“The Artist,” “The Descendants,” Meryl and George Win Big at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards

Hollywood’s wildest night was a bit on the tame side as the 2012 Golden Globes lapsed into occasional coma. Host Ricky Gervais was more well-behaved and seemingly less drunk this year than last — a bad decision on both counts — though there was some well-played shtick regarding Jodie Foster‘s Beaver. The stars, however, came prepared with their own jokes with the best comeback of the night courtesy of Best Original Song winner, Madonna. After being introduced by Gervais, Madge quipped: “If I’m just like a virgin, Ricky why don’t you come over here and do something it? I haven’t kissed a girl in quite a few years…” A collective snap arose from the Beverly Hilton after the Material Girl dropped that sass bomb, though to be fair, she’s been on a roll as of late. The rest of the night was a series of mild shock — mostly thanks to Angelina Jolie‘s ~~inspiring~~ scary skeletal frame — and even milder surprises thanks to a few upsets in the TV category where shows no one watches nabbed some of the top prizes while in the film category. No one was shocked, however, when Meryl Streep won Best Actress in a Drama, except Meryl Streep, who garnered another Globe for that reaction on her way up to accept for The Iron Lady. The 69th Annual Golden Globes Nominations Also in Love with Ryan Gosling

It’s been one hell of a year for a certain occasionally-bearded, dog-loving thespian cum hunk cum meme. While some — read: everyone — feel he was unjustly robbed of another award earlier this year, Ryan Gosling is getting a double dose of appreciation from the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards. He’s pulled quite the hat-trick, getting nominated twice this year for Best Actor in a Comedy and Drama. Bradley Cooper was, to the surprise of everyone — read: no one — was not nominated for Limitless.

As big as the Globes’ crush is on Gosling, it can’t hold a candle to the raging boner the Hollywood Foreign Press has for George Clooney, who’s nominated for three awards — Best Director and Best Screenplay for The Ides of March and Best Actor for The Descendants. Why don’t you put it back in your pants, HFA?

Red Carpet Report Card: Claire Danes in Lanvin

We are in the thick of awards season, which means there is tons of fun to be had with the Red Carpet Report Card. Starlets put on their best for the 13th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Claire Danes wore a silvery Lanvin shift from the spring 2011 RTW collection. How does her look match up to the runway? Get the grade after the jump.

Claire always looks gorgeous and definitely has the body for the straight cut of this dress that could make others look boxy. How does her look compare to the runway?

Claire added a thin brown belt to give this dress a waist, which I think was an excellent choice. I would have liked to see her wear a chunkier, darker shoe, similar to how it was shown with the spring 2011 collection. The cuff she is wearing looks a little awkward, but it could just be that it’s turned to the back and we can’t see it. I commend her for trying the slicked back hair, but I don’t like the way it looks on her with this ensemble. The grade?

Not bad at all. Claire always looks gorgeous, so she has nothing to worry about.

What I Learned from the Golden Globes

Last night’s Golden Globes ceremony was a master class in awards show etiquette, or rather, the lack-thereof. Between the magnums of champagne on each table, host Ricky Gervais‘ ever-present glass of beer and the air of forced pleasantries, the Beverly Hilton was teetering on the verge of a knock-down drag out brawl all night. Somehow everything managed to go off without a hitch, and along the way some wisdom was imparted.

1. Ricky Gervais will never be asked to host anything ever again, short of a Bar Mitzvah on Long and/or Staten Island. Gervais’ brilliant and acerbic monologue had me in stitches, but you don’t make fun of Angelina Jolie, Scientology and Cher and expect to get away with it. What made Gervais opening monologue and openly drunken interludes so great was the fact that he was spot-on. But as Hollywood has proven time and time again, it takes itself far too seriously.

2. Michelle Williams might actually stand a chance at the Oscars. Front-runners Natalie Portman and Annette Bening both took home Best Actress (Drama and Comedy, respectively), however, the Oscars don’t separate performances by genre. Portman and Bening have been splitting the awards down the middle this awards season, leaving me to wonder if Michelle Williams might just slip in should they divide the Academy’s vote. Or, even better, what if there was a tie à la Kate Hepburn and Babs Streisand in 1969?

3. Peg Bundy is amazing. There’s nothing I love more than seeing an actor or actress finally get her due. Katey Segal is perhaps best known for her role as Peg Bundy on classic 90s sitcom, Married…with Children, in addition to 8 Simple Rules and as the voice of Leela on Futurama. In short, she’s been working her ass off for years with little to no recognition. So when she won Best Actress in a Drama for Sons of Anarchy, I couldn’t help but feel not only happy but proud of that leopard-print spandex-wearing, big-haired, chain-smoking angel from on high. See also, Melissa Leo winning for The Fighter.

4. Glee is the best thing to happen to the gays since the birth of Liza. Best Supporting Actresses, Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch delivered two of the best acceptance speeches of the night; the former a heartwarming and inspiring message to gay teens and the latter a comedic tour de force ending with Lynch thanking her wife and kids. When Glee finally won Best Comedy, you could just hear all the little gays around the country squeal in pitch-perfect delight.

5. Robert DeNiro can continue making Meet the Fockers movies til he dies. Watching the montage of Bobby DeNiro’s films over the past 40 years (which for some reason included The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle), I was reminded how prolific and amazing an actor he is. His legacy will remain in tact with such films as Mean Streets, The Godfather – Part II, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, The Last King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino. Hopefully time or excessive drinking will erase the past 15 years or so from our collective conscience.

And who do we have to thank for this but Kathy Najimy, who’s already given us SO much. Sister Act. Hocus Pocus. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. When will the giving end, Kathy? Hopefully never.

Ch’Arms comes in these four sassy colors, btu act fast, the last time I checked, there were only 7 left in white.

Meaning they probably made 8 in total.

Sidebar: Doesn’t the blonde model look a bit like Claire Danes? I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s a slippery slope after Latisse.

New York City on 43 Crosby Street. Frida Giannini has collaborated with Mark Ronson on a limited collection of sneakers.

The opening was last week and boy were there tons of celebs, including: Mary J. Blige, Claire Danes (so cute and tiny in person), Wyclef Jean, Evan Rachel Wood, Mischa Barton, Poppy Delevingne, Leigh Lezark (this girl can totally rock 5 inch heels), Agyness Deyn, Alexander Wang, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Alex Skarsgard (True Blood fame) and many many more. Red velvet cupcakes and turtle cheesecake was served along with white only wine and champagne.

Claire Danes looks stunning as the face of Gucci Jewelry. The ads are whimsical with light but effective touches of mystery and sultriness. Danes makes the jewelry look delicate and effortless, like she lives in it every day without fussing with much else. Ads for fine jewelry usually don’t phase me, but this set makes me long to put a few of those fab rings on my Christmas list.

I have always loved Claire Danes from the start. From a grunge-loving teen in My So-Called Life to a love-distressed damsel in Romeo and Juliet, she always completely submerges herself in her roles for a fantastic job well done. But her style has not always been so fabulous. The short, dirty-blonde hair, weird prints and shiny leather jackets was not working out. A stylist out there deserves a huge pat on the back because she is looking fantastic these days. She really has turned into a style star!
