Welcome to our month of Fashion Education. To start you off in the right direction, let’s examine your choice of design university, or more importantly, the fashion schools of choice. Certain alma maters produce an exceptional level of talent, consistently. Let us see where you stand, and who stands out as your alumni and professors. (Note: we are only looking at schools that speak English. Paris has burned.)

Campus Tour: The smallest state also has a small design program that is focused on quality garment making from every angle. The program follows a garment through its entire lifecycle, from the creative design and tailoring, to a focus on sustainably producing goods on both small and large scale in a socially and environmentally minded manner. An entirely student run fashion magazine, UDress, and fashion shows exist outside of class, working to show and pull fashion out of this college driven town.

Programs: Apparel Design, Merchandising, Sustainability

Tuition: $27,000

Star Alumni: Well, me. And a fierce force that is the backbone of the garment industry.

SOURCE:A Chat with Fashionistette

One of the great things about blogging is the fact that you meet a lot of great people. I met Pamela at one of the fashion blogging events and I instantly fell in love with the clothing brands she is caring at her online store. I’ve wanted to interview her since then and we finally found some time to chat. Pamela was also so generous and offered extra special discounts for Moda Epidemic readers. Just go on her website and enter Chic30 on the check out page for EXTRA 30% off!

Pamela is the founder of Fashionistette, the Bay Area-based online clothing store that carries contemporary brands like Black Halo, Genetic Denim, Cynthia Vincent, Tracy Reese, Rory Beca and more.

To date, Fashionistette has had great success with its latest fashions, including: evening and casual dresses, jeans, tops, tunics and more.

“I decided to go online because it is so exciting to reach more people. With the growth of bloggers, social media and online fashion communities I was able to market my business online and reach a bigger audience”, says Pamela.

Also, more than almost anywhere else, the Bay Area consumers value contemporary, sophisticated and affordable clothing and that is what Fashionisttete is all about.

1. I know your background is in retail. What made you decide to start your own business and go online?

I’ve always wanted to start my own business. After working for traditional retailers for over 20 years in planning and buying I decided to go online to reach more people. I’ve always wanted to open my own online boutique that would carry unique, fashion forward brands easily accessible for everyone online. I wanted to respond to the customer demand for shopping online for one of the kind pieces. It is undeniable that online shopping has been increasing tremendously over the past couple years and it has been overshadowing traditional ways of shopping for clothing. With the growth of bloggers, social media and online fashion communities I was able to market my business online and reach a bigger audience.

2. How would you describe your client’s style?

The Fashionistette customer is 25-45, mostly educated professional. The merchandise I carry is contemporary, casual and chic. The Fashionistette client shops for brands like Rory Beca, Twelfth Street and Nation Ltd Tees.

4. How does your buying process look like?

I buy from established California designers mostly in Los Angeles. I bring in new merchandise each month and select the best pieces offered for each delivery carrying and assortment of tops, dresses and denim.

5. Is Fashionistette a reflection of your personal style?

Yes, the merchandise I carry is a reflection of my personal style. It’s fashionable, feminine and fun. The fabric and tailoring are high quality with unique details and fabrics.

6. If you had to wear one thing for the rest of your life what would that be?

Genetic Denim Dark Skinny Jeans, a stylish Nation Ltd Burnout Tee untucked and a pair of cool, stand out shoes like Cynthia Vincent Luella Wedges or my new sky high peep toe clogs. My new favorite pieces this season are from Generra, the Stone Trenchcoat and Charcoal Stripe Dolman Sleeve T-Shirt Dress.

7. Fashionistette carries only new merchandise, have you ever thought about adding some vintage pieces as well?

Yes, I would like to bring in vintage to pair with new merchandise to give my customers styling ideas.

8. Skinny jeans or Boyfriend jeans?

Skinny Jeans

A powerful planetary pairing of strength and passion will propel romantic prospects into the stratosphere this week (for most signs anyway)! As the summer passes it’s official halfway point, it’ll remain just as hot socially as it is atmospherically. Find out how much your temperature could increase here.

Aries
This week, you’ll harness the universe’s magnetic powers so strongly, that your dreamlover won’t be able to resist your seductive pull. This cosmically-assisted connection has potential to continue, if you can manage to emotionally float like a butterfly (instead of letting your insecurities cause you to sting like a bee). Celestial Style Tip: Matt & Nat’s Santogold shoulder bag is as rocker gritty/feminine as its namesake.

Taurus
Look out, Taurus – stars will align to inspire a weekend filled with sensual attractions and physical reactions! Although romance is ordained, if you want to maintain momentum you’re going to have to give generously without thoughts of what you expect to get in return. Celestial Style Tip: Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent’s Suede Grocery Bag is too chic to be filled with foodstuffs, but perfect for everything else.

Gemini
Two of the Zodiac’s best-matched planets will meet in your sign this weekend, which means you can expect lots of love! Whether your ring finger’s getting itchy, or you’ve looking for a no-strings cuddle buddy, it’ll be a great time to put yourself out there and reap the universe’s romantic rewards. Celestial Style Tip: Alexander Wang’s Rocco Mini Duffel is an edgy re-imagining of the duffel silhouette.

Cancer
Home will be where the heart is this week, Cancer! You’ll enjoy yourself most if you swap your dancing shoes for a pair of Isotoners, and spend your downtime curled up with your boo. If you’re single and crushing, invite the object of your affections over for dinner. Your home just may transform into a love nest. Celestial Style Tip: Passersby will swoon over Rebecca Minkoff’s Swoon Hobo.

So my quest for finding a pair of brown wedges finally ended yesterday. I had fallen in love with the brown wedges from the Cynthia Vincent for Target line, but unfortunately they were completely gone by the second day. I made a couple of calls to Target stores (okay…make that MANY calls for a couple of weeks) trying to see if they would get a new shipment, but no luck. I finally gave up, but still was on the hunt for finding a pair of brown wedges.

I had a $25 birthday gift card from Macy’s so decided to see what I could find there. Still no luck..until finally yesterday I stopped by Steve Madden and they were having a sale! I found these brown wedges…which were just what I was looking for. They were on sale for $39 (originally $90). They had a lot of cute shoes on sales…so def. be sure to check them out. What do you think?

Mike & Chris, following a disappointing attempt at a sample sale, was said to be going belly up. Their sales director claimed that this rumor was completely false and the company was merely “restructuring.” Well, it looks like reconstruction was exactly what my friends at Mike & Chris were doing! As of right now, Mike & Chris inked a deal with Green Mochi LLC, which also has partnerships with Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent and A.L.C. Basically, Mike & Chris will still be designing with Green Mochi doing all the dirty work with business and finance. Breathe easy, my friends, your favorite leather, blazers, dresses and sweatshirts are here to stay!
