Fashion Forward celebrates “the fashion industry’s longstanding commitment to fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic” as well as remembers “the talented and gifted individuals of the fashion community,” and brings together New York City “for one of the premier fashion events of the fall season.” This year, a bevy of professional beauties including Crystal Renn, Jenny Shimizu, Andrej Pejic, Travis Cannata and Givenchy muse Lea T. donated their time and their turning to star in a promo video for the GMHC‘s annual fundraiser, directed by Jonathan Turner and Jason Farrer and cast by Andrew Weir for ACW Casting. While she is no longer the editrice of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld is still turning it out, now on her own terms. In her latest project, she styled the Barneys lookbook, gathering a collection of werqing women that move her, and dressed them in that way that made French Vogue so epic. Here, we’ve taken five of our favorite looks and (though we’d love to go to Barneys for them, a. these pieces are not available online, and b. pshh we wish) found their essences for less.

RED CARPET REPORT CARD: The Best, Worst & Most Boring at the Met Gala

Last night was the holy grail of red carpet fashion. The 2011 Met Ball honoring late and legendary designer Alexander McQueen brought out the best in, well, almost everyone. In this edition of Red Carpet Report Card, we’ll take a peek at the star-studded event and decide who was working, who was sleeping and who should have been turned away upon arrival.

*Andre Leon Talley wins the award for best purple tent. As always, his volumes are amazing.

Let’s take a look at the Best Dressed of the night. This category has quite a bit of people, as it should, for fashion’s biggest event. These were the As and high Bs, the working girls.

Shalom Harlow is my pick for BEST DRESSED in Marchesa. This is what the Met Ball is all about – she looks breathtaking in that gown.

I almost fell over when I saw Christina Ricci in Zac Posen. She never ages a day and looks super sexy in this sheer number.

I found Mary-Kate’s dress underwhelming, but Ashley Olsen looks ravishing in vintage Dior Haute Couture. The whole look is perfect.

Elle Fanning looks like a little couture doll in Valentino. She is so outshining her sister, it’s not even fair.

Rihanna has been looking haggard lately, so I was pleasantly surprised at how elegant she was in this striking Stella McCartney gown.

Iman, also in Stella McCartney, turned it out in a metallic gold jumpsuit. A little draggy, a lot amazing.

Karolina Kurkova in a spring 2011 Jean Paul Gaultier lace legging-dress creation. If the models can’t do it, who can?

I love this Prabal Gurung gown and funky jewelry on Ciara. White could be difficult to pull off at the ball, but she did it right.

Even though Crystal Renn is too skinny for my taste, she is an absolute vision in Alexander McQueen. I need my hair to look like this.

After getting ready in a Barneys window yesterday, Daphne Guiness showed up in McQueen. Perfect, amazing, stuns.

I loved Ginnifer Goodwin‘s look from the moment I saw it. Then I realized it was custom Topshop. Damn she makes it look good.

Naomi Campbell looks like the queen she is in custom McQueen. She wears the sedatives well too.

Hamish Bowles looks like a true gentleman in custom McQueen. Love it from head to toe.

I always wait with baited breath to see what Blake Lively is wearing. She obviously did not disappoint in a Chanel toga.

New York’s best couple showed up looking better than ever. Beyonce is working that Emilio Pucci gown like whoa.

Queen Bitch Anna Wintour gave her best smile to the camera and looks like a shiny grandiose statue in Chanel.

On to the Most Boring of the night. On any other occasion, these folks would have looked great (probably). Unfortunately, this also means they’re the Cs of the Met Ball.

I’m sleeping. Zoe Saldana is usually among the best dressed. Why did she choose this boring Calvin Klein for the biggest fashion night of the year?

Leighton Meester is amazing, but she has trouble getting it right. Different shoes and hair would have done this Louis Vuitton dress more justice.

I love this Michael Kors dress on Emma Roberts, but she has the body to wear something more over the top on a night like this.

Madonna, the Material Girl herself, definitely could have done better than this Stella McCartney dress. Pretty, but boring.

I’m actually quite obsessed with this Miu Miu dress Michelle Williams is wearing. But I would wear this to a nice dinner, not a gala.

And now ladies and gentleman, the Worst Dressed of the night. These are the Ds and Fs of the Met Ball, the creme de la creme of mistakes.

ARGH! Christina Hendricks used to dress so well! This Carolina Herrera gown is an unflattering fit and color on her.

Oh dear. Hate to say it Alicia Keys, but it looks like you’re wearing a giant turd instead of Givenchy. Brown jacket AND dress is NOT fly.

Jennifer Lopez looks like a halfway plucked bloody chicken. Matchy-matchy lipstick, bag and Gucci is a no go.

I thought Chloe Sevigny would make McQueen look good, but I was wrong. The hair is awful and the dress fits like she grabbed it off some rack.

Sorry to say it Kate Hudson, but this Stella McCartney is not a cute pregnant lady dress. And whatever is on your head isn’t working either.

Nooooo! In the rush of preparing for the gala, Lucy Liu forgot to get a wax! Oh wait, that’s just her looking blech in Vionnet.

Accounting-firm-in-waiting, Goldstein and Goldberg, called for camp so Crystal picked up the phone, took a detailed message and showed up ready to werq. The result is a fun, vibrant story to which any drag queen would give her proverbial snaps.

- In the wake of the disaster in Japan (you know, the whole country ceasing to exist and everything) Uniqlo‘s parent company Fast Retailing will donate 1.4 billion yen ($300 million…it sounds more impressive in yen) to organizations aiding the crisis and 700 million yen in clothing. It’s nice when fashion reveals a heart beneath all the loathing. [Racked]

- Tyra Banks on wowing the Ivy League: “…it’s like, well, oh my God, why is a model going to Harvard? Increasingly, plus-size models are making it BIG. Larger ladies are snatching elite magazine spreads, being crowned queens at beauty competitions and bumping more and more skinnier girls out of the spotlight. Here are the 7 most sizable names in plus-size modeling.

1. Crystal Renn

Crystal Renn is leading the charge for plus-sized models. Renn, a size 8, posed for five major ad campaigns and seven French Vogue spreads last year alone.

2. Whitney Thompson

You may remember Whitney from America’s Next Top Model season 10 – she won the entire competition. Whitney went on to pose for Forever 21, Saks Fifth Avenue, People Magazine, Seventeen Magazine and a host of other fashion ads and editorials.

3. Marquita Pring

Marquita is a Ford girl who wears size 41-35-46. She’s been featured in Vogue, Vice, Tush, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle.

4. Kate Dillon

Ms. Dillon’s schoolmates dubbed her “Overweight Kate,” and the teasing took its toll. Kate became severely underweight though she won third place in Elite’s Look of the Year contest, earning the then-17-year-old a $75,000 contract. Kate’s malnourished and two-cigarette-pack-a-day lifestyle eventually made her fed up with modeling. She quit the business and moved back into her parent’s house. At the suggestion of a friend, Kate returned to modeling after a short break – this time as a plus-size model. She’s enjoyed modeling more ever since.

5. Gitte Lill

In addition to plus-size modeling, Gitte is also a dancer. The Norway-born beauty is backed by the Ford agency.

6. Natalie Laughlin

W magazine has hailed her as one of “the brightest stars,” and The Wall Street Journal writes that “people in the industry say the brown-eyed, 5-foot-9 model, size 12-to-14, is at the top of her game.” I can’t disagree. Natalie was featured as Liz Claiborne’s “Elizabeth” girl, and she’s earned the title of “Cindy Crawford of plus-size models” by some industry folks.

Alyona didn’t start out as a plus-size, but she was moved into the category. She’s earned a long list of career achievements, including walking for Marc Jacobs, Prada, Chanel and Givenchy. As the daughter of Pearl Lowe and Gavin Rossdale, Daisy Lowe is no stranger to life in the spotlight. After being selected by Karl Lagerfeld to walk for Chanel and appearing in campaigns for Agent Provocateur, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger, Lowe reveals to ASOS Magazine a softer side to her rock’n’roll upbringing and how modeling has molded her into the person she is today.

Photographed by Guy Aroch and styled by Karen Clarkson, Lowe looks wide-eyed and lovely on the March 2011 cover. Below are some highlights from her ASOS interview:

On growing up as the daughter of Pearl Lowe: “I was a kid, so my childhood wasn’t mental to me. You don’t question it, that was just what my life was like. But maybe it means that with the craziness [of modeling], I can always find the calm in the storm.”

On her desire to see curvier models in print: My dream is to see a lot more female shapes in ad campaigns when I look through magazines…my friend was working with Crystal Renn and said she thinks she’s only got a 38-inch hip. Karl Lagerfeld said he was going to embrace her womanly shape and then he just put her face on the ad campaign. Girls are starting to have tits in pictures, but I think it still needs to be about the curve… Real women have hips and an arse, yet loads of models in shows seem to have neither.”

On her style: “Most of my wardrobe is taken up by white floaty or long floral dresses. I like to dress like a fairy and a doll quite a lot, but I do like wearing black too. I don’t think I have a particular style, I think I go for a lot of different things.”

Crystal Renn went into this Harper’s Bazaar photoshoot ready to work. She also went in a plus size model and left…I don’t know what would one even call this? Well, how about this: gorgeous.

I swear the 90s are back. Every editorial I see looks like a 90s spread. Or maybe I’m just obsessed with 90s fashion. Either way, photographer Paola Kudacki captures an effervescent Renn in clean and simple lines brought together by stylist, Natasha Royt.

And, sure Crystal doesn’t look like a house,but she’s also not a bag of jangling Eastern European bones. The truth is, there’s always some debate around her weight; if she’s a plus-sized model; if she has an eating disorder again; if Karl Lagerfeld is spoon feeding her Mexican diet pills.

Fashion has always been body conscious, and it’s ironic now that people are upset that a plus sized model isn’t plus-sized enough. You just can’t win. You’re either too fat or not fat enough. This is exactly why I prefer to err on the side of tradition and have Karl Lagerfeld spoon feed me Mexican diet pills.

Crystal Renn Is Not Afraid to Exercise Anymore

Model Crystal Renn was afraid of exercising after taking it too far when battling anorexia. But she’s back in the saddle and looking great.

Renn told NY Magazine:

In the past, I avoided exercise because it brought back terrible feelings. I wasn’t ready. And I was scared that maybe I was going to be addicted again. That’s a fear that goes through your mind, whenever you’re getting over an addiction or a disease like anorexia, yeah, I absolutely was worried. But then I guess you could say my life changed in a really drastic way. For one, there was a split-up that I went through that was very difficult, and I thought, “You know what? I need to be in a good place. I need to find me again.” So I went with my grandmother to Patagonia. One of the things on my list was to go to this place, after seeing it in a Vogue issue with Caroline Trentini. I said, “I’m going to go there.” And I went backpacking for three weeks and I came back and I had lost some weight. And basically I’ve been traveling ever since. This is just how my body is now. It’s great. I have to be honest, when I was a size 12, I was just like, “This is how it is. Just accept it, like, love it. And I did.” And then to have it change all over again, it’s kind of been an adjustment for me. It’s been strange, actually, because it’s not something I’ve been trying to do.

I absolutely love this spread. It’s so hot and controversial, especially because Renn is a “plus size” model. Is it weird that the blood of the meat dripping down her arm is making me hungry? This is exactly why French Vogue is awesome and American Vogue sucks.

As a teen she was anorexic, and as she reached her twenties, she began to embrace the natural curves of her body. She eventually became the most popular plus-size model in fashion history.

However, her new runway shows for Chanel and her Jean Paul Gaultier ads show a skinnier side of Crystal. Can she still be considered a plus-size model?

Nearly two months after her triumphant stomp down Chanel’s Resort 2011 runway sparked People to speculate she was losing weight, this Fashion for Passion photo shows up to fan the flames. Renn looked curvaceous and stunning per usual at Chanel, however here, she does appear to have shrunk a few sizes. Should someone ring the cause for alarm? Or is it, as her agent at Ford suggested, “because she’s been so active recently”? Fashion is beginning to embrace the plus-sized model – i.e. the average woman — and Crystal Renn has become the face of that movement. Although her weight shouldn’t be an issue, it has to be. Well, at least the scales are tipped in her favor. Now get this girl to a KFC, stat!

Italian Vogue Launches Vogue Black and Vogue Curvy

Italian Vogue just relaunched its website with some help from a small team in New York. And everything is available in English! (Except the text linking to jumps in blog posts, which reads “continua” but adds fun foreign flavor.) The sections within the site are interesting: Vogue Black, Vogue Curvy, and Vogue Talents. Because these things must be examined on their own, apparently.

Vogue Black appears to be devoted to black talent in fashion. Today’s top story is a video interview with Tyra Banks — in English. Tyra appeared in Italian Vogue’s all-black issue. On Vogue Black she talks about how her run as a talk-show host is coming to an end, and reminisces about some of her most brilliant journalistic moments. Such as the time Hillary Clinton stopped by.

“I asked Hillary Clinton how she feels about herself when she looks in the mirror, like, when her clothes are off and when she looks in the mirror. And everyone’s saying, ‘Oh my god I can’t believe you asked her that. oh my God.’ But I felt so comfortable with her, I felt like she was just a girlfriend at home, so I asked her those questions. I didn’t know I was pushing the envelope by asking her things like that.”

Moving on: Vogue Curvy is devoted to … women with figures. That section leads with a video interview with Crystal Renn, who talks about how amazing life became when she decided to stop starving herself and eat salad with salmon and walnuts on it. (Since when is salmon a skinny person no-no? Modeling must be rough.)

Lastly, Vogue Talents seems to be all about up-and-coming fashion talents. However, it currently leads with a story on Rodarte, a label that is hardly up-and-coming at this point.

We were reasonably amused perusing Italian Vogue’s new Internet collective, but why must curvy women, women of color, and burgeoning design talent be viewed in separate channels? Is it not possible to have a fashion magazine that embraces women of all sizes and colors who wear young and established labels? Italian Vogue seems to think not.

One of these things is not like the other. V Magazine is out to prove that no matter what your size is, you can make it work.

Here are the advance photos by Terry Richardson from V Magazine (issue #63): “The Size Issue,” featuring top plus-size model and author of “Hungry” Crystal Renn alongside newcomer—and more traditional model body-type—Jacquelyn Jablonski. V63 does not hit newsstands until January 14, 2010.

Appropriately titled “One Size Fits All,” Richardson’s photo spread showcases Renn and Jablonski side-by-side in identical looks, matching sample size outfits and similar poses. Still, the effect is a powerful one that proves fashion can flatter any figure. Most recently Renn—who has walked the runway for Jean-Paul Gaultier and graced the cover of American Vogue—famously penned her own weight and body image struggles within the model industry in a memoir entitled “Hungry: A Young Model’s Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves,” which was released this fall.
