The Olsens Top 2012 CFDA Nominees

Is it really that time again for the biggest prize in American fashion? Yup! The nominees and honorees have been announced for the 2012 CFDA Awards and it’s a full house. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have graduated from the Swarovski Emerging Talent pool to be nominated for womenswear designer of the year for The Row along with last year’s winners Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCullough of Proenza Schouler and perennial favorite Marc Jacobs. This year, marking the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s 50th anniversary, the awards will be presented on June 4 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tulley Hall in a ceremony hosted by Saturday Night Live also-ran Seth Meyers.

Joseph Altuzarra Wins CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award

Pocket hottie Joseph Altuzarra of eponymous line Altuzarra beat out nine other designers to be named the grand prize winner of this year’s Council of Fashion Designers/Vogue Fashion Fund at Skyhigh Soho last night.

The Fashion Fund, created by the CFDA and Vogue to aid young and emerging designers, includes a mentorship program and a cash prize. Altuzarra took home $300,000 while runners-up Pamela Love of Pamela Love Jewelry and Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind walked away with $100,000 each.

Those that went home empty-handed were Suno’s Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis; Carlos Campos; Antonio Azzuolo of A.A. Antonio Azzuolo; Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs of Cushnie et Ochs; Ohne Titel’s Alexa Adams and Flora Gill; Fenton/Fallon’s Dana Lorenz, and Soraya Silchenstedt of Finn Jewelry.

This year’s selection committee included Vogue’s editrix-in-chic Anna Wintour, CFDA prez Diane von Furstenberg and CEO Steven Kolb, Theory‘s Andrew Rosen, Coach‘s Reed Krakoff, J. Crew‘s Jenna Lyons, and past Fund winners — Proenza Schouler‘s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. [WWD]

6 Street Style Blogs from Cities Dissed by GQ

GQ made a lofty list of cities that bite the big one in the fashion realm. They hit the nail on the head with some cities, like with the Burlington, VT “Cool hat, stoner” comment, and Boston’s place at #1. But other cities had me questioning. Brooklyn? Manhattan? Kansas City??? Seriously, I’m not sure how NYC made the list, but much of it felt like Gentleman’s Quarterly simply pointing out the pratfalls of fashion in America. We’ve plucked out some locales that are trying, and have documented their fashion (mis?)adventures in street style blogs to prove it. And so, we bring them to you, 6 cities on the brink of redemption from GQ‘s scathing report. You decide if they deserved the beating.

Under The Guise chronicles the style in the country music capitol of the world. Essentially calling the city a collectively fan of the bolo tie and cowboy boots, GQ might not be horribly wrong, but these creepers seem sartorially on.

Anna Wintour and her flock of the fabulous have meticulously the selected 10 designers (and design duos) in the running for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award. Last year, Billy Reid took the top prize of $300,000, a year of mentorship and a bronze trophy. The two runners-up Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo each took home $100,000 and a year of mentoring. This year, the judges are Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler (who join the committee for the first time this year), Mark Holgate of Vogue, Jeffrey Kalinsky of Jeffrey and Nordstrom, Steven Kolb of the CFDA, Reed Krakoff of Coach, Jenna Lyons of J.Crew, Andrew Rosen of Theory, Diane von Furstenberg of the CFDA, and of course the Queen herself, Anna Wintour of Vogue.
