Shades of Lilac

Lilac has been seen popping up in many designers ready-to-wear lines for spring 2010. Designers like Isaac Mizrahi, Zac Posen, Cynthia Rowley, and Marchesa have all incorporated various shades of this purple color into their latest collections. We saw this hue start to emerge last spring, even appearing in the form of lipstick, but I definitely think you’re going to be seeing a whole lot more of it next year.
Sorry to those of you who dislike any and all things purple, but it seems as if it’s here to stay a little longer.

BEHIND THE BEAUTY: Runway Hair
TRESemmé signed on as the official haircare sponsor of this year’s spring shows for NYC Fashion Week granting the
brand with backstage access at one of the industry’s biggest events. TRESemmé Celebrity Stylist Nathaniel Hawkins, who led the hair teams for Tracy Reese and Cynthia Rowley, dishes his secrets for getting the look.
“This season, we saw a return to simple, yet beautiful hair. Whether the look of the show was
soft and feminine or exhibited more of an edge, the common thread remained the hair looks -
face flattering and pretty. And the best thing about these styles is that they are easy to achieve
with the right products and tools,” says Hawkins.
Here are the trends, right off the runways, courtesy of TRESemmé:

Wave of Independence
“Gone are the days of binding curls and waves. This season, it is all about laid back, yet feminine glamour,” adds Hawkins. Rachel Roy, L’Wren Scott, Rebecca Taylor, Diane von Furstenberg and Anna Sui all sent this look down their runways. To get these hot waves:
1. Scrunch TRESemmé Flawless Curls Curl Hydration Lotion Crème into damp hair.
2. Blow dry the hair with a diffuser using the fingers or let it dry naturally.
3. Part hair evenly down the middle and finger comb each side into a ponytail.
4. Taking each ponytail, twist the lengths of the hair until it starts to twist onto itself,
creating a bun on each side of the head; secure each bun with a hair pin.
5. Using the diffuser, dry each bun and let the hair sit for 20 minutes.
6. Remove the pins and finger comb hair, creating beautiful, tousled waves.
7. Run a dime-size amount of the TRESemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Styling Crème over the
lengths of the hair to tame flyaways and add shine.

Mixed Up
“A lot of shows this season featured a dual-finish hairstyle with either a mix of shiny and matte or rough and smooth,” notes Hawkins who created such a look for Cynthia Rowley’s show. Other designers who showcased the look included: Alexander Wang, Erin Fetherston, Thakoon and Richard Chai.
To copy the ponytail follow these simple steps:
1. Pull hair back into a ponytail using a boar bristle brush
2. Work TRESemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Styling Crème into the hair at the top of the ponytail
but not throughout the lengths of the hair.
3. Spray the mid-shafts and ends of the hair with TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat
Tamer Spray.
4. Blow dry hair against the natural direction of the cuticle to create a rough texture, which
will contrast the sleek, shiny top section of the head.
5. Finish this look with a touch of TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hair Spray
throughout the ponytail.
Hawkins and the TRESemmé Styling Team tied shiny black ribbon on all of the models at the Cynthia Rowley show to add a touch of glam.

Soft Around the Edges
“Stick straight locks had their moment on the runway, but the look right now is all about smooth hair with some bend and movement,” says Hawkins. This chic style was seen on the runways of some of fashion’s biggest names including BCBG, Doo.Ri and Donna Karen. Hawkins loved the way this styled complemented the straight lines at the Herve Leger show.
Getting the look is simple:
1. Apply TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray to hair, followed by a liberal application of TRESemmé Thermal Creations Volumizing Mousse from the roots of the hair to the ends.
2. Blow hair dry with a medium-sized round brush.
3. Spray Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray onto the hair again.
4. Take sections of hair twice the depth of the flatiron plate, pull the iron away from the head to create a slight curvature.
5. Add runway-worthy shine by lightly spraying the TRESemmé No Frizz Shine Spray.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Cynthia Rowley Fall 2009
Though many designers cower in fear over the negative impact the economic recession could have over their designs, Cynthia Rowley made the best of it for her Fall 2009 collection. Focusing on accessories that could be worn with an existing wardrobe, Rowley crafted jewel covered leggings, wishbone necklaces and slouched leather boots with a keen eye. The clothes themselves, exuding a careless artist vibe, were less than appealing. Speckled silk frocks and and silk dresses with floral patchwork were chaotically busy, looking more like ancient Goodwill sweaters than runway ready pieces. Whoever attacked Rowley with the paint brush has some serious explaining to do.

Show Stoppin’

As if the vibrant Christmas scene in Copenhagen, Denmark wasn’t enough, Henrik Vibskov and his astounding fashion shows are yet another reason why I want to hop a plane and make a transatlantic journey! Now, I’ll admit that most of Vibskov’s eccentric designs don’t appeal to my taste, but the way this man puts on a show is right up my alley! I stumbled upon these videos while lurking on Youtube, loving every second of the jazzy music, amazing runway setups and the sheer excitement both on the runway and in the audience. I couldn’t help but laugh at the minty green cilia or the boob-like objects creating obstacles for the models, but oh so coherent with Vibskov’s season designs. I was even thrilled to see Vibskov’s involvement in the shows (apparently he is an accomplished percussionist is playing drums in both shows!) At least this dude is proud of his work and doesn’t try to act all humble and shy (*cough* Cynthia Rowley…don’t think I didn’t see you poke your head out and then hide backstage!)

NY Fashion Week: Cynthia Rowley
Even under the pressure of the enormous clock ticking in the background, Cynthia Rowley sent out a cohesive and impressive Spring collection. With a subtle hint of an “under the sea motif”, Rowley dressed up her sleek silhouettes with vibrant geometric shapes, unique cut-outs and bold outlines. Rumor has it that Rowley’s handbags were even made of floatable material! Sheer layering was also a nice touch added to balance Rowley’s fearless collection. What a splash!
Thanks WWD!

Ride Off The Runway With Cynthia Rowley
If anyone saw the premier of Gossip Girls on Monday night, they might have caught a glimpse of Blair Waldorf’s bike. Well, that very familiar bike is actually straight off the runway of Cynthia Rowley.
The limited-edition, Cynthia Rowley beach cruiser is customized with a CR-designed floral print in light blue and yellow. The bikes, in mint, baby blue, ivory, camel, light pink, and navy, were ridden down the runway as the fashion show finale.

Cynthia Rowley Causes Cancer
While shopping for some goodies at Target for our new office (25 Water Street, down the block from Real World: Brooklyn. Yeah, we can’t control our cool.) we came across Whim by Cynthia Rowley, a pretty random offshoot home collection by the big name designer. While we have no problem when designers decide to go all Lauren on our asses, one aspect of the collection through us off. Amongst the cheap, plastic margarita glasses and cabana style serving trays was a Margarita Lite Mix with a giant WARNING label on it
Although it’s blurry above, it basically says “This product contains ——-, known in the state of California to cause cancer.”
Holy fuck Cynthia!!!
I think you just bought your one way ticket to hell. Last time I checked killing people with your products is not the way to hold onto customers.
And kudos to Target for putting this death juice on their shelves. Yeah, I know they also sell cigarettes, but this is just a bit too irresponsible.
You say hello, I’ll say goodbye.
