Converse Lends a Hand…and a Foot to World AIDS Day

Converse, in collaboration with (PRODUCT)RED and acclaimed artist José Parlá, will roll out a limited edition of its iconic Chuck Taylor All Stars to commemorate World AIDS Day this Thursday, December 1. Only 500 pairs will be available, with 10% of sales benefiting The Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

Brooklyn-based Parlá is known for his distinctive style that blends calligraphy, collage, textures, and color in paintings that tackle politics, urbanization, current events and a slew of other complex topics.

To grace the special pairs of Converse, Parlá chose his painting “Ephemeral Pitches, and Notes, Rhythm and Phonetics,” which — inspired by abstract noises, music, rhythms, languages and sounds of cities — explores the constant changes to urban life. Those themes are particularly resonant for Parla, who grew up wearing Chucks as a kid.

To date, RED, (PRODUCT)RED and its partners, which include Gap, Apple, Hallmark, Starbucks and Nike, has raised nearly $180 million for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. And starting this Thursday, you can do your part to help — and get a fly pair of kicks in the process. - Poor Jo-Ann Fabrics. There they were, just trying to unload some tacky fleece patterns on a craft-loving public, when Coach comes along and sues them for trademark infringement. Apparently, the luxury brand finds the elongated Os of a pattern at an Ohio-based Jo-Ann Fabrics far too similar to their Signature C logo and was afraid it would cause”consumer confusion.” Is someone flip-flopping or Birkenstocking into their local Jo-Ann’s really going to be that confused let alone know what Coach’s Signature C looks like? Not when they have all that decoupaging ahead of them. [WWD]

- First Lady of America, and my heart, Michelle Obama may have a new stylist after parting seams with Meredith Koop. One of Mo’s favorite go-to designers, Peter Soronen, told a panel at the New York Public Library‘s “Why Style Matters” discussion: ”We heard that she [Koop]‘s gone already. So I’m not even sure who it is right now.” But Soronen’s colleague, Ellen Carey, doesn’t rule out the return of Mrs. Obama’s original stylist, Ikram Goldman. However, if she doesn’t mind catsuits, sequins and being draped in a wild assortment of dead animals, I’m more than willing to take over as Michelle Obama’s stylist. [The Cut]

It doesn’t get more classic than this, Woolrich and Converse teamed up to create these Chucks for fall. They’re aren’t available yet, but look for them for back to school. I love plaid, and grew up in the Midwest, so obviously I was around a lot of Woolrich, and I’ll definitely be picking up a pair of these come August.
