muscle-bound Arnold, who complained Jones was “too tough” during filming. Grow a pair, Schwarzenegger…or just borrow Grace’s.

The Fifth Element [1997] Starring Milla Jovovich as Leeloo

Tagline: “There is no future without it.”

Jovovich has starred in over 30 films — half of them from the Resident Evil franchise — but her best role to date is still in Luc Besson‘s modern sci-fi classic. As the titular element, Milla yells and grunts and generally kicks ass throughout the entire film and she hasn’t laid down her action hero mantle since. Although the most acting she’s done since then has taken place in L’Oreal commercials.

Taxi [2004] Starring Gisele as Vanessa

Tagline: “Take a Ride on the Wild Side.”

Hmm, when your script requires a quartet of sexy Brazilian bank robbers, why not enlist the world’s foremost sexy Brazilian? Gisele tackled the challenging role of the gang’s “cold” and “calculating” leader in her film debut, but with only one other film under her tiny, couture belt (she has a cameo in Devil Wears Prada), it doesn’t look like she’ll be rendered in celluloid any time soon.

The Red Carpet Fashion Awards: Honoring the Best in Rouge Floor Coverings

Red Carpet Fashion Awards has graced us with their lists of the best in 2010′s red carpet showdowns. I guess it was only natural for the red carpet to morph into its own entity and for that entity to get its own award. I can’t actually wait til there’s a televised Red Carpet Fashion Awards program, where the Kodak Theater is strictly for arrivals and the awards are presented on the red carpet. Meta.

Cate Blanchett was named Best Dressed for her vintage Christian Lacroix from the SK-II’s “Clear for Life” event; followed by Zoe Saldana in her controversial Givenchy Haute Couture gown from this year’s Oscars; and relative unknown Fan Bing Bing in Dragon Robe by Laurence Hsu that she wore at the Robin Hood Cannes Film Festival premiere rounds out the top 3.

Sarah Jessica Parker got especial kudos for her tireless efforts promoting that giant, turbaned flop Sex and the City 2: The Menopause Strikes Back and earned the ungainly title of “Promotional Tour Star” of the year.

And my future BFF, Leighton Meester was honored for apparently getting her shit together with the “Stella’s Got Her Groove Back”…award, I guess. The RCFA also named Peter Dundas for Emilio Pucci as the “Designer of the Year” and Gucci Première as “Couturier of the Year.”

Overall, interesting choices, but this is the red carpet after all where it’s not just about the clothes, but the celebrity who’s wearing them, and where high fashion isn’t always translated to great effect. As matter of course, there are only a handful of actresses who can truly pull off haute couture, and Cate Blanchett is at the forefront.

Other notables include the always stunning Tilda Swinton, the statuesque Nicole Kidman and former model Charlize Theron. SJP is also up there because she’s got the balls to pull off anything.

Even a bird on her head.

Oscar Red Carpet Hit or Miss?

Some noteworthy dresses were Oscar de la Renta (of course!) worn by Cameron Diaz, which was gorgeous but didn’t seem to fit her properly.

Demi Moore in Versace, without her best accessory, her hubby Ashton.

Of course there were some juicy lapses. Charlize Theron seemed to have successfully combine cabaret look with princess, waz up with those boob roses?

SJP looked like she’s hiding something under that Chanel dress and her ring looked like she was holding a cigarette.

Could Nancy Carrell find even more “invisible” dress? Someone, get her a red belt or something!

And last but not least: Nicole Ricci is going to war in her full-body armor!!!

It must be really nice to be a celebrity. Andre 3000 is getting some major help from celebrity friends, Charlize Theron and Stewart Townsend, when his new clothing collection launches at Barneys New York on September 4th. The two famous love birds will be hosting a party in honor of the Polaroid picture man at Barneys to celebrate his exclusive deal with the retailer to carry his goods.

Charlize and Andre will star in Townsend’s send up of “Battle in Seattle”. I guess the Oscar winner was taken back my Andre’s ability with a needle and thread. Be sure to crash this one indies, the celebrity potential is huge and I’m sure the afterparty will be one you won’t want to miss.

Charlize Theron is one of the most beautiful Hollywood stars, and is the newest bombshell to appear on the cover (wearing Louis Vuitton) of Elle UK’s August issue. Here is a backstage look at the photoshoot.

She is known for being a private person, rarely taking about herself and the loved ones around her. Here is a sneak peak the Elle interview where she talks openly about her relationship with Stuart Townsend, babies, her body and why she won’t become another Hollywood party girl.
On why she’ll never marry Stuart, she says: “I want to know that I wake up every morning because I want to, not because a piece of paper says so.”

Everyone has been trashing this ‘marshmallow’ dress that Charlize Theron wore to the premier of Hancock. Personally, I am in love with this dress (the shoes are another story). It fits her perfectly, shows of her curves, hugs in the right places, and shows off the shoulders (which are one of women’s sexiest parts). I just want to know how that dress is staying in place on her breasts? Double sided tape I guess.

How lame were the MTV Movie Awards last night? It was awkward like a Junior High Dance. But I wasn’t watching it for the lame jokes, I was watching it for the bad fashion. The MTV Movie Awards are one of those rarified red carpet events where nobody knows what to wear. What is the dress code for one of these things? Dressy? Causual? That’s why you will find people dressed in ballgowns as well as jeans. Deliciously awkward. I noticed three key trends at the award show when it came to fashion-celebs either dressed like they were going to Prom, going to a Biker rally, or like Porn star.
