As my sister discovered at her first (and forever) Coachella, the three things you need to happily survive are: Good shoes. Water. Fairy dust (…you know). Rageable, danceable, breathable shoes are key to outdoor concert comfort. Nothing can kill your buzz quite like thinking about your slipping, blistering feet (gross). These are all happy feet approved.

NO flip flops (there could be mud). Always break your shoes in first. If the shoes are slightly blister-inducing, bandage ahead of time. Be sure you can stand and dance all day and night in them. You should smile when you look down at them.

TOMS are some of the best festival shoes around. You feel good about the kids, and your feet just want to constantly be moving. Win. Win.

The good Doctor will carry you through any musical element. With air support underfoot, it'll having you moshing through even the grodiest of shows.

For the nudist in you, the slight platform also comes with a cushion, for the pushing.

At Coachella, being best dressed takes on a dazzling array of forms. Ranging from the wildly psychedelic to sheer desert chic, each raged forward, sharing their beauty, enhancing everyone’s good times. Check the 10 best I encountered on my Coachella trip from 4/20-4/23, right from the thick of it.

Almost like this is her real hair, and that her black hair of the same cut underneath, she of course is a stylist! She was sent to Coachella to style Méa for her Friday morning DJ set. We met on line for the Silent Disco. We let her cut the line with us. Well, we too had cut the line, so fair's fair.

It’s all about the fringe leather fanny and the Doc Martens with the floral bandeau and dainty chains. Found her leaving Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg super close to the stage.

Walking dazzled out of Florence and the Machine, gurl took off his heels and strutted his gold booty shorts on outta there.

With a glued on moustache, and the highly popular Native American headdress, he raged the Silent Disco. Yet those effects paled in comparison to the zebra stretch pants.

‘Neath the bustle of flowers hanging ‘round his neck is a self-printed Coachella shirt, complete with his friend’s names and his phone number. And the pants, the PANTS!

A neon cassette jacket at Radiohead caught my attention as I snapped the self-made, well vented, better painted work of wearable art.

Friday night onesie is topped with a red thin tapestry-esque robe.

The top hat drew me in, but I stayed for the waistline with an authentic fanny pack and a high line of buttons.

Feeling slightly Pocahontas on Day One, fringe and feathers feel right.

The green goggles took a moment’s break at the Silent Disco to try my Yay Life rainbow glasses. Yay outfit. Yay Life!

34 Sunday’s Best Coachella Streetstyle

The final day of Coachella brought the chic wildness that Indio brings. I swam through thick crowds at Florence and the Machine, and Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre (and 50 Cent and Eminem!) to get the deepest looks. It was motherf*cking P.I.M.P. See how the day turned from Lady of the Canyon to glowing night crawler. Come along this fashion trip.

64 Magnificent Coachella Streetstyle Looks

Still awake* from Day 2 of Weekend 2 of the Coachella Valley Music Festival. It was a magical day, a feast for the eyes and ears and senses. Today I rather tripped out on the most dazzling dancing bodies in the crowd, those who dressed themselves to be a spectacular spectacle. I documented my day through such people from midday (post Rolling Stone Pool party at my hotel) to sun up, now. Good night! Good day!

*Slept in the time it took to upload all of those. You’ll see by the last picture how high the sun was in the sky after the silent disco and Super Tall Paul. Meanwhile, might I give the most honorable mention to Thom Yorke, who carried me to a near state of enlightenment.

Palm Springs is vibing with weekend 2 of Coachella buzz. FashionIndie won big to be here and to experience it all with you! Now come along with me, let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, way back in August, Dr. Martens threw an event to launch their First and Forever campaign film with Agyness Deyn. Mr. And Mrs. Sartorialist and Garance Doré played host to a host of fashion bloggers ready to tell their own “first time doing anything” story to win a trip to Coachella.

My first fashion week/Oscar de la Renta show/gate crash with Victoria Beckham/appearance on the Sartorialist won me and my accomplice (my sister) AN ALL ACCESS TRIP TO COACHELLA!!

FashionInDIY: Festival-Ready Hanging Chain Headband

Need one last sweet accessory to light up your locks for weekend 2 of Coachella? Dangling chains in your hair could be just the kick you need. Hot indie blogger Love Maegan shows us how to make our own stretchy chained headband in a few crafty steps.

What you’ll need: Chains, pliers, and a totally 90s stretch claw headband.

STEP ONE: Measure it Out. Try on the headband, and see where it hits your temple. With fingers in place, take it off and count the number of notches between them. That’s how many chains you’ll need. Also measure from the bottom of the headband to the end of your hair. That’s how long the longest chain should be.

STEP TWO: Prep the Chains. With pliers, trim about the lengths of chains (3-4 different kinds) to varying heights by opening the links.

STEP THREE: Save the Closures. Keep the open links aside, and double that amount to use for reattachment.

STEP FOUR: Attach the Links. Loop the open links around the curved part of the headband, slip on the chain and close with the pliers.

STEP FIVE: Add to It. Want to make it totally unique? you don’t have to stop here. Get feathers or any charms you can get your hands on to deck the chains out.

Coachella Cool: Weekend 2 Pool Parties

While the first weekend of Coachella brought a chill, a bit of drizzle, and a ton of celeb sightings, weekend 2 promises staggering temps of 101 degrees, thus all the hot pool parties are sure to be bumpin’. So when I’m not seeing Radiohead, The Shins, The Black Keys, Azalea Banks, M83, Florence and the Machine, Feist, Calvin Harris (with perhaps Rihanna?), and the other acts I’m dying to see, you can find me kickin’ it at these off-site (mostly) swimmable ragers. KROQ House

Everybody, and I mean errbody is gonna be raging at the KROQ Coachella House. Last weekend they have every major act swing through for a set: Florence and the Machine, The Black Keys, The Shins, nearly everyone I listed above as my must-sees. Plus, I’ve got an appointment with the Doctor… Dr. Martens is kicking it poolside too.

Desert Gold: Roadside Attraction at the Ace Hotel

If you’re still out in the desert, wander to the Ace Hotel where they’re still partying strong, even now! Both weekends and all week are jam packed with artists like Jeremy Sole, The Do-Over, Secret Circuit, Darek Mazzone of KEXP, Peaking Lights, Awesome Tapes from Africa, DJ Rupture, Chief Boima, Luke Top of Fool’s Gold and so many more acts. It’s freaking packed with music and guaranteed wildness from local acts like Electric Flower Group, Dead Meadow, Akron/Family, The Entrance Band, Here We Go Magic and a whole raging roster. It’s a real festival with art installations, workshops and yummy foodtrucks. It’s your festival away from festival, and a place to go when you’re tweakin’ after hours, or at 10AM. Ahh Coachella. The weekend music festival where hipsters flock to rock out like celebrities and celebrities come to dress like hipsters and lounge around. The daytime scene is a series of posh pool parties (think bashes by Belvedere and Lacoste)and the nights are filled with mansion hopping & pop up parties (think Armani Exchange’s Neon Carnival). 10 Desert Dancing Essentials for Coachella

I’m en route to mount my first Virgin American, LAX-bound plane, to spend a week in sublime anticipation for the second, final EPIC weekend of Coachella. With my dancin’ Docs, sarongs and chiffon aplenty in my bag, I gaze out the window of my roommate’s car on the way to JFK, ruminating on the wardrobe I packed, and some pieces I may have to snag in LA this week. I’m one of many thousands of people headed to Indio, California today, armed to the gills with their most dazzling desert dancing gear. May you aquire glowsticks and foofaraw that toes your look over the edge into true festival territory.

Some of the only over layer necessary in the desert must be made of chiffon. Printed in an explosion of happy geometrics, it's festival-ready.

Neoprene will stand florally up against the elements, and form a good cushion against the desert ground. BYOBikini bottom.

Faux feather earrings printed bright will have you tribal dancing through the day.

A sarong at a festival is like a shirt in a restaurant. Damn-near required. One piece or two, bathing suits are the best way to layer for a festival. Under a skirt, sarong, or flowing chiffon, the suit will keep you ready for anything.

Sounds bizarre, but this dress is already packed away in my bag. I bought it strategically, 1. Because I think that tribal woman is actually me. And 2. Because this dress came pre-stained with rust-like splotches all over. This means worry-free romping around in the dirt and dust of Indio.

First Coachella Dream with Dr Martens and his Prescriptions

In a fantastical dream last night, I was skipping through hot fields packed with wildly garbed people and hula hoops. Ahead of me, The Black Keys were electrifying “Everlasting Light” on a massive stage, and behind me there was a great deal of foofaraw; including a giant glowing structure built of egg cartons and, oddly enough, each of my head scarves. I was floating, lighter than air, and every time I looked down at my feet, I was wearing a different pair of Dr. Martens. Metallic high tops! Purple polka dot creepers! Impressionist floral combat boots! And each time the Docs made a switch, The Sartorialist, Scott Schumann, snapped a picture of me. Meanwhile Garance Doré was across the field with 3 trailer trucks and a bevy of models, lighting, and incidentally, glow sticks, whilst she directed a photo shoot. When I turned back, The Black Keys had stopped, and the president of Dr. Martens takes the mic to welcome us all to Coachella 2012.

There can only be one explanation for such a dream….

The winter weather is finally turning and we’ve started to switch out our wardrobes to get set for summer. While filling out our closets, we’re checking off our list of summer staples: maxi dresses, vintage prints, short boots, ripped up tees, and worn in denim have all made the cut. Coachella Fashion Bashes: Belvedere, Lacoste & Armani Exchange Rocked Our Socks

Coachella Music Festival can be summed up in two words: sensory overload. Music and fashion lovers gathered in numbers around 250,000 in the piping hot desert of Palm Springs for a three day, six stage, 200+ band concert series. In addition to every trendsetter and eccentric in the country, the performances drew in the best of the fashion industry and young Hollywood. FashionIndie & Lookbooks was there to witness it all, and we certainly have a lot to report on. Here’s our recap of the best fashion events of the weekend.

Armani Exchange Neon Carnival: Armani Exchange and 944 Magazine took over a private airport on the outskirts of the festival and built a fully-functioning, Armani Exchange-branded carnival. In addition to the ferris wheel, giant slide and carnival games, they managed to build an outdoor club in the middle of the venue, complete with celebrities and bottle service. Belvedere Music Lounge: The Belve Music Lounge provided a peaceful oasis from the hot desert sun. Located at a private estate in Bermuda Dunes, the lounge had a refreshing pool, mini sand pit, cold cocktails, a fun photo booth and models in bikinis demonstrating the Belvedere shaker app on iPads. DJ sets were as sought-after as the festival lineup: The Knux, Taryn Manning, Dirty Vegas, Yacht, Punches, Blaqstarr, DJ Berrie, Junior Sanchez, Theophilus London and more spun for our pleasure. Our celeb spottings included Rosario Dawson, Brittany Snow, Laidback Luke and Miguel.

Lacoste: Lacoste L!ve, the younger, more fashionable crocodile, hosted a Pool Party that supported the efforts of The Voice Project foundation. Patron popsicles cooled us off while DJ Cassidy kept us dancing. Celeb spottings included Katy Perry, Alexander Skarsgard, Malin Akerman, Kirsten Dunst, Diane Kruger, Joshua Jackson, Adrian Grenier, Ke$ha, Lea Michele, Kelly and Jack Osbourne and Jared Eng.

A weekend of Californian madness is about to begin – dancing in the outdoors all the days long – at Coachella. If you’re lucky enough to be going, bring pieces like these to ensure a euphoric trip. When dressing for a festival, the goal is to look as visually stimulating as possible, the audience is just about as much of a show as the bands themselves. And the busier the patterns the more wild you’ll be, and the less likely it will look as dirty as it gets.

Guys Guide To Coachella: Day One

Coachella is only a few days away and it’s important for us guys to get our wardrobe right before we get there. Here’s a template for what your outfit should be on Friday. We’ve broken down your style to be dictated by both the weather and artist lineup.

Weather: High of 94°

Key Artists: Kings of Leon, Interpol, Robyn, Lauryn Hill, Cee Lo Green, Cold War Kids, & Brandon Flowers

Based on the info above one can see 2 obvious things: 1. it is going to be hot and 2. it’s going to be a mixed bag of artists. Because of this it is best to try to stay as cool as possible and genre neutral. Since it’s also the first day of the festival it’s best to play it cool and casual. Nothing says loser like trying to hard on a first day.

Casual can described at it’s best by wearing a tee shirt. In this case a graphic one with a V-Neck is preferable. This Quiksilver tee is an amazing shade of grey and depicts the ease and breeze that is California.

It will be suicide to wear pants that whole weekend. That being said a laid back pair of shorts will do for this outfit. I picked out these Vince Seaside Stripe Trouser Shorts because they are summer weather ready and the stripes are a great and subtle outfit accent.

When it comes down to accessories go for color. Sperry is always a warm weather footwear staple so these Striper Laceless in a bright blue will do the trick. You need a timepiece to make sure you don’t miss your favorite act so this Micheal Kors watch kill keep you organized and stylish. To finish off your look throw on a pair of colored sunglasses. Since everyone and their mother will be doing a wayfarer look why not try a colored aviator such as this one from Ray-Ban.

Go for an SPF laden tinted moisturizer, cheek and lip stain for some color, and water proof eyeliner for those who can’t live without (like moi). Keep the lipgloss and sunblock on hand and you’re good to go!

Fur Hammocks, Coachella and Vodka at Alexander Wang

Last night, Sam Lim (follow her on twitter @iamsamlim) and I cabbed it down to Alexander Wang‘s SoHo flagship store on Grand Street for a private shopping event through American Express. Between drooling over the highly covetable collection and swinging in the giant fur hammock at the center of the store, we — well, I — got drunk on cocktails by Belvedere Vodka and Sam caught up with the designer for a quick chat.

What are you most excited about for this season?

Vacation. I’m going to Coachella, I’m excited to see everyone, especially all the DJs and Kanye.

What Alex Wang style does the Coachella girl wear?

I leave it up to them, they are much more inspiring than I could ever be.

I have a personal attachment to a lot of the leather jackets.

And what would a shopping event be without a little shopping? We were trapped, however, in a fashion dilemma — what to buy, what to buy? Well, Sam was trapped in a fashion dilemma as I had already spent my clothing budget on a bag of magic beans earlier in the week.

Sam fell in love with a shoulder bag then fell in love again seconds later (fickle heart that lady has) with a backpack in a similar style. A day later she’s still deliberating over which one to get, though hopefully she’ll make her decision soon since 10% of all profits go to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Personally, I favor the backpack, but Sam can always use a third, fourth and possibly fifth opinion. Thoughts, dear readers?

LAST WEEKEND’S FESTIVAL: Kirby Conquers Lollapalooza 2009

Imagine the sweatiest event of your life. Perhaps it was during that marathon you ran in Phoenix, Arizona or possibly that 100 degree scorcher when your air-conditioning cut out…whatever the case may be, try to relive that sweat. Now, take that sweat, times it by 3 days, 80,000 music freaks, less than 3 inches between you and the drunkard next to you and you’ve got yourself a typical Lollapalooza music festival. Throw in some humidity, 6 hours worth of rain, thousands of 24 oz Bud Lights, some horse manure scented mud and you’ve got Lollapalooza 2009 down to a science. Welcome, my friends, to the most brilliant weekend of my life (and that’s no exaggeration.)

I had envisioned this post looking something like Hedi Slimane’s photo-journal after he attended Coachella back in April; something containing photos of well dressed and flawlessly styled potential models. This next statement may be a generalization and offensive to some, but through my Fashion Indie opinionated eyes, EVERYONE LOOKED LIKE SHIT. Love handles stuck out of trashy booty shorts. Cargo shorts and graphic tees comprised the male population. Ray Ban shades were in a nauseating full effect. Trust me when I say that there was not a single person worth wasting a megapixel of my Nikon D50. But in everyone’s defense, it did rain quite a bit, mud caked Grant Park and it was pushing 100 degrees on a daily basis. So, if your excuse for slacking on style was in preservation of you Alexander Wang swag, you’ve been forgiven. As for the rest of you, I’m severely disappointed.

But all fashion zeros aside, Lollapalooza 2009 will go down in Kirby history as an all-time fantastic weekend. My friend Amber and I met up with some of my NYU buds, as well as some of last year’s festival friends and some new ones, and enjoyed the sounds and sights of some of the world’s most talented music artists. Although I saw over 50 shows in total, there are the significant few that really stuck out in my mind:

Animal Collective, despite my having almost died of suffocation from moshing, was an absolutely amazing show. I mean, come on, who doesn’t want to hear a 15 minute version of “Brother Sport” while watching the sun set over Lake Michigan? Crystal Castles, needless to say, was a shit-show…but in the best way possible! Lead singer Alice Glass was a classy lady chugging from her bottle of Bacardi Superior between songs, taking drags from her cigarette throughout and hawking spit in the crowd. Although I only caught a few of Passion Pit’s songs, they certainly didn’t fail to stir those butterflies I get every time I hear “Sleepyhead.” Andrew Bird relaxed the crowd with his melodic violin licks and whistles and was a perfect example of pure talent. Vampire Weekend, as always, put on a high energy set and left the crowd practically drooling over some of the new songs they whipped out. MSTRKRFT reigned as my favorite of the Lollapalooza 2009 DJ sets, completely blowing what Bassnectar, DeadMau5 and The Bloody Beetroots had to offer out of the water. Despite my former biases for Kings of Leon and The Killers, both groups (with the help of a few energetic friends and a bit of booze) rocked the house…nothing beats soaking in 80,000 bobbing heads and waving hands as I sat atop some 6’5″ stud’s shoulders (thanks Evan!) rocking out of The Killers’ “Human.”

But if one band really sealed the deal on this year’s Lollapalooza experience, the award goes to none other than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. As one of the Saturday night headliners, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had some very big shoes to fill after they replaced The Beastie Boys’ slot (due to Adam Yauch’s cancer surgery). Many Lolla-goers had their doubts about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs headlining performance, saying that they weren’t yet popular or experienced enough to deserve a coveted main-stage concert. Well, let’s just say those nay-sayers are biting their tongues because the Yeah Yeah Yeahs stole Lollapalooza 2009. There’s not much else to say except for the fact that their performance was outstanding, complete with high energy, humble recognition of such an amazing opportunity and a fantastic sound. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, lead singer Karen O is a rockstar.

So, are you itching for next August yet so you can plan your trip to Chicago and experience the greatness that is Lollapalooza? I know I am.

Hedi Slimane Finds Model Status Beatniks At Coachella

If the concert lineup and gorgeous California weather wasn’t enough to make me regret my absence from this year’s Coachella music festival, the photos above certainly add to my contrite mood. Leave it up to Hedi Slimane, my personal favorite fashion photographer, to document the weekend’s most beautiful people. Granted, many of these model status bohemians are probably under the age of 16, but there is no denying that a modeling career isn’t terribly farfetched. I’m seeing a few Ash Stymest and Luke Worrall look-a-likes out there! And that bony boy in the White-Sox hat, I bet IMG is on the phone negotiating a contract as we speak.

Too Cute At Coachella

Coachella [noun] Co-chell-a: A three-day concert event in Indio, California where one will undoubtedly sweat profusely, pass out in the grass from heat exhaustion, have beer spilled upon oneself, be pushed and shoved by thousands or other spectators and most likely bleed from crowd surfers and/or broken beer bottles. That being said, who on earth would wear the best of the best designer gear to such an event? As a huge concert-goer (pretty psyched about the Lollapalooza 2009 lineup!) I often wonder what I’m going to wear…or not wear. However, a Roberto Cavalli romper and a Raquel Allegra top were definitely not on my list of things to sport at a show. After Lollapalooza 2008, I came home with ruined gladiators, a broken pair of sunglasses, grass stains on my cut offs and unidentified splotches on my sundress. So, tell me, why one earth would you wear some $800 silk chiffon garb to Coachella? By all means, look cute…but save the designer stuff for a classy, sit-down event.
