The lithe and leggy Karlie Kloss gets in touch with her inner glamourpuss for Oscar de la Renta‘s spring 2012 ad campaign.

Styled by Alex White and shot by Craig McDean, Kloss is characteristically stunning — although I feel it my duty to address her shoulder in that powder blue feather dress. It’s strangely Gumby-esque, no? Like White glued on a fake arm at the last minute when Kloss’ real arm got stuck in akimbo. Bad Photoshop or just awkward artistic statement? Either way, the real star of these ads is Karlie’s giant chignon — hello perfect day-to-night ‘do.

Anna Wintour has been credited/blamed/lauded/criticized for the current proliferation of celebrity-driven magazine covers of the past 15 years or so. Love it or hate it, a model has a better chance winning a Pulitzer than landing a U.S. Vogue cover — with a few notable exceptions. While stars are rightfully and contractually beautiful, however, not all of them can cut the couture mustard. Then there are those ladies who love the camera and the camera is kind of obsessed with them. Here, the 10 actresses who give the best editorial — and give models a run for their money — are given the countdown treatment.

Helena Bonham Carter for Marc Jacobs, Kate Winslet for St. John

Two actresses, two very different campaigns. Eternal pixie and best-dressed candidate Helena Bonham Carter stars in Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 campaign, shot, per usual, by Juergen Teller. Meanwhile, Oscar winner and non-model Kate Winslet‘s Craig McDean-lensed ads for St. John have finally made an appearance.

Both Winslet and Bonham Carter are known for their red carpet style; whereas Kate skews more to the classic ideal of Hollywood glamour, Helena likes to pile on the crazy. And while St. John is trying to appeal to a younger customer, Marc continues to give less than two shits what anyone thinks.

Hence, Kate Winslet for St. John — classy, demure, grey jersey dress, acting — and Helena Bonham Carter for Marc Jacobs — legs splayed at an awkward angle, pink sequins and scallops, quirk. Matches made in fashion heaven.

Now if only the two actresses could switch places in their respective ads à la Freak Friday. That would be truly heavnly. [WWD, Daily Telegraph, Fashionologie]

St. John Wants You to Know Kate Winslet Is Not a Model

St. John treated Oscar-winning leading lady Kate Winslet to a glamorous photoshoot with Craig McDean…at an old movie theater in Jersey City. Purportedly to play up the fact that she is a “real woman.”

Winslet explains:

“They want to keep it looking like me and not have it look like me pretending to be a model wearing these clothes. I’m obviously not a model. I’m not the size of a model. I don’t have the face of a model or the shape of a model.”

This is the film queen’s first stint as the face of a fashion house having shilled for American Express and Lancôme in the past. However when the reporter told Kate that the St. John woman was known more for hot flashes than hot pants, she seemed “surprised”:

“To me, it’s fresher than that. It seems fresher than that because of the fabrics. They’re extremely delicate, extremely wearable and very flattering.”

Then she backhanded the reporter and stormed off the set only to realize it was Jersey at which point she began to hysterically cry. Little did she know someone was filming her with their camera phone and her performance is already being considered a huge Oscar frontrunner.[WWD]

January Brings a Cold Front to W

Former model and aspiring actress January Jones has not one but two covers for W‘s special “Design Now” May issue, photographed by Craig McDean and styled by Lori Goldstein. I’ve always been on the fence with Jones and though I still consider her the worst part of Mad Men, her two striking covers and her red carpet style are beginning to win me over. What can I say? — I’m a sucker for an austere haircut and a pair of gams til next Tuesday.

Lynn Hirschberg interviews Jones and discusses the similarities between Mad Men‘s Betty Draper and X-Men: First Class‘s Emma Frost, namely that they’re both ice-cold bitches.

Draper, it turns out, was not even in the original Mad Men pilot, but series creator Matthew Weiner wrote the part for Jones — who had auditioned for the role of scrappy plain Jane gal Friday, Peggy Olson — thus ensuring four seasons of great clothes and questionable acting.

- The full schedule for the Royal Wedding on April 29th has been released and because of that bothersome 5-hour time difference, I hope you’re a morning person. Commoners arrive at 8 am (3 EST), VIPs at 10, the Royals at 10:40 (tradition dictates they arrive fashionably late and preferably fashionably drunk), Kate Middelton and her 5 bridesmaids arrive at 11 then the whole thing’s over by 12:15 for a wedding reception hosted by Queen Liz II. And of course I’ll be wearing this the entire time. [Huff Po]

- I always forget that Abercrombie & Fitch is not a purveyor of fine Aryan, homoerotic soft-core porn but an actual clothing retailer. A&F is riding the firm, bare buttocks of its ubiquitous models to an estimated profit of $7.5 billion. Never underestimate the power of tacky clothes and naked models. Of course, I never have. [WWD]

Between the Spreads: Amber Valletta Is a Woman on the Verge of a Vogue Breakdown

Amber Valletta graces two Vogue editorials this month, one for Anna‘s American edition and another for Franca‘s Italian. For both, Amber plays what seems a woman barely able to cope with all this damn beauty — something with which I can certainly sympathize.

The main difference between the spreads is the presence of Amber’s son, Auden, thus confirming the American belief that children ruin your life and leave you a husk of a human being. The Italians, the story tells me, romp around their empty home with bigger hair and more dramatic eye make-up, struggling with their addiction to wine and moody cinema.

Steven Klein brings Amber’s desperation to light for U.S. Vogue with the help of stylist Camilla Nickerson, while her ten-year-old son proves the fierce fruit does not fall far from the supermodel tree. Across the pond, Craig McDean lenses Amber solo, benefiting from Edward Enninful‘s routinely amazing styling.

The two spreads are different and strong enough to stand on their own, but with Gisele and Britt Maren appearing in the same dress on the covers of Vogue Paris and Germany, respectively, I can’t help but wonder…

Are there too many Vogues?

I mean, in honesty, I can do with only the following five: Vogue Italia (the best), Vogue Paris (giving Alt a chance), Vogue Nippon (amazing editorials), U.S. Vogue (the glue that holds the family together) and Vogue Russia (because of this).

The others can shutter for all I care. And yes, I am referring to British Vogue — I don’t really care for it, despite Kate Winslet‘s recent stunner of a cover.

Mila Kunis Saves W

I haven’t cared for the past few covers of W. They all looked the same and were kind of boring: a slate grey background, someone scowling at the camera, me rolling my eyes in the line at the supermarket. But if there’s anything I’ve learned in the past few months it’s that Mila Kunis makes everything better.

Gone is the grey, replaced by a glowing white as Mila vamps for Craig McDean in glorious Black Swan-like plumage, courtesy of stylist Alex White.

This cover is not drastically different from previous covers, but it’s more “fashion.” I’m actually interested in picking up this issue and paging through the editorial, which is gorgeous by the bye.

I’m just going to elect Mila Kunis to be the next big movie star and hopefully everyone will stop trying to make Megan Fox happen.

Alexander Wang’s “Image Piece” Non-Ad Runway Flashback

Alexander Wang is launching an “image piece” in the March issue of Interview Magazine and on a Billboard in Noho, according to WWD. It sounds suspiciously like an advertisement, but he has renounced that word, because an ad campaign would mean bending to industry standards. And Aymeline Valade as a Wang-bearing Samurai is anything but standard.

Craig McDean photographed the techno aluminum poncho, windswept around this warrior, and we’ll get to see more in the film of the shoot when it releases on March 1st. Layered as the Alexander Wang girl should be, it was styled by Karl Templer. But how hard of a task was that? Isn’t this the exact look we saw on the runway a few months ago…

And with so many layering pieces to choose from?! Frank Baron, couldn’t you have Creatively Directed Mr. Templer to the rest of the collection? Not that this look isn’t fly, but give me a wardrobe of Alex’s Spring look book and I’ll never wear the same outfit twice! Not that I ever would anyway.

STAM! She’s baaaaack…

Why does it feel like a century since we’ve seen Jessica Stam grace the pages of Vogue Italia? I mean, it has been a couple of years…but never fear! The Stam is back, and she’s smack dab on the cover of Beauty in Vogue.

And thank heavens for it, because we’re LOVING her psychedelic-future-punk makeup in this Craig McDean spread.

The frizz-mohawk hairdo is to die for.

High school junior Lindsey Wixson looks extravagantly Versace in the ads for the brand’s newest fragrance Vanitas.

The fragrance is targeted to older Versace customers, so some may think Wixson is too young for the job. I think she looks fabulous and perfect in every way. Photographer Craig McDean shot the ads, set to launch in the United States late 2012.

A smash of style indeed! Craig McDean’s most recent spread for Vogue Italia is certainly turning mixed and matched styles around, making them more glamorized than their typical fashion faux pas status. Models Magdalena Frackowiak, Eniko Mihalik, Jourdan Dunn, Evelina Mambetova, and Suzie Bird totally rock out the conglomerate of studded boots, ballerina skirts, layered chains, bows, lace gloves, corsets, fur pelts and sun hats, as well as their furled hair and caked on makeup. Loving the creepy stares and natural, somewhat masculine body language too. All in all, the styling is impeccable and Vogue Italia is finally starting to break the safe, conservative mold.

This spread is extremely creepy, but just as awesome. The models’ makeup and crazy contact lenses made for quite the demonic essence during the shoot. Titled “Magnificent Excess,” photographer Craig McDean did an excellent job of capturing a wardrobe of over-the-top accessories while keeping the feel that Karlie Kloss and Sigrid Agren are possessing a greatly dark secret. Is it just me, or has Vogue Italia been pulling out all the stops so far this year?

AnOther Fashion Book, a collectible coffee table tome from the AnOther Magazine people, will soon be available at Colette.

The $85 book is a retrospective of the exclusive editorials from eight years of the biannual. Featured photographers include Craig McDean, Nick Knight, Mario Sorrenti, Sam Taylor-Wood, Horst Diekgerdes, Stephen Shore, David Sims, Terry Richardson, Willy Vanderperre and Glen Luchford.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Edition 7L will publish, and Steidl will print it.
