You are inspired by Reginald Marsh’s paintings, who depicted a lot of New York City scenes throughout the 1920s and 30s. What about this time period, and the women who lived it, speaks to you?
I love the way Reginald Marsh captures and celebrates the strength, beauty and imperfections of women in the most feminine way. What I like about this time period is the way women dressed to be seen and admired.

You drape many of your pieces to achieve romantic, body-conscious design. What do you want women to feel when when they wear this silhouette? Who is the Amber Sakai woman?
Confidence! The Amber Sakai woman is someone who walks to her own beat. She is both sophisticated and flirtatious and not afraid to live out her every single desire.

Every piece in your collection can seamlessly take the wearer from a flea market to a gritty after-hours club. This seductive woman is so overtly New York. What about this great city and the women who inhabit it inspire your design?
My design aesthetic suits a women who is constantly on the go, as most New York women are! I love how New Yorkers fully embrace day to evening ensembles, and I find many of my silhouettes will allow her the freedom to be fashionably ready from walking out the door in the morning to any impromptu after-hours events the city has to offer.

I visited family, helped my mom move, put together some flat pack furniture, changed the oil on my car, cleaned my house, deep cleaned my carpets, bathed my cat, taught my son how to shave, went on some long bike rides and went shopping. Like Katherine Heigl’s character in the movie 27 Dresses, many women’s closets are stuffed with bridesmaid dresses that are unsuitable for any other occasion.  Fashion Design students at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) have taken on the challenge of transforming bridesmaid dresses into the perfect outfit for a Friday night date, dinner, concert, or other festive occasion.

The challenge is part of a competition sponsored by Bridal Guide magazine and Alfred Angelo, a bridalwear manufacturer.  Open to all full-time FIT students majoring in Fashion Design, Bridal Guide provided each student with photos of three bridesmaid dresses. Participants submitted three sketches and fabric samples of the redesigned dresses.  Then, each finalist received an actual bridesmaid dress to redesign according to her sketch.

Three finalists, all women, are Heamin Choi, Xiaonan Gao, and Juda Selkowitz. Their final designs are shown above. The finalist with the most votes will win $1,500 in cash, with the winner announced on or about June 18.
