#NYFW Cheat Sheet: Costello Tagliapietra

On the second floor of MILK Studios (the oft preferred alternative to Lincoln Center), newlyweds Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapetra showed their Fall 2012 collection in a rush of coral reef-like prints and soothing colored draping. Having been together 17 years, their marriage didn’t change anything too drastically. In fact, the were in love before they went into business. In such happiness, they also give back to Mama Earth by using AirDye  to color their fabrics; they don’t use water, which typically harbors toxins and releases them into water sources. Wich such positivity in their world, Jeffery’s watercolor paintings of chrysanthemums blossomed into a Costello Tagliapietra collection that delights.

Amongst the bevy of busy prints that has shaped this fashion week, we’ve noticed how equally represented Roy G. Biv has been. These shades, however, are unique to now, with a sense of vibrancy. There’s a definite consensus around the FashionIndie office regarding this season at the tents: lackluster. Gone was the excitement and the thrill of the new and in its stead stood a circus comprised of the old guard impatiently appraising the crop of would-be streetstyle stars and the army of bloggers hanging about as they waded through the muck of the nameless and the irrelevant to find a collection onto which to pin their ever-dwindling hopes . Still, there were a few shows that set the five barely-beating hearts of FashionIndie racing and had our backs aching to be clothed in their bright and bold designs.

Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra wanted to turn back time. In their show notes, the design duo remarked that they were in a New York — 17 years ago — state of mind. The result was a bright, flouncy collection that evoked the spirit of the 90s while remaining classically feminine.
