A look from E. Tautz's spring 2012 collection

Designers including Aquascutum, Christopher Raeburn, E. Tautz, J.W. Anderson and TOPMAN will show from Friday, June 15 through Sunday, June 17, immediately preceding the men’s fashion weeks in Milan and Paris — meaning those limey labels can finally capitalize on all the sartorial testosterone running through Europe. Tom Ford and Christopher Kane are among the members of the committee overseeing London Collections: Men, headed by British GQ editor Dylan Jones.

The news of this new men’s fashion weekend delivers on BFC CEO Caroline Rush’s promise that “Menswear in London will be put in the spotlight this year,” made shortly after James Long became the first menswear designer to win one of the Council’s Fashion Forward  prizes. [Telegraph]

Holland, Long, Gray and Katrantzou are in some great company as past winners of the Fashion Forward prize have included Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Erdem and Giles. Meanwhile, Long is the first menswear designer to snatch the prize and according to BFC CEO Caroline Rush, the time was ripe: ’Menswear in London will be put in the spotlight this year making now the perfect time to introduce a menswear prize to Fashion Forward.” [Vogue UK]

Fashion editor Camilla Nickerson outfits Theron in Alexander McQueen, Marchesa, Christoper Kane and Salvatore Ferragamo for the aquatic-themed shoot. I’m assuming the water represents rebirth and all that jazz — considering Theron’s split from  Stuart Townsend and her new film with director Jason Reitman, Young Adult – but Leibovitz comes up dry once again.*

And what’s happening with the underwater shot? Looks like Leibovitz employed the same Photoshopper from those Kardashian Kollection Sears catalogs.

According to Carole White, founder of Premier Model Management and not the biggest Naomi Campbell fan, ”We’re not just talking about one or two big girls. Jacobs had numerous models holding on options right up until the day of his show meaning they all stayed in New York just in case they got cast.”

White goes on to say, ”Gucci demanded that girls fly to Milan on Saturday to meet Frida to see if she would consider them for her show, which meant Saturday got trashed. Then the girls were expected to fly straight back to London, and if Gucci were interested, fly back to Milan again on Sunday for another round of casting, then for fittings on Monday. Only a tiny fraction of them realistically have a shot at being in that show — we all know it will be full of mega girls. I find it insulting that a designer like Frida thinks London is so insignificant that she would do that.”

For agents and models alike, Gucci and Jacobs are major gets, but that leaves the already packed London schedule of designers feeling like fashion’s bastard step-children. A source at Todd Lynn claims to have “lost 10 out of 19 girls,” with agents calling them in the middle of the night to pull their girls and some models not even showing up for fittings because they’ve flown off to Milan.

Also not helping matters is LOVE magazine editor Katie Grand — damn you Katie Grand — who styled for Jacobs and also styled for the London-based designer Giles Deacon. Grand demanded a five-hour call time — which one “fashion insider” calls ”unnecessary, absurd, selfish and wrong,” citing Paris’ strict two-hour limit — thus monopolizing any girls left in town after Burberry.

Amidst fears that London Fashion Week may be squeezed out all together, the British Fashion Council is beginning to feel the heat. The BFC is being accused of mismanaging the show calendar and for not standing up to the organizers behind the  New York and Milan fashion weeks.

Meanwhile, CEO of the BFC, Caroline Rush, insists that something is being done. She’s not particularly clear what that something is, but the Council has “invested time in developing direct relationships with model agencies to better understand their challenges and encourage them to send more internationally-recognised catwalk models to London. This season, the models at designers such as Jonathan Saunders, Erdem, Christopher Kane and Tom Ford have been of a global standard.”

Well, for those handful of shows, good for you. But for everyone else suffering at the model-grabbing claws of New York and Milan: damn you, Caroline Rush. [Telegraph]

The program follows a garment through its entire lifecycle, from the creative design and tailoring, to a focus on sustainably producing goods on both small and large scale in a socially and environmentally minded manner. An entirely student run fashion magazine, UDress, and fashion shows exist outside of class, working to show and pull fashion out of this college driven town.

Last, and certainly least, Sarah Palin, looking chic on her way to ruin what’s left of America in Christopher Kane. I can hear her cackling even through this illustration.

What do you think of these politically-charged high fashion makeovers? Personally, I think Hillary looks the best out of all of them —  giving goddess realness while sacrificing none of the power she’s been harnessing in those pantsuits over the last decade or so.

Defining Fashion Moment: Whenever Mr. Sheffield had any sort of high-brow fête, Fran would make her entrance atop the staircase to the studio audience’s whoops and hollars. Then she would precede to mess up and inevitably repair whatever situation her employer was involved in.

Fran Drescher’s endlessly optimistic nanny was the continuation of a long legacy of whacky ladies who were no strangers to glamour. A legacy that started in the 1930s with screwball heroines like Carole Lombard, Katharine Hepburn and Irene Dunne and which continued for decades more with Lucille Ball.

That The Nanny is still in re-runs is a testament to Fran’s (Drescher and Fine’s) own legacy. Now if we only had more time I could delve into the genius wardrobes of Ms. Fine’s relations: Yetta and Sylvia Fine.

I can see the apple doesn’t fall far from the sequined tree. And for extra credit, study up on Should Be on the Nanny.

Ye reportedly met with the head of the course, Professor Louise Wilson, to discuss his future matriculation before jetting off to Paris to hang with Anna Dello Russo and take in the shows at Fashion Week.

A source tells The Sun:

“Kanye spends a lot of time with fashion students and often hooks up with Central’s arty pupils when he is in London. The rapper already has work experience with Fendi and Louis Vuitton on his CV. Now that he has been interviewed the school’s board will have to decide whether to allow him to start the MA fashion course later this year.”

West’s few high-profile internships may not be enough to sway the notoriously intractable Wilson, as rumors abound hat ”he has been turned down for a place because his portfolio wasn’t up to standard.”

If Kanye does make it through the program, however, he will join CSM’s list of luminary alumni, which includes designers Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Gareth Pugh, Christopher Kane,  Zac Posen, Matthew Williamson and Hussein Chalayan.

Let’s just hope he was taking notes while sitting front row so he can get that portfolio up to snuff.

Donatella Versace is joining fashion’s elite in the charity auction trend, trumping Anna’s one week with a full semester-long internship at Versace, plus 2 tickets to a Donatella Versace and Christopher Kane show in Milan, with a meet-and-greet with Donatella Versace herself backstage. She’s also throwing in a signed Versus fragrance bottle by Donatella Versace and a Signed Versus t-shirt by Donatella Versace.

For the past year, anticipation of Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland has been growing and is leading many to be inspired by the 19th century tale. The story is a favorite of mine, so I couldn’t be more thrilled.

We’ve seen it on the runway, with designers like Versace and Christopher Kane using the whimsical world of Wonderland as their main source of inspiration. I really like Maison Martin Margiela’s take on the Tim Burton Alice we’ve seen in trailers and movie stills.

Merchandise for Alice in Wonderland has also been seen everywhere—from makeup to entire clothing lines— but I especially love the jewelry Stella McCartney designed.

Nicholas Kirkwood’s shoes here are a work of art. You can see the many influences incorporated, like the roses, checkered print, and tea set.

We might be a little cutthroat, but there’s no reason for Christopher Kane to be afraid of the blogger cult. If he were a newspaper editor or a magazine columnist, he’d totally have something to worry about, but hey, we’re fashion bloggers and we love the hell out of our favorite designers! This is what Kane told Vogue UK:

“It’s a bit mad, isn’t it? It feels like it’s happened all of a sudden and at some shows this season the front row was just all bloggers. I think it will die down though, and people know what they are doing. No one who wants to read a serious review of a show is going to look at what a 14-year-old thinks. But it has become more critical; people can say what they want about anyone on a blog without consequences and that’s quite scary. There are real repercussions for a designer if a photo of something is leaked by a blog; it can be copied in a fortnight and that can really harm a business. You have to be much more careful now.”

If you hadn’t told me this was Christopher Kane’s Spring 2010 collection, I would have expected these looks to be some sort of picnic-table cloth, Project Runway challenge. Leave it up to Kane to bring some avant garde goodies to the runway, but I’m a little unimpressed this season. Sure, Kane has some spectacular corset structuring, but I am totally not feeling the pastel picnic plaids or the ungodly floral prints. Unlike last Spring, pieces from Kane’s 2010 collection most likely won’t fall among the “it” crowd.

Well, well, well Kate Moss is not the only designer to be tapped by Topshop. Featured are Christopher Kane’s Topshop offerings. I like the all! If you put this collection next to his designer collection, you certainly wouldn’t be able to tell that they were created by the same person which is great, as it speaks to his range as a designer.

However, there is one exception the tee shirt with the alligator’s mouth on it. Remember the pieces from his designer collection with the gorilla?

Maybe the whole animal with their mouth open thing, will become one of his signatures.

It’s really not like me to be undecided about a certain look…but this dress has me a bit puzzled! There’s something about this Christopher Kane look that is quite original and interesting, yet I feel as though there is something missing. I don’t think this fits Leighton like it should, or maybe it’s just the awkward color scheme. Not sure! U?

Scottish designer Christopher Kane has signed to do his biggest collection yet with Topshop. Previously, he produced a collection for Topshop after the success of his first collection in Spring/Summer 2007. And the new collection, release will be in late August, is already causing excitement among the fashion savvy.

Christopher is also excited: “This is more than a capsule collection. It’s proper: with bags, shoes, knitwear and dresses. It’s nothing like any other work I’ve done in the past. Everything is a bit “wow”. But If I tell you any more, I’ll be giving the theme away. There might be some color, some embellishment. It’s full of surprises. Put it this way we did the designs, sent away our drawings and when the samples came back last week they looked brilliant. Girls are gonna go crazy for it!’

20 years after Gianni Versace launched the Versus diffusion line – and five years after the last collection – Donatella Versace has revived the label.

At a presentation in Milan this Sunday, Donatella and collaborator Christopher Kane debuted accessories for Fall/Winter 2009.

Dazed & Confused reported that this year’s line “draws direct inspiration from the back catalog of Versus and includes super high black platform heels with bold diamond detailing, black geometric calfskin bags, chunky bejeweled Chelsea boots and opulent crystal jewelry.” So it seems to be a mix honest to both designer’s styles.

Versus will release men’s and women’s clothing in Spring 2010.

As if London Fashion Week isn’t enough to look forward to, Grazia just reported that Twenty8Twelve will be showcasing this year. This years dates are Friday Feb 20th through Wednesday the 25th.

Sunday is set to be a treat with Christopher Kane, Richard Nicoll, new must-see Danielle Scutt and the debut show from Savannah and Sienna Miller’s label Twenty8Twelve!

In honor of the electronics supplier’s 75th anniversary, Comet has recruited Christopher Kane to design a limited edition radio.  It’s only 1 Watt, but it’s pretty cute; I want to put my lunch in it!

Judging by the latest spring/summer collections, the fashion industry has taken a deliberately ugly turn. Dowdy or even monstrous silhouettes, discordant combinations of fabrics and colors along with unsightly hair and makeup ruled the runway, while show-goers frequently hid behind oversized glasses in a mock-display of concealment.

An abundance of looks featured odd shapes, such as Hussein Chalayan’s fierce molded latex spikes and Alexander McQueen’s skirts with colossal hips and body suits set off by sharp winged shoulders. Many collections also featured grossly oversized garb—a bulky, rigid white dress at Calvin Klein draped over the model as naturally as a cardboard box, a bulbous top at Fendi shifted stiffly from side to side with the model’s steps and a model swimming in a huge top and cuffed capris at Isaac Mizrahi resembled a little girl dressing up in her mother’s clothes.

Jumbling together unexpected materials was another trend: Junya Watanabe layered rich African-print skirts over baggy cuffed jeans; Gaultier mixed things up by showing a body suit worn on top of a pair of pants; and Christopher Kane had a garish, transparent pumpkin-orange dress trimmed in black fur. Some styles were more sinister in their hideousness. The unsettling, aggressive silhouettes at Comme des Garàons featured cutouts that revealed a misshapen, unattractive portion of the model’s stomach. Maison Martin Margiela’s spectacular and spooky collection featured decidedly unsexy nude-and-white body suits, and disturbing looks such as models bound in ribbons of fabric, their faces concealed by stockings or a cascade of hair.

The unsightly trend even extended to accessories and beauty. Gaultier featured a fur stole, complete with all four legs, while Rick Owens had his models’ feet wrapped in trash bag like leather fabrics. Behnaz Sarafpour and Balenciaga showed models who looked like they hadn’t slept in days, their eyes rimmed in shiny brown shadow. At Fendi, runway mane had been teased into spikes, and a rats nest was the hairstyle of choice at Alberta Ferretti.

This ugly aesthetic is also reflected in everyday society. Too—chipped nails are being flaunted on the streets of Manhattan as well as the fingertips of celebrities, while dentists report that patients are requesting their veneers appear less-than-flawless (adding a rounded corner or slight rotation of a tooth here and there, gradating their shade instead of making them snow white). More women are also opting to go sans makeup, wearing baggy tops or pants that disguise rather than show-off their shape.

It doesn’t take more than an awkward smile from Ugly Betty to prove that perfection is pretty boring in its stagnant singularity. The real intrigue sets in when you let yourself branch out from the paragon and explore more multifaceted possibilities. Even if the look isn’t “pretty,” it grabs attention and penetrates the surface—you can’t just glide blissfully by.

What is the point of fashion if you can’t have fun with it? British designer, Christopher Kane, revisited his youth as inspiration for his Spring 2009 collection. The prehistoric themes from The Flintstones and Planet of the Apes dominated the runway as Kane showed bright animal prints, 3-D scalloped “scales”, stegosaurus platforms and even gorilla photo prints! His ingenious collection, both young and flirty, was quite the impressive style for such a young designer. Yabba-dabba doo!

For those travelers expecting to see dinosaur exhibits and stuffed jaguar carcasses at London’s Natural History Museum this week, they are in for a rude (but pleasant!) awakening. Instead of specimen collections, the museum is home to various British designers, models, press and buyers. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the second round of Fashion Week hits Europe. Goodbye New York…Hello London!

So London Fashion Week isn’t exactly hard to get into (yes, anyone can purchase admittance, catwalk and goody-bag tickets on the London Fashion Week website) but the Brits are whipping up designs just as innovative and stylish as New York Fashion Week.

This year’s London Fashion Week is rumored to have some of the best styles to date. Similar to the New York Fashion week craze of jumpsuits, London’s first day alone unveiled their take on these flight suits. Unlike New York’s distressed denim and pastel colors for Spring 2009, London designers are whipping up looks using loud colors like hot pink and bright yellow.

And for those designers who need an extra boost getting their collection out there, the British Fashion Council has a sponsorship program helping designers promote their looks. New Gen has launched the careers of British designers Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald and many others. Who wouldn’t want a £5,000 – £10,000 cash sponsorship, free utilization of the tents and recognition as a “must-see” designer at London Fashion Week?

London Fashion Week keeps the catwalks bopping until Friday, September 19th. If the Brits can whip up more killer looks (like the ones above), then I am skipping tea and biscuits, grabbing my rain coat and heading to London!

The British Fashion Council has announced that the Fashion Forward sponsorship has been awarded to four talented designers. Christopher Kane, Erdem, Marios Schwab, and Roksanda Ilincic have accepted the gift with open arms. The sponsorship allots skillful up incoming designers funding to show off their flair. Though these designers have already established an international name, it is a gift well deserved. Much of the money is pushed toward putting on a fashion show at London fashion week were the designers are able to show of their ability and ultimately, the reason they received the award.

The Scotts have spoken and this years nominations for Scottish designer of the year are in and Chirstopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders (above) are up for top honors. We have the full list below but we are most excited about the awards newest category,  best use of Tartan by an international designer. House of Holland is up against mainstreamers Dolce & Gabanna and Ralph Lauren for his excellent use of the pattern on his fall runway show. In terms of experience, Christopher Kane is a design whippersnapper, but what he says goes. It isn’t as if he chooses easy trends either – you can blame him for last summer’s neon virus. And now he gives us pale denim, a trend that possesses the cruel ability to expand indiscriminately the look of one’s thighs is one that we never thought we’d want to explore. But we should think about ways to make it work, because worn against tanned skin and sparkles, pale denim is surprisingly becoming.

The pale tiered ruffle skirt, an early Madonna mainstay, has been given the Kane treatment. It is now almost demure, lengthwise, and the heavy ruffles look sumptuous. If you can’t afford the price tag, Topshop has a good copy. Wear the skirt with a loose T-shirt and interesting heels for maximum street cred.

There are four ways to wear pale denim and if Agyness Deyn is not your style benchmark, go glam. Jeans or a pale denim jacket aren’t obvious starting points for looking luxurious, but worn with the right pieces they give eveningwear a fresh look. Spring is the perfect time to start the mixing process. If you’re dying to wear that silky little number in the back of your wardrobe but can’t bear to show too much flesh, whack on the denim jacket. Wear it tight, a bit cropped and with the collar turned up.

The minimal trend has been quietly gaining strength over the past two seasons and pale denim is a good way to keep the ball rolling. The aim is to look slightly futuristic and effortless. This look is probably the hardest to pull off because of its inherently simple aesthetic, but done right, it has a cool, sharp edge that is hard to beat.
