FashionIndie Straps on Its Glass Slippers to Go to the Ball

Last Friday, Nicole, Mac and Amanda helped me pick out a suitable black tie outfit to attend the New York Botanical Garden’s 12th Annual Winter Wonderland Ball. Considering the majority of my wardrobe consists of harem pants and the occasional billowy blouse, my closet was ill-equipped to meet the challenge. Thus we made an Indie field trip over to our local H&M and in a matter of minutes we had whipped up a say-something formal look — all for under $200, thank you. I was glad we had made the detour as, upon walking in, I was immediately confronted by a room full of gorgeous gowns and immaculate tuxedos. The Bronx, even in the alleged claws of Jennifer Lopez, had never seemed so glamorous.

Nina Garcia, Tinsley Mortimer, Derek Warburton, Charlotte Ronson, Chris Benz and CNN“s Alina Cho were among the well-appointed attendees, while liquor sponsor Domaine de Canton kept the ballers well lubricated with a host of refreshing cocktails. Bill Cunningham donned his best — and in all likeliness, only — tuxedo to capture the scene, including the 20th Annual Holiday Train Show. Calling it a”Train Show” is a bit of an understatement since the Garden’s Enid A. Haupt Conservatory was turned into a miniature train town, featuring the most stunning scaled-to-size architecture I’ve seen since Barbie‘s Dream Italian Villa.

Besides an excuse to dress up and be fabulous, the Wonderland Ball also supports the Garden’s world-renowned Children’s Education programs, allowing children of all ages, particularly underserved children in the Bronx, an opportunity to learn about nature in engaging ways through workshops and hands-on activities. While it may sound like a very serious and somber affair, the night was a blast, particularly after the DJ took to the turntables. There’s nothing quite like seeing a stately woman in a feathered gown shaking her tail-feather to LMFAO.

1 ounce of Domaine de Canton topped with Champagne. (served in a champagne flute and Garnished with a Wild Hibiscus flower)

“The Winter Gold Rush”

1.5 Ounces of Domaine de Canton

1 ounce of Makers 46

Half ounce of fresh lemon juice

(Shaken and strained into a martini glass and garnished with a luxardo cherry)

“The White Orchid”

Equal parts (1 ounce ) of Domaine de Canton, Belvedere Citrus Vodka, White Cranberry juice. ( Shaken and strained into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnished with a white orchid flower )

Yves Saint Laurent Was Not the Biggest Tom Ford Fan

“In 13 minutes on the runway you have destroyed 40 years of my career.” So reads a letter from Yves Saint Laurent to Tom Ford, according to Ford in an interview with CNN. The late designer seemed to grow resentful of Ford and the direction of his eponymous label as the brand grew more profitable.

Ironically, Ford talks about his fear of starting his own label — the fear of losing the rights to his name, the fear of his name being associated with a product he’s not proud of — before going into Yves Saint Laurent’s dissatisfaction with Ford and Gucci, who had purchased the YSL line:

“You know, he was supportive at the beginning….But when I started to get great press and the business started to become successful, Yves became really quite hostile and we had a little bit different taste. I have letters that he wrote to me about it, you know: ‘In 13 minutes on the runway you have destroyed 40 years of my career.’”

This isn’t the first time Ford’s spoken out over his strained relationship with Saint Laurent, though this time he stopped short of calling him “evil.” And it’s nice to know that at least he’s acknowledging his existence again — fashion grudges tend to last a lifetime. [Styleite]

First Look | Chelsea Clinton Wedding Gown & Photos

The world waited with baited breath for the nuptials of First Daughter Chelsea Clinton to her longtime beau Marc Mezvinsky tonight. Details of the wedding were kept under tighter security than that of the Afghan military intelligence reports. Up until this afternoon, no one knew which designer Chelsea would be wearing down the aisle, aside from the bridal party and the designer who made the dress. Most people guessed Vera Wang would be the designer of choice for Chelsea, especially since she was spotted earlier this week en route to a Vera Wang boutique in New York City.

The first photos from the wedding, which was held at Astor Courts, a 50-acre estate in Rhinebeck, New York, have been released on CNN, courtesy of the Associated Press and Getty Images. The blushing bride wore a strapless Vera Wang gown with a jewel encrusted waist that defined her middle and a ballgown skirt made out of raw edged laser-cut silk organza and a train in silk tulle. She opted for the traditional long tulle veil to compliment the diagonal draped bodice of her gown. She carried a bouquet of white hydrangeas. Proud mama Hilary Clinton, wore Oscar de la Renta. Every fashion lover on the planet waits anxiously for the airing of Morley Safer’s 60 Minutes piece on Anna Wintour. Due out sometime before May, the Wintour piece seems like a far-off dream, but rest assured, March has something big (and maybe even better!) in store! Starting March 18th CNN will air Revealed, a piece documenting French Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Carine Roitfeld on her epic journey through this season’s New York and Paris fashion weeks!
