INTERVIEW: William Okpo Sisters on Inspiration, Family & Guilty Pleasures

William Okpo is the brainchild of sisters Lizzy and Darlene Okpo for the contemporary, confident woman. Named as an ode to their father whose killer style has always been an inspiration to them, the Okpo sisters have garnered a lot of attention in the past year. The brand is sold at Opening Ceremony in NY and LA; they have become street style stars for their amazing wardrobe, accessories and long locks; and they recently teamed with Brook&Lyn to create a cape and pouch. We caught up with the Brooklyn-based design duo to find out what it’s like working with a family member, their current muse and guilty pleasures.

What inspired you to become designers?

Like most young people who couldn’t afford the latest and the greatest, we found a way to make our own out of whatever was available to us. From there, we felt a constant need to create what we didn’t see readily available.

What is it like working with your sister?

It’s a blessing. Everyone should work with their sister. It’s definitely a new relationship you have to adapt to, of course. We get to know a different side of each other, the business side. The best thing about it is we act as a strong force because we clearly understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, there are never any hard feelings.

Who is your muse at the moment?

All the young people putting their right foot forward and following their hearts. We need more leaders and innovators in this world. We’ve been noticing more and more young people taking advantage of this creative movement happening.

Hello Kitty x Forever 21 is Just Too Cute

Missoni x Target Lookbook is Here. Yeah, It’s Okay to be Obsessed.

In 28 days (that’s less than a month people), the Missoni for Target collection is hitting stores. We’ve been dying to see photos of the line, and salvation has finally come with these sneak-peaks of the lookbook. There will be more than 400 pieces in the collection for men, women, children and home and even a Missoni x Target bicycle; I will go on the record and say, if I had this bike, I would consider riding a bike. UNIQLO Roller Skates to the High Line

Our favorite Japanese retailer UNIQLO wants you to come roller skate with them under the High Line. That’s right, from July 28 – September 26, you can lace-up and spin round on the High Line Rink, NYC’s only open air skating rink presented by UNIQLO. But what makes this collaboration even cooler is the pop-up shop UNIQLO Cube where you can shop for your favorite essentials on the west side.

The High Line Rink, located at West 30th and 10th Avenue, will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday – Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday – Saturday. The $12 admission fee includes skate rental for those not rolling up with their own pair. Various food trucks and booze from The Lot on Tap will be around for your enjoyment. Just when we thought UNIQLO couldn’t get any cooler…

Christian Lacroix Adds a Little French Flair to Desigual

Blue Margaritas & Awesome Kicks at Diesel

Last night, Diesel held an exclusive launch event for their Spring 2011 sneaker collaboration with Adidas at their Lexington Flagship store in NYC. We got a first look at five classic Adidas styles redesigned by Diesel for a limited edition capsule collection. While browsing all of the fab merchandise, we sipped on blue margaritas and Radeberger Pilsner and had our ears blasted with tunes by DJ Blaqstar.

These were my favorites sneakers. I love the different studs.

Get Some Wearable Art–Jenny Holzer for Keds Line Available Starting Today

Keds has definitely been making the rounds, if you know what I mean. As in Keds is a lot like a doorknob, everyone gets a turn. After bedding the Gap, Keds launches another collaboration, this time with artist Jenny Holzer.

The folks at Keds must be pretty busy lately. After launching an awesome fall line for Gap, they’ve gone and collaborated with artist Jenny Holzer on these super cool Champion Sneakers ($90) now available on Bloomingdales.com. Proceeds from the shoe go straight to the Whitney Museum of American Art, as we told you last month – so you get an affordable piece of art, and the money goes back where it belongs. That’ll put a skip in your step.

Jean Paul Gaultier for Target

In March 2010, Jean Paul Gaultier will follow in the footsteps of Alexander McQueen and Anna Sui to design an affordable collection for Target. Gaultier’s inspiration behind the line, which will be available March 7th until April 11th, is “The American Woman.” Knowing the avant-garde nature of Gaultier’s designs, the collection will be more eccentric and conceptual than traditional American sportswear.

Unlike the other Target/ designer collaborations of times past, Gaultier’s collection with be much more limited in supply, only being sold in 250 stores across the country instead of the 600 that featured Sui’s line. Mark your calendars now!

Ruffian for Macy’s Lackluster Preview

Photos from the new Ruffian capsule collection for Macy’s have hit the web. It went something like this; striped polo, plaid shirt, striped shirt, basic jeans. Kind of like what you’d find at The Gap on any given Sunday. We’re not impressed.

I’ve been a pretty big fan of Ruffian’s womens collection for sometime, which is why I was ecstatic when I heard designers, Brian Wolk and Claude Morais were working on a low cost Mens capsule collection for Macy’s. Of course the excitement is now just bitter disappointment as I scan photos of a mess of basics I haven’t been interested in since high school.

Hopefully there will be some high points to this collection added before it hits the selling floor, but if not, I think we’ve just been bamboozled into paying attention to line that really doesn’t offer anything fresh in the menswear category.

Le sigh, Ruffian boys, le sigh.
