We're all rooting for Lindsay Lohan to come out of rehab a changed woman.  There is no denying the young actress' talent and potential.  Despite the train wreck of a life she's led since her incarceration, she has the business sense to turn a profit in her 6126 clothing collection.  Let's just erase the whole stint at Emmanuel Ungaro out of our minds.  We all know she isn't ready to design high fashion but contemporary styles is her thing.

The annual FFC fashion and shopping event, hosted by media personality Suzy Malick, will feature ten designers, and a large portion of the proceeds will be donated to cancer foundations and research.

This FFC event will feature collections from ten designers including New York Fashion Week’s own Tadashi Shoji, Whistle Flute, and Byron Lars. New to the roster are famed designers Thuy, Karen Millen, and a plus-size collection by Lotis Clothing. Each designer will showcase pieces from their current collection on well-placed fashion models, and pieces will be available for purchase at the sample sale event. Proceeds will be benefiting the I’m Too Young for This Cancer Foundation and The Cancer Research Institute.

Participating designers and corporate sponsors include Tadoshi Shoji, Byron Lars, Lotus Grace, Khari by Kahrianne Kerr, H. Fredriksson, Thuy, Karen Millen,Zink Magazine, YMCA, The FAB Network, Love Life Now, YouAreOnTheList.com, Models International, I Concepts Media,  iFashion Network, and many more. I would like to describe the process of photo shoots that are done for either a magazine or advertising and what happens in the process. In most cases the steps are similar for all
productions whether it is me or any other photographer.

I will commence from the point at which the whole team has been hired and are present at the studio for the commencement of the day. In all cases there will be a photographer,
photographers assistant or more, sometimes up to three or four, a
fashion stylist, the person who chose the clothing and accessories for
the photo session, the stylists assistant, a set designer, if one was
needed and their crew. In most cases they had built the set the day
before, but there will be someone there in case of changes that need to
be executed, a make-up artist and assistant, a hair stylist and
assistant, the model or models, the fashion editor and frequently the
digital retouching artist, especially if there are going to be elements
photographed to be added later.

In most cases the crew shows up at 09:00. There is always a breakfast waiting that usually includes juice, croissants, cinnamon buns, baguettes, butter, jam and tons and tons of
coffee and tea.

The hair and make up artists set up their material in the dressing room, while the fashion stylist and the assistant start to unpack the clothing and hang them on clothing racks.
This also allows the fashion stylist to present the clothing to the
photographer. As there are always a lot more clothing than will be
photographed, choices are often made in the morning to determine when
they will be shot and how they will work together in a layout. The
steamer and ironing table are set up and the assistant starts to work on
the clothing to remove any wrinkles. Retouching out wrinkles is a major
pain and it is preferable that the clothing are as close to perfect
before commencing the shoot. While the stylist is preparing the clothes,
the proverbial messengers are arriving with accessories from the
different designer houses. These are usually very expensive jewelry and
often come accompanied with a security guard. I have on occasion had
several security guards attend my shoots especially if the pieces are
worth over 50 thousand dollars per item. It is for that reason, that it
is more problematic to shoot on weekends, as it costs a lot more for the
jewelry companies to hire security guards on the weekend. Through out
the day messengers are coming in and out of the studio, delivering items
and picking them up after they are shot.

The hair stylist has already begun and usually starts before the make up artist. This is done to avoid possible smudging of the work that has been executed by the make up artist. The
two of them discuss what they will be doing and then call in the
photographer and the stylist to give us an over all view of what the
model will look like. This is done to avoid any misunderstandings.
Re-doing hair and make-up is a nightmare and will usually take another
two hours of precious time.

While the hair and make up artist, fashion stylist and assistant are in preparation, I am directing my assistants regarding the lighting I wish to employ, color of backdrop
(if that is what I will be using) or the lighting being used for the
set. For this shoot, let’s say that I will be using large accessories
for the set i.e. couch, large chair, bird cage etc. I ask my assistants
to set up the four HMI 1.2 kilo cinema lights in their general
position. I will make the micro changes I require for each shot with
the model and the subsequent clothing changes. I now ask the assistant
to set up the flash unit or units as well as their placement and the
1000 watt tungsten lamp I will also be using for this shoot. I go with
one of the assistants and choose the background color I will employ,
based on the color of the clothing I will use for that background.

The assistants set up the seamless backdrop and I unroll my package of gelatins that I will use on my shoot and decide on which colors I will use for the given backdrop. I ask
the assistant to place the color I requested on to the HMI cinema lights
as well as a full blue gelatin affixed to the tungsten lamp. I have
also instructed the assistants to place two large transparent plexiglass
panels on to the floor for this shoot. They will cover around 9 square
meters. Once the lights have been set up, I place one of the
assistants in the position where the model will be standing and start to
meter the different light sources. Once satisfied I take several
images and view them on the computer screen.

It is now probably around 11:00 AM and the assistant assigned to ordering lunch convenes with the team to determine what we all want. Once the bickering ends and a decision is
made the order is placed.

I get called in to have a look at what has been done by the hair and make up artist and comments are made and some adjustments may occur at this time. Once all is well, the model
gets prepared for her first image and the stylist assists the model in
doing so.

The model steps in to the set and a marker is place where she will be standing, sitting or laying down. The hair stylist adjusts the hair for the initial position. The fashion
stylist is called to adjust the clothing to suit the position that the
model will take from the onset. Adjustments will be made as the model
changes positions. The make up artist waits for the first test shot to
see how the make-up looks under this particular type of lighting.
Adjustments are made to the make up if it does not render well under the
conditions. The look of the make up changes dramatically from the
dressing room make up lights to the lighting on the set.

Once all of the necessary adjustments are made, everyone leaves the set except the model and I fire off another image. I look at it again and make any adjustment needed to get
the effect I am looking for.

I now instruct the model to assume a role based on the storyboard of the theme of the shoot. I usually say, “… Do what you feel is appropriate and I will do my best to capture that
moment…” Once I feel I have captured the image I usually say “Got it!”
and the model leaves the set for her next change. We repeat the process
and usually after a couple of shots, we break for lunch, which lasts no
more than 45 minutes. I prefer not drinking any alcohol with my lunch,
as it makes me want to break for a Nap.. LOL.

I will generally be able to do between 6 and 8 images in a day, if there are not a lot of extreme hair or make-up changes. If there are, I am lucky to get 4 off. Of these 6-8
images we can see around 8-12 pages, as some are double page spreads.

Throughout the day, I will ask the assistants to change the backdrop color as well as the corresponding gelatin colors for my image. By around 19:00 to 20:00 the shoot is
wrapped. The stylist starts to pack the clothing, all of the accessories
that were of value have already been picked up by the messenger
services, the hair or wig is brought down and the make-up removed by the
make-up artist. My camera gear and computer gets put away. Everyone
says their good byes and ask to see the images once the post prod is
completed. The editor has already given me the dead line for the post
production, so we know what the turn around time is.

That is a short description of a day in the studio with a Fashion Photographer.

Continuing my discussion with Elisa DeCarlo where we talk about the activism movement and ways we can unify all of us toward the fight for size acceptance.

Cassy: What do you think we can do to bridge the gap between the races?

Elisa: That’s a hard one. I think there has to be active outreach on both parts, but especially on the part of whites, to get women past their shame and see what a phenomenal experience embracing themselves can be. That is a BIG job! Plus, there needs to be a change in the perception that this is a “black event.” For that you’d have to go to your PR people. There might be inclusion of plus-size “acceptable” white women, such as plus-size models like Kate Dillon, larger actresses, etc. There is an article in this week’s Entertainment Weekly (I think) about the rise in plus-size shows. White men have always had the freedom to be fat in our culture–think of all the sitcoms starring fat men and stunningly beautiful skinny women! WTF?

Cassy: When I started the Fuller Woman Network it was my way of trying to bridge the curvy community together as a whole, all people, all races, people who are thin and support the movement, etc. The Expo in the United States was to celebrate all of those entities at one time. Many felt that it was an “urban” event and shied away.

Elisa: Jesus. Urban is code word for Black?

Cassy: Yes it is, not so coded huh?

Elisa: Should we call whites “boonies”?

Cassy: LOL. We can if you like!

Elisa: I’m shocked to read that. Until we learn to come together, white, black, fat, thin, medium sized, it will be harder to effect change. That really makes me angry!

Cassy: It has to be a universal movement. What is your opinion regarding size activists and their role in the movement?

Elisa: One thought I have is that essentially, white size and fat activists tend to feel alone. Maybe they prefer to feel that way, because it makes them “special,” and “different,” and they can derive a sort of superiority about it. I could be way off-base. I work hard to reach out to my readers and in person, which is why I jumped at FFF Week™.

Cassy: Some activists seem very angry and exclusionary, it is hard to bring people to your point of view when you are so abrasive. I am a different type of activist. I feel that we have to understand the reasoning behind the discrimination and meet the challenge to change the perception.

Elisa: I agree with you totally. In some circles I’m considered “not fat enough” to speak to the issues concerned. AS IF!! I don’t know if it’s bringing them to your point of view as much as looking past the differences to the commonalities. Not saying that’s easy. If you’re stuck in the “it’s all the fault of our patriarchal society who want women to be helpless blah blah blah” it’s hard to move forward. It’s giving your power to the “other”. I’m wondering if that line of thinking is a white way of thinking–about how much men control society and perceptions of women. What we need to understand is that men AND women collaborate together to create the images that wreck our self-esteem.

Cassy: That is so true! As a black woman, I have always been comfortable in talking about the plus size movement and advocacy for size acceptance in any circle. White people are really enthusiastic in discussion but the follow through is the problem. I get the most follow through from the white corporate realm. This is always encouraging because corporate influence will effect real change.

Elisa: Yes! The more corporate backing you get the more legitimately you’re perceived. An article in the Business Section of the New York Times gives you legitimacy.

Cassy: Similar to race discrimination, if we feed into what some believe black people are: angry, uneducated, shifty, etc. then we are the stereotype. If we feed into the stereotype of people of size: lazy, poor, unlovable, angry-we will become the stereotype.

Elisa: Exactly. Those stereotypes are so embedded, like a cancer in our society. Fat white women are low-class, out of control binge eaters, unhappy, have bad jobs, etc.

Cassy: I am currently in a think tank with people from around the country who are trying to elevate the black community according to their particular expertise. I am working with our issues with defining our beauty. Self esteem is a major component of self- love and size acceptance. My theory is two fold- You have to believe that you are worthy of love and believe that your choices are valid because they are your own. These lessons are things that all women need to learn. Self esteem is a process that creates the path to self-love.

Elisa: Absolutely true. It does not come overnight, and it does not come easily. Both things that all women are told: 1) you are not worthy 2) your choices are wrong if they are not what you’re “expected” to do. That’s why I mentioned the undercurrent of shame at the Curvy Community panel. I mean, there’s a roomful of big gorgeous women–and they are STILL apologizing for being heavy, saying they want to lose weight, or that woman who announced during the panel she shed 100 pounds and was now a personal trainer. Way to make everybody pissed at you!

Cassy: You bring up an interesting point! Why is it not ok to rejoice in someone else’s choice to loose weight?  She was a still part of the “big girls club”! Perhaps it was how she said it?

Elisa: FFF Week™ was a “safe place”, where you didn’t have to feel bad that you DIDN’T lose 100 pounds. She could announce that anywhere and get a lot of praise, etc. I felt like she did it more to announce, “I’m a trainer and I can help you with your big fat body.” When I was selling plus-size vintage clothing, I had “tea party sales” where larger women come could, have tea and cookies and try on clothes in a relaxed atmosphere. Another clothing seller said I should also sell DIET PRODUCTS at these events! She was thin, of course. Didn’t get that it might be considered, uh, offensive, both to me and my customers.I recently got out of the business because of the economy.

Cassy: There are always going to be those who will try to capitalize on the plus trend. I am seeing it more than I would like right now.  Well love, I really enjoyed talking to you!! This is rarely talked about. Maybe we can champion the cause together!

Elisa: I would be more than delighted! Maybe next year there could be two or three white women in the Curvy Collective! I really admire what you’re doing, and your courage to explore this issue.

Cassy: Thank you for that. I always felt it takes one person, one thought to start a revolution. I don’t have much but what I do have is the desire to make a difference.

Elisa: It has been a real pleasure and very thought-provoking. I’ve never discussed these issues before. You really made me think! You have more than you know, my dear.

Since posting part 1, I (Cassy, from Daily Venus Divas) have been contacted by many women who feel that there is a need for unity in the plus community. We don’t have to be the same race to support one another. Being against injustice should be the common denominator that binds us. The rally cry against discrimination, whether it is against race or size, is a rally cry for the improvement of the current “human” condition. We all should be able to join the fight together.

Figure skater Johnny Weir let Bluefly video cameras into his closet so that the nation might ogle his vast clothing collection, which contains much more than controversial fur-accented unitards. Weir has a two-bedroom apartment in New Jersey, one bedroom of which he uses just for clothes — in addition to his two walk-in closets. “I live in New Jersey, and that affords me a lot more closet space than the average New Yorker gets,” Weir explained. “And believe me, I need it!” We spoke to him more about his Chanel jacket obsession, fur pillows, Louboutins as art pieces, and his upcoming clothing line.

What is your advice on closet cleaning?
I don’t get rid of anything — I’m such a pack rat. There could be something that I got ten years ago that I wouldn’t get rid of. I have a vintage Chanel jacket that I don’t actually fit into — a very classic Chanel tweed jacket. I just have it as a sort of art installment. And someday I’m going to have a kid, so whether it’s a boy or girl they’re going to inherit a really great wardrobe.

Do you wear women’s clothing?
I’m lucky because I’m really small so I can wear men's clothes and women’s clothes.

Do you wear women’s shoes, too?
Usually I try not to buy women’s shoes — I have no heels in my collection. I want to buy a pair of Louboutin patent-leather heels just to fit in the apartment as an art installation. I have a pair of Chanel women's boat shoes and a pair of women’s sneakers from Gucci. And I have a small foot.

How do you feel about man heels?
I don’t like the idea of that look — I think it’s not quite right. But there are those situations where you’re performing or doing a shoot where, you know, there’s nothing wrong with a little heel. I think more men should walk in heels and run in heels and see what women have to deal with every day.

How often do you shop?
It depends on the paychecks. It depends if I’m having a good month or a bad month, but if it’s a good month I’ll go and treat myself once or twice a week. I recently got a deal to write a book and I had to treat myself and I went and bought myself a Chanel jacket — a new one, a modern one from one of the recent collections.

What are your tips for closet organization?
I know exactly everything that I have. Whether it’s a tank top or fur coat, I’ll be able to pinpoint exactly where it goes in the house. I have special bins for things I don’t actually wear because I don’t actually need them. And I keep everything color coded, so I have a very strict system of closeting.

You encountered a spot of trouble earlier this year for wearing a bit of fur on one of your skating outfits. Do you own a lot of fur?
I do have a lot of fur. I’m a big fan of fur. I’m not a fan of nutria or fake fur and I’ve taken a lot of flack for that, but it’s just a choice that I make. I travel a lot to Russia and it’s usually in winter when I’m in Russia, so you can’t walk around in a plastic coat and plastic boots when it's minus 40 degrees. I’m from the country, I’ve gone hunting, so I know what happens. I know everything there is to know about the fur industry and I choose to wear fur.

How do you store your furs?
I have one closet that’s special and air conditioned just for fur, but it’s all fur coats and scarves and blankets and pillows and things like that.

You have real fur pillows?
I like to have a furry bed. I like to get cozy even in the summertime. The air conditioning gets cold and I like to snuggle.

How’s the clothing line coming along?
We’re meeting with several different producers and people that are willing to help and want to help and are very passionate about me sort of putting my name on some fashions. I’ve been so busy, and it seems like it’s been a long time since the Olympics, but it really hasn’t and I haven’t stopped doing appearances and performing. And I'm writing my single and trying to write my book. And I found a little bit of cellulite yesterday so I’ve been in the gym every day.

What kind of price point are you aiming for?
I want Chanel quality, of course — a different price point, but of course Chanel quality. If I’m going to put my name on it, it’s gotta be good enough for Uncle Karl. Price point? I’m thinking along the lines of All Saints or Topshop — I wouldn’t go crazy and put my name on a heel for $700. I’m not a tried-and-true designer just yet. Maybe when I’m 50 or 70 I can put my name on a shoe for $700.
